This hotel is older building completely refurbished lacking an elevator so stair climbing is necessary. The room we were in was smallish but clean.Staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was very good. This hotel is very close to Holyrood & the Royal Mile. Metered parking is available on the street outside the hotel . "Great location, wonderful house"
Easy parking, great location and breakfast, nice staffGenuine Expedia guest review
Staff is awesome, breakfast is great. Short walk to city centre.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Room below ground level"
Room was definitely cheap, very close to sea shore and not very far from train station either. Breakfast was really good. Only thing I didn't like that my room was under the ground level so no outside view but worth the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great walking distance location to the Royal mile."
Our double room was on the 5th/last floor without an elevator, no help with the luggage; the shower was not functioning correctly - no stability in the temperature and water pressure was very low.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very pleasant place to stay, friendly, accommodating staff. Good breakfast. Clean and quiet. Be prepared for lots of stairs... no lift.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Ailsa Craig is a lovely small hotel and I enjoyed my recent stay very much. My room (a double ensuite, downstairs) had a recently renovated bathroom with shower that was very nice. The linens/bedspread are worn and older. I was traveling alone and found the room very cozy for one...if two are sharing you should be very close friends. The double […] bed nearly fills the room on one side, there is a small desk that has a flat screen tv and a hot pot for coffee and a hair dryer. The hotel does not have a lift/elevator. There are a few stairs as you enter the building and then fairly steep stairs either up or down to the rooms. Breakfast is served on the main floor and includes a made to order Scottish breakfast and cereal selections. The staff members were all very gracious. If you are arriving at Waverly station and have luggage, I would recommend a taxi up to the hotel. It is a hike and mostly up hill. I think the cab fare was about 6.50. The hotel is on a lovely street adjacent to several other smaller hotels and overlooking Regents Park. Around the corner are several embassy offices. Traveling alone, I found the area safe for walking. Most of the city sightseeing can be done within a 10-20 min walk and there are nearby cafes and restaurants within about a 5 min walk. I found the hotel well-situated for my visit and would stay again if my travels took me there. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The staff was hard working and friendly. Too much noise came from the room door and the exterior window. Sound proofing needs to be added to make the room more comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Top Floor & No Lift"
It's 2014 come on guys instal a lift .. Your in a great location don't let that be an excuse for not installing one .. Also a 10:30 check-out seems a bit silly when most hotels are midday .Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Room needs decorating, sheets clean but pillows need replacing. Bathroom was good and must have been refurbished recently. Breakfast was good and the staff helpful. Location was suitable for us close to car hire company, 10 minute walk from train station and walking distance for attractions.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
3 flights of stairs was a challenge with a full suitcase however view from room made the climb worth it. Lovely hotel, nicely maintained retaining heritage character. Breakfast was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Had a fab time"
Decor is a bit dated but that aside we loved our stay. We had a room on the top floor, bit of a climb but was grand with a great view. Brilliant location for exploring the City.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel, great breakfast"
It was a little smaller than I expected and the room was in the basement but it was nice and cozy and within walking distance of the sights and they served a nice breakfast every morning.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"An average hotel in a relatively good location."
I stayed one night in a single room. In summary, the staff are the best feature and the value for money is the worst. The staff were welcoming and the building is magnificent. However, for £65 for a single room, I did expect something slightly larger than the box room in a suburban semi. Despite other reviews, the shower was good (it just needs a bit […] of patience and perseverance with the controls). The breakfast was average and seemed to be designed by an Excel calculation on how many ml's of beans should be served to keep costs optimal. All in all, the place could be a lot worse but if they're aiming to make an impact, they need to make guests feel a little less like a source of revenue. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Convenient location, great staff"
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Location was excellent, just behind Calton Hill. Only downside was that there was no lift and our luggage was on the top floor but wasn't a big deal to us.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Return to Edinburgh"
Great location in a lovely quiet cobbled road Big family room Nicely decorated but rooms needed some pictures and doonas instead of blankets and bed spreads Lovely that you could open the windows and looked out onto nice backyard Huge breakfast Hotel lacks atmosphere Needs a cosy lounge area where you can sit and have a drink Reception is in the dining […] area which seems odd and doors closed off Empty flower boxes out the front should have been filled with lovely spring flowers like the other hotels It has so much potential this hotel Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Can't fault it"
It might not be what you'd class as a 5 star hotel but I can't give any less than 5 stars for any section of the review, I couldn't fault the place. The style might be slightly dated but the staff were nice, the rooms were clean and thanks to blackout curtains and a quiet street, I had the best night's sleep I've had in a long time. My only disappointment […] was that I had to be up and away before they were serving breakfast - that was my fault, not theirs though. Would I stay there again? Yes. "Pleasant friendly hotel."
