It was nice and has a fantastic location as it located in the downtown where's the restaurants, cafes, Cathedral of st. vincent, and also super markets. I only stayed over night at the hotel. Some staff members are not very friendly. Be warned of taxi drivers trying to rip you off. It happened to me 2 out of 3 times! Shower is a bit funny. It doesn't have enough wall to stop the water from getting outside and making a mess!

There is free wi-fi on every floor, even the 5th where I stayed. It is located on Avenue Habib Bourghiba which is the main drag in Tunis and there are numerous cafes. It is close to the train stations and the Medina.

Everyone on the staff is very professionally and wonderfully friendly. The rooms were very clean, spacious, comfortable and quiet. The location is excellent for people wishing to be in the ville nouvelle amidst the numberous cafes of Avenue Habib Bourgiba, close to fine restaurants (e.g., La Mama, Chez Toi on Rue de Marseilles). I've inflated my ratings just a tad because I realized after I submitted my review for my previous stay, a week before, I had the 1s and 5s reversed in terms of which is a good and which is a bad score. This is a renovated hotel with clean, somewhat sparse but comfortable and adequate rooms, including the bathrooms. There's free wi-fi. The people who […] work there are very helpful. The breakfast buffet is on the meager side but adequate. The one thing that annoyed me, which I found at two other hotels in Tunisia, is that you have to plug the key into a slot when you come into the room in order for the electricity to go on. I understand that this saves energy, but it means that you can't count on your laptop or spare camera battery to recharge when you're out of the room! The location is fine, smack in the middle of Avenue Bourguiba, amid places for food, drink, and coffee, and an easy walk to the central Metro station, the TGM, the Porte de France, and the Medina. I can't tell you much about the English-speaking ability of the staff since I communicated in French, but I did hear one desk clerk speaking to a guest in English. Oh, and they cheerfully arranged for a staff member to drive me to the airport at half past midnight for my flight home, for a bit less than the cost of a cab and saving me from having to find and deal with a cab. I enjoyed my stays at the Hotel Carlton at both ends of my Tunisia vacation. The rooms were small but adequate, clean, and modern, with good bathrooms. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The desk clerk and then the in-house repair guy were cheerful after I boneheadedly forgot to take my US-based surge protector off my power strip before plugging […] into the prong converter and blew out the circuit breaker. They also arranged a 12:30 AM drive to the airport for my flight home, with one of the staff driving me for a fee a little cheaper than cab fare. Wi-fi access was decent and free. The breakfast buffet was so-so, more meager than what I came across in the resort hotels in the desert towns that I visited. The location is great, right on Avenue Bouguiba, close to food, cafes, the Porte de France, and the Medina, and walking distance to the central Metro station and the TGM. I spoke with everyone in French so I can't give you a great idea of how well English is understood there, but I heard one desk clerk speaking to one customer in English one day. One note: evidently, hotels.com's business is handled in Tunisia via Expedia, because the record at the hotel showed me as an Expedia reservation. Read more

I've been to 15 countries and stayed in many different hotels and this hotel is by far the worst. Customer service was atrocious and the staff just didn't seem to care about anything. The location was excellent because it was located within walking distance of the medina, loads of cafes, train station and tons of shopping. The main problem with the […] hotel was the hotel ITSELF. I rented two rooms, one for myself and a friend. When the air conditioner worked, my friend's was quite cool and mine was non-existent. It was literally cooler to open my window. The air conditioning is centrally controlled and 3 of the 7 days the AC did not work at all. The hotel lost power several times for no apparent reason. During the day there was loud banging but I could not see where or why. AC and all power turns off when you leave the room, so it was extremely hot on return. My sink basin was cracked in several places and the showers do not have doors so it was common to accidentally flood the bathroom floor without even trying. The bed was comfortable and while the TV worked fine. The complimentary breakfast was buffet style and was fine, but after the first 5 days it started to get monotonous. There was one downside to the location - the hotel is located next to a bar which was quite rowdy. I witnessed four fist fights that spilled out of the bar and onto the sidewalk in front of the hotel. I would NOT recommend this hotel under any condition. Spend a little more money for a better hotel. Read more

This is an historic hotel dating from the 1920's but refurbished recently with great finesse. Circulation space is generous as is the space of room and ensuite shower and lavatory. The decor and furnishing is up to the minute Scandinavian in style. Airconditioning was silent and efficient, walls were well insulated for sound transmission, windows double […] glazed. Wi Fi worked well for 6 of the 7 days then on the last day it became unavailable. Lifts were smooth and silent but on our last day one lift became erratic. Breakfast was OK, generous buffet with plenty of hard boiled eggs or an alternative such as scrambled eggs. Other meals are obtained in the Avenue from from the many cafes and restaurants in the vicinity. Reception and other staff were always courteous, willing and helpful. I complained about the ineffective air conditioning and was offered another room. Rooms have fridges and some (even side rooms) have balconies. Did not try the food, but the food area was clean and spacious. Large air conditioned lounge area on the first floor (with air conditionining) The hotel feels safe and secure and this is the first hotel in Tunis I have seen where the fire doors are treated as such, that is a good sign. Our stay at the Carlton was very nice. They have some new rooms and some old rooms, so try to ask for the new ones, as they've been recently renovated. This hotel was in easy walking distance to all the major sights around Tunis (which you should be able to see everything in 3 days). Wi-Fi was free, fast, and easy to get from our room (on the 1st floor). The […] breakfast was a little anemic but not bad: cereal, bread, cheese, salami, olives, etc. The overall condition of the hotel left some things to be desired but our room was very nice. It's not easy to find hotels in this class in Tunisia- either they're dumps (and cheap) or they're rather pricey 5-star tourist hotels. That middle rung is the missing link. We really enjoyed a week at this lovely old hotel where we were upgraded to a suite at no extra charge. Although the hotel is right on the busiest street in Tunis the double-glazing completely shuts out the noise. There were one or two small problems in the bathroom because it had just been newly renovated - loose shower head etc. - but nothing to worry […] much about. It was all immaculately clean with fresh linen every day.The staff are lovely and extremely helpful, speaking French and English. Good breakfast buffet. A very useful tip - when returning to the airport, the hotel arranges a taxi service for 15 dinars, which saves haggling and worry. The location is midway between the medina, with its huge old souq, and the Tunis Marine train station where you get a little train to the Carthage stations which would save a fortune in taxi fares to Carthage. We found Tunisia to be very peaceful and welcoming - no need to worry about political disturbances as the country is now very calm. Read more
