Aimed more at business travelers rather than leisure, it is nonetheless a good base for leisure travelers too. Situated nearby to 2 metro stations that provide access to most tourist spots.Genuine Expedia guest review
My first visit to Japan and the experience was XLNT. Only hiccup was some noisy folk in the room upstairs but a quick visit to the front desk had those party-goers shut down inside 5 minutes. Rooms are a good size and the hotel is just 2 minutes walk from the subway / metro. Pleasant small coffee shop across the street for snacks. Breakfast was more […] than I could eat. Free wifi in the room on request. Akasaka Avanshell in Tokyo was a nice and clean hotel near the subway and bus stations. It was my first time staying there and it was a pleasant experience. "Excellent value in Tokyo"
The Avanshell rooms are very spacious and a very good value for Tokyo. We booked a "triple" for myself, wife, and daughter. The third bed was a sofa bed, which was perfect for our daughter and allowed us to fold it up and take advantage of the spacious room during the day. The room also included a small kitchen area with a microwave oven. The location […] is 1 block from Akasaka station on the Chiyoda Subway line and is very close to many restaurants. Very convenient. "Little gem of a hotel with huge rooms"
This hotel is a real find! The rooms are huge (especially by Japanese standards) with a balcony and a little kitchenette area including microwave. The staff are incredibly thoughtful and helpful (we stayed in the hotel at the beginning and end of our trip and they automatically took our stored luggage up to our room before we checked in the second […] time and remembered to change the pillows from feather to hypoallergenic). The receptionists all speak pretty good English and seem happy to help you plan your day out. The only potential downside is that the hotel doesn't have many amenities eg no restaurant or swimming pool. But there are lots of restaurants close by (including an Italian place next door) and they have an arrangement with a local gym if you really want to use one. The hotel is near two metro stations (one is directly behind the hotel) and there are a couple of small supermarkets nearby. The nearest tourist attractions are the imperial palace and the Roppongi area which has lots of good bars and restaurants. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is just behind 1 of the exit of Akasaka station, however Akasaka is on Chiyoda line and you need to transfer to go those main city or attraction area like Shinjuku. Not a very convenience location to me for travelling around in Tokyo, although it has shops and restaurant at neighbourhood. Hotel is a kind of average and a bit old. But the staff […] is friendly and the room interior is generally nice and standard. Unfortunately they put me at the room where is the corner of the housekeeping put their dirty linen bags, is kind of made me uncomfortable. "Large room and very close to metro"
We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights on March 2014. The location is very close to Chiyoda metro line (about 2 minutes walk), however we find that the Ginza line is just a 10 minutes walk and you'll get to major location (ex. Shibuya, Ginza, and Ueno) without having to change trains. The room size is large and comfortable. However if you choose the smoking […] room it smells a little bit. There is a small kitchen in the room with microwave and an electric burner. The bathroom is nice and clean with many amendments. There is a supermarket just opposite the front of the hotel in which you can buy for a low price. Also, there is a good sushi restaurant, Sushi Midori, in the Akasaka Sacas building nearby. Highly recommend this place! We were very pleasantly surprised by the huge room, which had all the facilities of a more expensive hotel—kitchenette, bath products, robes, slippers, tv, fresh towels each day etc. The junior suite we booked had 2 x double beds and a fold out bed which was more than ample. "A great find for Tokyo"
Whilst this isn't a grand luxury hotel - nor does it claim to be - it is a perfect base for exploring Tokyo. We had requested a room with natural light and that's what we were given. Good size with a seperate seating area. Balcony (although views nothing to write home about). Staff VERY helpful and welcoming.
We are a party of 3 and stayed one night at the start of our Japan holiday. We caught the NEX to Tokyo station and in stead of getting a taxi to the hotel we were brave and took the Subway. REALLY easy and we saved so much money. The best exit if you have luggage is number 2( because it has an escalator). 1 is closer but lots of stairs. Come out of 1, turn left, then turn into the alley and follow the alley - you are at the hotel! Wish someone had told us that - we got very lost. Lively huge room, nice welcome. We didn't eat breakfast...went back to the station entrance area and found an Excelsior coffee house. I was impressed with my booking enquiry and the follow through has all lined up. We will return at the end of our trip. Only complaint was noisy air con that I couldn't work out how to turn off but I would ask next time.
