Hotel Sunlite Shinjuku - Tokyo

First trip to Japan. Room was REALLY small. I'm 6' and my head almost touches the ceiling in the bathroom. Beds were small twins but were comfy enough to get a good night's sleep. This was a very inexpensive (for Japan) no frills hotel. Get some sleep and GET OUT and enjoy the city.

Overall: I only recommend staying at this hotel if you can get a room away from the street, as the street is noisy with car and motorcycle traffic. Room: Typical size for Japanese hotel (about 2m wide). Very clean. Bed was nice and firm, pillow was good too. Internet was really fast (cable only, no wifi in the room). About 5 minute walk to the hip areas of Shinjuku, 10-12 minutes to the Shinjuku station JR Yamanote line. The location is due east of the Kabukicho "Red Light" district but you can easily avoid the area at night- at no point did we feel unsafe at all (the most sketchy areas of Japan are about as dangerous as the safest areas in the rest of the world). If you are on a budget this hotel works, but I prefer to stay on the west side of Shinjuku station where it is a lot quieter (and still a quick walk to the restaurants and bars). Read more

It wouldn't make a 3-star as a US hotel, but it's a 3-star for Japan. It worked for me because I was only there to sleep, and the price was right. The room was a closet, but I expected that. You had to step up about 9 inches to get into the bathroom which had about enough room to turn around in. Hooked up to the bathroom sink is a hose that feeds your […] hand-held shower wand. The hallways and doors looked like they had been recently updated. The main lobby is across a narrow street from the building where the rooms are. The staff was very helpful and even held my luggage overnight even though I wasn't checking in until the next day. The hotel was located just a couple blocks away from the busy areas of Shinjuku. It's easily accessible and really close (5-10 min walk) to the Shinjuku Main Station. However, besides the location, the hotel was very below par. When we got to our rooms, we saw that there was a bunch of dust piling up on the floor right up against the walls of the room. […] Whoever vacuums these rooms does a really poor job! I was sneezing the whole time, and they didn't clean the dust even with repeated calls to housekeeping. They're stingy with the towels, the beds were slightly lumpy, the rooms barely had any outlets, and the "refrigerator" barely kept any of our drinks cool. I don't recommend you put any food items or anything perishable in the fridge. Also, I believe the description of the hotel was incorrect on the Hotels.com website. This is basically a hotel for either business travelers or students. Not really for families, as the rooms are not that big. If you need a good place to stay but won't be staying there for that long each day, then this place is for you. It's in a convenient area, but 10-15 min walk from "downtown" Shinjuku.

Sunlite Shinjuku is a decent hotel with basic stuff: A small restaurant downstairs, WIFI at the lobby and laundry for guests. It was clean and decently maintained. Single room is really small. The toilets are also narrow. All the TV channels are in japanese, so i have just look at the picture, no movies channels. But, room is clean and correct for the price. Shinjuku is a good area for young people.

My only complaints about this hotel are the lack of an English-written sign outside identifying the hotel...the only large sign is written in Japanese and a lack of space. The room, while functional, clean, and modern, is VERY small. Not enough room to comfortably maneuver between the bed and the desk, if someone is sitting in the chair, and barely […] enough floor space to handle three large pieces of luggage. As I had written, the room itself is very clean, modern, and functional. The bed may be a bit hard for Western standards, it's about as comfortable as a futon mattress on the floor. The bathroom is small, but modern and clean. The toilets have the nice modern features, heated seat, and bidet option. The shower had incredible water pressure...which was really nice. The countertop in the bathroom was large enough to put toiletries on. If you're only going to spend a night or two in Tokyo, then I can recommend the Shinjuku Sunlite Plaza. Read more

If you don't mind the fact that the hotel is stuck in the 1970s (needs to be remodeled, but then the price will go up) definitely go here. It is located 10 mins from the Shinjuku Station, 3 minutes from the metro Shinjuku Sanchome, nice neighborhood, very friendly staff. They have free wired internet that works very well (wireless is unusual in Japanese […] hotels -- that has to do with internet legislation) and a computer in the lobby -- but I haven't tried this one, as I was connecting from the room. I found this place as a replacement for my initial hotel when I had to change the dates and I'm glad I did. This place was in a much better location. Getting to it the first time was a bit tricky but after a day I could get from the subway stations to it no problem. It's pretty close to the Tokyo Metro station and just a bit further is the JR station. […] You're about 5 minutes from the Shinjuku red light district and 10 minutes from the shopping areas of Shinjuku. There's a Lawsons and a 7/11 nearby for 24 hour food, but you'll need to walk 10 minutes to get to the major restaurant area. The rooms are pretty standard if a bit larger than I would expect. They have PPV porn in the room too. There's a policy of leaving your key at the front desk and them locking up between 2am and 5:30am, which was only a problem for me once where I had to get back earlier than I wanted. If you have kids the windows even on the 7th floor didn't have any screen so.... Skip the breakfast it was disappointing. Some of the staff are okay with English, but most weren't English speakers. Nothing went right with this hotel except for my checkin. I stayed one night and that was more than enough for me. I have stayed in other Tokyo hotels but this is not a 3 star star hotel in my opinion. The hotel closes between 2am and 5am and is split into 2 buildings. A wonderful hotel in a great location - the closest metro stop is only minutes away. The hotel and room were very clean. The room was small, which is normal for Tokyo, but it was sufficient for both my suit cases, had a double bed and a desk. Internet in the room was through the cable, not wifi. There is no safe in the room, so you need to check all valuables with the front desk when you leave the room - but this just takes seconds to do on your way out. I ate dinner at the hotel restaurant one evening and it was wonderful - I recommend their sliced beef flank steak. Also you can pay with a credit card for your meals at the hotel restaurant - I found it was not common that places would accept credit card payment in Tokyo. Read more

Had to step up into the bathroom, looked like it was installed as an afterthought as a normal sized american will not fit in it and tub faucet is just a line from the sink ... LOVED the location of the hotel (about a 3-minute walk from Shinjuku Sanchome station/Isetan, and 6-minute to Shinjuku's main hub of activity). Also very close to Shinjuku garden (very pretty), a shrine and a Family Mart and a million drink vending machines. It is also at the tail end of an area known for red light activity and yakuza BUT I actually […] walked through there and it was completely and totally safe. Hotel itself is very safe, brightly lit and always staffed. There's a curfew but if you miss it, the one staff member working will open up the reception for you. People at the front desk were moderately professional. Some of the staff spoke very limited English, but when I needed help with trickier things they found another staff member who did. The staff were also nice and let us borrow the hotel's umbrellas! Free wifi in the lobby, free washer/dryer for use (be warned - it takes about 2.5 hrs!) with cheap laundry powder if needed. You can also rent a PC to bring back to your room (not sure if the wired internet in the rooms are free or not). The TV was broken though (could only get the adultchannels and not free to air). Beds were okay. Bathroom was super clean and awesome, but can imagine tall/large people might find it a bit of a squeeze. Would definitely stay here again for the location and price! Read more

We were allocated a room in the annex of the hotel, which is across the alley way from the main building. This was the smallest (bath)room on our trip to Japan. The hard-wired LAN internet connection worked well. Can’t comment on breakfast, or other facilities as we didn’t use them.
