This hotel is older building completely refurbished lacking an elevator so stair climbing is necessary. The room we were in was smallish but clean.Staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was very good. This hotel is very close to Holyrood & the Royal Mile. Metered parking is available on the street outside the hotel . "Good on a budget"
It is a walk from a bus stop, even further to the old town, but Calton Hilll is your backyard. The room was in the basement with a good window, clean, but had kind of a damp smell, probably just needed afresh coat of paint. The breakfast was fantastic and the staff very helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great location, very helpful staff, wonderful hot breakfast included and a very convenient location to Princes Street. The staff went above and beyond to help us. We stayed there for 4 nights and they called and reserved taxis for us and when we needed to leave early for a tour they had a continental breakfast ready for us.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, wonderful house"
Easy parking, great location and breakfast, nice staffGenuine Expedia guest review
Staff is awesome, breakfast is great. Short walk to city centre.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Room below ground level"
Room was definitely cheap, very close to sea shore and not very far from train station either. Breakfast was really good. Only thing I didn't like that my room was under the ground level so no outside view but worth the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great walking distance location to the Royal mile."
Our double room was on the 5th/last floor without an elevator, no help with the luggage; the shower was not functioning correctly - no stability in the temperature and water pressure was very low.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very pleasant place to stay, friendly, accommodating staff. Good breakfast. Clean and quiet. Be prepared for lots of stairs... no lift.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Ailsa Craig is a lovely small hotel and I enjoyed my recent stay very much. My room (a double ensuite, downstairs) had a recently renovated bathroom with shower that was very nice. The linens/bedspread are worn and older. I was traveling alone and found the room very cozy for one...if two are sharing you should be very close friends. The double […] bed nearly fills the room on one side, there is a small desk that has a flat screen tv and a hot pot for coffee and a hair dryer. The hotel does not have a lift/elevator. There are a few stairs as you enter the building and then fairly steep stairs either up or down to the rooms. Breakfast is served on the main floor and includes a made to order Scottish breakfast and cereal selections. The staff members were all very gracious. If you are arriving at Waverly station and have luggage, I would recommend a taxi up to the hotel. It is a hike and mostly up hill. I think the cab fare was about 6.50. The hotel is on a lovely street adjacent to several other smaller hotels and overlooking Regents Park. Around the corner are several embassy offices. Traveling alone, I found the area safe for walking. Most of the city sightseeing can be done within a 10-20 min walk and there are nearby cafes and restaurants within about a 5 min walk. I found the hotel well-situated for my visit and would stay again if my travels took me there. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The staff was hard working and friendly. Too much noise came from the room door and the exterior window. Sound proofing needs to be added to make the room more comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good location, very average hotel."
Hotel is basic. Rooms are dark and dingy and uninviting. Staff responses pleasant but again just doing their job. Met the requirements of a 3 star but just. Room was musty. Breakfast just average but when compared to other Scottish hotels we stayed at below average. Location good for walking to city. Car parking is hourly on street and must be paid […] via machine. There are 5 hotels on this street within 100 yards o f each other. Over last 2 years I have stayed in 3 of the others and would rate this hotel at the bottom of the list of the ones I have stayed in. Other than the room being on the top floor (70 steps), it was a great room. The staff were wonderful. One of them even brought our luggage up all of those steps for us. Made toast for us a 4 am when we had to fly out early in the morning. Staff was very helpful the best way to get around the city. They offered suggestions of what to do. Lots of options […] as we were there during the Tattoo, the Fringe Festival, the International Festival and a few more festivals as well. Had a great stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Impressive building, staff friendly and approachable, room was a little tired décor wise but it was clean and the bedding linen was spotless. Ensuite bathroom was modern and equally spotless. Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice. Location is fab, right next to Calton Hill at the bottom of the street, Superb views. Overall, very happy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Top Floor & No Lift"
It's 2014 come on guys instal a lift .. Your in a great location don't let that be an excuse for not installing one .. Also a 10:30 check-out seems a bit silly when most hotels are midday .Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Room needs decorating, sheets clean but pillows need replacing. Bathroom was good and must have been refurbished recently. Breakfast was good and the staff helpful. Location was suitable for us close to car hire company, 10 minute walk from train station and walking distance for attractions.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great hotel in city centre"
We loved this hotel. It had an old, heritage feel about it. And it's close to the city centre and central station. The 2 staff members we met were very friendly and helpful, giving us tips about Edinburgh and surrounding areas. The breakfast was one of the best we've had in a long time. We would definitely stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel that needs improving"
Family room has too many stairs to be reached. Breakfast time too short.Genuine Expedia guest review
3 flights of stairs was a challenge with a full suitcase however view from room made the climb worth it. Lovely hotel, nicely maintained retaining heritage character. Breakfast was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Scenic location, tucked just off a main road."
Large room with a modern en suite. Great breakfast in pleasant surroundings included. An easy walk to all the main sites and attractions, as well as the train station.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Had a fab time"
Decor is a bit dated but that aside we loved our stay. We had a room on the top floor, bit of a climb but was grand with a great view. Brilliant location for exploring the City.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel, great breakfast"
It was a little smaller than I expected and the room was in the basement but it was nice and cozy and within walking distance of the sights and they served a nice breakfast every morning.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small friendly hotel. Close to centre."
