"Impossible to find more impossible to park"
Was a very nice old mansion and I stress OLD. It was quite hard to locate even with our updated new Garmin. Once found, we had a positively horrific time trying to park even our tint Ford Fiesta. Folks were parked up and down the steep hillside driveway which you can not turn either direction from in anything less than a very careful 3 point turn. I […] actually lost a portion of my fender skirting trying to get out of there. Once inside, we were met by the young owners, both whom were ill with colds. They seemed nice, but went away never to be seen again. We needed to depart before we had intended and I attempted to call to advise Dan, the owner at the provided phone #, but after 3 unsuccessful tries, we just left a note and departed. At our check-in his credit card machine was not working so I left our information and said to call if there was any further questions. No calls or emails yet, so I guess we are ok.. If you are infirm or hate to park or just have a camper or even SUV I think you may want to search for another lodging. If you are a history buff or lover of old architecture then this may be for you. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good place to stay without spending an arm and leg"
Every thing in Halifax was based in downtown. It had good places to eat. Must go on Peggy's Cove tour.Genuine Expedia guest review
A quirky but very nice experience. Excellent breakfasts tailored to special dietary needs if necessary. Difficult entry lane to the B&B, but in a convenient location for access to downtown landmarks.Genuine Expedia guest review
I have stayed here 3 times now and find it an excellent value compared to local traditional motels.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hosts and good breakfasts"
Hosts very enjoyable, helpful. Breakfasts very good. Rooms vary in size, bed was quite comfortable for my bad back. Location OK if you have a car, outside of city, easy access to highways. Driveway steep, and parking tight.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"misled and disappointed"
Mansion beautiful, clean, though downstair's common rooms were cluttered with mis-matched furniture and lots of stuff. Located on busy highway, with 4-story building obstructing view of bay. Driveway almost undriveable, as so narrow and steep; parking for only 2.5 cars. No surrounding land. Manager and boyfriend/partner and ex-boyfriend would party […] nightly under our bedroom window, on the only outside space (a kind of porch). Very, very unprofessional behavior. "Could be so much more"
Hosts were very nice, especially husband. Stayed in artist room and the room itself was fine, but the bathroom was unpleasant because of an overpowering smell of mould / mildew...nauseating. Also the shower drain did not drain fast enough so you're standing in your own filth...yuck. Loud, long nights with host' company sticking around to the wee hours. […] Driveway is a nightmare, but hubby will provide valet services. Can't comment on breakfast because I missed it both days. Young couple on their way to being good b+b hosts...but more work to be done. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Room was old but clean. There is no bathroom exhaust fan in the Merchant room. Car park is a little small and difficult to get in and out. The stair is a little tight to move luggage up or down. Hosts are very friendly.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Requires good driving skills to park vehicle up steep driveway. Building is old, charming and clean. Good wi-fiGenuine Expedia guest review
Our stay there was very good the owners were super friendly, good breakfast, comfortable king size bed, would definitely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Spent 7 nights at this B&B and was quite pleased with everything. The bed was comfortable the bathroom nice and modern and the breakfast tasty. It is quite far from downtown but there were several buses going there and the bus stop was just a 1 minute walk.Genuine Expedia guest review
My stay was very enjoyable and the hosts were great. A snow storm hit and we were all snowed in for an entire day. They were nice enough to make as supper since nobody could get out. The one issue with the location is the parking. There isn't much of it and to make matters worse we had a snow storm and I couldn't get up the steep driveway. Other than […] that issue the place is an A plus. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We were very disappointed at this B&B. The grounds were terrible, & unkept. The hosts were nice folks who have taken on too many jobs to run this B&B in a manor befitting a business. They were having a party in the parking lot and drinking until the late hours. On the morning of departure, they slept in and we missed breakfast after a 45 min wait along […] with several other guests. Phone calls did not wake them. The kitchen was a mess with empty bottles and generally unkept looking. We had to go as we were on a time schedule without breakfast. We have since made contact with them and they have made amends with a 30 dollar refund. As a Nova Scotian I was embarrassed to chat with the fellow guests ( British) as they were wondering what they had got themselves into. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"very close to Mt. St. Vincent U"
This is a very nice B and B located within walking distance of Mt. St. Vincent U. Beautiful, historic inn with lots of character. Although we had a private bath, it was located next door to our room so we had to go into a common hallway to access it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very comfortable, awesome breakfast and our hosts were so nice, very helpful and accommodating....will go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Bad Bed & Breakfast"
01/21/15 Jim N New York
Me and my wife stayed here for a couple of nights in mid January and the experience was awful. The owner, Danny, made us wait 30 minutes as he forgot that we were checking in and was out. Danny then proceeded to take a keen interest in my wife, although he has a lovely wife himself who also runs the B&B. While alone in the common area lounge, Danny approached my wife asking for her cell number and if she would go out for dinner with him, my wife rejected his advances and Danny became annoyed and left. Once my wife informed me of this we decided to leave first thing in the morning. However we did not get much sleep that night as in the middle of the night Danny returned with a number of friends and processed to play loud music and smoke what I believed to be weed in the house. We did not stay for breakfast the next morning and left for another bed & breakfast. We find such behavior to be unacceptable and would not recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone.

