We enjoyed our stay. Our room had a lovely view of the river. we had a screened porch we could sit on to view it. The staff was friendly and helpful. Each room has a different set up and size so you should check the website to be sure you are getting a room that meets your needs. The town of Oxford is very small and very pleasant. Some excellent restaurants. We took the ferry (right down the street) to St Micheals for an afternoon. More to do there.

Went here for a one night romantic getaway with my Fiance. The place is like a converted mansion. Was greeted at the door by the innkeeper. Nice guy, offered a room upgrade for only $40 since I was staying in the small room they have, called the Cozy queen. It was a small room, nicely decorated with a claw foot bath tub. The place is right on the bay. My fiance and I enjoyed watching the sunset on the lawn chairs. In the morning, they brought a breakfast basket to our doorstep with coffee, some coffee cakes, cinnamon buns, yogurt, etc. It was so nice. I would definitely stay here again. Super quiet, low key, great place to go and get away from it all.

This is a delightful little inn on a river right off the Chesapeake Bay. The setting is picture perfect for relaxing and resting. Not much of a nightlife but that goes along with the tranquil part. The inn is well maintained with a nice selections of coffees and snacks. Bring a book or grab one from the library and sit in one of the beach chairs and listen to the waves or sit in a hanging chair on the back porch and listen to a warbler.

My wife and I were excited to get away from the 3 kids for a romantic one-night getaway. We arrived and were offered a room upgrade at check-in for a nominal fee. The room was fabulous (River, Deluxe, 2nd Fl) with amazing views of the river even while lying in bed! Binoculars are even provided in the room to view waterfowl on the river. It was a really windy night and we heard some banging during the wee hours, but the staff were responsive and even came out at 1 a.m. to secure rocking chairs in the adjacent unoccupied rooms. They offered to move us to another room, and when we declined, they waived the upgrade fee. Breakfast was delivered at 9 a.m. as promised and was yummy. Aside from the room, other amenities including the boat house and the library/pantry in the main house were also nice. The hotel is a short walk to the Robert Morris Inn, where we enjoyed a fabulous dinner featuring local foods. We will definitely be back.

I needed a little rest and relaxation and Sandaway was the perfect spot. the rolling lawn down to the beach was dotted with white Adirondak chairs with a beautiful view of the water. i brought a book with me but only read a few pages as I spent most of the time gazing out at the peaceful view! The breakfast basket provided at my doorstep the next morning was filled with goodies and a hot pot of coffee. remember to let them know if you are not a coffee drinker! There is a 24 hour cozy library just off the entryway which has snacks and beverages at no cost. The beach offered a fun collecting spree of sea glass. I actually found several rare pieces of hand blown glass! I will definitely return next fall.

"Wonderful place"

The Sandaway is such a relaxing place. We had a lovely room and could just wander onto the grass. An osprey liked to sit in the tree right outside and sat there eating a fish one morning. The porch was nice to sit in, or we could sit in the chairs on the lawn. Lovely sunsets. We had the hreakfast basket one morning and went to the Robert Morris in the other. Both fine, although the selection in the basket was unusual it was perfectly adequate for our needs. We also ate in the Robert Morris both nights as the food was excellent and the beer was good as well. We enjoyed exploring Oxford and the area. I would recommend the Blackwater Nature Reserve just outside Cambridge if you are interested in birds. We knew little about the area before our visit and were blown away. The weather was perfect, couldn't have asked for anything more.

"Perfect spot to enjoy kayaking"
05/19/15 PaulaL888 Melbourne Beach, Florida
I enjoyed two days kayaking right from the beach at Sandaway. You can kayak for miles on the Tred Avon. There are harbors to explore in Oxford and fantastic homemade ice cream at Highland Creamery. Schooners had the best crab cake that I've had in years. There is an adorable car ferry next door that will carry you to Bellevue and from there you can drive to St. Michaels. Oxford is a very quiet, beautiful town with a seafaring vibe. The total opposite of Ocean City. Romantic and relaxing, you can walk to everything that Oxford has to offer. I stayed in room 301 which consists of a spacious suite encompassing the entire 3rd floor. If you can't walk all the stairs this would not be the room for you. It was like visiting grandma's house; warm and charming right down to the yummy breakfast baskets.

