"Good San Jose option"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 23, 2013
For a reasonable price I think Palma Real wasn't a bad option especially with all that was included for the price. There was a free airport transfer via another company but which was arranged through the hotel. I had a few minutes on the phone when I got there with reception before someone could give me details about the transfer.... never the less it was sorted out in the end. Check-in process was smooth and very helpful with all the necessary info on breakfast and free wifi. Very spacious room on the second floor. I did have a request for a king bed and despite that, both times we checked in there we got rooms with 2 separate double beds. The hotel itself and rooms all seemed modern and very updated ... Major plus in my books !! Buffet breakfast was good with adequate choices and seating areas.... hours run the typical 6 - 10 AM. A short walk from the hotel you also have a few other fast food options (Subway, Burger King etc). The park and stadium are also within a short 5 minute walk along with the bus stop that would take you directly into San Jose in less than 15 minutes for less than $1 One last thing that was very good and helpful.... we went to another part of Costa Rica for a few days, so rather than lugging around our large checked luggage, they were able to store it at the hotel until we came back. That was a real time & money saver !!
"Great Hotel, Convenient to the Airport"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 23, 2013
Our room was large and filled with all the amenities one expects at a decent business class hotel in the US. The surrounding neighborhood is nonexistent but you're probably just staying there for one night at the beginning and/or end of your Costa Rican sojourn, so who needs a neighborhood? The staff were well informed and friendly. One tip for those renting a car: the car rental locations are just over a mile away near the Denny's and Holiday Inn Express. Had we known this in advance, we might have stayed over there so as to ease the hassle of picking up/dropping off the car. For $5.00, though, the hotel van took us over at the start of our trip. We stayed at the Courtyard at the end of the trip as well. That time we just walked back to the hotel after dropping off the car. Not a lovely walk but an intersting walk.

staff is very helpful, polite and friendly. the whole building is in need of remodel, it was comfortable and convenient and right in the middle of downtown which made it easy to walk all over the place. tours are available through them and the staff is very helpful in booking them. it was a pleasant stay overall.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Stay"
What a pleasant surprise. The room was outdated, but the hotel was clean and comfortable. It had air-con and hot water for the showers. THe included breakfast was plentiful and delicious. "Room does NOT have most of the amenities promised"
Please be aware that the room promised with a list of amenities from hotels.com lacks almost everything... When I first got there, they were very polite and gave me a room right away but it had neither AC or fan, nor WiFi, nor a 32 inch TV... basically a trashy room... when I complained and showed them a printout of the list of amenities from hotels.com, […] they made me wait another fifteen minutes and then gave me a room which was slightly better... "Not for tourists or extended stay hotel."
Not so helpful staff (non-accomidating), room cleaning seemed rushed. I actually had to walk 5 blocks north to the Holiday Inn for tourist map/ activity info. I regret booking a full trip staying in this establishment.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Loved it!!!"
This was our first trip to Costa Rica. Found the Hotel Europa at Hotels.com and was pleasantly impressed with the overall location of the hotel. Learned that Hotel Europa was actually the first hotel in San Jose. Fell in love with the architecture of the hotel. The staff was the most pleasant and understanding staff that we have even had in any hotel. […] The staff went out of there to accomadate us with all our needs. "Older hotel, friendly staff, met our needs."