I was very excited to be going to this B&B after seeing some of the reviews and the photos on the website. I found them to be very friendly both on the phone, during booking; and, also after upon check-in; however, there were some surprises I certainly didn't anticipate. First of all, I had already checked in and paid before I was told that there was no heat in the building, that the furnace was broken and the repair man was yet to come. They did put a portable heater in my room; however, I should have been told when I called that day that they had no heat; and, I would have chosen another location. Why would I leave a perfectly warm home to go to a house with no heat...I was going to treat myself to a couple nights away after just losing my husband in April. Thought it might be nice; and, they were award of that as well. When I got there, the house was not in order by any means because of a birthday party they were having for thier son, which I was alerted of before I came, so, I didn't pay much attention to that at the time. I was going out for the evening, so, I expected that when I returned, things would be in order, cleaned up and ready to go for the morning. Not to be the case; however, thought I would give it until morning, although the smell when I came into the house seemed even stronger than when I arrived. Feeling quite disappointed in my choices of B&B's, I crawled into bed and the noise below me was very loud. It seemed that there was partying going on. I tried to block it out and allow those below me to have a nice evening, not to stifle their plans; but, by 1am, I stomped on the floor hoping to alert those below it was time to stop the noise so others could sleep. Katherine had told me to come down and tell them if things were too loud; however, when you are already tucked into bed and in your pj's, you really don't feel, nor have to, go and tell them there is too much noise in the house. After all, we were all in the same house. Anyway, by morning was very disappointed and by then, extremely tired and getting up to a very cold room, decided it was time to get out of there. I wrote them a note and went downstairs, only to find that things still had not been cleaned up and it was even colder in the dining room than upstairs in my room; and, the smell again, stale and unpleasant. I did explain all of the details in my letter and asked them to please consider reimbursing me for 1 of the 2 nighs I had booked, which should have been done on the fact that there was no heat; however, I did check and they billed me the full $227.00 including taxes for the 2 nights stay. That is fine, I am not going to make a big fuss over the money, as I did check out early and without having a discussion with them; however, I will certainly not recommed anyone to stay at this location based on the experience I had. I will tell you, they are very sweet people and want to please you; but, you cannot run a B&B and let things slide even a little bit....it can cost you alot of business, which is unfortunate. My room was The Royal Suite; and, although it is beautiful, because it's in the new part of the house, it is very noisy and you can hear everything going on below you. Unfortunate; but, certainly would not recommend this if you are looking for a quiet retreat away. I have stayed in a lot of Inns and B&B's and have never had this experience before.
"Extremely enjoyable stay!"

I throughly enjoyed my 5 day stay! Danny treated me like an old friend instantly and was very accommodating during my entire time there. My room, the artists suite, was spacious, clean and comfortable and breakfast was very good. The free Wi-Fi was a welcome bonus, and particularly helpful during my business trip. The B&B is located close to all that downtown has to offer and Danny is very knowledgable about the area and always made graet recommendations for restaurants and things to do. If you are looking for a fun and inexpensive place to stay this is absolutely the place to go!
"Beautiful older home with friendly owners"

