What a gem . From the warm and friendly owners and staff to the beautiful evening meal. The best mushroom soup (probably) is to be had here. Room was very pretty with comfortable bed. This is the place to stay in this area , don't miss it.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Very pleasant stay"
I stayed here recently on business. I don't usually review hotels but I was very impressed by the welcoming staff who went out of their way to make my short stay very pleasant. The hotel itself is a bit dated but I think it adds to it's character. Beds are very comfortable and the breakfast was delicious- particularly the coffee. Overall I had a lovely […] nights sleep and I will be staying here again if there are vacancies! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Our stay at the Coul House was excellent from the welcome when we arrived, through some good meals to our departure. The hotel is a grand stately home but very casual and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for the family owners and staff and it is encouraging to see that staff have been there for some time. The location is excellent for sightseeing […] and mountain biking and there is indoor storage for bikes. The gardens and grounds were superb and it's clear that a lot of work has been done to make them appeal to a wide range of guests. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Overnight at Coul House Contin"
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The owners have embarked on a labour of love in renovating and restoring this beautiful old country house and are bringing it into 21st century. Staff are extremely polite but not over-friendly and are only surpassed by the quality of food provided at excellent prices.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A beautiful escape in the country"
This is a long-term project by the owners, who have spent years bringing the hotel back from what sounded like a ruin ( they usefully give you annual "progress reports" from the start in you room index, which makes fascinating reading). in my opinion, they are succeeding magnificently! The service is efficient and friendly, the food is varied, delicious […] and well-presented, and the rooms are immaculately maintained. The bar/lounge area (which opens onto the large gardens) stocks a wide variety of local beers and spirits, supporting local businesses, and is a good place to relax before going in to dinner. There is a 9- hole putting range on the front "lawn", which is free for guests" but if you don't want such strenuous activity, a walk around the grounds is interesting in itself, with extensive, well-maintained gardens including a rane of exotic mature trees, such as giant sequoias and Douglas firs (helpfully labelled)! The hotel has magnificent views over the mountains and if you have more time, there are many walking trails which may be accessed from the hoel Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Très bon accueil, très beau cadre, très bon repas. La chambre était trop petite. Mais les hotes étaient très aimables et serviables. Le petit déjeuner excellent et copieux. Le pain fait maison comme tout d'ailleurs. Excellent souvenir. A recommander !Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Outstanding service and food in peaceful Highland setting"

I've been a regular guest at this late Georgian Grade A-listed country house hotel for both business and pleasure for some years now. I keep being drawn back by the relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere, the outstanding service and the high quality of the food. You can be assured of a warm welcome from the very much hands-on owners Stuart and Susannah and general manager Chris, while head chef Garry always delivers innovative, well-presented and boldy-flavoured dishes from the seasonally-changing menu. I've never had an even mildly disappointing meal here, let alone a bad one. The hotel is set in landscaped gardens in a quiet location reached from Contin village by a half-mile long driveway. Its geographical position close to the main routes makes the Coul House an ideal base from which to explore the Highlands. The bedrooms, most of which are located on the first floor, have views over the car park and gardens at the front of the building or to the rear over Strathconon to the hills beyond. They vary in size and shape from small singles to spacious doubles. On my most recent visit I was allocated a first-floor double at the front of the building. As well as the expected flat-screen TV, hospitality tray, hairdryer etc, there was an armchair and a second upholstered chair. The double bed was very comfortable. The small bathroom was equipped with an electric over-bath shower and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. The hotel offers free wi-fi connectivity throughout, but internet access in my room was intermittent, although on a previous visit staying in the same room I’d experienced no problems. One of the great pleasures of staying here is looking forward at the end of the day to a drink in the relaxing bar (or outside on the terrace on warmer evenings) followed by an excellent dinner in the distinctive octagonal dining room. The a la carte menu is supplemented by daily specials and the kitchen rightly prides itself on its home baking. Recent highlights included an outstanding starter of seared scallops on a warm tomato and mango salad with bulgar wheat, samphire and lime dressing, and a main course of calves liver with mashed potato flavoured with red onion, accompanied by a turnip and sage puree. The service by the friendly young staff was, as always, exemplary. Breakfasts are tasty and generous with a good selection of hot dishes. I can highly recommend this hotel and am already looking forward to a return visit to check out the new autumn menu!

Awesome place that is really well maintained. We have all stayed in newer properties that are not as well maintained and cleaned to the high standard of this stately home. For dinner nothing took my fancy so was about to venture into Inverness when chef asked what I would like, got a custom meal to suit my fussiness. 2yr old son had great fun in the garden chasing rabbits and then in the tree house and bouncing on the trampoline. He loved his food too. Only stayed one night but could have easily spent more time here especially if next time we decide to do sight seeing around Inverness. One issue forgot to mention to staff was that I nearly burnt my hand on the scolding hot tap water, had to wash the kids hands and face in the bathtub.
"Very Short Stay at Coul House"

Located close to where I wanted to climb, so arrived at 2200h and left again at 0800 next morning. However staff were great, especially accomodating my early breakfast needs, room was comfortable and food (well on the strength of the Poacher's Breakfast) was excellent.

It is with regret that we report our disappointment with the bedrooms at the hotel. The rooms we were allocated were small, had peeling wallpaper and in need of a refurbishment, the bathroom was tiny .We appreciate the house is old but the standard of the rooms did not reflect the cost. The rooms and linen were clean. On the positive side the public reception rooms were beautiful, the staff were very helpful and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel is in a lovely location ,but we left feeling slightly let down as we were in the area for a special occasion.

"Fabulous food and service"

The food here was superlative, with the chefs willing to modify almost any dish for a gluten free diner. You are treated to five star service as soon as you walk into the building from friendly staff. It's a little pricey, but well worth the cost. Well worth booking in advance.
"A very enjoyable stay"

Early July we had a very enjoyable 2 night stay. The gardens are really beautiful and full of surprises, perfect for walking our 2 dogs. We returned after a busy day sightseeing to freshly baked scones with jam and cream. Perfection! We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday - the food was excellent and the ambience peaceful. The owners are around to say hello to guests and have gone out of their way to make this country house hotel very homely and they have achieved this very well. The service was excellent. We were in a dog friendly room which was very clean but a little tired , however from my experience of travelling in Scotland tired is fairly normal and the gardens and hotel ambience more than made up for it! I would definitely recommend this hotel.
"Charming hotel with comfortable/quiet room"

This is a gem of a hotel with dedicated staff that work quickly/efficiently together. We started with 3 nights and extended our stay by one night. Located in the country side and very peaceful and quiet. Excellent food for dinner/breakfast but the menu for dinner changed very little during our stay. Nothing negative to say about the facilities or the staff.
"Stay out of the city"
08/09/14 Matt M Hollywood, Florida
This was by far one of my favorite places that we stayed in the UK. The staff was fantastic, they are a truly caring sort that want to make your experience worthwhile. Everything about this room was great. The breakfast was spectacular as well as the dinner. If you want a place that will let you thoroughly enjoy the beauty of what is around you in Scotland, this is the place. It is quiet, out of the way, and yes your cell phone will probably have no service, but who cares. Wifi is great, has all the modern things you could ask for and a beautiful location to boot. When we go back, this will be the place we stay. Stay on the second story, have your window open and enjoy the true peace that follows you in.

A wonderful, charming hotel set in a lovely location. The gardens are great, the room was nice and cozy and the food was fantastic - dinner was amazing. The staff were super helpful and very friendly. We booked this the night before and got the last room but even that was more than adequate and the bed was very comfortable. It's in the middle of nowhere but that's part of its charm. Totally recommend it.
