Pestana Promenade Ocean Resort Hotel - Funchal

The hotel was very beautiful with well manicured grounds and pool area. An entrance to the promenade was helpful with a security gate. The breakfast room was very beautiful and food was good. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Wow! The Pestana Promenade is an awesome hotel. Great location with lots of neat little restaurants within walking distance. The buffet breakfast was great and the pools were fabulous.

Very clean rooms with excellent views over the ocean. Staff were very helpful. Only one very minor problem was the bedroom sink was blocked and wasn't fixed during our stay. We reported it on a Saturday afternoon and checked out on a Monday - so their maintenance department may have been off over the weekend. However, these things should be reported […] by a cleaner after the previous guests vacate the room - it was a pretty obvious blockage. Breakfast spread was good. Distance to Funchal is a longish walk (40mins) but plenty of nice local restaurants. You can usually find on street parking nearby although there is also hotel parking at an additional cost. We spent Christmas and new year here. The staff were extremely helpful ,polite and always with a natural friendly smile. This hotel was very clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were great. Plenty of choice from the Buffet. We ate at the The Deck poolside at lunch time twice and again a very good meal and very pleasant staff. I only have two small […] complaints. The first being the pillows. They were not 4* and our room on the first floor was the last but one and this meant the view from our balcony was of the spa below which obscured most of the sea view and you could only see the poolside if you were at an angle looking out. Not really a problem as I did not spend much time on the balcony but it would have been better if we had been a little more central. One thing I would like to mention is if you just ask you can have cups and a kettle brought to your room. Very handy if you like plenty of tea and coffee. Read more

Like the rest of the Pestana group this is an excellent hotel. the only draw back the the client-tel which is generally older people - absolutely nothing wrong with that BUT a large minoratory seem extremely intolerant to children, so if you are a family please be warned. My son was in tears twice for people shouting at him for swimming!

Beautiful and new hotel with nice large rooms all with sea view. We had access to the garden/pool area directly from the room on the ground floor. Staff at the reception were very helpful. Good breakfast. Easy to walk the 30 minutes to the centre of Funchal. Bus and taxis are right in front if needed.

Excellent modern hotel, apparently completed in 2009 - everything still nice and clean and fresh looking - only 'complaint' was the lack of thermostatic valves in the shower, unforgivable! Breakfast spread was more that adequate with a good selection of hot and cold. We did not try the restaurant in the evening as we wanted to sample the local establishments. […] Pool looked very inviting although we didn't take advantage as our trip was focused on exploring the island. We did have the opportunity to sample a massage in the spa which was nice. Location is fine, a short inexpensive bus ride from the very center of Funchal, although there are plenty of restaurants within 5 minutes walk, at least one of which is excellent (L'Osteria). Very good and well facilitated. The pools are magnificent and the staff very friendly. Make sure you get to do the happy hour for the cocktails as they are worth it. Don't believe all the timings they give you on the hotel info brochure as I think they are subject to seasons. Beds are very soft so may not be to everyone's comfort and the air conditioning […] is very loud if you need to have it on during the night. Reception can give you all the necessary information like bus stops, bus nos, timetables etc, some good local restaurants and how to get around in general. Great hotel - pool complex is lovely and very relaxing. Location is a couple of kilometres from centre of Funchal - easy enough to walk in and even easier to get the bus (the stop is very close to the hotel). Lots of good restaurants within a few minutes walk (including a great Indian one - Sabor da India) so no need to head to Funchal every night.

The staff weren't helpful on the few occasions we needed assistance and twice we had security issues with them. 1 - a cleaner left an open access card in our room whilst doing her rounds. I could have used it to get into any room I liked if I was that way inclined. 2 - we found our room unlocked one […] day whilst the cleaner was in the next room cleaning that one. Whilst that might be ok in some other locations, our room was 10 yards from the restaurant and the general public walking by. We've stayed in this hotel now 3 times in the past few years. The clean, modern style of the hotel is a nice change from some of the more dated hotels in Funchal, and gives a light, airy feel to the rooms and public areas. The location in the hotel zone is absolutely fine if you have a hire car (free on-street parking is never a problem), but slightly […] less convenient if you rely on public transport - though there is a bus stop nearby - as the walk to the Old Town is a good 40 minutes of so. There's a good selection of shops and restaurants in the immediate area near the hotel. We again had a large superior room (#1305), which had two large twin beds pushed together and a huge bathroom with separate corner bath and walk-in shower. The large balcony had a table and chairs as well as two sun loungers and had a great view down over the hotel pool and garden to the promenade and ocean just beyond. No tea/coffeee making facilities provided, so we brought our own travel kettle and bought supplies locally in the nearby Spar and Pingo Doce supermarkets. Our room also had a fridge and a modern TV with 50 channels including many UK ones (BBC, ITV, SKY etc.) and pay-view movies. Unfortunately the wi-fi charges are expensive and there are no free PCs available for guest use. Breakfast was of a good standard with a large buffet selection including cereals, fruit, cold meats, eggs, bacon etc. It's particularly good to be able to take breakfast outside on the deck overlooking the ocean - even during the winter season it's normally warm enough to do this due to the sunny micro-climate that exists over the bay of Funchal. The hotel staff are friendly and keen to resolve any problems that might arise - I've been impressed on several occasions by their professionalism. All in all, this hotel is great value for money and an excellent base in Madeira. We will certaily return again. Read more

