"Fantastic Retreat- Alone or together!"

I needed to get away from the SF Bay Area for some much needed relaxation and return to nature but didn't want to make the long trip this year for my "Oregon fix." I love the Sierra foothills and had driven through Murphys but never stayed there, but after reading about Dunbar House and having a fantastically warm and inviting phone chat with Arline, I booked a room for 8 nights. I didn't know how it would go staying there alone, even though I travel alone a good deal- B &B's can be tricky. I am here now, and I had no idea until I got here that because it was the day after Labor Day (the best time to travel if you want to avoid families), I am the ONLY ONE here! I have a very private, fantastic room! The private balcony is just perfect to sit out on after making my coffee in the Kuering in the room before going down to a fantastic breakfast! The inn is very roomy with lots of places to relax and be alone, and furnished in the most authentic historical comfy style, so you will feel right at home if you miss your Grandmother's house like I do. The gardens are huge, stunning, and I am taking complete advantage of the big hammock. Hearing the fountains is so comforting. Dunbar House is just off Main St. you can walk to most places in town. Murphys has some fantastic restaurants and wineries, and Calaveras Big Trees State Park is only about 20 minutes away. The house is quiet and the owners are quite protective about keeping the place private and safe for guests. Arline and Rick obviously take total pride in this place, and the attention to every detail shows. Though I am staying alone, I know coming here with my a partner would be fantastic, as the room is large enough, with a separate bathroom, (huge, 6 foot claw foot tub!) so along with the outdoor balcony seating, we would not get in each other's way. Though this B & B is authentic and historically preserved, it is the perfect mix with Wi-Fi, and Direct TV plus a refrigerator in the room. I already plan to book the same room next year to return for another peaceful respite from reality!
"Owners who think of everything"

Nice place, perfect location steps from downtown Murphys, and owners who truly have thought of every comfort -- from candy and nuts in the dining room to a Kindle in your room (right next to the well-stocked Keurig). Would definitely stay at the Dunbar again.

What a great place. From the moment you arrive you just feel so comfortable that its like being home with family and friends. The house is spectacular, very nicely decorated, the grounds are beautiful and the location can't be beat. We had the Sequoia Room which was tremendous. We enjoyed sitting on the rocking chairs on the front porch reading and just watching the world go by. There were a number of hummingbirds flitting about the fountain which were enjoyable to watch. We had breakfast served to us on the front porch which was tremendous. We very much enjoyed our time there and highly recommend that you enjoy it was well. You will not be disappointed.
"The place to stay!!"

This was our second stay at Dunbar House. Greeted with a warm welcome from Crystal. We stayed in the Ponderosa room upstairs this time. Last time, we had the Sequoia downstairs. Gotta say, liked both rooms. So charming and comfortable. The Keurig machine in the rooms was added since our last stay. Loved it. As previously said, it is great to be able to just walk on Main St to check out the shops, restaurants and wine tasting. The breakfast they serve is spot on. So delicious and the presentation is first class. Arline gave us excellent recommendations on restaurants and wineries. It was great to find out where everyone was from and how much we had in common. I think that's one of the great things about staying here. Meeting people in a relaxed environment and having a great breakfast together. This is our go to place to stay in Murphys. We have friends that live nearby and its nice to know that we have a home away from home. Thank you everyone at Dunbar House!!
"A place to stay in Murphys"

We have stayed numerous times at the Dunbar House and have never been disappointed. It is great to be within walking distance of many great wine tasting rooms and restaurants. Innkeepers Arline and Rich do a wonderful job of keeping the house charming and comfortable, the breakfasts are wonderful! A great place to unwind for a few days!

The Dunbar House has an excellent location just a block from downtown Murphys. Innkeeper Arline has excellent hospitality. She can recommend excellent restaurants like Alchmey which is where we ate that night. The room was very homey which included a closed in porch connecting the private bath and bedroom. Within the porch there was a refrigerator, Jacuzzi, and table for two. An excellent place to unwind with a glass of wine. There was a porch off the bedroom which led to the beautiful backyard. Breakfast was superb and filling. We highly recommend the Dunbar House next time you are in the town of Murphys CA.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Dunbar House and it was just as lovely. The rooms are charming and very comfortable with nice amenities. The house is in the perfect location for staying in Murphys. It is in walking distance of all the wine bars, restaurants and shops. The breakfast was delicious and generous. We really enjoyed our stay.
"Our two night stay at the Dunbar House, 1880"
07/24/14 Michael F Pittsburg, California
Our over all experience was absolutely wonderful. We were celebrating my 61st b-day, and our 14th wedding anniversary. The innkeepers are very friendly, and they take excellent care of this Victorian home, and the very attractive grounds / gardens. We met some friends that live in Murphys for dinner on Sunday evening--and we enjoyed the restaurant called "Grounds". Plus, we had fun walking around the historic downtown area of Murphys and the central park along a beautiful creek; which runs through town. Both breakfasts were presented well, and the food was fresh and prepared very professionally. Fresh coffee and juice were included. Our only suggestion regarding the food was that both breakfasts were too sweet and rich for our tastes. The other suggestion we will make is for the innkeepers to add a "non-slip" type removable mat for the bathtub. Finally--we should point out that the bedroom we had (on the 2nd floor) did not have a sink in the bathroom--the sink is located on the far side of the bedroom--as far from the bathroom as possible. We will come back to stay again at the Dunbar House someday--but, next trip we will ask for the room on the 2nd floor that has its own deck. (I believe it is called "The Ponderosa Room"?
"First time B&B experience!"

Celebrated a 2 day anniversary get away on a Thursday and Friday and it was our first time staying at a B&B. Very charming room with nice amenities and the breakfast was wonderful. But we did not receive complimentary wine or appetizers as "promised" when we booked our room and did not feel our place to have to ask. However, the homemade lemon bars were fabulous. For the high price was a bit disappointed in the plumbing fixtures, handles of faucet in sink loose and took forever for water to get hot. We stayed in the "Ponderosa", which was upstairs (make sure you can carry your own luggage!) It was an interesting experience.
"Charming B&B and Town of Murphys"
07/14/14 cwinsteadslo Arroyo Grande, California
This was a great way to spend my birthday in this charming B&B and the town of Murphys. We were spending two days at the elephant sanctuary in San Andreas called PAWS, "Performing Animal Welfare Society" and they selected the B&B for us. We had never been to the Sierra Foothills before and we found the area quite beautiful. We had the first room by the entrance, the Sequoia Room. It was spacious and had a super bathtub. The treats and drinks were delicious and the breakfasts were out of this world. Beautiful old Victorian two story house with great antiques and grounds but with all modern perks. The town was adorable and we had a great dinner at the old Murphys Hotel.
