""Short stay in Tromso""
An affordable hotel with a great breakfast. Simple rooms with maybe a little annoying sliding door to the toilet. 20 minute walk to the center, but close to Coop.I had chosen the hotel in order to see the Northern Lights. You just walk about 50 yards from the hotel to the nearby beach for a good spot, or 15 minutes to Telegrafbukta beach for a darker vantage point. Teas and coffees are available at all times and until midnight you can use the microwave and toaster. The many different receptionists were always pleasant and helpful.

"Einfaches Hotel Nordlichttouristen"

Oppholdet gikk greit, hyggelig betjening. Rommet dårlig utstyrt med nødvendig utstyr. Ingen hårføner, strykjern/brett, kun en rull toalettpappir, simpel såpe/shampo, ingen hårbalsam, mangler penn/skrivesaker, Tv minner om klenodium.

Helt greit.

"Quiet with spectacular views"
08/05/15 15426 Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The hotel is a couple of kilometres out of town, but it wouldn't take too long to walk and there's free parking available if you have a car. The twin room was pretty big, with armchairs, a coffee table, and a fridge. There's free WiFi as well. The highlight is the setting - the hotel backs onto a path which runs along the shore, and the views of the mountains are spectacular. Lots of gulls and oyster catchers around as well. Breakfast was ok, with cereal, bread and cheese/meats available.

"Out of town but nice beach"
08/03/15 dh2119 Glasgow, United Kingdom
This is the only place we saw in Tromso where you need a car or bus to get there. There is no dinner facilities there but a supermarket about 5-10 minutes walk away. The hotel has decent rooms (nothing special) with a fridge and mini kitchen (hobs only). Around the hotel is a big beach that is nice to walk on. The grounds are extensive. Breakfast was good, and deserted, we could have had 20 boiled eggs each.

"Expensive for just B&B"
04/01/15 TWMC2010 Bewdley, United Kingdom
I have used Sydspissen several times over the last few years in both summer and winter and always found it to be a great place to stay and relax but since my last stay there have been some changes that will make me reconsider returning. Firstly the dining area used to be open all day to hotel guests giving extra room to spread out if you had work to do or room for groups to get together, you also had free use of the coffee machine all day. Guests are now locked out of this room once breakfast is over and if you want a coffee you have to pay NOK 15; the price is not too high but the results are inconsistent. One member of staff may open the dining area for you so that you can make yourself something from the fancy coffee machine whilst another will just go out back and bring you a small cup of instant with no milk or sugar. The guest lock out of the dining room also extends into the evenings; once guests could get an evening meal in the restaurant but it now seems these are only provided to corporate groups using the hotel for conferences. So the hotel has basically become a big bed and breakfast with less personal service than you would get from a small B&B and costing more money.

A great place to spend some days near the sea and always with a splendid location to watch the northern lights, and nice walks along the shore, good breakfast service and helpful staff good balance between price/quality. The low point is the noise that can happen on weekends but in the end doesnt bother that much.

Big rooms and silent area by the sea. Dosn't cost so much. Ok breakfast and lunshes. Nice to have room whit view too the sea and fall asleap to the sound of the weaws. Not far to walk to the citysenter. Dose not serv dinner, but that's not a problem - just remember to eat somewere else.

"Excellent Budget Hotel"
03/15/15 Brian C Dublin, Ireland
We were very pleased with this hotel, an excellent budget option. It's located right by the sea facing away from the lights of the city. We had excellent views of the Aurora from outside the hotel, along by the shore. We hired a car. The airport is just 8km away, and the hotel is an ideal base for exploring the area. Parking is free, but do be careful if you are staying in February like we did - the grounds can be slippery, even though they are well gritted. The footpaths into town were dangerous during our stay. Your only option without a car is to use the bus. We stayed six nights and loved it. The sky was clear on arrival, but the Aurora were weak. We had to wait until our final night (night 6) to see the Aurora again and this time they were simply excellent, even though we had strong moonlight to contend with. We did three big tours during our stay: We visited the island of Sommaroy, via Ersfjordbotn. We had sunshine and the views very simply stunning. We also did the trip to Breivikeidet, across the fjord to Svensby. The views of the Lyngenalpen were incredible in sunshine. We returned to Tromso via Nordkjosbotn. The fjords were frozen in places, which added to the spectacle. We also visited Meistervik on the Malangen Fjord. Once again the scenery was stunning. Sydspissen Hotel was an excellent base. It was clean and the staff very helpful and friendly.

