Hotel Noir - York

Only a short walk downtown, this place was great. We stayed one night and it was the most comfortable bed we slept in during our 2 week trip. Food in the hotel was okay.

Hotel Noir is trying to be an Ian Schrager circa 2004. It fails. The staff vary from charming to sullen. The 'compact' rooms are poky. The pillows are quite astonishingly uncomfy. Great location and breakfast however. To be honest travelodge is half the price, up the road and much better value. Find somewhere else is my advice.

We booked a small double room which was adequate for our needs. The facilities in the room were good: tassimo machine, rather than a kettle, memory foam pillows , comfortable mattress and a good quality clock radio & iPod doc. However, the room needed a lick of paint as there was chips out of all off the doors, skirting etc and marks on the walls. The hotel reception staff looked very unhappy. No smiles on arrival or welcome to our hotel, just a scowl and blunt questions. Perhaps they would benefit from doing a customer care course. The room was small damp and cold, the bathroom wasn't very clean and there were large chips of porcelain in the bathtub. The main light didn't work in the bathroom […] either. The towels were damp and had to be put over the radiator to dry before they could be used. The room was facing the main room so road noise has very bad, which was only drowned out when people were walking around the hotel and the floors squeaking. The room cost us £132 which I think was £90 too much. Oh and the bed is only just short of 6 foot so if you're tall expect to spend the night wit your feet hanging over the end. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. On checking out the same happy Larry receptionist took the key and checked their was nothing else to pay. She didn't ask if we had enjoyed our stay or anything so I suspect they have had so many complaints they don't even bother asking anymore. Don't stay here. Read more

We were impressed with cleanliness of hotel. We only booked one small double room but room was very cosy and bed very comfortable to sleep on. Good location-only 15 to 29 minutes walk to centre.

Bedroom was very clean and had tea/coffee making facilities, however no milk therefore was unable to use. shower was a mixer tap and was not very powerful so difficult to wash hair underneath it. Good location, only a 10-15 min walk to main sites (Minister) I.e. Get there early if you are after a car park behind the hotel. Rooms are well appointed and represent good value.

Having stayed in slighty-out-of-town York hotels many times before we were fully expecting the usual trying-a-bit-harder B&B style hotel, but was pleasantly surprised with the Hotel Noir. The hotel has obviously been renovated recently and has a contemporary feel about it. Although we booked a double room we were put in a family room with a double and […] two single beds. The room was comfortable and spacious although the bathroom was small and only had a shower. The room had features normally associated with larger hotels - tassimo style coffee maker, safe, iPod docking station and complementary mini-bar including beer, wine, soft drinks and fresh milk. If we had to criticise anything about the room it would be that all the plug sockets were obscured and we had to move one of the beds to plug in the hairdryer. The only gripe of the weekend was that the mini-bar wasn't restocked although the information book in the room said that it should be restocked every day. Breakfast was fine with usual choice of buffet and full english cooked to order, with plenty of staff on hand for such a small hotel. 10-15 min walk from the city walls or bus stop directly outside if you dont fancy walking! Clean and comfortable with a great breakfast. The guy on reception was extremely helpful and very pleasant with it as he had to locate a kettle for me as we wanted to make some tea. The hotel provides a Tassimo in the rooms with a choice of beverages which is better than most. We would stay there again quite happpily.

We enjoyed our stay. The room was as you'd expect for a budget hotel - tidy but a little worn in places. The hotel is very convenient to the city (20 mins walk) and has a car park. I would definitely recommend.

quality of workmanship bit tacky - I have never picked up a tile in my life but pretty sure I could do a better job tiling the bathroom. Just done on the cheap otherwise clean and a little dark and gloomy - probably the noir bit!

Stairs were a bit steep, I have always hated walking down steep stairs. Traffic noise was loud even with the windows closed but after spending all day walking round in York it didn't keep us awake. The food was excellent and the service very good. If we were to go back to York again we would be happy to stay at this hotel.
