"Not a good Choice Hotel for all-inclusive resorts."
This resort has been going down hill every year. This was my third time at this resort in four years for business and will no longer be staying there. Little staff, food not to where it was and accommodations have been limited. worst part is the customer service and staff availability. I had the VIP check in and still took about 45 min to check-in with […] not a full hotel. not worth the price. The staff didn't care if I was unsatisfied with my stay or with their accommodations. The suite I was staying in needed an upgrade on the phone line. The calls were not going directly to my room, and it was difficult to talk over the phone line. When I would ask to speak to management, I would always get the run-around. i.e. "the manager was busy"..." he/she stepped out"...or "wasn't in for the day". All in all, I never got to see anyone […] in a position of authority in the time I was there. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"We stayed at this hotel which is considered the best hotel in Boca Chica. We spent over 170 us dollars to stay, and although it included beverages and food , we were disappointed in the upkeep of the hotel. The furniture was in very poor condition, and quite soiled and scratched. The bathroom was ample size and nice. The bed was a little stiff. It […] seems the rooms could use a fresh coat o f paint and new furniture. The buffet was decent, but not great. Deserts were minimal and not tasty. The staff was friendly, and there were many activities for kids. It still is probably the best choice for hotels in Boca Chica, but thats not saying much. I would rather go to another destination such as Juan Dolio, or La Romana and stay in a much nicer hotel or resort for the same or less money. I believe you pay too much of a premium for the all inclusive aspect." Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Customer service girl was the best!"
I booked a room with a king size bed but got 2 queen's. I checked in after 6 pm and though it was to late to have it changed that night but the customer service girl that works the night had me in a room 4 floors up with a better view and a king size bed in less than 15 min. She also helped me with getting my laundry picked up, reservation's , and directions […] to 3 of the many restaurants. She would greet me with a charming personality asking if there was any thing I needed. She made the whole experience special. THANK YOU! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Booked suite and received a regular room that was called a suite because its in the same building (Presidential Suites) was not worth the stay at all. Checked in, late afternoon and the room wasn't completed by housekeeping. Bed not made, wall lamp hanging off and the security safe needed new batteries. When i called the front desk, i was informed a […] staff member will come to the room. We waited 85 minutes and then called again, same thing repeated after 40 min took the walk to the front desk, (its a long one from the Presidential Suites). The front desk staff told us housekeeping is waiting for us at our room. We went back, no one there, we gave up after I called and asked for a Manager and was informed the Manager is not available. The next morning tried again, security came and informed me the safe is no good they would have to change it (I would have to wait) The cleaning problem would have to taken care of Housekeeping and the wall lamp by the engineers but we would have to be in the room for this to all happen. We laughed and went back to the front desk and asked for a manager. Again i was informed a manager is not available. I went back to the room, placed a DND sign on the door and left. This is by far the worst place I have ever been. Saying this a 2 star resort wouldn't even be close. Let me start off by saying I read all the reviews before booking. I always take them with a grain of salt because I am not picky. A vacation is what you make of it, you're not at work and you're relaxing so be happy, and after all, I didn’t need to worry, we were booked in the "suites", what a JOKE that word is! The one thing I care about is a clean room. I don't need fancy, just clean. Not only was the room disgusting the whole resort is filthy! The walk to the "suites" from the front desk says it all. You are literally in a dank walkway under the sidewalk with grates above you and filth running down the walls. I understand mold, humidity, salty air, etc., this was our 16th "tropical" trip. But that is NO EXCUSE for how dirty this place was! Our first room on the first floor was so bad, I really think something died on that floor. Our second room on the 3rd floor was still moldy, but didn't smell as bad. The no mattress pad/fitted sheet is true and the mattresses are yellowed and very stained, of course the flat sheets on the bottom never stay put so you are sleeping right on that disgusting thing. Shower was covered in mold - walls, floor and ceiling, the ceiling above the sink was molded and ready to fall