The reception staff at the hotel were excellent. We had ha few issues with the room and it was sorted out in no time

The hotel is nice - rooms are clean, and it's in close proximity to UShaka, which is all we really wanted to do. The breakfast was just okay, not a whole lot of variety, and as a family that does not eat pork or beef, there weren't a whole lot of options. The staff was nice and very accommodating, which was wonderful with small kids. Only gripe - there […] was a wedding in the courtyard and we could hear everything. From the outside a quaint old fashioned look, but when you step inside the theme is as the name implies - Ship Docklands. Great retro feel and clever use of space. Close to Ushaka Marine World and Calypso Dive Centre and Durban's boardwalk. So area is entertaining for both adults and kids. The hotel "does what it says" and it was adequate for our needs. The area is an interesting mix of old dilapidated warehouses and new upmarket apartments. It is within walking distance to the Ushaka beach and various other attractions and I enjoyed the fact that the area is less noisy than the main beachfront. Great hotel. Did have some issues as only delux bedrooms have a balcony. This is different to the wording on Hotels.com. The Hotel did consider our booking and in view of this upgraded our stay free of charge. The hotel was clean and more of a business centre at times but we enjoyed our stay here. The photo on this site shows the Superior room as having a balcony facing the water, and we were given a room without one and not facing the water. We asked for a double but got two twin beds that were pushed together (common practice in RSA) with separate bedspreads. When we inquired about this, we were given the explanation that the hotel caters more […] to business travelers and less to holiday makers. (???) They did, however, set us up with a new room with king-sized sheets and a balcony facing the water. Unfortunately the new room didn't have working AC. It had a fan so we made do, though it got pretty stuffy in the room after a couple of days. We didn't say anything until the morning of the last day but it couldn't be sorted out by the same evening. Oh well. The breakfast spread is quite lovely, so we were happy with that service. When we checked out we were given a restaurant bill for a meal we didn't order. Someone (by design or accident) put his meal on our room and the reception desk was very slow in acknowledging their mistake. They first asked for my contact info because his manager wasn't in, to which I replied we would rather wait a bit to get it sorted than get a call later asking us to pay for a meal we didn't eat. Overall pretty choppy service and as this hotel opened in 2010, I suspect it still has a lot of growing up to do. Read more

I loved the hotel so much, I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel evrything was ok. The problem was when I had to go I phone the reception an hur and 15min beforeasking them to call for a cap. My transport almost left me couse I got the 2min before the depature time and I'm soppose to be the 30min before. My stay was comfortable and relaxing. The only downside is when a ship docks nearby, it becomes a bit noisy. I was unable to get into my rooms on two ocassions. The shower and basin were blocked so the water did not go down fast enough and overflowed onto the bathroom floor. The safe did not work - error code. Difficult to dry hair in front of mirror as plug and mirror far apart.

The hotel looks very nice, has an industial unfinished look which I quite liked. The rooms were very small, hardly any space to walk around. I could not hang my dresses in the wardrobe as their was not enough length in the hanging space. The small shower is tiled with black tiles which makes it a very claustrophobic. Housekeeping was lacking, no pillow […] cases on the pillow and too little towels. When I called for housekeeping to bring an extra towel, it took 2 phone calls and 30 minutes. The airconditioning didn't work on arrival and the night staff could fix it, he went to look for the night manager but he never arrived nor made contact. As they were fully booked they could not move me the second night. You would think that at least they would have fixed the airconditioner, but no. Only on the last night they moved me to a different, bigger room which was finally satisfactory. They did put a bottle of wine in the room to apologise. Breakfast is good, nice variety. Although there were many waiters walking around, it was difficult to get some service. Once you had finally managed to get the attention of a waiter, they could hardly speak English. One was actually chewing bubblegum while serving us. They had no idea what they were doing. Overall, the hotel has great potential. They just need to do something about the service aspect. Read more
