The hotel is absolutely amazing, the views are beautiful. I didn't want to leave! I really loved the shower as well. The service in the pub was a bit slow as we had to wait awhile to receive another drink and then to collect our bill. We ordered a late night snack and an hour later we received delicious scones and unfortunately, a bowl of badly burnt popcorn which was inedible.

Staying at the Ballynahinch Castle was like a dream! Our room was very spacious and super comfortable and clean. We paid a little extra for a view of the river and it was well worth it! We walked the castle grounds on some of the marked trails. It was like a fairytale! We had dinner in the pub near a cozy fireplace and felt right at home. Breakfast was amazing with a beautiful display of self-serve options along with anything you wanted off the menu. Service was quick and the staff was very efficient. The newly renovated dining area was done in great taste with furniture and "fixin's" appropriate for the period of a castle. Hats off to the general manager and staff. Oh! And the front desk staff were SO accommodating, even to the point of stepping outside in a drizzle to take a photo of us before leaving! What can I say! We loved it!

The Ballynahinch was to be our top spot to stay while in Ireland. This was a returned visit for us. The personnel were all very attentive to us from our initial greeting to the dining services for breakfast and dinner. Our room was clean but the linens on the bed were less than satisfactory. A followup note by the Hotel Manager indicated a mixup by staff on using linens that were being discarded. When you pay the daily rate for this level hotel, you deserve the highest level of checks and balance by the supervisory staff to make certain the bedding used in each room meets the requirements of the hotel and what the customer is due. Nothing short of this can be excused away by the manager. Where this hotel would have been included in our return visits to Ireland, this last experience would create doubts about returning for a second chance on getting it right!

We are so glad we decided to stay at Ballynahinch Castle. The Castle is very charming and the staff is extremely attentive. The pub was cozy and the food was unbelievable. We stayed for two nights and visited Clifden Castle and Roundstone fishing village. At night we enjoyed the living rooms with their fire places. We have two children and they were very welcomed by the staff and at night we played family board games and chess. Matt was such a gentleman and always stopped by to keep the fire roaring and made sure our kids had cookies and hot chocolate.

In the middle of no where was this outstanding hotel. The dinner was over the top, spectacular. Our room the first night was OK, small in size and a bit of a view. We upgraded to a lux suite the 2nd night and the view of the river was so wonderful we had dinner in our room. The paths throughout the property made this get away place so special!!

An interesting stay in an old classic hotel, clearly an Irish treasure, like an old lady that is a little worn. The setting is fantastic. Two days unless the fish are running is enough as there is little else to do. The downside of the old lady is no elevators, or air conditioning, or screens on the windows to keep the bugs out which means no ventilation or open windows at night. It is a destination resort with an excellent dining room and dining in the bar. I am glad we visited and was a nice break from a city hotel.

This was our one evening that we thought we would have a splurge. We were disappointed in the room. The room was dull and dark. Not much of a luxury accomodation. Considering the rate that we paid. When I complained to reception she said that is the rate for that room. This was the most expensive hotel during our entire stay in Ireland. I would discourage other travellers from staying here.

"Worth every cent!"
07/03/15 ZephyrFox Kelowna, Canada
I must admit to feeling trepidation driving up to Ballynahinch Castle. My husband and I typically stay at budget hotels, and the times we have splurged on 4-5 star properties we have ended up disappointed that the extra dollars were simply not worth it. This was not the case with Ballynahinch! It was worth every cent, especially considering it was only about 2X the price of a B&B. My husband, usually very weary of anything "posh", was entranced with the grounds and natural setting, and the estate's history. It was only a few more euros to upgrade to a superior room which was magnificent. Four-poster king bed with sumptuous linens and a view of the river, with a huge bathroom. Enjoyed a trail walk through the woods, then a wonderful bath in the massive tub with their Voya toiletries, and an evening at the authentic Castle Pub, complete with wood-burning fireplace. The hake fish for dinner was divine and breakfast was delicious. Such an enjoyable restful night; though not sure if it's worth staying more than a night as there is little in the surrounding area to do for a traveler. I guess locals might want to stay longer just to completely unwind.