"Great Week End Getaway"
05/19/15 JackMcDonald Raritan, New Jersey
A couple of other couple joined us here for a lovely stay. The grounds are just great, a nice shaded lawn opening onto a private beach with wonderful views across the bay. We enjoyed wine and conversation on the lawn sitting in the shade. how relaxing. We had a suite with a kingsize canopy bed, very comfortable. Big and I mean big comfortable bathroom with very large tub. There was even a wine cooler refigerator. Very charming room. A breakfast basket is brought to your screened in porch and left on a table. It contained fruit, yogurt, fresh pastry, carafe of coffee and other breakfast treats. Our group enjoyed breakfast out on the lawn. They have a separate boathouse for sitting close to the water if it is a little cool and a very nice library with a keurig coffee maker and various coffees for guest use. Everyone in our group thought this was a great place to experience. The Staff were very friendly.

"THE place to stay in Oxford"
05/13/15 John W T Provincetown, Massachusetts
First and foremost, this is THE place to stay in Oxford, MD. Located at the tip of Town Point, the Sandaway Lodge commands 300 degree views of the Tred Avon River. Its rolling lawn, generously dotted with chaises longues and Adirondack chairs, is a great place for watching the stately parade of sailboats glide by, sunbathing, or just reading a book. The ancient trees on the property are remarkable and, in summer, provide welcome shade. The Lodge itself is a rambling Victorian summer house, the furnishings soft and comfortable, and the interior decor generally avoids b&b twee (but I could have done without the ducks painted on the headboard.) Although nearby St. Michaels is perhaps better known by tourists, the town of Oxford is quieter and more seductively charming. It is much less developed (only one small market for groceries.) The tree-lined brick sidewalks invite an after-dinner stroll. Most of the town’s modest watermen’s houses of an earlier era have been charmingly restored and beautifully landscaped by retirees and weekenders from Baltimore and Washington. The Eastern Shore calls itself “the land of pleasant living,” and Oxford is the Eastern Shore at its very best. Five out of the town’s six restaurants are within walking distance of the Sandaway, and the Robert Morris Inn, the best of the lot, is a stone’s throw away. But if you came to the Eastern Shore in search of authentically prepared crabmeat, you’re not likely to be disappointed at any of them. The Sandaway provides quality teas, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks freely available throughout the day, either in the library or the waterfront boathouse. In my opinion Choptank 201 and 202 are the best rooms because of their second floor porches and commanding views of the river. The first floor rooms on the same side of the old house might be an acceptable substitute. I prefer ramshackle charm to the squeaky clean, but if you like the latter, you might enjoy a room in one of the recently-constructed cottages, buildings of the sort it’s probably better to look out of than behold from the exterior. (They are bad imitations of the Lodge’s gambrel roof and generous proportions.) The website is very clear that there is no cooked breakfast, but I have to say I found the contents of our breakfast basket eccentric and better suited for the appetite of an anorexic sparrow than two healthy adults: ONE serving of orange juice, ONE serving of milk, ONE serving of yogurt, ONE of granola, an unremarkable cinnamon bun, PEANUT BUTTER?, apple butter, and some cookies of the sort the stewardess throws you on an airplane. At this price point, it seems like they could do a little better, even if they want to avoid the hassle and labor costs of a seated breakfast. Some beat-up bicycles to loan guests for riding around town would be an inexpensive amenity the innkeepers might consider. Those not used to the sub-tropical climate of the Eastern Shore (Washington, DC used to be a hardship post for the British Foreign Service) might consider a visit in the spring or fall.

