Arrived late Sunday, booked in fairly quickly (staff member tending to someone who wanted something from the bar). Room was good, large shower, comfy bed (tho pillows not as comfy), plenty of choice on TV. Breakfast was decent, not the best quality cooked items and they have one of those annoying conveyor belt toasters that either does nothing or burns […] your bread. There were just enough people staying to make breakfast enjoyable and not the scrum it can become in HI Expresses. If items ran out they could be readily replaced if staff were asked. Overall we had a very pleasant stay. Unfortunately though, the sofa bed our daughters slept in was not comfortable at all, with the springs almost sticking out of the mattress. Also, we had hoped to have more options for kids in your restaurant, especially as there are no other places to eat or purchase food nearby apart from the garage next door.

Overall my 3 night stay was great. The bathroom could have done with a little more attention (toothpaste on the outside of the sink). I LOVE the huge shower. My only criticism is the lack of bacon on the breakfast menu, sausages scrambled egg and beans is great for some people but just didn't cut it without bacon for me.

I think I will never ever stay there again, nor recommend anyone else stays there either. Not a single smile nor pleasantry from a single member of staff, a 35 minute wait for missing bath towels, which when arrived had holes in them or where badly stained. Then 'one' foot long rail to hang them from when wet. A bed that moved with every intake of breath. […] Walls and windows so thin you could hear everyone else's conversations. The hotel was clean and staff were very friendly and helpful. Sofa bed in room was unfortunately very uncomfortable though. Also, no reception on mobiles at all...and wifi comes at a cost. Breakfast was lovely and served at a good time.

Stayed 2 nights, Fri and Sat, as attending a wedding nearby. Found hotel to be just what we wanted. Comfortable and clean. Buffet breakfast was very good and even though the hotel was very busy the staff did thier best to keep breakfast area/tables clean and tidy and to replenish food, crockery etc. Any waiting was kept to a minimum.

The staff definitely need more training in customer services !!! -I was almost charged again on check in -the room was paid when the booking was made weeks ago -a complete fiasco when I asked to use the safety deposit box- it took over 20 minutes to get that sorted out! -inside the hotel rooms, there is a notice offering on request toothpaste,toothbrushes […] ,facecloths etc but when I asked for a facecloth on 2 occassions I was offered a sewing kit or a hand towel - as you can imagine I gave up asking. -there was no notice or listings of hotel facilities in the room let alone a hotel card- eg; trying to use the phone to make an outside call you need to have credit card approval first!! The excuses I kept getting from management about the lack of service/information was that "the hotel is new"......well in that case , the staff really need to smarten up their act .Thank goodness the staff at Holiday Inn Express at Gatwick were very professional otherwise we would have missed our flight if they were anything like those at Colchester!! Hotel receptionist not very helpful with directions, didn't seem to know the area or the road names very well. A clean modern hotel, far superior to the Travelodges we've stayed. Good value too as we were able to book just the one room for myself, wife and our 18-year-old son. The room was very small, clothes could be hung up but we had to use the spare sofabed as a storage space for jumpers etc. The bed was much too bouncy and small for us. In fact, my husband nearly fell out it was so small. Didn't really appreciate having to pay for the internet, £7.99 seemed a but steep. The shower was great and had lots of space which […] we like. The room was almost as far as you could walk but it was quiet that end and the receptionist had changed the room for us so that we weren't near the front door, where it could have been noisy. The breakfast was awful and if we stay again, we would go elsewhere. It was hard to find, we spent a lot of time going up and down the A12! We had a very pleasant stay at the Holiday Inn Express at Dedham, Colchester. I would suggest though that a sign for the hotel is placed at the roundabout as it is hidden from view by trees and the lie of the land. I woud certainly recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Built 2011, with a mix of modern and 1950s decor, it's quite comfortable and very practical. A petrol station across the car park provides a handy 24 h convenience shop. Friendly and helpful staff, some minor organisational niggles with bed making and providing enough milk or napkins at breakfast.

The hotel, and the room, was clean, modern and attractive. The room facilities were excellent, and the inclusive breakfast, while limited, was more than adequate. The hotel can only be accessed from the A12 driving towards Colchester and is tucked away behind a Shell garage. Poor signage to find it. Otherwise strongly recommended.

It's easy to miss this hotel, from the main road the A12 turn off, it's literally behind the shell garage. Once you do find it, it's welcoming the reception staff were great. However on this visit being a nearly new hotel, we found there was no information in the hotel room, what the opening times of the dining room was, what the menu was etc, not even […] a number to call reception. There was no toilet brush, which every bathroom should have, three of us were booked in but tea/coffee etc was only enough for two, even the milk was only one little pot each. Breakfast there was no bread it had run out before 9.30, A male was walking round suspiciously wearing a leather jacket, then began clearing tables, he should have been wearing his uniform, he was not identifiable as staff. The nearest place Dedham was not assessible by foot, because there are no footpaths or street lighting, the staff called a cab, but they were charging £16 one way for a journey no more than 2 miles. A local taxi driver was called but we had to wait over an hour for him, his name was Scott, he arranged to pick us up to at a convenient time and his fare was £6 each way. he turned up on time and was a very nice man.