on you, the "jacuzzi" tub was so gross, who would even sit in that or turn it on, yuck. The toilet didn't usually flush, the fridge was warm and rusty, the counter/work bench area was rotted and splintered, and I can't believe I'm complaining about this, but there was no COLD water in the shower. Literally it was scalding. In order to get cooler water you had to turn the faucet barely on so there was only a trickle of water, anything more was scalding hot! I could go on, but you get the idea, not a nice place. The resort was also just as dirty. The paint is peeling off the walls, there are chunks of stairs missing, and stagnant water sitting in old ponds. The beach loungers were so gross, towels threadbare and usually stained/dirty, the pools were so dirty. They were full of debris and the bottoms black with dirt/mold. I never actual got in a pool besides cooling my feet sitting on the side, they were that gross. The tables and chairs and placemats at the restaurants were always dirty/stained/sticky. I don't think I ever saw anyone wipe a table just put down new silverware. The layout of this resort was ridiculous. The buffet, entertainment, large pools/swim up bar, are in the "old" hotel across the street. So being in the "suites" it was about a 20 minute walk to eat, and not a flat walk it's up 2 flights, over a bit, down 3 flights, over a bit, up 2 flights, up 2 more, up a ramp, across the street, down 3 flights, across the way, up some more, down again, etc. - you get the idea. Do not go here if you have difficulty walking in any way. Especially if you have difficulty with stairs, you can’t trust the elevators (when they were working). With all of the power outages you will most likely get stuck at some point and these elevators are smaller than an airplane bathroom! These hotels should be separate and there should be at least a buffet in the ocean side hotel area. You could get lunch at the snack bar located by the beach, but it was only burgers and hotdogs. There was a nice bar and a couple al a cartes on the ocean side, but that was still a hike from the "suites". The prostitution and drugs in this area are very bad. I never thought it would bother me, but the old guys in the pool literally having sex with their 16 year old prostitutes was not a pretty site. We met 3 very nice, pretty young ladies from Canada who were on the garden side. They discovered that their peephole was turned around, so standing in the hall you could look into their room. Once they discovered this, they popped it out and turned it around. Later, when the floors were wet in the hallway they saw footsteps up to their door then turn around and walk away. Since you could only turn it around from inside the room, it was probably security or maintenance staff. So if for some reason you don’t heed the warning and still go here, double check your peephole. Every person we talked to said the same thing about this resort. The only thing different was the garden side was much worse than the “suites”. I can’t even imagine. One gentleman from London summed it up best when he said, this place is a pisshole. If you have already booked your stay here, take a penalty or pay a fine and go somewhere else. You will be happy you did. I am usually just happy to be at a beach in the warm weather having a drink, the rest doesn’t matter. But that was very hard to do here, however, we did make the best of it. I will give this place one positive and that’s the staff. At least the ones we encountered were great. I feel bad for the front desk staff constantly being complained to and trying to move people to different rooms. We encountered one jerk and one really nice lady at the front desk (Rachel). The bartenders were the best part of this place. Hector, Luis “Arnold” Schwarzenegger, Alfredo, and Barrack Obama to name a few. They made the place tolerable (even if the booze is totally watered down). FYI the booze is subpar to say the least, watered down and low end. The “higher” end, which we would normally consider bar pour stuff was $5 extra per drink! Now that’s just ridiculous at an all-inclusive. The Gourmet restaurant was the best of the ala cartes, the others were ok but at all places the service was extremely slow, but you’re on vacation, so what’s the hurry? The beach here is very nice. The water is calm and shallow. I thought there would be decent snorkeling, but that wasn’t the case. Watch out for the staff selling trips on the beach. They are hotel approved, but the trips are nothing like the pictures or what they say you will get. We traveled with two other couples and we all agree this was a horrible place to stay. I am amazed that anyone would give this place a decent review, that’s what swayed us into booking, thinking it can’t be all that bad. Well, I’m guessing there are maybe 10 decent rooms in this complex and that they were lucky enough to stay in one of them. Do yourself and favor and don’t stay here. I thought all the bad reviews were for the “regular” rooms, not the “suites”. Don’t be fooled this place is a pisshole.