The hotel is old. It is down town. Shower drains were slow. We were eco-touring (back packing). We used the hotel as a jump start and to finish our journey. It was convenient and lower cost. "Worst Hotel Experience EVER"
STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL! They don't have internet, even though they advertise that they do. The elevator is out of service, and according to staff has been for the last 8 months. Showers had mold, broken glass on the doors, and sharp edges on the drain. Electrical wiring for the lamps was exposed. There are holes in the walls of the room where shelves […] or something had been taken down. The safe was locked OPEN (so that it wouldn't close) and the staff did not have the key for it. The only issue I had with this place was that the elevator was broken and we were on the 3rd floor. Not a big deal, but it could be a problem if you are physically incapable. No thrills hotel, good customer service at the reception, good location for the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Europa located in SJ shopping district"
I like staying at this hotel, having stayed there many times; I have written other positive reviews. But I want to say that it is so thoughtless and disrespectful of hotel staff to be yelling at one another at 6am out the back door of the kitchen which opens to the pool, with 12-15 hotel rooms within earshot. This has happened far too many times, like […] five, and also included a staff member blaring the kitchen radio at 5am, and I mean like a concert. I have been woken from my sleep numerous times, and totally rattled from the radio. Phone calls to the front desk yielded little change, and the next morning was no different. It is absurd to rent a hotel room and have to deal with this. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Happy With Stay"
The hotel personnel were very helpful and courteous. The rooms were very clean, but it does have "old" issues. Some things you just have to accept staying in a place that's over 100 years old. "Hotel Europa - central to shopping, nightlife"
very satisfied with my stay. Europa has a bit of old world charm as it was built in 1911, and clearly much of the original structure, woodwork, etc., is intact. Is it a Wynn hotel in Las Vegas? The hotel is very old in a shabby neighborhood. When I booked the room, it was indicated it was close to the airport. It is not. It's in downtown San Jose. Wifi did not work. "promise me anything"
This review will partly be a report on typical costa rican disconnect. Stayed here before so the lack of a tempurpedic as promised did not phase, but the dysfunctional front desk man/boy who needed a print out to ck me in without exception, so we had to get my email there in the lobby and he was incapable of printing it without great difficulty. I sympathetically […] stood by gently with great, well not so good spanish facilitating as best I could. Second, the wifi was apologetically down and would not be fixed until after I was gone. And so on to the condition of the room; it was falling apart; a little anyway, the shower head fell off in my hand, but no worries the scalding hot h20 took my attention away from that. I feel overall the europa has an attitude problem with promises they cannot keep and fail to recognize as significant. Bottom line its a crap shoot place to stay, I have heard worse stories and so was ready. Last year it was a bit better experience. This year it seems the attitude is worse maybe its the economy? This hotel is a short 20 min drive from the san jose airport. Taxi runs about $25 to hotel. Hotel will exchange currency for better rate than airport, and no fee so wait if you can. rate was 500 colones per 1 usd, were airport was 440 colones per 1 usd. Great reception area. Casino next door w slots and tables. Rooms are nice, large, little out dated […] but clean and more than worth price per night. Breafast is nice buffet plate they fix for you. Was two in rm and thought price included 2 for buffet, but on second day, was req to pay $6 for second person, but no big deal. Great pick up and drop off for day trips and excusions from hotel, to volcano, baldi spas, etc. Plan on going back for white water rafting with friends and def will stay here again. "Just a few issues"
The hotel had no maps of any kind, and the tour desk was permanently unmanned,. However they did arrange a good tour for me. Breakfasts (included) and lunches (not included) are served cafeteria style from behind steam tables. Signs advise that breakfast and lunch will "only be served once." In other words, don't ask for seconds. I think this is chintzy. […] It's also unnecessary as the portions are large and the servers will add to them if asked. There was no TV remote control in my room, nor was I handed one when I checked in. I had to go back down and ask for one. On the positive side, the breakfast food was good, the cable TV worked fine, and they have a very nice pool, which for some strange reason no one else ever used. Yes, they keep it clean. Both the bar and the restaurant serve local beer (Imperial) for the equivalent of $2 a bottle, and I had a very nice ceviche appetizer with one of my beers for about the same price. Major museums and shopping are within easy walking distance. The hotel also maintains a good infrastructure because during an earthquake (I was in my room; there was no damage) the power never went out. Considering what I paid, which was about half their publicly posted rates, I feel I got very good value. Note -This is NOT the RADISSON Europa; that is a totally different - and more expensive - hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Next time I stay in San Jose, I'm looking at this hotel first."
Had a very good stay at the Hotel Europa. Rate was very competitive, and they let me keep the same rate when I extended my stay. Helpful and friendly staff. Rooms and furniture were rather old and worn, but clean and comfortable. Nice, big TV screen in my room. Good A/C. WiFi worked most of the time, and the connection was fast. Hot water was scarce […] in the early morning, but worked the rest of the time. Pool was warm and good for tanning in the early afternoon. Free breakfast was a nice perk, though the quality of the food at the restaurant left a lot to be desired. Very convenient location in the middle of San Jose. Once probably a four star that with age has slipped to three. Retains elements of its past character but its age definitely shows as well.
