This is a privately owned old world hotel. I have stayed here before and always love to come back. If you are looking for a cookie cutter American style chain hotel this is definately not for you. It is perfectly located in back of Piazza del Popolo you can walk everywhere to see the sights. It is relatively quite, you are in center Rome. My last trip […] I had a standard double the room was large by Rome standards, clean I had a shower that was small but adeqaute most superior room come with a bath so they are larger. The furniture is antiques, not fine but add to the ambience, the bed was firm and comfortable. The breakfast was quite nice, assorted lunch meets, seasonal fruit, yogurts, house made chocolate cake and Proseco, italian champaigne, and assorted fresh juices. The location of the hotel is perfect and within walking distance of major sites as well as transportation. The staff were all very friendly and helpful as well. However I was highly disappointed overall. I paid a lot of money for a single room that was the size of a walkin closet and I didn't feel comfortable due to the lack of cleanliness. The hotel was in a great location to walk to many interesting sites. Just 2 blocks form the People's Plaza - Piazza del Popola. We had a great buffet breakfast each day - not just few sweet rolls, eggs, bacon, potatoes, bread, pastries, juices, milk, coffee the works. Our room was on the 3rd floor. The elevator was broke when we arrived but fixed by […] the next day. The a/c in our room was poor. They switched us to another room with slightly better a/c. Fortunately they gave us a fan which made it fine. Very nice place with roof top place to hang out and view the surrounding area. Lots of food places and shopping close by. Metro is only about 3 blocks away. Spanish steps about 10 minutes away. 5 minute walk to "hop-on-hop-off" bus stop. They also had free wi-fi that worked just fine. Staff very friendly and helpful. When we arrived we found out that we had been upgraded to a nicer room. That was great! What they don't tell you when you book is that the annex is across the street. No big deal. It was a clean, air conditioned room. They moved our luggage for us the next day which was great. Our upgraded room was pleasant enough...that is after people finally left […] the outside patio bar at 3am. Being right next to the outdoor patio dining/bar area seemed wonderful in the morning with the beautiful breakfast. But at night it is very noisy! Lots of loud people, foot traffic and slamming doors. In the bathroom the shower drain is level with the floor and always flooded the room. We had to use all our towels to make a dam. Overall was a good stay. Didn't see any movie stars though (as the in-room brochure promised). Oh well, we were in Rome and nothing could beat that. Traveling is always an adventure. Read more

Great stay for our family of 4. Not sure if we just got lucky, but we were given a 3 bedroom / 2 bath flat with a kitchen. Very local feel. Fabulous breakfast in quaint courtyard. Friendly staff, Rooftop terrace, Free bikes and near Borghese Gardens, a perfect plae to ride. Also near shopping and walking distance to many sites.

I ended up booking at the last minute and was able to get a reasonable rate. The room was nothing fancy but it was a value room. I got what I paid for. The room was a single but very clean. My biggest importance is the bathroom and the bathroom was clean. The breakfast was fabulous and the outside garden was nice to relax in.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I go on vacation I do NOT like to live worse than I do at home. This hotel is definitely NOT a 4-star. First off, the outside and lobby/courtyard area is charming but the rooms are DILAPIDATED (WORN DOWN). The bed was as old and worn as Rome itself! Also, the bathroom was ancient with loud squeaking pipes. […] Plus, there WASN'T any airconditioning eventhough it was 95 degrees (Fahrenheit) outside!! I was sweating on the tops of the sheets and it was disgusting. I felt like I was at summer camp!. Clearly, the best part of the hotel is it's LOCATION, but the rest of it is OVERRATED. Based on the photos and descriptions, I can say that Hotel Locarno was exactly what I had expected it to be -- and when you are shopping for a hotel that's a fantastic thing. The best feature was the outdoor courtyard and the breakfasts, included in our rate, provided there. There was an amazing buffet each morning with a wide variety of fresh pastries, […] produce, hot choices (eggs, sausage and potatoes, bacon). Once you are seated at a cafe table a waiter comes by and takes your coffee order -- they'll make anything you ask for. Eating beneath wisteria vines by flowing fountains is a wonderful way to start the day. The second best feature, as any map will tell you, is the location -- steps from the Piazza del Popolo on a wonderful, quiet side street with a couple of very nice restaurants. The hotel is so close to so many things but yet a couple of critical blocks removed from any kind of tourist chaos. The hotel staff was wonderfully helpful with anything we asked for, including the resetting of the internet routers which had to be done once. Our room, located across the street from the Locarno itself, was decorated in the eclectic art-deco style we had expected -- fun and festive. Personally, I could have done with a real shower instead of a tub with a hand-held spray fixture which you had to hold over your head -- but that could be my American preferences. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Excellent location for visiting the Vatican and Trevi fountain and other landmarks. We did have breakdown of air conditioning one day and the hotel moved us to the annex.

