"A Great Location for My Visit"
This was me second stay at the historic Great Expectations. As with many British hotels there are lots of stairs to climb. The room was comfortable, the water hot, Wi-Fi solid, and the cooked breakfast well above average. The place can be a little noisy before midnight due to the entertainment in the bar or, on this trip, the World Cup. As I needed […] to be two blocks south of the hotel, the location was great. It is an easy walk to the railway station, Oracle and other shopping. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Original flight was cancelled and I arrived very early the next day, the staff was very helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good breakfast but not recommended"
Very disappointing. Tiny, ugly, inconvenient room. Tiny work surface with no work light, so no good for road warriors. Often indifferent service. Hotel is attached to a noisy bar so don't expect to be able to get to sleep until after midnight. Hotel reception is at the far end of the bar, so checking in during drinking hours is no treat. Only positive […] is the complimentary cooked-to-order full English breakfast. And Dickens fans will enjoy the ubiquitous Dickensiana in the breakfast/bar area in honour of his having once visited this haven of hospitality. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Expectations - Not disappointed"
We loved the pub atmosphere. The stairs could have been difficult with our luggage but the staff helped and we managed by ourselves on the way down. Great location - we were close to the town central and ALL the venues. Easy to catch buses and easy to and from the trains.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Well-worn but pleasant."
I stayed here for 9 nights while doing research at the University of Reading and overall found it to be an enjoyable experience. The hotel's location is great and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The Dickens-themed bar downstairs is a nice place to have a quiet pint or get some work done, and a good cooked breakfast is included in the price […] of the room. I found my room to be well-worn and quite basic but comfortable and clean. Some of the facilities could use a little updating--in particular, the water in the shower tended to fluctuate in temperature quite a bit. Also, just a warning if you have mobility limitations or things like baby strollers to lug around all the time: this could be a challenge because the rooms are up at least a couple of flights of stairs and I don't believe they have a lift. Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and would recommend it if you want a cheap room/breakfast in central Reading. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Expectations Not Fully Realised"
I realize that this is an owner run establishment and recognize that challenges that go with that. However, with such a great building in a perfect location this hotel would benefit from a big investment and update such as TVs that work, telephones in the room, and redecorating bedrooms and bathrooms. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was INCREDIBLE […] but while "mate" and "cheers" may communicate character the use of "sir" and "thank you" would help to communicate class. "Cheap and OK Accommodation to City Centre"
Staff accommodating and helpful. Breakfast was good. Room was pretty basic but clean. Good location to city centre. No elevator so lots of steps to climb. Thursday to Saturday evenings loud music from pub below. Beds noisy and uncomfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
Never managed to get any hot water out of the shower.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Adequate hotel for price and my needs"
Arrived mid-afternoon and had to walk into the bar itself to find the one barperson to assist me.Checked-in and paid and got my door key. I was not asked if I needed any help with my bags, so I had to manage myself in carrying a 20kg bag up 2 flights of stairs and through 3 fire doors. Room comfortable and adequate for this price range. Breakfast was […] good and staff arranged a taxi for me to get to the train station. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

served the purpose of my two day stay in reading. Basic and simple accomodation in central Reading was fine for this busines trip.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value for money"
Everything is great. The only downside to this hotel is not having a lift. Specially if they put you on the second floor. Apart from that, it fullfilled my great expectations!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good loaction, Shame about car parking!"
Nice hotel and good food (price and quality). Great location of Reading Town Center. Only dowside is car parking (or lack fo, to be precise) which isn't mentioned online when booking. That said, if you can find a space on the road after 8pm, it is free until 8 am.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Lovely character Hotel close to town centre"
We had a great experience in this historic hotel - Charles Dickens. The room was very clean, bed was comfortable and noise level minimal to none existing. The staff are very friendly and breakfast is good. Lovely atmosphere in the pub linked to the hotel. We can recommend this hotel. "interesting place... a bit weird."
It was more like a haunted house. More for people that want to party.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very good location"
the room was so noisy that I could hardly sleep during the night. it was constant noise from the bathroom. Whenever people staying in nearby rooms flushed the toilet or showered, the noise waked me up. Then the noise I believe from heating system or boiler made the stay unbearable. The room was OK, taking into account it's only 3 star hotel, no elevator, […] so you have to carry all your luggage by yourself, and the stairs are very steep. The bathroom was clean, although they do not change the towels (I stayed for three nights). They serve English breakfast, it's good. the hotel location is great, two minutes walk from the town centre and shops and restaurants. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Quick Stay. Good value!"
