"Chosen for a chance to see the Northern Lights and it delivered!"
03/28/16 woozie3 Western Australia, Australia
After taking the Flybussen, we took the bus to Sydspissen from the stop near Radisson Blu. Then from the bus stop, it took at least 5 min to drag our luggage over the snow-covered road to the hotel, which was a little difficult. Once there, we had few complaints. Staff was always friendly. The triple room was clean, with comfy warm beds. Shower heat and pressure was good. Our TV didn't work, but staff was helpful and did offer a room change, which we declined as we didn't want to lose our view. Buffet breakfast was included for us and it was great- eggs, juices, coffee, cereal, meats, breads, fruits. Their dinner buffet was NOK215, which wasn't cheap, but nice enough. Coffee was NOK15. The bus timetable on their billboard didn't match the one at the bus stop, which caused us to miss the bus once, so do double check. A bonus was seeing a good Northern Lights display at the back of the hotel one night. This was the main reason we chose Sydspissen, although we did see the Lights on a tour the night before as well. The hotel is great, but we were surprised how expensive the bus fares ended up being during our 4 nights stay. Without the app, the bus ticket was NOK40-NOK50 one way, for a short 10-15min ride into the town centre. Times it by 2 for the return trip, and by 3 for the 3 of us per day, we could've stayed at a nice convenient hotel in the centre and walked everywhere. But, as said before, we chose it for the chance to see the Lights. Also, with the app, it was NOK33 one way per person, and although u do need an internet connection for the app to work, we found that at the bus stop we used, we could connect to free WiFi from the nearby buildings.

"A stay for 3 nights"

We wanted to see the northern lights and found this hotel. It was cheaper than we found anywhere else in the city so we booked. We were around 17.00 in the hotel and the lady of the reception helped us immediately. In around 5 - 10 minutes we had our key. Our room was good. A little dated, but good enough and clean. Three single beds with really great matrasses. Our view was awesome. We saw the sea and the other island full of lights. We even saw a little bit of the northern lights from out of the window. The bathroom is okay and the shower is good aswell. The breakfast is also okay. My sister is allergic to gluten and they helped her finding the right thing to eat. I will recommend to bring your own glutenfree bread because they don't have that. I recommend this hotel. By taxy you will be in the city around 7 minutes and costs around 180 NOK. It depends on the taxi itself. It's around 20 euros. We don't find this a bad thing. We have better view than people in hotels in the center of Tromso. The money is worth it.

"Great value for money!"

The woman at check in was very friendly. Probably the most talkative person I've encountered in Norway! Rooms have a weird layout for travelling couples but after moving the separate beds it was fine. It's not luxurious but has everything you need for a short stay. It can get a bit noisy during the nights. Breakfast has extensive! Made me sad the coffee machine just has plain coffee and I needed to add cold milk.

"Stay here for northern light!"
01/22/16 salparadise2015 Singapore, Singapore
The room was spacious enough. However, towels and bed sheet might not be clean enough(I am comparing with previous hotels we stayed in Norway) Breakfast was nothing to be mentioned. You get what you paid. However, since this hotel is a bit far from city center, the location does provide a great view for the light! We can even notice the light show inside our room! The beach was great as well during day time.

"Great value for money"

We spent 2 nights in the Sydspissen hotel which is just outside the centre of Tromso. We hired a car from the airport so it wasn't an issue. There are regular buses into the town or it's a few mile walk. The rooms are basic but very clean and are serviced daily. The breakfast was included and had a good selection of continental-style foods. There were several types of bread, which were delicious, as well as meats and cheeses. There were eggs, cereals, yogurt and other items. The area is beautiful, with lovely walks along the banks of the water. The scenery is breathtaking with snow covered mountains opposite and the huge sky. The hotel is a great place to see the northern lights, if you are lucky enough to see them! We went on a tour to see them and although they were weak, they were still beautiful. If they are strong, there is a huge uninterrupted sky to see from the hotel. Please note that there is no kettle or drinks making facilities in the room but there is a fridge; neither is there a hairdryer. These things are basic requirements in the UK so it was strange not to have them. The reception is manned 24/7 so you can get drinks, hot and cold from them.