Horrible place to stay. Staff unprofessional poor service room unsafe management staff needs customer service training.would not recommend this place to even my worst enemies . horrible place ever do not ever ever stay here you will regret it I paid for a presidential suite and could not enjoy any second of it

Could not believe the negative reviews...so went anyway. Sorry to say, even the worst reviews were true. But if you have already booked, here are my tips: 1. bring a flashlight for each member of your party: this will help during the multiple power failures, especially if you are stuck in one of the elevators 2. get an ocean view room on a higher floor: it makes a huge difference since you look out at the horizon rather than the hotel *only recommended for those without mobility issues since elevators rarely work 3. when functioning, take the elevator that goes to the beach level, the one on the casino side: you get to bypass the lobby where there is regularly someone crying or getting upset with staff about their room, their bill, their toilet not working...*do not use this elevator when the casino is open, for safety reasons 4. if you choose to book on the garden side, do not line up at reception on the ocean side when you register *do not believe the staff on the Air Canada bus who tell you otherwise 5. bring tissue paper to the bathrooms in public areas: the toilet paper rolls are not in the dispensers so will have been on the floor etc 6. if you eat burgers at the beach "snack bar", choose ones that are flat rather than the majority which curl up in a small cup shape: the latter are often pink on the edges or in the middle due to uneven cooking 7. bring packaged condiments from buffet to snack bar rather than use the open tubs of ketchup and mayonnaise 8. do not look at your mattress, the hotel does not use mattress covers 9. should you get a fabric headboard, such as in the deluxe ocean view room we had, the throw at the foot of your bed makes an excellent cover for the stained headboard 10. save your hangers from dry cleaning to supplement the 8 you are given 11. get to the beach early to reserve a chair, there aren't enough for guests and there seem to be day trips for locals to the beach and conventions for Dominicans that balloon the numbers 12. do not visit the Pelican restaurant: it will eliminate the rationale that the reason for dysfunction is the country's standards. The Pelican demonstrates that Be Live management knows perfectly well how to run food services safely with courteous staff. 13. do visit the Neptune restaurant that opened down the street (5 minute walk) a month ago: superb service, decor, food...on the water -again this will contradict any theories you hold about low standards being the norm in the Dominican 14. do take a Spanish phrase book: few staff are fluent in English or French (the 2 languages spoken by most by guests) but do not expect better response to your needs by speaking Spanish (I speak Spanish) 15. do not eat the omelets unless you like them fried on both sides in deep oil before being folded 16. when you see a fruit in the buffet that you like, take it right away: it will be replaced by different fruit when the tray is empty 17. if you are bothered by shoddy workmanship and design, get over it unless your toilet or something else essential needs attention, then go to guest services to report it, ideally in the morning *avoid the "art gallery" in the stairwells unless you like dark humour 18. ask your room cleaners for extra bottles of water to be stocked daily: no one else will give you any 19. if you like being around smokers, you will have a great time: the hotel's generous smoking rules and guests' enthusiastic response will suit you well 20. finally, DO spend your day at the beach: the ocean is very calm and therefore safe for children and the over inebriated and the rec staff are keeners... plus then you don't have to look at the hotel or your room. Bon voyage
"AVERAGE HOTEL WITH AMAZING STAFF!!!!!"
03/23/15 GChevalier New York City, New York
I hate to start off on a bad note so let me begin with all the good things the hotel has to offer and what I liked. I stayed The entertainment staff alone makes it worth it to come to this hotel. We stayed at the hotel 9 nights and when we left we felt like we were leaving family behind. Starting with El Brujo, this man went way above and beyond to make our stay so much fun. From his outrageous outbursts every time he saw us to taking us out in the town and buying us drinks and the most delicious fresh fish. We always felt safe and he kept the sellers and hustlers at bay. The rest of the entertainment staff was just as amazing... Roberto, Topolino, Socrates, Jenny, Genesis, Johnathan and even Happy Happy, even though he was only there for a couple of days at the beginning of our trip. This amazing team is lead by an awesome director of entertainment. The rest of the staff at the hotel was just as great. The bartenders are so attentive, remembering the drinks that you like and even delivering them to you right in the pool so you don't have to get out. Rafael and Nelson at the beach bar especially stood out. The nightly shows were entertaining and they have some very talented dancers and performers. Now on to the not so great things about the hotel. NO FREE WIFI!!!! Not even in the lobby or by the pool. They charge a ridiculous price for wifi access for only one device. We also had a horrible experience checking in, we had to change our rooms at least 3 times because they gave my room to someone else with the same last name. In the end after speaking with the manager they upgraded us to ocean view rooms. Later on we found out that the person checking us in had only been there for 5 days. The food could also use some improvement. 4 of the 6 of us traveling got sick during our stay. We think its due to the food not being kept at the appropriate temperatures and just left sitting there for hours. If you go without too many high expectations of the hotel itself and with a mind to have fun then you will enjoy your stay. Im sure most of the very negative reviews were from the old cranky people that were staying at the hotel. If you want total peace and quite then do yourself a favor and stay at a different hotel. If you want a fun vacation without spending too much money then come hang out with El Brujo and the rest of the entertainment staff and bar tenders.