Stayed for 2 nights. Staff were superb. Friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much bother for them My single room was great. Very small but fully appointed with views of garden. Clean. Newly decorated bathroom. Would stay here again without doubt.Genuine Expedia guest review
"friendly staff. 15 minute walk from station."
We stored our luggage at the reception in the morning, and the staff helped us carry it to our room so when we checked-in in the afternoon, the luggage was already in the room. Quite happy about their consideration. The triple room was spacious. One of the four bed lamps was off, but not a big deal. There were some small stains on my blanket. The breakfast […] was quite basic. The hotel was further from the station than I expected, about 15 to 20 minutes of walk. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice area but...."
This hotel is in a good area, but is looking rather shabby in places. The bathroom was new and spotless, but down the corridor from my (single) room. I wasn't made aware of this when booking. The bed linen comprising white sheets, a rather nasty brown blanket and an old bedspread need to be replaced with duvets. The bed was very hard. The breakfast […] choices were very basic. "Basic hotel close to city but is frayed around the"
Room was basic, clean until Imsaw the stain on the blanket. It was within walking distance to,the city, car parking was on the street, breakfast was ok. We were in basement so a few water boiler noises came through. Would I stay here again? Well, allowing for, other choices , it is average value.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Simple hotel within easy reach of Centre"
We had a four night stay here, specifically booked as my husband was running the Edinburgh Marathon. For the marathon it was perfect, literally yards from the start! It was about a 15-20 minute walk to the centre of town, a little bit further the castle, which was fine for us, but there was also a lot of places to eat and pubs on route if you wanted […] to be somewhere closer. The hotel was also close to the Dynamic Earth attraction and to Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park, a lovely area where you could walk either around the bottom on the flat, or to the top of the seat, a very steep climb! The hotel for us overall was well placed, in a relatively quiet area. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"An average hotel in a relatively good location."
I stayed one night in a single room. In summary, the staff are the best feature and the value for money is the worst. The staff were welcoming and the building is magnificent. However, for £65 for a single room, I did expect something slightly larger than the box room in a suburban semi. Despite other reviews, the shower was good (it just needs a bit […] of patience and perseverance with the controls). The breakfast was average and seemed to be designed by an Excel calculation on how many ml's of beans should be served to keep costs optimal. All in all, the place could be a lot worse but if they're aiming to make an impact, they need to make guests feel a little less like a source of revenue. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Return to Edinburgh"
Great location in a lovely quiet cobbled road Big family room Nicely decorated but rooms needed some pictures and doonas instead of blankets and bed spreads Lovely that you could open the windows and looked out onto nice backyard Huge breakfast Hotel lacks atmosphere Needs a cosy lounge area where you can sit and have a drink Reception is in the dining […] area which seems odd and doors closed off Empty flower boxes out the front should have been filled with lovely spring flowers like the other hotels It has so much potential this hotel Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Can't fault it"
It might not be what you'd class as a 5 star hotel but I can't give any less than 5 stars for any section of the review, I couldn't fault the place. The style might be slightly dated but the staff were nice, the rooms were clean and thanks to blackout curtains and a quiet street, I had the best night's sleep I've had in a long time. My only disappointment […] was that I had to be up and away before they were serving breakfast - that was my fault, not theirs though. Would I stay there again? Yes. I do not often return to a hotel twice but four or five years on from my last stay I returned to the Ailsa Craig. "Basic room, basic breakfast.."
Hotel is very basic and i mean exactly this - basic. clean and just behind of Calton Hill so very close to the city center, cheap.. but you get what you pay for - great place if you don't mind small room and below average breakfast otherwise look somewhere else.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel in great location"
Very friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. Great location for both old and new town. Would stay again.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was unreliable, just can't get proper service from the staffs. Parking wasn't free but inconvenient; no wifi in room. Everything not according to advertised were blamed on hotels.com, guests were left in limbo n subjected to their dictation. Never to stay there n hope hotels.com could highlight this to travellers.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I really enjoyed the service and breakfast here and thought the hotel was more than adequate for somewhere to sleep, the only niggle I have is that the room wasn't as nice as it could have been if not just given a little maintenance. There was black mould on the bathroom ceiling, dirty wallpaper and it was pealing off the walls in places in the main […] room, small things really hence 4 stars :) I would stay again for the price, and hopefully maybe stay in a better looked after room x)) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Lovely hotel in a great location would stay again"
I booked this hotel for my Dad's 70th Birthday. I'd never been to Edinburgh before and so didn't really have any idea of the area. When we got there we where only a 5 minute walk from the theatre area and a lot of good places (variety) to eat. We were 5 minutes from Holyrood Palace and a 20 minute walk from the main area of the Royal mile/Castle. The […] hotel staff where friendly, polite and helpful. The hotel had a 24 hour bar (reasonable priced too), this pleased my Dad, as he could have a whisky before going to bed. The only issue I can see is parking. it's free over the weekend, but pay and display during the week. You can't park directly outside the hotel as it's for permit holders only. I would definitely go back again. Great hotel!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
