"Historic hotel in the heart of Reading"
Funky hotel above a pub. Services a cook to order full English breakfast with your room. Rooms are not fancy, but tough to beat for the price. Pub has a Dickens theme with several alcoves that aren't loud, and there is even one snooker table. Thursday night is quiz night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Just about onay"
Check in staff wee great. However, the room was poor, it wasn't clean. Carpet stained, the walls had holes in them. The room was noisy you could hear the TV from nearby rooms. The breakfast staff were very slow ages to take order and bring breakfast. Have to ask for service.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A little work, but a good experience."
The stairs are a bit much when you are taking your luggage to your room, but the personnel were friendly and helpful. The room wasn't large, but very clean and neat. It is very close to the train station.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cosy hotel close to downtown"
Other than a little tear on the wallpaper, it was a nice and clean room, and I loved the cosy little breakfast roomGenuine Expedia guest review
"Could be really nice."
Had charm, good location and friendly and accommodating staff. Room was comfortable and spacious, but needed serious update! Carpet in bad condition and wasn't clean. (Staff in charge of cleaning was negligent.) When brought to their attention, staff came quickly to vacuum, but that didn't correct the sad appearance. Bed comfortable, but had to ask […] staff to contact facility next door to tone down noise from Saturday night band or close their windows. That was handled quickly. Hallways and stairs to rooms were very hot and stuffy. Excellent breakfast! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A Great Location for My Visit"
This was me second stay at the historic Great Expectations. As with many British hotels there are lots of stairs to climb. The room was comfortable, the water hot, Wi-Fi solid, and the cooked breakfast well above average. The place can be a little noisy before midnight due to the entertainment in the bar or, on this trip, the World Cup. As I needed […] to be two blocks south of the hotel, the location was great. It is an easy walk to the railway station, Oracle and other shopping. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Original flight was cancelled and I arrived very early the next day, the staff was very helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good breakfast but not recommended"
Very disappointing. Tiny, ugly, inconvenient room. Tiny work surface with no work light, so no good for road warriors. Often indifferent service. Hotel is attached to a noisy bar so don't expect to be able to get to sleep until after midnight. Hotel reception is at the far end of the bar, so checking in during drinking hours is no treat. Only positive […] is the complimentary cooked-to-order full English breakfast. And Dickens fans will enjoy the ubiquitous Dickensiana in the breakfast/bar area in honour of his having once visited this haven of hospitality. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Expectations - Not disappointed"
We loved the pub atmosphere. The stairs could have been difficult with our luggage but the staff helped and we managed by ourselves on the way down. Great location - we were close to the town central and ALL the venues. Easy to catch buses and easy to and from the trains.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Well-worn but pleasant."
I stayed here for 9 nights while doing research at the University of Reading and overall found it to be an enjoyable experience. The hotel's location is great and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The Dickens-themed bar downstairs is a nice place to have a quiet pint or get some work done, and a good cooked breakfast is included in the price […] of the room. I found my room to be well-worn and quite basic but comfortable and clean. Some of the facilities could use a little updating--in particular, the water in the shower tended to fluctuate in temperature quite a bit. Also, just a warning if you have mobility limitations or things like baby strollers to lug around all the time: this could be a challenge because the rooms are up at least a couple of flights of stairs and I don't believe they have a lift. Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and would recommend it if you want a cheap room/breakfast in central Reading. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Expectations Not Fully Realised"
I realize that this is an owner run establishment and recognize that challenges that go with that. However, with such a great building in a perfect location this hotel would benefit from a big investment and update such as TVs that work, telephones in the room, and redecorating bedrooms and bathrooms. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was INCREDIBLE […] but while "mate" and "cheers" may communicate character the use of "sir" and "thank you" would help to communicate class. "Great place with character!"
It was great! We were in Reading from the US for a family visit and found this a wonderful place for our two-room group to enjoy with the Pub, breakfast and more. There was a bit of noise during the night from the back alley, but overall a great property to hang your hat for a night or two.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very welcoming and great value. Close to the Oracle and Town Centre as well as having a lively pub downstairs. I have to give a big thumbs up for the breakfast. Definitely one of the best I've had in years of travelling and everything on the full English was tasty and well cooked. Would stay again without a doubt.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Do not recommend!"
The place was not clean and it is very old. I do not recommend staying there and I will not stay there in future.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value stay"
Like other reviewers I thought there were a few maintenance issues to deal with, but as the hotel had the decorators in whilst I was there, perhaps other travellers will find things in better order. Highlights were the helpful friendly staff and good straightforward food. My room had some design issues which would make it difficult to clean really thoroughly, […] but it was comfortable enough and good value. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Very poor on this occasion. Stayed for several nights the towels were not changed despite leaving them on the floor, towels put on the the rails. Disgusting. The bed sheets were not changed either the bed was barely made. The floor hasn't been cleaned. Had all of the pieces from the bed. The rooms generally are noisy you can hear the tv next door. A mixed bag. Full marks to the staff, who were ever ready to help. As there was no lift, I’d have had to climb two steep flights of stairs to the room originally assigned to us, a major task with my bad leg. However we were transferred with little fuss to a room with twin beds on the first floor – perfect. Breakfast too carried no surprises and was […] quite satisfactory. The main ‘let-down’ was the noisy plumbing! There was also some revelry on the first night but it ended (around midnight) just as I was bracing myself for a sleepless night and turned out to be a ‘one-off’. All in all, I’d rate our stay as very good value at the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great value and convenient"
I needed to be in central Reading and find somewhere inexpensive and this place was perfect even though it has no parking. When I arrived the staff were fabulously friendly and helpful. The room, although described as superb on the website, was far from that. The decor was shabby and the mattress a very cheap one but it's not less than I expected for […] the price to be honest. In the morning the waitress at breakfast wasn't great, minimal eye contact and quite dour, but the breakfast itself was lavish and tasty. I didn't get to try the bar out but it looked fun and quirky and I love the whole Dickens theme. According to Expedia I'd have to show photo ID on arrival and leave my room by 10am on the Sunday - neither of these points was accurate. Check out time was 11am, and breakfast is served until 10. "Comfy convenient clean and cheap"
Considering how cheap for a single room no complaints at all - I just needed somewhere to crash for the night in Reading and this is the best option for price/close to town. Breakfast again simple but good - plus old school filter coffee you can help yourself to which is handy after a night on the town. Would use again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Basic accommodation, close to the own centre."