I really couldn't fault this hotel. It is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The staff are helpful and smile a natural (not corporate) smile - they seem genuinely happy to be there. We had a beautiful room overlooking the pool and sea which I worried might be noisy but it wasn't at all. Breakfast was very good - something for everyone and plenty […] of it. The pool was deliciously warm and clean and there were more than enough sunbeds!!! The local area is quiet - out of the main town but the buses stop right outside (a number 1 or number 2 goes into the centre of town) and are frequent. There are a number of restarants nearby and LOTS in town. Try 'Arseio's' - delicious meat skewers with a Portugese serenade! and 'O Fort' - a bit pricier but simply mouthwatering. We had a 11 night stay at the Pestana Promenade and on levels it was fantastic! Madeira island is not for young and lively, the average age of holiday makers are pensioners, so if you want a relaxing time, to chill, exercise and holiday at a sloooow pace, Madeira is for There are many tours around the island, and some boat trips for fishing and dolphin […] watching which we didn't experience, so can not comment. The people are lovely on the island and very accommodatiing...Beware of timeshare sales in the hotels. They are not pushy but they make it known that they want to get you interested with cheap drinks and trips. The hotel is new and is about 10mins bus ride from the centre of Funchal, and about 20mins taxi from the airport. We had a 4th floor room, which was spacious with views over the pools and atlantic!! Spectacular. We had bed and breakfast, and the breakfasts were great. There are 3 pools and jaccuzzi. Plus indoor pool, jaccuzzi, steam room and spa. A gym and pool/reading/library room. There are different room sizes, the hotel is clean and modern, and is in my opinion the nicest of the pestana hotels on the island. The staff were all friendly and do anything to make your stay memorable. Even one of our cleaners was chatty and would do anything to ensure we had what we needed in our room, not just on the day we asked but everyday she worked...Exceptional. I would recommend this hotel, however not sure I would return to the island for another 30 years. . Read more

We stayed in Pestana Promenade in Funchal in July 2011. We really enjoyed our stay. Our room was clean and modern - and of course amazing views from the 6th floor! Breakfast was good. Service was great. Bar was quite quiet which was a shame - but I guess the families would be happy about that. The hotel was very much a mix of families, couples (older […] and younger). My only complaint was I was suprised that infants were allowed in the 'adult' pools with their nappies/diapers. Maybe that is not uncommon in Europe (I'm American) but I was surprised. After previous reviews we expected much better. Eating and drinking in the hotel is not cheap, better to eat out but restaurants are not much cheaper. Perennial problem of not enough sun loungers and the usual towels at dawn really irritating. Breakfast is not a problem if you eat between 7 & 8am. The food quality is pretty good. Pestana Promenade is an excellent hotel. It is farily new, beautifully designed and spotlessly clean. The staff could not be more friendly or helpful. Our room was very spacious, well furnished and had its own fridge. We had a balcony overlooking the sea. The gardens of the hotel are beautiful and the pool area fantastic. The breakfast choice was good and the food in the restaurants was also of a high standard, although we did eat out some nights in the many restaurants which are close to the hotel. There was a complimentary bottle of Madeira in the room on our arrival, and a nice touch for us was that the hotel's manager sent a card and bottle of champagne on ice (without any hint from us) up to the room on my husband's birthday which fell during our stay. The only slight criticism is that we found the beds to be very hard, but we understand that this is the norm in Madeira. Despite this we would recommend this hotel highly to others. Read more

Pestana Promenade has lovely rooms (most with balcony overlooking the sea), great swimming pools, friendly staff and a good breakfast buffet which you can take on the terrace. It's a long walk into Funchal but there is a regular bus service which stops outside. There are plenty of good local shops and restaurants.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Promenade in March. The hotel is lovely and the staff were extremely helpful at all times. Buffet breakfasts were great and with a good choice of hot and cold dishes. The hotel is a short walk from the bus stop into Funchal, so convenient for getting about. Plenty of sun-loungers and umbrellas by the pool, […] and the pool bar/snack bar had a variety of dishes for lunch.