I booked this room at the last minute as a stopping place while attending the Reading festival.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great experience, value for money and convenient.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I didn't stay in "Great Expectations" with great expectations. It was inexpensive, and in between the two places I needed to go when in Reading on business. But even my moderate expectations were challenged. The rooms are dated, the staff bizarre and the hotel in desperate need of some TLC. The room was very noisy from both street noise and through […] wall ambiance created by the ill gentleman in the room next to me. But the price was right, the area was safe, the breakfast was included... So who am I to complain! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A fantastic location for my work"
As I had read previous reviews, I knew to walk through the bar, and easily found reception. The woman who assisted me was very helpful, and when I asked if there was a lift, as there was not, she offered to carry my luggage to my room. The room was clean and had a hairdryer as well as toillettries, which is always a good thing. I found a number of places […] near by to eat at, as the hotel is VERY close to the big shopping malls in Reading. I slept well even though there was some sound from the bar, it did not cause me any inconvenience. The breakfast was GREAT with a lot of choice and when I asked if my egg could be poached and not fried, this was done! They had even purchased soya milk as I had requested that I did not drink milk which was very kind. Overall I will definitely stay here again if I find myself working in the same place in Rerading again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was very NICE,the staff were friendly & efficient even though check in was at the end of a busy bar. The room was very clean as was the bathroom. As I had to check out early I didn't get a change to eat breakfast but I will definitely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Less than average unfortunately"
Can't fault the place on price and location, right next to the Oracle. Unfortunately the rooms are a bit grubby and shabby and the whole place just has a weird feel to it. The top cover on my bed had a huge stain on it and also lipstick on another bit... the cleaners could not have missed these so it can only be pure dirtiness. The sheets underneath […] were spotless but even so, I was shocked and disgusted. The staff there are ok, but I wouldn't say the service if great unfortunately. Parking across the road is about £3.50 after 6pm until 8am the next morning which is good, but if you get back to your car at 8:01am then it does from £3.50 to £15 which is a rip off. This was my second stay here but (un)fortunately I think it will be my last. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Ten minutes walk from Reading station. Though we had truck gold when we saw the number of beer pumps, but alas beer not much cop. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Free WiFi connection. Would stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clean, convenient, good value"
at 6'2" I struggle a little in a single bed, but it's still great value and close to town centre so easy to get to after a night out!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Everything was fine except for the pub noise..."
Whilst there's nothing excellent about the hotel, for the price it does everything well enough. The room was a good size, comfortable and clean (except for some bad staining to the carpet). The bathroom had been recently redecorated and was excellent. Full English breakfast was slightly better than you'd expect in a cheap hotel. Our only real complaint […] was the noise from the bar. Admitedly we were staying in a city centre on a Saturday night so would have expected some noise, but it's unfortunate that it's the hotel's own pub that has music so loud that it stops it's own guests from getting to sleep. It closed at midnight though, so it wasn't a big problem, and I think we were just unfortunate that our room was located over the noisiest bit of the bar. If you want a cheap hotel that does the job then go for it, but be warned that the price may include loud music until midnight. Looking at it another way, the bar is pretty good if you're there for a night out! Well located for train station, shopping and Thames Path, and good restauranta nearby. "The Great Expectations Reading"
The hotel is modernly decorated in the corridor, however, a refurbishment of the rooms are likely to be needed in the next 5-10 years, in order to catch up with the standards. The room was cosy and good for 2-3 nights stay. If you want good quality rooms, there are travel lodge and Premier Inn kicking around. However, I cannot argue in terms of value […] for this because you get an Ensuite with breakfast which was very good. The location is excellent, within 10 mins walk from the station and 5 mins walk perhaps to the Oracle shopping centre. The staffs were ok friendly but don't expect a professional service. The atmosphere in the bar was exceptional. However, the room I stayed in could have been better kept. I would suggests that if you are looking for a budget stay for one night, this would be an excellent choice in all reading Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"nice hotel,excellent location-just take earplugs"
I liked the hotel, very good value for money, lovely atmosphere - lovely staff, good pub. Just the walls are sooo thin, I could understand every single word of the phone conversations next door. Then I bought earplugs (in the nearby Oracle centre..) and was just fine.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The people we met when irriving The hotel where relaxed, accommodating and very polite. The hotel room we got was huge, and otherwise as we had expected. And The breakfast was also very good! The hotel was just what we neededGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Halvsunkigt, men ganska charmigt"
Trevlig o avslappnad personal.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cheap - yes!! Quality - not so much!"
If you are on a budget and want something cheap I guess Relaxinnz Great Expectations is tempting. However, I'm not sure it is worth it. Rooms are NOT up to standard, dirty carpets and smells aweful - at least mine did. Breakfast is det only good thing I have to say aboutr this place. I will not go back!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I had a good stay there especially because of the excellent service by hotel/bar staff. Initially I found the room not overly comfortable because there was only a small stool by the desk. But when I mentioned it to the staff below, I was immediately allowed to take a comfy chair from the hallway and use it in my room. Also the breakfast service was […] great. Special requests are dealt with very courteously. Room cleaning was good too. If you bring a car, there is the problem of expensive parking (15 pounds a day, though there is a cheaper place nearby which I didn't go to because I found the owner there there not too friendly and he also charged extra for night parking) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was great and the service was immaculate. The staff was beyond accommodating and very nice. The walls of the rooms are very thin. You can hear what the next room is talking about, but if you tell the staff, they will make sure to move you to another room. I will definitely stay at this hotel again, especially because of the staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
