Protea Hotel Fire and Ice Melrose Arch - Johannesburg

Great hotel / great location / great service. Style is contemporary [more ultra-contemporary] which may not appeal to all [was not a problem for me]. Pricing was very affordable and in sum, I felt I got good value for my $$. I will definitely stay here on my next trip to Jo'burg.

overall the hotel has a 5* service, unfortunately the only down side was the checking in. it took us 20m to check in because the printer was not working and the room keys couldn't be activated. we book 2 rooms. besides that, a great hotel, definitely will go back.

The hotel is located in Melrose Arch, which is a newly constructed shopping area, with many stores and restaurants within easy walking distance. Melrose Arch is a great and extremely safe area, and you can pretty much walk to everything from the hotel. We loved the modern decor of the hotel and room. There is free wireless access throughout the hotel and free computers to use near the bar. The bar was very busy one night with a great crowd and music. The milkshakes at the restaurant are actually […] famous locally and to die for. My only minor complaint would be the shower being separated from the bedroom by only a curtain. This was fine for my wife and I but might be a little weird if you were staying with a friend or family. Hotel was very clean and comfortable. Service was polite and professional. The staff were always smiling and looked after us very well. Only downside was the internet. 150mb per day is not enough for a business trip so you end up paying for more. Sometimes worked, sometimes didn't - not overly reliable.

Management seem to have no interest in managing the hotel. Reception area very noisy when I arrived, and receptionists do not watch the line of checking in guests carefully. This is after one has actually found the hotel! The air conditioning in my room was broken, and fixed on 29 degrees, so more fire than ice! I was moved to another room on asking […] for it to be fixed. No apology, or concern for inconvenience of packing again, or restarting work I was doing on computer. In morning, cleaner first blocked the corridor with her cart and disappeared. Then removed all bed clothes and towels while I was at breakfast, before I had checked out. The hotel itself is modern and very smartly done. Deserving of a 4 star. However, the service from the hotel staff was exceptionally poor. Some of the staff at the front desk seemed like they needed a Red Bull to come alive. Our room service took over an hour the one night. The reception failed to tell me that the parking lot entrance was a block down and I drove around like a fool looking for it. Due to it being during the Christmas and New Year period the hotel seemed short staffed (Jhb is normallly quiet during this time), but its not fair to guests like me to be short-changed. There was clearly a lack of Management (actually no sign of a General Manager). When I was calling the hotel to change my bookings etc, the lack of staff and management stood out like a soar thumb! Gautrain from the airport to Rosebank, from Rosebank a gautrain bus drops you in front of the hotel. Service was very good, except quite a big mistake on my Bill at check out. They did ask me to check the bill before payment and therefore I picked it up quickly. Would have liked a bath in the room, but otherwise very comfortable.

Trevliga och nyrenoverade rum Schysst lounge och hotellbar/restaurang. Var bra feststämning i baren under den lördagskväll jag bodde där. Yngre klientel på hotellet. Märktes på hotellets gäster att det låg i ett finare/"rikare" område.