I do not often return to a hotel twice but four or five years on from my last stay I returned to the Ailsa Craig. My memories of a pleasant and friendly hotel were reinforced and I had a good night's stay. Staff are friendly and very polite and it was great to have a decent sized bedroom with large bath. "God value in the city centre."
Room was in basement and while basic, everything worked. Shower-room looked like it had been re-done recently and was very good.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Basic room, basic breakfast.."
Hotel is very basic and i mean exactly this - basic. clean and just behind of Calton Hill so very close to the city center, cheap.. but you get what you pay for - great place if you don't mind small room and below average breakfast otherwise look somewhere else.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel in great location"
Very friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. Great location for both old and new town. Would stay again.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was unreliable, just can't get proper service from the staffs. Parking wasn't free but inconvenient; no wifi in room. Everything not according to advertised were blamed on hotels.com, guests were left in limbo n subjected to their dictation. Never to stay there n hope hotels.com could highlight this to travellers.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I really enjoyed the service and breakfast here and thought the hotel was more than adequate for somewhere to sleep, the only niggle I have is that the room wasn't as nice as it could have been if not just given a little maintenance. There was black mould on the bathroom ceiling, dirty wallpaper and it was pealing off the walls in places in the main […] room, small things really hence 4 stars :) I would stay again for the price, and hopefully maybe stay in a better looked after room x)) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Lovely hotel in a great location would stay again"
I booked this hotel for my Dad's 70th Birthday. I'd never been to Edinburgh before and so didn't really have any idea of the area. When we got there we where only a 5 minute walk from the theatre area and a lot of good places (variety) to eat. We were 5 minutes from Holyrood Palace and a 20 minute walk from the main area of the Royal mile/Castle. The […] hotel staff where friendly, polite and helpful. The hotel had a 24 hour bar (reasonable priced too), this pleased my Dad, as he could have a whisky before going to bed. The only issue I can see is parking. it's free over the weekend, but pay and display during the week. You can't park directly outside the hotel as it's for permit holders only. I would definitely go back again. Great hotel!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

we booked a family room as they looked good. we were given room one in the basement which had a musty damp smell with 3 beds, one which was not fit to sleep in ,all beds had blankets not quilts, throws were stained, carpets dirty, lights did not work and curtain was covered in dampness, the only good point was breakfast so I would not recommend this hot […] el Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Good location for my business meetings, unlikely to return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Not too far from railway station (waverley) and on cobbled road with well preserved terraces converted to hotels all overlooking a park, the setting is attractive and the hotel well maintained. The room was spacious with hugely high ceilings and a great, green aspect overlooking eastern Edinburgh. Breakfast was included and this was fairly efficiently […] operated apart from a few hiccups with the order. The bathroom exhaust fan was quite noisy and ran in automatic mode for some time after the lights had been extinguished. Staff friendly and relaxed made this a nice place to stay. Friendly and helpful staff. Great location. Spacious accommodation. Getting ready to plan our next trip.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We were very happy with our stay, the breakfast was good and staff friendly. It was a bit far from the city (some serious hills) but it was good value for money. "Stay at Ailsa Craig Hotel Edinburgh"
Hotel was in a great location for my stay 2 mins from Playhouse Theatre and shopping centre. Staff were very nice and the hotel was very clean . Have recommended to lots of friends ideal for theatre trips. Will definitely use this hotel again .Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great value, good location"
Hotel was good value and good location - it's about a 10 min walk to the centre, with a couple of good restaurants and bars on the way (I'd recommend the restaurant Phuket Pavilion - Thai). We booked this as a cheap but nice hotel and were happy. We were given a large room on the tom floor which was a lot of stairs but fine by us. It was a little chilly […] but there were two electric heaters which were great. The shower lacked power at peak time and the hairdryer kept overheating. Breakfast portions were a little small. The staff were really friendly. Overall good value. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location older hotel"
The hotel provides excellent service. A nice breakfast to-order is served, which is commendable for a fairly small hotel with a small staff. The rooms are older & in need of updating, but the garden is beautiful & the common areas are attractive & well-maintained. The bathroom for my room was fully updated & very nice. Two rooms in the hotel have private […] bathrooms which are NOT ATTACHED (not en suite) with the room. If that is a problem for you, check to be sure that the room you are reserving is not one of those two. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