"I've been here twice and love it!"
12/04/14 ntibbe Sarasota, Florida
I like that it is out of town because it makes photographing the aurora borealis easier because they aren't polluted with city lights. The hotel is owned my the military so I know my money is going to a good cause. They were on leave the last time I was there so it got a bit noisy but the hotel staff told them to quite down or go outside lol. The food is good and the rooms are comfy. You can share rooms and do the hostel kinda thing but I always book my own room and restroom. View is great and it's right on a walking path. I walked down onto the beach area to take photos away from the hotel lights. It's probably a 10 minute drive from down town and you can take the bus (#34 every half hour Monday-Saturday.). Do note that there is no bus service, anywhere, on Sundays. Most shops are closed too. Norway makes an effort to give it's citizens time off which is an excellent thing in my opinion. Take Sundays and go hiking. I think the cable car is open Sundays but don't hold me to that. You can hike that mountain which extends past the point the cable car stops at. I believe some of the museums are open Sundays too. If nothing else stay up all night, Saturday, watching the northern lights and sleep all day Sunday lol. Northern Light tours run on Sundays and most the time you don't get back until 3am. I strongly suggest this hotel to people that want to be out of the city. Most tours pickup at the Radisson Blu so I'd stay there if you want to be in the city. Oh wifi is free at the Sydspissen Hotel.

This hotel is out of town but easily accessible by Bus (34). It doesn't do evening food but has good continental breakfast. It's selling point is its location on the fjord. We had beautiful walks, beautiful views of Snowy Mountains, a fabulous fjord and top it all we had the Northern Lights. Staff were very helpful throughout our stay.

"A quiet corner"
10/02/14 Michelle N Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Booked Sydspissen Hotel for its quiet location, a bit of distance from town. But local bus is easy enough, just have to pay attention to their frequency. The back of the hotel has stunning scenery. We were so so lucky that it suddenly snowed the night we were there, it was supposed to snow one month later. And the green mountain suddenly covered with snow. It was so breathtakingly beautiful. You can try your luck staying at the cafeteria to wait for the northern light, as it's facing the sea with minimum light pollution. But the cafeteria close at 11pm. you can still stay outside of the cafeteria (there're a few tables and chairs) and just have to go around to re-enter the hotel from the front. Only that it gets really cold staying out there with no hot drinks... Breakfast is simple. Coffee and tea is free flow till 11pm. There's a COOP supermarket just 5 min walk away. Hotel staffs could use some smiles but they are helpful and nice enough. I think Norwegians don't really like to smile but they always help when you needed it.

"Quiet and Great Breakfast!"
08/07/14 NewHampsterite Andover, New Hampshire
Sydspissen is outside of the main part of Tromso, but easily accessed by the local bus line (bus route 34, I believe) if you don't have a rental car. Being near the end of the island where Tromso is located keeps this hotel quiet and restful, and also has beautiful views of the water and mountains! Breakfast is classic Norwegian (yogurt, soft-boiled or hard-boiled eggs, and lots of open-faced sandwich fixings, as well as some cererals). Their whole-grain carrot bread is just divine - The staff at the desk are very friendly and helpful for suggestions and advice. Our room was large, and while it's not a fancy upscale hotel, it is very comfortable, and is more affordable than many other options. Consider these two driving tours to get an excellent overview of the region around Tromso - the spectacular Lyngen Alps as well as the fjords: http://www.visitnorway.com/us/where-to-go-us/northern-norway/tromso/what-to-do/tour-suggestions-in-tromso/ It's worth renting a car to do these trips!
