A Gem In The Mountains Of Suzenji
Our stay at Arai Roykan was wonderful. The staff was very gracious and the food was excellent. The Roykan is rather old so the bathroom in our room was small and a bit inconvenient to use; however, the rest of the room was comfortable as any other roykan. The roykan is located in a nice country/mountain setting with a river running along side it. Very relaxing and quiet except for the running river. I would recommend this roykan for anyone looking for a place far away from the big city setting.

The dinner and breakfast meals were amazing. Many unusual items and many courses. That was the best part of the experience! The facilities were worn down. I would not pay $500 a night to stay there again, except the food really brought up the experience. The onsens varied from small and questionably clean, to an outside one that was pretty nice. The third onsen was like a temple setting and was nice, but again, a bit run down.

Historical ryokan
Stayed at Arai ryokan for two nights with my family. The culture heritage bath was impressive. Lovely gardens. However the private shower room which attached to our room was very cold. It was almost impossible to take a shower there.

Beautiful heritage ryokan
Excellent ryokan will lovely moss gardens, koi ponds and 4 onsens (one outdoor!). Rooms were clean and spacious, with attached bath and toilet - we had the yuki wing. The ryokan is very old but very well maintained and wonderfully preserves that old Edo period culture and feel. It felt like I was transported back in time. Onsens were clean and comfortable too - only downside was that I saw a big spider crawling on the walls of one of them!

Excellent Ryokan experience
The room was the best ryokan room I have stayed in with a wonderful view out over a fast flowing river and towards a bamboo forest. The food with its attention to detail and carefully sourced ingredients was as good as anything you'd get in a European Michelin starred restaurant and the service of the girl who served our room was exceptional. The location is convenient in the middle of the resort town of Shuzenji and with good access to surrounding attractions. The onsens were all outstanding too. Definitely hope to visit again.