My fiancee and I have been coming to this resort for the last 3 consecutive years. I've reviewed this resort once before after our first visit, this is an updated review. We learned on our first trip here, after spending one night in the garden view room that if you want a better experience and a superior room, you need to upgrade to an ocean view suite. With this in mind, when we booked our following visits, we just booked ocean view suites from there on out. The majority of people I see giving this resort a bad review are people who stayed in the garden view suites. My recollection of the garden view was that these rooms were not renovated yet whereas the ocean view was. The ocean view books up fast, so upgrading may not be an option. In the three years we have been coming, we have seen major renovations completed in between times that we have been there. This includes seeing the buffet restaurant overhauled and more open, fresh paint on the walls, additional landscaping, the addition of hammocks on the beach. This place is eventually making itself out to be a very clean and well maintained property. The rooms on the ocean view side are very good, we had no complaints about our room. It was kept clean by the housekeeper, our minibar was stocked on a daily basis with pop and beer, bottled water was replaced daily, towels were changed... I had no issues with our room. The process of checking in had been streamlined also in the years we have been coming. We were taken care of promptly by friendly staff, most of them recognized us from the years before and were very happy to see us back. All in all, the process took ten minutes. The lines at check in do get very long however when charter vacations arrive. The bars at the resort remain the same as previous years. The drinks are mixed well, they don't always know how to make more exotic drinks, but they know how to make a good mojito, caipariena, margarita, etc. The only thing that sucks is that all the bars close around midnight, with the exception of the disco bar. The disco is not very fun, enough said about that. The restaurants on the resort are good. The buffet is a good standby. They have theme nights and we were there for their Canadian Night. The food did not necessarily remind me of home; the "poutine" was fries with spiced ground beef and cheese sauce. But the effort they put into it was awesome, including a large sheet cake with a Canadian and Quebec flag. The buffet does well, but it's typical buffet food; it's bland (they need to cater to a few thousand people all with different tastes from all over the globe), the meat is usually cooked well done, and the translations of some of the dishes are misleading (one day there was "peasant soup" on the menu... why are we eating poor people?). The a la carte restaurants were okay; the Brazilian had in the past been very good, but this time not so much. The Mexican has always had issues with service, but the food is actually good. The Dominican Gourmet is nice, but again, it's somewhat bland. The Italian would make Italians cry. My advice eating at all the restuarants; ASK FOR SALT. The nice thing about this resort is that you can book at the a la carte restaurants as often as you want, they don't limit their guests. All book up fast, so get your reservations early. If you have to eat any of your meals at the buffet, all their meal times are extended so it's not difficult to get in, and I found it to be accommodating. The seafood restaurant, Pelicano, is not part of the all inclusive, but is amazing. The seafood is fresh, the tastes are well combined, the view is beautiful. In total we stayed 8 nights. We had a great time. We would come back again because we find for the price we pay, for the time of year that we travel, we get what we want. The service at the resort is very good, the people are friendly and the effort they put into your comfort is better than I find in some Canadian and American hotels. We book our visits to the resort usually 6 months in advance; you get the cheapest price booking well in advance. We paid $1466 US for two adults/8 nights/ocean view suite. We purchased our flights separate from the resort, and flew through the US which cost us each $500 US. Looking at the same package as a last minute deal, you're paying approximately the same price for 7 days in a garden view room. The cost to upgrade to an ocean view suite is $50/night. To a weary traveler who is unsatisfied with their room, this cost comes as a shock. As well, speaking of charter package vacations, especially packages from Canada; most charters for this region of the Dominican only fly into Punta Cana. Punta Cana is approximately 3 hours away, and the bus makes stops for "bathroom breaks" which is really them stopping at a local souvenir stand for traveler's to spend money at. If you decide to book this trip with flights and hotel separately, fly into Santo Domingo; its 20 minutes away (no Canadian airlines fly direct to Santo Domingo, so you have to book a US flight). A few bits of advice to keep in mind. As mentioned, get an ocean view room. Be aware the Dominican Republic is still classified as 3rd