"Fantastically Beautiful Luxurious Retreat in the Country!"
07/02/15 Casi M New York City, New York
My husband and I just came back from Ireland a week ago. I wasn't sure about staying at Ballynahinch because it hadn't been my first choice (but was more affordable than other castles) and I felt like the pictures from people made it look kind of old and rundown a bit. Boy Was That Wrong! It was Magnificent! We stayed 3 nights, and wished we'd stayed longer, although as there isn't that much in the area (unless you're an avid hiker or willing to take long drives), we think about 4 nights would be the perfect amount. Longer than that, you might get a little bored - or you might just get adventurous and take a long driving trip! Pros: -Our room was divine (only con - up 3 flights of stairs so not for anyone with bad legs!), seriously the nicest room I've ever stayed in and we definitely have stayed at some luxurious places. It was like an entire suite, with a four poster bed, couch and chairs, TV,and lovely views. -Very lux and large bathroom with separate shower and tub (shower had two heads, and seemed made for two people with rain-like shower heads) and a TV! and nice bath products, and a huge mirror and sink, and a walk in closet (huge walk in closet - very lux but we didn't use it once)! -Absolutely incredible breakfast (included!), tea and hot breakfast and huge buffet with amazing food every morning, with a stunning view of the river as you eat! The best part of our day! -even though I mention how pricey the main dining room dinner was, it was lovely to be asked after if we'd like tea in the Hunt's Room (a lovely large sitting room next door with a fire they keep going all the time) and they served us there, tea and cookies, it was lovely -room service was delicious and easy and not v expensive for our first night when we were exhausted -the walks and trails around the castle were beautiful - so full of flowers and trees and green and river and waterfalls and bridges and tunnels and just so beautiful, and not too difficult of hikes -the staff was incredible, I was truly blown away by how attentive they were, how professional, how kind and hospitable, how helpful, and quick to answer any request! It felt like the most luxurious place in the world, with a lovely man coming around to all the public sitting rooms to ask if we wanted anything, and would serve beer, drinks, snacks, etc! Front desk was so upbeat, professional, attentive! -free wifi was great and the service was pretty good, I even was able to Google Video Chat my mom in Colorado so she could see the beautiful hotel and grounds! -seemed great for couples or families, I felt like it was intimate and romantic for my husband and I, but we saw families very happy enjoying games, or the piano, or just a nice hangout around the fire. Cons -not very close to many towns or places to eat or shop -the North West of Ireland is beautiful but very rugged without a lot to see and do -dinner in the main dining room seemed very pricey, if you do the 65E dinner, I recommend splitting it as we did to save, or better yet, the pub is just lovely and romantic, with very similar dinner options for much less! -honestly, it wasn't that castle-like. I was really excited to stay in a full on castle, but it was quite the small "castle," much more like a large manor house like you'd see in England. On the one hand, I was worried it'd be cold and drafty and too large to enjoy and it was instead warm and intimate and cozy; But definitely didn't exactly feel like you are in a castle.

"Truly amazing!!! 8 wonder of the world!"
07/02/15 Kyle - Bec M Gold Coast, Australia
My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights. This definitely wasn't long enough! The staff are very attentive, knowledgeable and willing to do anything for you! This Castle is not just an unreal fishing destination!! The staff make you feel like it's your home! We stayed on the 3rd floor our room was very spacious, beds were comfortable and brand new bathroom by the looks of it! I think we tried just about every item of food on the menu. The food is seriously 5 star! The breakfast is amazing definitely recommend the fresh scones and jam and the cooked ham off the bone! Theres plenty of room throughout the castle. Board games and there's a fire place in every room! Now for the guys interested in the fly fishing! This was definitely the main reason while I wanted to come here!! Our travel agent messed up fishing guide however the staff were quick to fix this and managed to pull some strings last minute getting myself a guide. Can't thank syril enough for organising me Frank as my guide!! Frank was a 3rd generation guide here and seriously new his stuff on fly fishing with 55 years of experience I would call him an expert! The fishing here was nothing I've ever experienced before. Frank landed a 9.5lb salmon the first day and lost another monster the next day. We also caught multiple trout. I can't thank Frank enough for all the time he spent with me showing me the ropes!! I will definitely be back! Highly recommend to everyone. The grounds are picturesque with plenty of artists around the grounds painting. This place has something special for everyone!

"Refurb very welcome"
07/01/15 LarKir Dublin, Ireland
Ballynahinch Castle has been around for many years and has always been in a beautiful location and setting. Whilst its dining room and reception rooms were always nice and the Bar must be one of the best Hotel Bars anywhere in the World, the rooms always struck me as dated and in need of renovation to bring the Hotel up to the standards it aspires to. I don't know whether the refurbishment is finished but we were certainly put in one of their most recently upgraded rooms and it was lovely. They were also in the course of adding new rooms to the end of the wing we stayed in. Service in the dining room as a little hit and miss but not through a lack of friendliness, perhaps just rustiness as the Hotel had just re-opened after a winter break when we stayed but the food was first class.

