This is a small, quiet, comfortable boutique type hotel that has a lot of character within walking distance to a multitude of restaurants. It is owned and run by a very accommodating and welcoming family who have the cutest little dog that loves to give many doggie kisses. One suggestion I would have for the owners is for them to offer breakfast for their guests.

"Generally great"Reviewed by Karen G. of "Austin, TX" on Feb 27, 2012
Beautiful grounds, nicely renovated rooms, and the resort did not seem crowded, despite being fully booked. The beach was perfect although the snorkeling was not as good as I had expected; this could be due to the rough seas and windy weather, however. The buffet was incredibly diverse and had lots of perfectly good food. Not 5 star restaurant quality, but just fine, and some dishes--especially the Mexican ones--were real stand-outs. The desk, housekeeping, and buffet staff are excellent. We toured other nearby areas such as Tulum and Akumal independently in a rented vehicle and felt perfectly safe.
"Perfect for short stay"Reviewed by Frank of "Michigan" on Feb 15, 2012
CLEAN. Great for a short stay. Very hard beds. Would definetly stay again. Hard to find. Know how to get there ahead of time. Pool is just to cool off in warm weather. No real pool. If you keep your expectations to the right level you will be pleasantly surprised with this property.
"Odd mix - good cenote, pools, but parts run down."Reviewed by PenangFolk of "Houston, TX" on Jan 3, 2012
Interesting resort that has a cenote / lake within its area - easily identified in Google Maps satellite view. It was apparently part of a much larger mini-zoo eco-park type property, now split in to two, which also includes a lagoon. The cenote / lake is very large and we had fun kayaking the entire length. Waters are clear enough for some snorkeling too. A separate lagoon (outside current resort boundaries) is accessible walking along the beach, and we also tried snorkeling there. We saw lots of wildlife in the premises - a racoon, coatis, a large snake, 3 foot long iguanas. The accommodation is in the form of tall thatched huts, with one room at the first floor and one room at the ground floor. The rooms were nice, but the room at the first floor felt a bit dark due to the thatched ceiling. The exterior of our huts was a bit run down and our huts were next to abandoned animal enclosures, partially shielded by trees, so a bit ugly. The resort covers a large area, walking between the reception, the pool and the accommodation or waiting the for golf carts got a bit tedious. We did not take the all-inclusive plan, but we had a car, and there are plenty of places to eat in nearby Puerto Aventuras area, including pretty good pizza and chinese takeaways, and a taco joint.

Built on a bluff facing the rising sun, the Mayan ruins of Tulum offer breathtaking views of the Caribbean. Just south of Akumal, Tulum’s proximity to Cancun makes it the most visited archeological site in Mexico. The village of Tulum, along the main highway, offers shops, restaurants, and cantinas. To the north, tourists can swim with dolphins or dive among brilliantly colored fish at Xel-Ha.

Great location, friendly staff. As with other "eco-hotels" in the area, they turn off all the power at night (it goes down randomly as well when the generators stop) and there are no outlets in the rooms so bring a flashlight. They are cool about you charging your laptops/ phones in the restaurant area though and WiFi works sometimes. Honestly though, […] for someone like me who is always on the internet, it helped me detach and enjoy my surroundings by not having WiFi all the time. It's true what the other reviewers say, I found everything in my room from lizards, crabs, giant roaches to mosquitos... but i woke up every day to the sound of waves crashing and the sunrise on my face... "Retiro Maya- expensive camping"
I have stayed in tulum hotels many times in the past 5 years and am very comfortable with rustic living. However, I was very disappointed in the service, comfortability of Retiro Maya. It was WAY overpriced for the condition of the hotel and falsely advertises free breakfast and wifi. In fact, we asked for coffee at the restaurant in the morning thinking […] it was free, only to be charged on our checkout day. Very deceptive business, mattresses were painfully uncomfortable, and mosquito netting for beds smelled bad and had huge holes. Read more
"Retiro Maya-a wonderful off-the-grid experience"
Travelers need to know that electricity availability will be minimal--this is a rustic experience. But the quiet, beauty and comfort makes it a wonderful place to visit. We hope to return many times. We spent a week enjoying the sand, surf and sun, relishing the calm retreat from a hectic life. Bring a flashlight to make the walks to and from other […] restaurants at night easier. You should also bring your own soap and shampoo. The tap water is safe to drink but tastes salty so you'll probably want to stock up at the grocery store in town. As always, we brought many more clothes than we needed, since we spent nearly every day in our bathing suits. Pack lightly--you'll be glad you did. The hotel provided mosquito netting and we brought bug spray but we visited in March-the windy season- and didn't need them. Read more
"Rustic Eco Hotel Cabanas"
The beach is pristine, the ocean is gorgeous. The staff was friendly and the yoga space was lovely. The cabanas don't have power outlets to plug in electronics, so you have to use those in the restaurant. The food was okay, but not great and very expensive just like all of the food on the beach. There were holes in our mosquito net, and it was quite […] uncomfortable when the mosquitos got in. The light in the room wasn't very bright, so reading at night was somewhat hard, and there wasn't a comfortable place to read other than hiding under the mosquito net on the bed because anywhere else the bugs would get us. There is generally no hot water, although it was warm a couple of times, it was chilly to shower at night with the wind coming through. We were a few cabanas back from the ocean, and it was very hot at night even with the fan blowing on us. An uncomfortable sleep with the heat and the bugs. The beds were okay, but my boyfriend's feet were hanging off and he's not all that tall - anyone close to 6 feet would be a bit cramped. In all, it was okay for the price compared to other places that were way more, but Tulum is silly expensive in general. Read more

Für Backpackers das passende, ansonsten legt lieber ein paar Euro mehr darauf und gönnt euch etwas mehr "Luxus" !!! 100 Meter rauf und runter ist der Strand genauso schön !!!