"Perfect for us - Akasaka is great"
06/10/14 lisaaw tasmania
Tokyo Avanshell and Akasaka I chose this hotel as it was convenient for visiting a friend living in Mid-town Residences nearby. It was really reasonably priced at Y13700 per night and a very very big room. It was comfortable and relaxing as the area it is in is so quiet. We had breakfast included but it was a rather lacklustre affair, like you would make at home either Japanese or Western style. It was very cheap. At night the restaurant is an Italian one, but it was empty as we went past with no atmosphere and we quickly found cheaper pizza and better looking place up through the laneway in Akasaka The staff were very helpful and even though I spoke with them in Japanese, they are very competent speakers of English. The hotel was incredibly convenient in other ways. Just beside the hotel along a pleasant walkway of 50m or so takes you out onto a convenient local area. In front of the massive Biz Tower is a piazza of great cafes and drinking spots, very sophisticated. We went to B&R sat out on the terrace. Very relaxing, slow wervisce though. There are numerous Massage therapy and Back specialists ( all that sitting in seats all day for poor salary man) and some great Izekaya, Chinese and other Japanese restaurants. Underneath Biz Tower is a plethora of shops and restaurants that we didnt even see. Hiie Ginja a beautiful shrine, is nearby walk and incredible modern buildings surrounding it make it very interesting. We are not in Kyoto now! We went to Roppongi Hills to the fabulous 52nd storey Mori Museum 10 in ride by taxi or quicker trainride. Its a 1 minute walk from The Akasaka station on the Chiyoda line.
"Good value for Tokyo"
05/08/14 HowIzzThiz World
As others have said, the room is very generous by Japanese standards. We booked a double and it was more like a studio apartment, with a small kitchenette. Location was excellent, just 2 minutes from the subway (Chiyoda Line) and close to many restaurants and bars. The reception is a bit understaffed at night but generally not a problem. Make sure you get a card from the hotel if you are planning on taking a taxi, rather than just telling the driver the name and hoping that he can find it!
"Massive room, great amenities, decent location"
04/26/14 Jonathan B Baldock, United Kingdom
We stayed here in April 2014. Opted for a deluxe twin room which was absolutely huge. Lots of reviews said the rooms were big but we were really surprised. The next nice surprise was how many amenities were included in the room. Aside from the usual stuff in the bathroom, kettle, fridge etc. we were pleased to find loads of storage space, fabric freshener, and an iron. The latter was a godsend as we'd been living out of a suitcase for quite a while. The room was quiet and had good airconditioning (when we figured out how to use it). The bathroom was basic but decent. As others have mentioned it's a shower over bath type affair. We had no issues with hot water or water pressure. The room wasn't very modern - some of the decor was starting to look a little dated. To be honest though this wasn't a problem in the slightest as the room was so clean and comfortable. The location is pretty good. Nearby there are some nice bars and restaurants. In particular there's a nice sushi restaurant on the second floor of the nearby atrium building. The metro is a short walk away. It's not super convenient as it seems like everywhere we went needed at least 2 changes, but the trains are so clean and cheap it's not really a problem. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here. We'd definitely stay again and would recommend.

This hotel is a real find! The rooms are huge, especially by Japanese standards, and have a balcony and a little kitchenette with a microwave. The staff are thoughtful and efficient (we stayed at the hotel at the start and end of our trip and they automatically put hypoallergenic pillows in our room the second time we stayed) and the receptionists speak remarkably good English and always seem happy to help. There are two metro stations close to the hotel (one is directly behind the hotel) and local tourist attractions include the imperial palace and some well known shrines. The Rappongi district (good for nightlife) is also close by. On the downside, the hotel has few amenities e.g. no restaurant or swimming pool, but there are lots of restaurants and supermarkets on and around the same road as the hotel, and the hotel also has an arrangement with a local gym.
