Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa - York

The Cedar Court was opened 3 years ago in an old, beautiful train building that is a 6 minute walk to the train station (with luggage) and 10 minutes to the Minster. The guest and public rooms are all new and luxurious but they kept the gorgeous building details so that it's the best of old and new. The guest rooms are large with the right amenities […] (WiFi, safe, slippers, great bed, mini bar), fabulous bathroom, very quiet, and turn-down service. The continental breakfast was the best we had on our 16-day UK trip with smoked fish and beautiful fruit and pastries. But the most winning was the staff. Particularly high marks to concierge Graham who arranged a car and superb guide to take us through the moors and Whitby, and also coached us how to see York when all we had was a day. THis hotel is an historic monument. They have done a very good job combining modern comforts such as an amazing marble bathroom and very comfortable beds while keeping the nostaligic feel of the building. But a couple of things were disappointing. First the windows are not insulated and there was literally a freezing breeze blowing in through them making […] the room very hard to keep warm. We had the theromstat on 27. Second there were brownie type cookies that were withthe free tea and coffee that were clearly so stale that I almost gagged and had to spit it out. Please ensure treats are fresh. Thirdly, there were charges on the bill from the bar, we never went in to the bar, with receipts clearly signed by someone else, then having made the correction the front desk person gave me someone elses bill when I checked out. In addition, there was road works and cordoned off construction surrounding the entire building , not their fault, but made it very unattractive on arrival and difficult to navigate with a 90 year old elderly person. But hey, the place is an experience just don't stay in the winter until they put in double glazing. Read more

It was a great hotel except that it was noisy due to construction taking place starting early in the morning. The windows did not totally block out the noise of machinery. However, everything else was 5 star and great, including the spa and pool. The staff was very attentive.

Enjoyed from the very first minute to the very last. Will be a perfect 100% once the building works to the new council building just opposite the hotel are completed. They didn't cause us any problems as the works were closed down due to the Jubillee w/e but might do if you currently stayed there during a normal working week.

I stayed overnight while visiting York - as delightful a medieval city as can be found. The hotel is new and is in the former offices of a major railroad. This hotel is striving to be top-class, and it delivers in many ways, but staff training needs to be improved if they want to hit the heights. The staff was friendly, but to a point. There was a little distance here that one doesn't feel in, say, a Ritz Carlton or a Four Seasons hotel. The chef didn't comply, though. And finally I should point out that the Hotel states that UK citizens must pay Value Added Tax (VAT), implying that others don't have to pay said tax. Not true, Nobody at the hotel understood what I was talking about, though they gave me a detailed bill that they said I could turn in at the airport for a refund. We stayed over the "Royal Wedding" weekend and on arrival at 11.10am our room was not ready. We asked where we could watch the wedding and were told there are no TV's in the common parts!! Lovely hotel but weekend spoilt by being charged a hefty sum for carpet cleaning due to complimentary drink fizzing out of bottle when we opened it. Have come away very deflated and staff attitudes towards us changed instantly from the friendly smiles we received on arrival. Unfortunately when one stops at a 5 star hotel, one expects perfection - the Cedar Court Grand is very good but perhaps not quite as good as might be expected. Two main criticisms: Our booking included breakfast, but we found that we had to pay an extra £5 each for a cooked breakfast - rather pathetic when compared to the room price. Checkout is 11.am […] - again pretty poor, when 12 noon is virtually standard across the industry. Checkout can be extended - for £10 an hour! This, when guests have paid approaching £200 a night for a room. These extra charges seem to demonstrate the sort of attitude which is common in 'ordinary' hotels when room prices are very cheap and the hotel has to make money somehow. Anyway lets look at the good things - staff wonderful without exception, and the rooms are top class [although if you are at the back you will have a very grim outlook]. The breakfast although the extra £5 is a cheek, is really good, and the staff perfect. Overall a Four and a Half star hotel I think. Read more

With it's central location this beautiful hotel promises much but was a big let down when it came to two fairly fundamental points. Our suite was so cold we had to request a fan heater from reception which proved to be noisy, killed the ambience of the suite and did not seem in keeping with a hotel of this standard. The quality of the room service was […] extremely poor....my partner's overcooked tough tuna steak was well below expectation and my cup of coffee was cold and was one third full by the time it reached our suite due to spillage. The staff are very friendly but we did make complaint about the standard of our room service and received no follow up apology from anyone. I would have expected and have received better standards from hotels of this rating, money would be better spent elsewhere as faulty details like these remove the magic from this hotel experience. Not quite as special as I'd have liked for my partners birthday treat but to be fair, was as described and had lovely bathroom, with separate WC. The big disappointment was the late cleaning of our room. We arrived back at after 4pm each day to find our room had not been cleaned ! When we complained we were told that their commitment to 3pm check-in meant they had to clean check-out roomsw first. On the day we arrived we could not get into our room untill 4.20 pm !

If you can afford to stay here do it. Our room was beautiful and so comfortable. The bathroom was huge and had heated floors. We tried to the pool and had a great swim. It's a heated pool dimly lit with Greek statues. Everything was amazing at this hotel. Oh and there's a whiskey lounge.

Excellent two night stay at the Cedar Court Grand in February 2013. We had an upgraded room which was very comfotable. We didn't use the pool but family members did and enjoyed it every day. We did however enjoy cocktails in the bar both nights which were fab - we recommend a black russian!

Excellent hotel, staff went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The pool and spa is beautiful. Hotel is within walking distance to all the amenities York has to offer. Would not want to stay any where else if visiting York again. The only criticism is that breakfast is a too expensive for what it is!