world, their standards are vastly different from Canadian and American standards. The resort bills itself as a 4 star resort, by our standards its closer to a 3 star. The resort is located in a town called Boca Chica. The town is impoverished, there are a lot of prostitutes and offers of drugs. If this is not what you are looking for, just say "no thanks" and keep walking. The town is relatively safe during the day, feel free to go out in groups, at night, its a little scary... go out at your own risk. The security at the resort does its best to keep the locals away from the property and coming in. The ocean view resort and garden view resort used to be two separate resorts, there is a small road that separates the two, and you do have to go to either side to go to the beach, to the buffet, to the disco, to the theater. It's a narrow road, and the crossings are patrolled by security, as well the road is heavily patrolled by the Politur (Tourist Police). This really is not a big deal. The entertainment at the theater by the resort staff is slightly homophobic, and can be slightly offensive to LGBTQ people. This is not necessarily the attitude they have toward LGBTQ people, its more a reflection of the old stereotypes in their culture. My fiancee and I are a same sex couple, and we had no issues with having a room with one bed; servers, bar staff, front desk and other staff at the resort had no issue with us. Keep in mind, the town the resort is located in, the country's poorly planned electric grid is not a reflection of the resort itself. They take pride in offering people a relaxing and all inclusive experience. They also don't control the behaviour and attitudes of other travelers that come to this resort. This may be an unpopular opinion, and a negative statement, but honestly the Russian tourists who visited at the same time as we were there lacked a degree of politeness and social grace. When there were physical altercations (and we only saw four incidents) it was Russian tourists fighting with each other, and in one case beating up a Canadian tourist. Given the example of others, we honestly just kept away from the Russian tourists. This division between tourist nationalities was actually practiced by many others also.

I stayed at the Be Live Resorts in Puerto Plata for 4 nights recently and overall it was a great experience. All of the people working at the resort are super nice and friendly. My only qualm is the buffet food. It was just a bit bland after the 2nd day and we found ourselves wanting to venture off. Luckily, the a la carte dinners that you need to make reservations for were wonderful. Make sure you go to the Caribbean gourmet one because it just has great ambience and food is great! Wifi is incredibly expensive, but if you need to stay connected for the trip, there are possibilities. $25 for 25 hours, $4 for 15, etc. Drinks are pretty delish. The bar located next to the lobby is always the best! Make sure to order a Banana Mama. Delish. Overall its a great 3 star experience. Don't expect luxury, but expect good grounds, friendly people, and a great beach! We love watching the sunset. Also if you do decide to venture out, make sure you try to go to Sosua. The cab ride over can be kind of pricey but definitely worth the trip to see a more quaint Dominican Republic. There is absolutely nothing to do in 'downtown' Puerto Plata so the $30 cab ride is not even worth it. Although the great thing with these cab rides is that the driver stays with you the whole time, so there is added safety.

We stayed for 3 weeks in February and had a wonderful time. Our room was on the first floor in the hotel facing the beach. Check-in was easy it took 20 minutes and that was because there was another couple before us. The room was clean and ready when we arrived. The air conditioner was on and the room was cool. There was always plenty of hot water to take a shower. The TV worked well and had over 100 channels, many of the channels were in Spanish but there were many English channels as well. The mini bar had a couple of beers, Cokes, Sprites and water. They replenished the fridge every day. We were there for a wedding and the iron and ironing board worked well. I used the coffee maker everyday and there was no problem! The food was good and they always seemed to have a variety so if you did not like chicken they had fish or beef or pork. We always found something we enjoyed and there was plenty of food. The bars were busy but it was no problems getting a drink. The gym was clean and all the equipment worked. The gym was also air-conditioned. The two pools at the beach were nice and clean. The beach is the nicest part, it not the biggest but definitely one of the prettiest. The water is clear and shallow. There are no big waves to worry about and this place is great even if you are a non swimmer. The snorkelling is excellent! The staff was wonderful and they do try to help where they can. I speak very little Spanish but I was able to get what I needed and tipping once in a while didn't hurt either. I found this vacation to be a good value for your money and are planning to return next year!