"Quiet weekend getaway"
04/22/15 Charleston_JDE Charleston, sc
We stayed the beginning of April, 2015. We were extremely pleased with the location and the facilities. We purchased a deal on Travel Zoo, not really knowing what to expect. Our expectations were exceeded. This hotel sits on a point into the Tred Avon river, in the wonderfully quaint town of Oxford, MD. We were greeted by the friendly innkeepers and shown to our room. We had a deluxe waterfront room looking out over the lawn and river. The room was clean and extremely quiet. My wife took advantage of the clawfoot tub as often as possible. We spent more than one afternoon sitting in the chairs overlooking the river. There are a lot of reviews on this website regarding the decor, but we found it perfectly adequate for our quiet weekend getaway. Additionally, we thought the breakfast basket was an excellent touch, and had more than enough food for two people in it. This not advertised as a hot breakfast, and it isn't, but works wonderfully to sit in your room and have a cup of coffee and watch the river. We did breakfast out at the Robert Morris Inn one morning, and while the food was good, we wished we had gotten the breakfast basket every morning. Water and snacks are available at all hours in multiple locations, and there is a beverage chiller we took advantage of for our own adult beverages. We spent one day in Oxford, and another in St Michael's, which is definitely a place to visit if in the area. We went prior to the ferry being in service, but with that available, traveling to St Michael's would have been a no-brainer. Again, we stayed the beginning of April. It appeared that most things really opened at the end of April, so we were somewhat limited in our dining options. We visited all three open restaurants for dinner, and had a great lunch at Ava's pizza in St. Michael's. This place is extremely peaceful for a quiet weekend, and I would definitely recommend visiting again. After visiting, I am disappointed that there are negative reviews, and people clearly didn't pay attention to the Sandaway website and the other reviews here, as we discovered that things were exactly as advertised, except for the peace and quiet, which was exemplary.

"Relaxing weekend at a charming b&b"
04/22/15 Amy D Portland, Oregon
We happened upon the Sandaway when looking for a short getaway from DC, where we live. The Sandaway is a very charming and quite place, perfect for a relaxing and romantic getaway. Best of all, it is situated right on the water on a big, quite plot of land. Our room as large with a king-sized bed and sitting area. The bathroom attached to our room was also large and had a big bathtub. Best of all, the room had a private screened-in porch where we could eat breakfast overlooking the grounds and water. Our stay included an adorable breakfast basket that was delivered outside our door before we awoke, which we enjoyed out on our porch. The breakfast basket included yogurts, coffee cake, breakfast bars, fruit, juice, milk, coffee, and a few other things. While they call it "light", we found it was more than enough to fill us up! The grounds are also beautiful and provide lots of outdoor seating and activities. There are plenty of lounge chairs and adirondack chairs for enjoying the view and a drink by the water. They also have two shared sitting rooms that both have beverages and snacks that are included (free of charge) in the stay. The town of Oxford is adorable and easy to walk around in and check out local restaurants and shops. It is also a close drive (or ferry ride if in season) to St. Michaels, which is another great town to visit. The Sandaway doesn't have many rooms, so there it feels very quiet and private because there is plenty of space for all the guests to spread out. We absolutely LOVED staying here and would definitely go back again!

"Very Disappointing"
04/21/15 Maldree Southern Shores, North Carolina
After reading all the positive reviews, I think we must have stayed at the wrong place. We had purchased two nights on Travel Zoo for the price of one (I guess), and we got what we paid for. I would suggest that you do not book "Carriage 103," a separate building from the house you see in photographs. Yes, the view is lovely, especially from the lawn chairs, and the room was spacious and clean. However, #103 had been converted to a room for someone in a wheelchair. The sink was very low, especially for my 6'4" husband, and the bathroom was strange. I could not bring myself to take a shower. Rather than achieving a Victorian decor, the mismatch of furniture reminded me of flea-market purchases. I remember road trips in the 1950's where we might get stuck at a motel with cabins, and from the moment I walked into the room, I saw those old dark and drab motel rooms -- certainly not romantic - no nice quilts and soft pillows. We should have requested another room, but something tells me this is the only one they offer for the Travel Zoo deal. Attention to detail on the part of the staff would have revealed the aging wallpaper, the nicked woodwork, the missing knob on the blinds, the broken tiles in the shower floor, etc. In any case, reserve at your own risk.

"What a Great place to stay and visit"
04/13/15 frank v Owings Mills, Maryland
This was our 1st visit to Oxford and The Sandaway. My wife and I will certainly go back. If you are looking for a great romantic, peaceful and feels like home getaway. Then this is the place. Everyone was so nice and kind. We were fortunate to meet Mrs. Gibson (The Owner). She was very welcoming. The room was great and very clean. The breakfast basket was great. The local restaurants were good also. I will recommend this to everyone! Frank V.

This is the perfect place for quiet tranquility. We were there in the off season. The downside was that only one restaurant was open in Oxford. It was Latitude 38,and it was wonderful. We were delighted that we upgraded to a river view room with its lovely balcony, or we could stay in bed and still see the serene waterfront. We will definitely return!
