Spent a wonderful night with my wife. In town to attend a party at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, which is literally within steps of the hotel. Our room had a spectacular view of Town Hall and quick access to the convention center. Staff went above and beyond to greet us, help us and make us feel comfortable. "Great facility, but expect faster customer service"
Facility The building itself was spectacular: stylish with historic significance and whimsy. I appreciated the thoughtfulness in having USB docking stations in the room. Customer Service Did not love that it took a while to check in; we stood in line for several minutes waiting for someone to get to us; this was not what I expected from such a high […] brow establishment. The customer service people were friendly and full of information, but would have preferred to be assisted sooner. Note that there seemed to be capacity for another staff person to assist with check in, but only one person at the desk. The elevator required you use your room key in order to operate, but the front desk person did not tell us this- so we stood inside the elevator, not moving, until we figured this out. No free wireless? Surprised that wireless was not included in the room free of charge – come on Meridien, you can do better than this- felt like I was being nickel and dimed after paying a decent price for the room. Other Needed to refrigerate some items, but no room in the fridge as it was stock full of beverages for purchase. When there is a fridge in the room, I expect to be able to use it for items I have brought. Somehow I missed that parking was not included in the room rate- so this added an unexpected expense. I've stayed in a variety of hotels at varying price levels through the years and never encountered a room cleanliness issue. Disappointing that such a high-end hotel fell through on that end. "Unsatisfactory response to issues"
The hip atmosphere, location and spacious rooms did not make up for the inadequate response when the hotel internet service was down for much of a day. As a business traveler, reliable internet service is essential to a satisfactory stay. After a day in meetings I planned an evening of email catching up and other work in preparation for the following […] day. When I was unable to log-in I called the front desk and was told that the internet had been down most of the day and the engineers were still working on it, but they had no guarantee that it would be fixed that night. I felt this was unacceptable and asked what they could do for me in terms of a discount on my room that night, since I would need to leave the hotel and find a cafe where I could work. Not ideal at 7 pm. The manager's response was that I could check out of the hotel and they would find me another, but they would not discount my room. I feel that this response was not satisfactory, and was also a calculated risk, since it was unlikely that I would select this option. There was a major event in the city, and the likelihood that I would find another hotel at a reasonable rate and be able to check-in in time to actually get anything done that night was minimal. This response compares unfavorably to my experiences at other high end hotels, where the management typically goes out of their way to make it up to a guest when something goes wrong. This was our 5 th visit to the "City of brotherly Love", and therefore tried 4 other hotels previously. We were placed on the 10th floor ,the room was bigger than my first 2 appts. "High Prices with Motel 8 Quality"
As a Hospitality consultant, this place was a filth hole. A dark dated and dirty Lobby Greet the guests with a dirty shower, sheets, towels, mirrors and sink top it off in the room. The room has cheap plastic cups and the amenities are so small I could barely wash my half bald head. The room had paper thin walls with connecting doors that rattle every […] time a door is opened. The cleaning staff will just walk in without knocking so lock the doors. The concierge was the front desk personnel. Polite but not trained to answer questions. The hotel was in a good location, close to the train and the major areas in Philly. They were all walkable distance, however the neighborhood didn't feel so safe after 10pm. "Location isn't a substitute for a dirty room"
There were hairs all over our room - the sink, the bedspread, the floor, the pillows - and it appeared to be a really shoddy cleaning job. The room was a tight space, barely enough room to walk on the other side of the bed next to the window and my wife and I had to contend with hitting our heads on a "mod"-style lamp. The bed was made with an ill-fitting […] flat sheet, not even a fitted blanket, and only had a bedspread for a cover - no sheets. The shower was nice, though, and the staff were fine. I'd give high points for the location, but that's more my contentment with Center City, not this hotel.