"Great stay at Hamaca Beach (March 8-12)"

Prior to our trip I read all the reviews and I was extremely skeptical. I think we only had one issue that is worth mentioning and that is that the fridge in our room didn't stay very cold. Would have been nice to have cold water. We originally had a room booked on the garden side, but upgraded to the ocean view. Much better view on that side. This was my wife's first time at an all inclusive and my second. Our AC worked extremely well, in fact we had to wake up in the middle of the night several times to shut it off because we were freezing. We booked our trip via Expedia and were pleasantly surprised to find a Expedia rep at the airport with our names on a placard waiting for us. They arranged both the travel to and from the hotel - airport upon arrival and departure. We didn't expect that. Several of the reviews made an issue of getting chairs at the beach. A few days we had to walk around to find them, but the beach is small enough to be able to drag them wherever you choose to sit. We were able to find shade sitting every day. We had to share a few times, but that only sparked up conversation which was nice. We met some Canadians on day 2 and spent the remainder of our time with them. It was nice to have other folks our age (32-42) able to hang out with. Check in time is at 3:00, and you won't be able to get into your room any earlier. That was fine with us. We checked our bags with the bellman and went down to the beach and bar until 3 and had no issues. The food wasn't a 5 star resort food, but overall it was pretty good. Make sure you make your reservations early in the morning because they fill up pretty fast. We usually got down there about 0900 and were able to get times easy. A few nights we went to dinner earlier and were allowed to eat an hour or so earlier than our reservation time. Since we arrived late on our first day, we weren't able to book dinner reservations, but the buffet hit the spot. There is a huge variety of dishes to choose from, and we left with our bellies full. There is even a whole aisle just for deserts. If you like sweets, you're gonna love it, The last night we had dinner at the gourmet and it was fabulous. I chose the calamari appetizer and shouldn't have. I was hurting the next day. Steer clear of the calamari. I've heard the same from other folks, but I thought I had a pretty strong stomach. NOPE..... It still hurt! We couldn't find where to get the snorkeling gear from, but we brought our goggles and it worked out just fine. Bring a big cup to drink from. We ended up buying 2 cups from the gift shop. The bartenders will fill any size cup with your beverage of choice. The bartenders will pour alcohol with as much as you like, so be careful. My wife had a few too many on one day and spent the next day recovering. They have onsite security and not once did we fill we were in any danger. We ventured out one day looking for gifts, but outside the resort there isn't anything so don't waste your time. My wife stepped on something sharp and got a piece in her foot and without asking, one of the staff quickly ran over and proceeded to remove the barb in her foot. That was an additional nicety. The entertainment staff are extraordinary!!!! There was always something going on for everyone to participate in if you choose. That had half the beach crowd in the water doing water aerobics one day. The staff was always doing something to improve the hotel. From painting to construction. There were several reviews commenting on the appearance. When you are near salt water, you're going to encounter mold and stain issues. That's just part of it. The staff are busy fixing it on a daily issue. We had a wonderful experience at Hamaca and would return again. If you're looking for a 5 star resort, go to Punta Cana, but if you want to save money and still have a wonderful time, then Be Live resorts are perfect. If you would like to ask additional questions, please feel free to reply to my review.
"My first resort ever."

This was the first resort i have ever been to. after reading the poor reviews i was worried. Our room had hot water, a king size bed and everything worked except the air conditioning. We were given new towels and water each day along with a restocked minibar. We stayed in the garden side. The food wasn't the greatest but i was always able to find something good to eat. The beach was busy because it was small but very nice. the staff can be slightly rude due to the language barrier but its easy to look passed. i had a blast every night and met some awesome people. The biggest downfall for me was that the bars close at 12 and you must go to the disco if you want more booze. I would choose a different resort the next time i travel but have little complaints about the resort. Stayed mar 6- 13th 2015 If you fly into punta cana there is a 3 hour bus ride to this resort. Also this resort is basically in the middle of downtown, not quite the best for kids.
