"An easy walk and a great view"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
We stayed in the early spring. Glad to have a ceiling fan during the day and heater at night. The staff was very friendly. The town was just starting to open the tourist shops and the employees were nice to help us with any questions. Warning to other night owls, the town does shutdown shortly after the island and bars close their kitchens by 10. thers a store to get a few groceries in town or go to the next town over were the employees live. There was an issue with insects during the end of april. They didnt bite but came in swarms that hover near the coast. Don't plan on picnics but they can be walked thru if you go to the coast accross the street from the hotel. I love the fact that the hotel was walking distance to the ferry and the ferry shuttled us back after a long day at the island. Unfortunately The stone Arch on the island had a landslide the damaged the surrounding landscape, and partly filled in the Arch. Overall we loved our stay and the staff. The sight of the bridge nearby and the lighthouse were amazing.
"Right beside the boat to the island"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 1, 2012
The breakfast was very nice, waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy were all available, as well as, cereal and bagels. Would have loved to stay for a few days!!
"convenient"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 22, 2012
Staff was super friendly, room was spacious and reasonable. Our only complaint was that the blankets on both beds were threadbare. The binding was partially torn off on my blanket and had a big loop that my foot got tangled in getting out of bed in the morning. My friend's blanket actually had areas where you could see thru the blanket, it was so worn. I'd stay there again and hope they purchase new blankets! (The mattresses and pillows were great and seemed new.) We woke up too late for breakfast! Oops!

"Probably used to be nice in the 50's"
Our room was steps away from a small beach on Lake Huron but that was the only good thing we can say for this old motel. The water pressure was almost none existent in the shower, holes in the sheets on a small uncomfortable bed, a noisy air conditioner that hardly cooled the small room and a couple of ants on the floor. America's Best Value inn down […] the street was cheaper and very nice. Read more
"Northwinds Motel"
My husband and I stayed at the Northwinds Motel on our return home from the UP. Right away when we walked into the room it smelled old and musty! Room 8. We had to leave the window and the air conditioner (if that's what you want to call it) on high to sleep comfortably. You get a great view of the bridge, but there were no chairs to sit on to enjoy […] it. When we went to check ou the breakfast the next morning, there was a crockpot with white gravy in it, biscuits and dry cereal. Not one piece of fruit. We ended up driving to Gaylord, MI to the MacDonalds for breakfast. I would never suggested this place to anyone!!!!! Read more
"Northwinds Motel in Mackinaw City MI"
The hotel was an older hotel but was clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The beach was disappointing. The water was muddy and there was a dead fish that laid on the beach for two days. It is a good place to stay for a night or two but would not recommend spending an entire vacation at this location.
"Overpriced, highly disappointed."
The AC was not functioning properly, the bathroom was filthy, and the room itself had a funny smell. The breakfast that was served to us was total crap. For the amount of money I paid for the room, it felt like a total rip off.

Northwinds is one of four or so small motels managed bny the same family. We had to go to another location to register. The site was nice. The weather, great. T he motel room floor was "mushy". the tiles were falling off the shower wall. Our room was cleaned 1 day out of three. We had no towels the third day until we begged. No vacumming of the floor. […] The sink wasn't cleaned. The people were nice enough. We wouldn't stay there again. We'll start looking for lodging earlier next time we're at Mackinaw City. Read more
This hotel is a total blast from the past "motor- hotel" where all the rooms face out onto the parking lot and you can actually back your car right up to your door. And the back of the parking lot is right on the beach overlooking the docks where the Mackinac Island ferries are. It is located barely two miles along the shore from downtown Mackinaw City- […] and is an easy bike or walk on wide shoulders and sidewalks. The management owns several of these small hotels in a row along the beach, so you have access to a swimming pool (outdoor), several picnic tables, and even fire pits on the beach (with firewood provided!) It's also got somewhat larger rooms than you'd expect at the price. The caulk around the tub could stand a little work, but that was really our only complaint. Just lovely! Read more
