Good hotel. In response to other comments: It is true that the rooms are small by North American standards, but mine was not tiny. There was easily enough room for my luggage (several suitcases and bags) and room for me to sit at the desk and move around. If you are going to open your luggage, you'll probably need to do that by putting the case on the […] bed, but that's what I do at any hotel anyway. That staff are friendly and helpful; they can help you get to wherever you want to go and plan a little. Cheerful, helpful staff (with good English language skills), and walking distance to the Asakusa temple complex and Ueno Park, made this a good and thrifty choice. It is also convenient for transit to/from Narita airport. I got the Japanese style room which is small, but that's what it's supposed to be. The hotel employees were very polite, and if you don't have much experience with Japanese a lot of them spoke English too. Great hotel. To get there you take the JR line to Ueno and it's a short walk from there.

I've stayed here several times, and I don't know of a better hotel in Tokyo for this money. The Oak is cosy and well-maintained, with a friendly, efficient staff, and is convenient to many of the city's best sights. This is a cheap, conveniently located hotel and OK for a single person just for sleeping a night. The room smelled strange (bleach or some kind of disinfectant), and the bathroom is incredibly small. I opened the window and only found a concrete wall. No safebox in the room, and I was not sure if it was safe to ask the front desk to keep my passport. […] The bed was small and with bad cushion. No couch; only a very small chair. Air conditioner allowed me to select either over-heating or no heating. The cup at the sink was never changed throughout my six nights of stay. The so-called lobby had a small table with wireless internet access, but kids of employees were always there, eating their lunch or playing video games. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive stay in Tokyo, this is hard to beat. Hotel is fine, but nothing fancy. Rooms are small and bathroom is cramped. Location is excellent, though. 10 minute walk from Ueno station (on the Keisei Narita Express) and a 10-15 minute walk to the old Japanese neighborhoods. Not easy to find the hotel itself, but they put out an electronic sign pointing you where to turn.

Room was just enough for 2. Slept in Japanese-style room (tatami mattress, no bed mattress and frame). Provided mini-fridge, tv, water heater, hair dryer and private bathroom. Ground floor has a laundry room where you can wash and dry-spin your clothes for 200yen and 100yen respectively for one wash and dry. Also provides microwave in the same room […] where you can cook and use the utensils to eat. Provides free wi-fi for hotel guests. Hotel is easily accessible by the Ginza line subway (closest station is about 100m walk away, takes you to the main JR Yamanote line or you can walk to the Ueno terminal which is about 600m away). Can walk to Asakusa where you can visit the oldest temple in Japan or walk to the Sumida river and also Tokyo Skytree. All of these are within walking distance of the hotel, no more than 20mins walk. Overall, this is a great hotel for you to sleep and relax in if this is all you need. You can wash your laundry, you can cook basic food, surf the net, mix around and mingle with the other guests who hang around in the common area. Highly recommend this hotel. Read more

Great location and staff make this hotel more than you expect. There is a lot of information about local attractions, restaurants etc in the lobby which gives it a slightly hostel feel. We had a great night sleep. The kitchen would be a great feature of this hotel but we found that we couldn't use it because it was not in the best condition.