Beautiful grounds, wonderful rooms and suites, great dinner - our family party of 12, including six 7 to 17 ate in the pub which was less formal than the dining room, but the food was from the same kitchen and delicious. Took two long walks, entirely on the grounds - lake and stream, 30' tall wild rhododendrons - spectacular. We've stayed at the Jekyll Island Club, the Frontenac and Waterford Castle, and Ballynahinch is at the top of my list.

"Good food, great atmosphere, staff needs training"

We visited the pub on last Saturday . great food. lovely atmosphere. great music. we loved it all just a small complaint as i was waiting at the bar counter to order a drink and the staff was using his cell phone and was not interested in serving. Like i had to get his attention. Its not right for such a prestigious hotel. Staff should be trained not to use there cell phone while working atleast. overall we loved it and will be back. thanks

"Brilliant Renovations - FOOD improvements must surely be next?"
06/26/15 Gooner10_8 Dublin, Ireland
This has long been an attractive destination : in the heart of Ireland's most attractive west-coast scenery, a characterful building, and with many long-serving staff who offer far more than a plastic "Cead Mile Failte". So, we were back again. As ever, we were impressed by the genuinely warm welcome - "Ballynahinch" is indeed fortunate to have such a great team of Reception Staff, as Freddie, Jane & Kathleen are all wonderful. It's a cliche, we know, but they really DO go that extra mile in handling enquiries / requests from guests! The renovations? Well, they've added a number of new Rooms, apparently to a very high standard. More, they've also "re-modelled" the Bathrooms of a number of other Rooms - including the one allocated to us. On top of that, they've very tastefully re-structured the area around the always charming "Pub" area - there's a new "Ranji" room at the back & the new "Gents' Toilet" is positively palatial when contrasted with the "Brass Monkeys" hell that preceded it (just don't try to get there after the main Bar closes, as there are no "auto-lights" in the "Ranji Room"!) And, of course, we must absolutely commend the re-decoration of the Restaurant/Dining-Room area - very tasteful decor! So, all of that said, why are we quite frustrated after our most recent repeat visit to "Ballynahinch"? The answer lies in, what for us, was an extremely poor "Food Performance" on the part of the Hotel. This was not just an issue at dinner-time, but, worse, at a time which doesn't require fantastic culinary skills, also at breakfast-time! Let's be more specific. The "Set-Dinner" Menu (Euro 65) offers interesting choices. Our experience was extremely "mixed" : for example, we got overcooked meat and fish + (severely) undercooked vegetables (as well as soggy potatoes which should have been "crispy"). At Breakfast - hardly the most demanding area for the most amateur of "Chefs" - we had to suffer dreadful overcooked "Eggs Benedict", and an absolutely cold Poached Egg with a warm piece of Liver (I simply declined to order ANY cooked item on the second morning as a result of this off-putting experience!) So, over to you at "Ballynahinch" : you've done a great job with the physical renovation/extension. So how about doing something about what's actually delivered in the Restaurant/Dining-Room? (You do surely know that listing something on a Menu is far from delivering anything like that?) We hope to return to this wonderful location - we're optimists, so we really do believe they will do something about the FOOD area. In the meantime, our thanks to the staff who looked after us - 'hopefully, the "new regime" will not eliminate all of the people who have, for so many years, created and maintained the character of this place. Focal scoir : Mile buiochas do Brid - togha mna!

"Wonderful castle with lovely grounds"

Our family of four only stayed one night, but we were treated with the same care and attention as guests staying for one week. The staff was friendly and helpful, they even arranged for a horse ride on the beach last minute for my daughter and I at a nearby riding center. Our rooms overlooked the river and were well appointed and had (from our experience) the nicest beds in Ireland. From our window we watched a heron catching his dinner and even saw fish jumping out of the water. While my husband and son spent time in the pub, us girls wondered the grounds for hours. There are several walking paths that provide views of the mountains, river and lake. These paths are well cleared and easy to navigate. The beautiful and peaceful grounds at Ballynahinch far exceed the nearby, more renowned Ashford Castle - nature lovers will not be disappointed. We had a delightful dinner in the formal dining room the evening of our stay and enjoyed a generous breakfast the next morning.

"Memorable stay"

We spent two nights there recently. Our room was recently refurbished, decorated tastefully -with comfort and charm. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. Breakfasts and dinners were excellent. Unfortunately, the weather was not the best - low hanging clouds, obscuring the mountains and vistas. However, we spent a morning on a walking tour with Noel Joyce. That was the highlight of our stay. He was both knowledgeable and humorous- an engaging conversationalist! He so enhanced our understanding of the Connemara.
