Hotel Grand Godwin - New Delhi

We spent 2 nights at the Hotel Grand Godwin. There are 2 buildings next to each other, the discount hotel and the deluxe version. They look the same from the outside. We stayed at the discount one. The staff were very friendly, though sometimes took a while to provide a service (like bringing a blowdryer to our room). On the other hand, when we informed […] them of a leak in the bathroom from the room above, they changed our room and took care of the problem. In general, the rooms are very nice, bright and comfortable. Breakfast is served on the 5th floor of the deluxe building. It's small, but with a variety of options. The staff there are very helpful and can special order omelettes or delicious chai tea for you. They will even carry your food back to your room if you so desire. We can't say much about the area though. Our local friend described it as the "backpacker's area", being off the beaten path (a little) and on a small side street. However, getting around by car or little autos (tuk-tuks) is incredibly easy...and the staff know about how much you should be charged to go to various sites, which helps when preparing for negotiations. :) Read more

I didn't pay much for my stay, so I would say I got what I should have expected. The room was very basic and shabby. This didn't concern me much. What surprised me was the location. The hotel is located centrally as stated in the description; however, the area is crowded, dirty, and smelly. Room service people were scarily intense (part of being single female traveler in India, I guess). The manager was not accommodating when I asked about trips outside of Delhi. He was not helpful and honest about my traveling options. I ended up paying for the 3-days trip to Jaipur, and I would not recommend it to anyone. The street noise was way too high, and most of that noise was dogs barking. I thought I wanted nothing more than for the dogs to shut up, until they actually did. I hadn't realized that the dogs were masking the incessant Kenny G music playing in the corridor. I wanted the dogs back. This was our second stay at the Grand Godwin and we will stay there again. We like the location as it is a short auto-rickshaw ride from the New Delhi Railway Station and Connaught Place. Paharganj, where the hotel is situated, is a bustling crowded market area with a huge choice of mid-level and cheap restaurants aimed at local as well as foreign tourists. […] Despite appearances, it is as safe as anywhere in Delhi. The complimentary breakfast on the rooftop restaurant is adequate. We had an early morning flight and really appreciated the 5 AM breakfast that they served in our room at no extra cost. There was a confusion and the driver picked someone else up, but there was a representative from the hotel there to sort things up. Didn't enjoy our room at all. The hotel seems nice enough from the outside (though on a despicable street) and has a door man but we found out he was usually asleep or late to jump from his post to actually perform his job. The room was ok in size though reeked of garbage. The shower only had hot water on occasions and the staff was less than helpful, […] especially in the restaurant. The food was often served on dirty plates and contained a usual hair. The staff was less than excited to be there, daydreaming or watching TV, but hung around towards payment time in hopes of a tip. We used the "tour desk" service to take a ride to the Taj when and were steeply lied to about the cost to take the train on our own. Upon checking out the front desk man claimed we owed unpaid money on their internet --information that is kept in hand written books. We informed him that we paid all of our internet charges up front he didn't believe us and became upset when I asked for the manager, vaguely pointing to a man across the lobby. I had to then ask the front desk to actually summon the manager who came over, who was upset to take the charge off the bill (approx. $2 USD). After claiming to take off the charge he handed us a receipt which still showed the charge. We went round and round again and finally demanded a copy with the charges stating that we didn't owe any $. Stating it nicely--it was a horrible experience and I can't imagine why The Lonely Planet would endorse such a miserable place. Read more

As expected, check-in was farcical. The hotel decided my 8-rooms for 8 nights deserved an 'upgrade' thus were moved to what I regard as the inferior Godwin Deluxe next door. In short, regardless of the 4 weeks notice and confirmed reservation, the hotel again didn't honour this because I believe they had sold rooms to other guests. This said, I selected […] Grand Godwin because the room quality is better, but when Godwin Deluxe didn't have the rooms I wanted, or had rooms that were 'not liked', 5 of my 8 rooms moved back to the Grand Godwin. There hasn't been a stay at a Godwin Hotel when they haven't either met me at the airport as booked and included in the reservation, or have the room booked. Once you get a room, it is happy days. The refurbishment of the hotel is outstanding and the quality for the price for the convenience of location is outstanding, unlike the very strange breakfast. I don't know why the hotel thinks people want tomato pasta or vegetable hot dogs for breakfast, but these are two of the several mysterious offerings you can sleep-in and miss. Complimentary WiFi is great however passes last only 24hours, if the log in works. It would be better if they gave a one-time password and let you be. Up & down to reception several times a day to get an internet pass is frustrating. This is another small inconvenience, but the constant small things here & there that belittle the excellence and comfort of the rooms. Read more

Despite hotel staffs magnificent hospitality and professional behavior I could not ignore one of the very sensitive issues regarding hygiene. In our 3 days stay at this hotel the room service person came to clean the room thoroughly but while cleaning all general rubbish bins and the floor he made our bed with clean new linen and pillow covers with […] his same bare hands without even at least rinsing them. More horrifying is this – with his dame bare hands he cleaned the bathroom and toilet floors and the toilet itself while he provided fresh clean face washer and bath towels without washing his hands. He might not know it from his educational background but it is not his fault at all; it is the hotel’s responsibility to facilitate proper training to do the bed and all top jobs – like table top, dressing table, bedside table top and obviously bed making first with washed clean hands then doing all dirty jobs, then he must wash his hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or use a disposable gloves before providing towels. Near New Delhi Train station, hence great for buses and metro. If you are landing at Ghandi Int. you can take the metro to New Delhi metro station from the airport, cut through the train station and walk to the hotel. Second time in this hotel. Good value. Downside is the amount of street noise. Good breakfast buffet.

This was a good value for money. Good place to stay while travelling to India for other than business purposes. Room was clean and spacious, service was ok. Hot water and A/C available round the clock. Rooftop restaurant offers good food, however it is usually empty. Very poor.! had booked a delux room 1st room offered didn't have wifi. It also didn't match the description on your website - there was no fridge in the room. Was moved to a "super" delux room with a fridge - immediate reaction was a fouls smell in the room , porters told me to open the window and it would be ok! the bathroom floor was constantly wet […] from a leaking tap. I as too tired to argue and having the fan on eased the smell so just went to sleep. Was woken in the morning at 8am with an army of builders banging away knocking down walls - was quite shocked as there had been no warning of this - this went on all day - I finally enquired at 6.30pm and was told "it won't be for much longer now" ! Banging finally stopped at 7.15pm and then the clearing up went on all evening with a trail of builders carting the rubble through the corridors. I understand that refurbishments have to be done but am appaled that there was no warning or explanation for this disruption. On the whole the staff were friendly with fixed smiles but not much help. On arriving at the hotel we were told that the driver had been waiting for us at the airport. I have visited India on at least 15 separate occasions and so I wasn't surprised to hear my travelling […] companion say that she overhead the very same conversation the next day between hotel staff and two French women who also had to make their own way to the hotel. Draw your own conclusions. For people unfamiliar with Delhi it is quite nice to think that they will be picked up for free from the airport. It is an incentive to book a stay at the hotel. The 'deluxe' room didn't even have a window. The hotel management would have been quite happy to leave us in there but we complained. It took at least four hours to find us a room with a window. My advice is for people to get a pre-paid taxi from the Police taxi booth. Go to Paharganj and have a look around for half an hour for accommodation of the same or better quality for half the price. The hotel Grand Godwin is located in the busy area Ram Nagar close to the New Delhi trainstation and the grand bazar. The room was spacious with all the comfort, modern furniture and clean. Two rooms are right beside the reception. The disadvantage was to have no daylight but therefor double protection from the noise on the street.