The hotel is quite close to the historic centre of Reading and The Oracle shopping centre with it's riverside bars and restaurants. The accommodation is quite basic and the decor and facilities are a bit dated. Staff, while friendly are a bit disorganised with no dedicated resource to any particular task. e.g. To check in, one had to walk through the […] bar, wait for the barman to finish serving customers and then be checked in. "My stay at Great Expectations"
The hotel is situated in a great location and very close to the main shopping area. The bar staff are very friendly and helpful. I was very disappointed with the room. Although the bed was very comfortable the carpet was really dirty. The Dust was hanging from the light shades. The toilet looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in a while. The bath […] was dirty and the shower curtain was covered in scum. Not very pleasant.it was also very noisy at night. The handles on the windows were broken off so it was impossible to close the windows. The cleaning staff were not very friendly. The room was on the second floor and there is no lift so climbing two flights of very steep steps proved difficult. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Useful for a stop over"
Basic hotel, which was adequate for a two night stop over, but not recommended if you require comfort and luxury. Rooms were 'tired' as were the towels and bed linen. Chosen for location near the canal, which we were walking along. There was a mixup with the booking which was on the hotel system as the following day, but the staff were able to remedy this after a short while. "we never come back"
we arrived to the hotel at 10pm and we had to waiting more that 30 minutes in order to have the key of our room becuse the staff lost it. After half an hour spent in the bar we suggested to the guy to give us the master key. The room was nice and big enough but cleaniness was terrible. The bathroom was really dirty and the the bed sheets seemed not […] fresh. But we did not tell anything because was really late and we understood that there was none on the housekeeping staff to clean it. But the worse thing happened in the morning because after breakfast one unkind person star to knock on our door one hour before the check out time asking us at what time we planned to leave the room (very unpolite manner to approach to the guest). We asked for a late check out for just 30 minutes explained that we arrived very late the night before ect. but she did not agree. Furthermore, she came other twice to knock on our door inviting us to leave the room (and were just 5 minutes after the check out time, where I was clearly pack my stuff). "Adequate hotel for price and my needs"
Arrived mid-afternoon and had to walk into the bar itself to find the one barperson to assist me.Checked-in and paid and got my door key. "Good loaction, Shame about car parking!"
Nice hotel and good food (price and quality). Great location of Reading Town Center. Only dowside is car parking (or lack fo, to be precise) which isn't mentioned online when booking. That said, if you can find a space on the road after 8pm, it is free until 8 am.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very good location"
the room was so noisy that I could hardly sleep during the night. it was constant noise from the bathroom. Whenever people staying in nearby rooms flushed the toilet or showered, the noise waked me up. Then the noise I believe from heating system or boiler made the stay unbearable. The room was OK, taking into account it's only 3 star hotel, no elevator, […] so you have to carry all your luggage by yourself, and the stairs are very steep. The bathroom was clean, although they do not change the towels (I stayed for three nights). Great experience, value for money and convenient.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I didn't stay in "Great Expectations" with great expectations. It was inexpensive, and in between the two places I needed to go when in Reading on business. But even my moderate expectations were challenged. The rooms are dated, the staff bizarre and the hotel in desperate need of some TLC. The room was very noisy from both street noise and through […] wall ambiance created by the ill gentleman in the room next to me. But the price was right, the area was safe, the breakfast was included... So who am I to complain! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A fantastic location for my work"
As I had read previous reviews, I knew to walk through the bar, and easily found reception. The woman who assisted me was very helpful, and when I asked if there was a lift, as there was not, she offered to carry my luggage to my room. The room was clean and had a hairdryer as well as toillettries, which is always a good thing. I found a number of places […] near by to eat at, as the hotel is VERY close to the big shopping malls in Reading. I slept well even though there was some sound from the bar, it did not cause me any inconvenience. The breakfast was GREAT with a lot of choice and when I asked if my egg could be poached and not fried, this was done! They had even purchased soya milk as I had requested that I did not drink milk which was very kind. Overall I will definitely stay here again if I find myself working in the same place in Rerading again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was very NICE,the staff were friendly & efficient even though check in was at the end of a busy bar. The room was very clean as was the bathroom. As I had to check out early I didn't get a change to eat breakfast but I will definitely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Less than average unfortunately"
Can't fault the place on price and location, right next to the Oracle. Unfortunately the rooms are a bit grubby and shabby and the whole place just has a weird feel to it. The top cover on my bed had a huge stain on it and also lipstick on another bit... the cleaners could not have missed these so it can only be pure dirtiness. The sheets underneath […] were spotless but even so, I was shocked and disgusted. The staff there are ok, but I wouldn't say the service if great unfortunately. Parking across the road is about £3.50 after 6pm until 8am the next morning which is good, but if you get back to your car at 8:01am then it does from £3.50 to £15 which is a rip off. This was my second stay here but (un)fortunately I think it will be my last. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