Well known hotel that is located within walking distance to almost all of Rome's highlights which is key in Rome because unless you have a scooter, walking is next best. The few times I needed a taxi was to Trastevere. Staff was very friendly and accommodating but we are a no-fuss couple. Room was small by US standards but is average by European standards […] as I've come to realize over the years to Europe. Housekeeping gets top marks. My room AC was struggling even tho weather was around the mid 70's. Bathroom needed repair tho. Housekeeping did have room looking spotless every time. Breakfast was actually very good and the cafe bar made the third best macchiato I've had in Rome. At night its a great aperitivo bar, lots of different artists show up. All in all the great staff makes up for lackluster room and the location is hard to beat at their prices. I used europeantransfer.com for my ride from airport to hotel. For about the same price as a taxi, a professional driver in a business suit waits for you holding your name card like a VIP. Driver patiently waited while I found a ATM and then helped us purchase some water when we said we were thirsty. Ride into Rome central in a comfy Mercedes-Benz E class. For a few euros more than a taxi I would do that every time, felt like a VIP. Read more

The good: the location and the hotel garden bar. The bad...room was old and outdated. The front desk staff were rude and don't know how to give proper directions. MAKE SURE that if you choose to book that you do not get a room in the annex. The annex is the hotel across the main hotel. My room was filled with bugs.

First 2 nights spent in a smelly room where the toilet was burping up sewer gas and the shower water gets everywhere on the floor without a drain. Don't get any rooms in the lower floors. nights 3 and 4 spent in a smaller room. This hotel is a real find: perfectly located and utterly charming. Is it superposh and ideal? Absolutely not. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and tasty but unexciting, there's nothing in the furniture (at least not in the room we stayed in) that you would call beautiful and the lighting is weird, and though the staff are largely helpful and efficient, […] there are the occasional weak points. But I don't want superposh and ideal. I want a hotel with some personality, where you're made to feel welcome on arrival and by day 3 you're a regular, where there's a cage elevator that makes you smile every time you see it, and where every respectful request is met with a respectful and cordial response. You're also three minutes away from the Piazza del Popolo, three minutes away from the wonderful Buca di Ripetta restaurant, three minutes from the river, and within walking distance of just about everything you could want to walk to. Plus the hotel will lend you a bike (they have a small fleet of them) to cut down your travel time. And Rome is immensely bikable. The Locarno, was an art nouveau haven in the most convenient part of Rome. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly in every way. The little garden courtyard is a little eden and I relished returning their from hectic sightseeing and enjoying the breakfast buffet every morning. I would highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is tired, rundown and dirty. The air conditioning was not working properly and it was impossible to even dry off after a shower. The room was small and dirty. There was mold on the bathroom walls and the floor was filthy. booked double room at locarno based on pictures and reviews. didn't noticed word "annex" in my reservation. that's a separate building across street with no reception desk or security. no internet there. wireless only works within 2 meters of router in garden/restaurant across street. i don't know condition of locarno rooms. my room in annex was relatively […] large by european standards. dated furniture and bath. one window shutter didn't open, was dark. bed was comfy. breakfast is mediocre. not too many choices. tolerable for a day or two. location is close to Piazza di Popolo on north end of tourist sites. you are close to some, but far from others. better stay 1km south near Trevi fountain. if you like walking then it's fine. walk to trevi about 15 min. colosseum about 45. add city tax, i think it was 2 euro per person per night collected in cash at checkout. figure about 30-45 min to airport by car. they have car service for 45 euro in july 2011. Though this hotel was one of the most expensive and highest rated (4 star) hotels we stayed in on our 10 day trip to Spain / Italy, it was by far our worst experience. Low-lights include bathroom smelled awfully of sewage, air conditioning did not work, mattress felt like a trampoline, and overall ambiance of room was bad (lime green walls with dim […] florescent lighting and very odd "antique" furniture). Also room was on first floor with view of side street any many loud trucks late night and early morning. i will say the hotel staff was very helpful and apologetic about our stay (especially the sewage smell which apparently is not common), but as they were fully booked we were not able to change rooms. they offered a discount to stay another night in the hotel when we returned to rome, but we decided even a discounted room was not worth it for the poor night's sleep we got there. we found many other 3 star and apartments / bed & breakfast establishments to be far superior in both quality and certainly in value. would not recommend this hotel. The Hotel Locarno is THE PLACE to stay. The location is at the Piazza del Popolo which is at "The Head" or the 3 main roads to tour Rome. We had traveled for over 12 hours and were just so tired and wanted to put the baby down to sleep. Also, the elevator wasn't working. Belle epoque is the theme here, and the place is jumping with stylish people. We stayed in the annex on the 3rd floor. This hotel was easy to find because of its proximity to the Piazza del Popolo with its large obelisk in its center. Rome was our last stop on our 3 week driving tour of southern Italy. Unlike some of the other cities and towns we visited, our GPS had no trouble directing us to the Hotel Locarno. It is located on a quiet little street just a block off of the Piazza di Popolo. A few blocks away is Via Il Corso for high-end shopping and 10 minutes walking brings you […] to the Spanish Steps. Traffic on the hotel's street was light, which allowed us to sleep in what can be a busy and noisy city. They do not have a restaurant, but the very attractive bar occupies two rooms indoors and one large area outdoors. They provide a variety of items to eat with your drinks in the evening. They also provide a light lunch at mid-day and it is where breakfast is served. The rooms are simple and on the small side, but adequate and totally modernized. One of my favorite things was the small cage elevator that probably goes back to the day the Hotel was new in the late 1800s. Rome is an expensive city. If money is not an object, there are several luxury hotels. But, the Hotel Locarno is reasonably priced and a decent value for the price. Read more