"Perfect location; perfect cost-benefit ratio"
03/22/14 AhasverSaoPaulo Sao Paulo
If you wondered about the meaning of the hotel's name - it is the katakana version of URBAN Shell, slightly lost in transliteration. Its hard to beat the hotel's location; right in the middle of Akasaka (dozens of restaurants literally around the corner) and close to 4 subway lines. The Chiyoda line Akasaka station's #2 entrance is just around the corner. The giant Hiei Jinja (shrine) is a ten minutes walk away, so is Ark Hills (ANA-Hotel & airport limousine bus) and the famous Roppongi crossing. We stayed here twice during the month of February (rooms 505 and 907, respectively) The hotel itself keeps staff and cost to a minimum but still they will help with your luggage etc. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and they will get out of their way to help you solve any problem a tourist might have.Making phone calls for you, inquiries, etc. A light bulb was replaced within minutes and other fixes were dealt with quickly as well. The rooms are very spacious and well furnished (you might even get a massage chair) however, the bathrooms are small but have all the usual amenities, including free tooth brushes. Hot water is slow to arrive. Room 505 also had a microwave. The hotel has no lobby and no restaurant. Breakfast (nothing special) can be had in the Italian restaurant Pippo underneath the front part of the hotel. You must buy the respective coupon (was $15, now $13) first. The hotel's architecture is in the Japanese "mansion" style meaning that the elevator is outside and rooms are accessible form an outdoor gallery, only. During the snow storm in early February that was a problem. In room 505 the beds were placed head against the window so the cold could creep in during the night. 907 did not have this problem. The hotel does not have a health club but guests can use a nearby (10 mins walk) one for a fee of $25. The hotel's fast and efficient laundry service is very reasonably priced. Cleaning a dress shirt will set you back only $5 (remember, this is Tokyo!) much cheaper than in other hotels. If that still sounds too much, there is a coin laundry around the corner. Another unusual service of the hotel is that for guests returning within a fortnight or so they will keep your luggage so you will find it waiting in your room already, upon your return. This is a great service for foreigners spending several weeks traveling all over Japan but who do not want to carry all their luggage the entire trip. Overall, of the 7 hotels we stayed in during our month-long trip this one offered the best cost-benefit ratio and we will definitely return here.
"Sterile and boring, but excellent value"
02/08/14 Raintree_Thailand Bangkok, Thailand
There's nothing exceptional about the Hotel Avanshell Akasaka. But, by Japanese standards, the rooms are huge, with large bed, working desk, couch, coffee table, adequate closet space and decent-sized bathroom. Perfectly clean and maintained. Heated toilet seat and lots of reliable hot water. Good bathroom amenities. Hot water pot and complimentary coffee, tea, and bottled water. TV with a couple of English channels, including CNN. Linens comfortable. Bed hard, but good for sleeping. Responsive thermostat for air control. The lobby is tiny, but the front-desk staff are friendly and helpful, and speak reasonable English. The only restaurant is an attached Italian place which seems rather out of place and never seemed to have any customers. But there are dozens of great choices in the numerous small streets and allies in the neighborhood. The location is great, with lots of shops, restaurants, convenience stores and other nearby. The Metro is only a minute or two away. Again, nothing really outstanding about the place, but the price is excellent for Tokyo and value-for-money is great! I highly recommend.
"Good sized rooms. Good location"
01/14/14 Rattyos Weipa, Australia
We stayed with our two boys aged 7 and 9 in a junior suite. We had two king single beds in the main area and two futon beds in the Japanese style room off to the side. The room space was very large. I loved the Japanese room with the matted floor and dining table. The hotel staff were very friendly. The location was great with some funky shops and eating near by and the Akasaka metro station very close. We ate at an excellent Yakitori place down the road and a Korean restaurant around the corner (which we did not enjoy so much), We had breakfast at the hotel one morning which was only 1300y and was pretty good with miso, rice, croissants, ham, brie and some cereal. We stayed on the 3rd floor but our friends were on the 7th floor in a different style 4 bed room with a nice view. Definitely recommend this hotel.