"Nice hotel, just don't book when the military are staying!! (Military-owned property)"
11/20/15 Jodie T London, United Kingdom
The hotel is really nice, in a beautiful location, and has great facilities for a good price, which is why I wish I could give it full stars. Unfortunatly, we hardly got any sleep the first couple of nights we stayed here as a bunch of young military people were staying for the weekend, and no matter how good a hotel is, if you are unable to sleep then it has failed in its top priority. This is a military owned hotel, which it does not advertise anywhere, we only found this out when we arrived. We arrived at approximately 10:45pm and the lady at reception was quick to tell us they were being noisy, there was nothing she could do as they were fully booked and that they would be leaving in 30mins or so. We were fine with this as it would take us that time to get sorted anyway. She wasn't lying, they did leave some time after 11pm, but they also returned in varying numbers throughout the early hours of the morning, making lots of noise, slamming doors and trying to enter our room. Boys will be boys we said, and we got up very early the next morning to go to our whale watching trip, rather tired after our flight and journey and then not being able to sleep much. We returned a little earlier that evening exhausted after our boat trip, to prepare for going out for dinner, and there was very loud music being played from 6pm, which was still going at 8pm and all the way up to 11:30pm when they left again to go out for the night. I complained to the lady at about 10pm, who was apologetic but also seemed fatigued herself by the situation and that was when she first told me the hotel was military owned and there was actually nothing she could do about it and that she asked them to stop the music but they just turn it down and then turn it up loud again when she leaves. That whole evening they kept trying to enter our room and knocking on our door before realising we weren't part of their party. They seemed bemused that we would be in a room surrounded by their group and didn't expect us to be there. Really, we shouldn't have been there. If the military group was as large as it was and causing that much disruption, they should have had an entire floor dedicated to them, or the hotel should have called us or informed us of the situation before we arrived. I would have understood that it is military owned if they told me and therefore they can't do anything about it, and I also understand that if a bunch of military are on leave, they are going to be letting off steam and partying, but we should not have been put in that situation as paying customers. It put a massive downer on our trip. So that next night we also hardly slept, as again they left at about 11:30pm and finally the music stopped, but they came back in waves from around 2am to 5am, shouting, singing, running up and down the hallway, slamming doors and trying to enter our room again. I feel like we were incredibly tolerant, and i'm sure many people who had this experience would probably rate this hotel a lot less. However the staff were as helpful as they could be in such a bad situation. They also have free WiFi which is really fast. The continental style breakfast buffet was always good with a nice selection of food as well as coffee, tea and fruit juice. The room was ideal for what we needed, and had lovely sea view. I think if we had of come on days that the military were not there, then this hotel would have been incredible value for money. I deliberately picked a hotel that was slightly out of town for the quiet, as this hotel is approximately a 30 minute walk from the main part of Tromso. In reality, we would have got more quiet and more rest if we had of stayed in a centrally located hotel. If I had of been told that this was a military owned hotel and that they would be on leave and staying there during our trip then I would NOT have booked to stay here. The hotel needs to review its policy of putting that extra profit above its guests experience, as they obviously still wanted to fill their rooms with paying customers despite the military being booked in. They should never be placing paying customers in rooms next to or even on the same floor as the military when they are there, as the military are getting priority above you. If they can't seperate us, then customers should be phoned or emailed and advised prior to arriving what the situation is and be given the option to go elsewhere rather than being stuck in an awful situation and getting no sleep and it putting a massive downer on an activity-driven visit where you desperately need your sleep. Overall the hotel is good, but I would check before you go if a military group are booked in at the same time you are visiting. You don't want any bad surprises!

"Very average hotel "

We've stayed for 4 nights in this hotel. Reception staff wasn't friendly, even though they all spoke good English. The room didn't look anything like a 3 star hotel. They offer, however, free parking and breakfast, and those things are very nice to have in very expensive Norway. The hotel is quite far away from the city centre, but reachable even by foot.

"Quiet with spectacular views"
08/05/15 15426 Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The hotel is a couple of kilometres out of town, but it wouldn't take too long to walk and there's free parking available if you have a car. The twin room was pretty big, with armchairs, a coffee table, and a fridge. There's free WiFi as well. The highlight is the setting - the hotel backs onto a path which runs along the shore, and the views of the mountains are spectacular. Lots of gulls and oyster catchers around as well. Breakfast was ok, with cereal, bread and cheese/meats available.

"Out of town but nice beach"

This is the only place we saw in Tromso where you need a car or bus to get there. There is no dinner facilities there but a supermarket about 5-10 minutes walk away. The hotel has decent rooms (nothing special) with a fridge and mini kitchen (hobs only). Around the hotel is a big beach that is nice to walk on. The grounds are extensive. Breakfast was good, and deserted, we could have had 20 boiled eggs each.