We stayed for two nights in this charming B&B at the beginning and end of our NS trip. Very close to Mount St Vincent University along the Bedford highway the B&B is not hard to find but the street it is on is very short and steep road and located just off the highway. It is also very close to the cemetery where the bodies of the Titanic victims were buried. Rooms are quaint and well appointed. Guests have access to coffee and tea and a small fridge in the dining room at all hours. Dan and Catherine are enthusiastic hosts. Breakfast is exceptional and beautifully presented. Good value for the money.
"Most helpful in a crisis"
10/22/14 Shelly P Grand Rapids, Michigan
Although other reviewers had problems with cancellations online, I found that Katherine and Danny were especially understanding about our "last minute" rescheduling due to significant flight delays. I called several times to inform and update them on the situation, and they allowed us to shift our reservation to different days. It was a much needed gift in the midst of crisis. (Recall Sept 26 FAA incident outside of Chicago, IL.) Our luggage was delayed even longer. The evening it arrived, K & D were about to go out, but agreed to stay home to receive the luggage. The couple is eager to please - maybe too eager at times. But that eagerness meant fantastic, made-to-order breakfasts of fruit-filled crepes, omelettes, french toast, yogurt parfaits and fresh juice. No buffet style meal here! It also meant sharing knowledge of the city and places of interest, tips about good restaurants and parking, etc. Overall, the stay was pleasant and located well enough for our time in Halifax.
"Beware of their cancellation policy..."
10/11/14 tanitha m Caribou, Maine
We had a change of plans shortly before traveling to NS. I booked this B&B on Booking.com around 330pm EST and then changed my mind w/in 15m at around 345pm EST. There was no mention of their cancellation policy on the Booking.com website, although it did say that the policy is different with each room. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn instead and I was shocked to see a charge of >$200 on my credit card from Ascendence. I called the hotel and spoke with a manager who told me he was "too busy" and would call me back in 45m. No phone call. I called the hotel back about 12pm EST and spoke with Katherine who was rude and told me that I was on the hook for the whole amt b/c I made the reservation in the "red zone" (ie w/in 24hours of the reservation). I asked for a refund and she wouldn't allow it. She told me she didn't rec'v the cancellation until the next day, which was a lie since Booking.com showed she was made aware around 930pm that same day. I called Booking.com and they discussed the issues with her and she agreed to a partial refund. Two weeks later, there was no credit to my acct so I called Booking.com back and after a conversation with her, they told me she'd already done it. I have called Booking.com about their website b/c their page isn't clear about the cancellation policy and you have to hover over a question mark icon to even see the cancellation policy. They state it's the problem of Ascendence b/c that's how they set up their page. I wasn't aware of the cancellation policy until I made and had canceled the reservation. Whatever...all I know is that everyone should be VERY aware that you'll not get a full refund of your money if you cancel your trip...even if it was w/in 15m of making the initial reservation.

The owners are very knowledgeable about the city and the historic events that went on through out the years, very friendly and courteous. They also provide great gluten free breakfasts, ask for the pancakes;)
"Nice, clean B&B with friendly hosts"

We stayed for one night in this B&B and had a great time. We had the Royal room and it was clean, comfortable and has a good bed. Katherine was really friendly and told us a lot about the history of Halifax and the "must-see" places. After visiting Canada for almost three weeks, and had a lot of bacon and eggs for breakfast, I was very pleased when Katherine and Danny served no continental breakfast but a yoghurt and french toast with a lot of fruit. Defenitely a good place to stay!

On September 12th, we stayed at this B&B. It was horrible from the start. Katherine came running out the house with no shoes and when I made a comment about driveway. Big mistake! She went off on me. She stated we should be glad to stay in such a historical place. Then she proceeded to have her 10 year old son check us in. Then her husband came in. He was nice to us. When we went to bed that night, we could hear the son talking for a long time which was hard to go to sleep. We had requested breakfast at 8 o'clock in the morning. However, when we came down they had nothing ready for us. The son came out and brought me coffee and we asked him to tell his father we needed a receipt for our cash payment. Danny came in and said he will give us a receipt. Then Katherine came in and told Danny that needed to get breakfast for their "other" guests. Where was "our" breakfast. She was very rude to us. We finally got our receipt and got out of there as fast as we could. Would not recommend this place to anybody.

I must admit that when we first arrived at the Ascendence I was not amused to find out it was located off a steep laneway with very tight parking at the end of it. However once we got situated in the too small parking area we were relieved once Danny answered the door and greeted us with a cheerful smile. This is a large old home and Danny and Katherine have put a lot of time and effort into transforming it into the comfortable Bed & Breakfast Inn that it is now. There are still some rough edges that need attention but these are being addressed. Danny gave us a upgraded room from a single queen with somewhat shared bath to a large king with a nice big bath and spa tub. We were very comfortable. We want to go downtown Halifax and Danny got out the mapping information and give us clear directions to do just that. We came back later in the evening and we were offered refreshments which we declined and retired to our room. In the morning we came down to the dining room for breakfast and we were pleased to be able to share the table with five other guests from Edmonton, Alberta, New Jersey and Nova Scotia. Our breakfast was prepared by both Danny and Katherine and it was great. Along with our table conversation we had a wonderful breakfast and a wonderful stay in a place we would not hesitate to return to. If Danny and Katherine could arrange to have their recreation vehicle removed and stored in another location this would really free us some valuable parking space for guests.
