I just returned from my stay at this hotel and I was beyond pleased. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The cleaning staff did a great job everyday cleaning and restocking the room. There is free wifi for 90 minutes a day or you can pay for unlimited wifi. The pool area is very big, well kept and fully staffed. They have games, activities and […] water aerobics during the day at the pool. Every night there is a show in a theater area which are very well choreographed performances. During our stay there was even a block party type festival in front of the hotel. We enjoyed the food at the buffet and tried all the restaurants except the Asian. The Tucan was trendy and the food was good, the Italian had the most delicious risotto and the Ocotal restaurant had really good filet mignon which was a special that night. Overall we had a great experience. I also highly recommend booking any tours through Tours Your Way. We booked online by recommendation before our trip and had the best time. They do private tours unlike the tours the hotel offers where you go in huge groups. We did the Mega Combo Tour- ziplining, horseback riding, hiked to the waterfalls, sauna, volanic mud baths, hot springs and a huge waterslide. Arriving to the hotel from the airport in Liberia was overwhelming and hot. In the airport all these people attack u to get u to take a taxi & then try to sell u tours right there and then. Once u arrive @ the Hotel its open air so its just hot & u dont cool down what so ever. Check in time is @ 3pm we got to the hotel@ 1:30pm & they didnt let us go […] to the room because "it was not ready", they gave us our bracelets & sent us to eat. Once we settled in the hotel staff was really nice and the room was a bit antiquated compared to other hotels I have been to. The room was nice & spacious but it had a musty odor to it & the bathroom was big with a double sink & a shower/bath tub. The only problem with the bathroom was the sewage smell after a couple of uses which was a gross. Besides the staff being really nice the downfall to this all inclusive is their stupid rule of having to make reservations for dinner in their "specialty" restaurants. Reservations have to be made early in the morning and many guest are lined up at a single table to make them. We were only able to reserve for one night so we were stuck eating the same food for a couple of nights. It just gets boring & tiresome after the first night to have the same things for dinner. another thing I found to be negative was the fact that dinner is from 6:30 to 9:30pm then after that no more food just crap in the 24hrs sport bar that sucks, smells like a gas station bathroom. entertainment super cheesy! Middle of nowhere in the Riu compound, anything you need is on site, but no culture. Reminded me of a Vegas hotel. Check in was uneventful-given a key and told about the buffet. Apparently they were having some sort of sewage issue (didn't bother to mention it until we asked) & the smell was traveling up through the toilet making it impossible to enjoy time in our room & causing me to gag everytime I entered the bathroom. The food looked nice, but was terrible. Barely ate for 2 days since we were in the middle of nowhere & had no other options. Couldn't try the reservation restaurants because staff didn't mention you had to go to the stage between certain times & there was NO info in the rooms about anything. Courtyard area was very loud at night so if you want to get some sleep you don't want a room with a view. Free internet in the lobby was down for at least 24 hours. Grounds were beautiful, pool was nice, beach was decent but not the best and was quite a walk down. A disappointing end to an amazing trip. The professional photographers are very good at capturing those great moments. The prints are a little pricey but great pictures. The nightly shows were amazing. Each night was better than the last. We did the Canopy tour (Ziplining) and the Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs tour. The Canopy tour was close by and it was thrilling. A must do. The Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs was an all day tour. It was a 3 hour drive there and back but it was beautiful. You get to see many animals and the scenery is exceptional. This has been an exceptional vacation. I highly recommend the Riu Guanacaste. I would have given all 5's but the front desk staff was rude and unwilling to listen. I paid for a suite overlooking the ocean and got it for a few hours. The first night the hot tub leaked and we were relocated to another suite only this one was located overlooking the pool. It was loud and loud music playing! Seems we were downgraded instead of updated […] for their plumbing issues. We asked several times to speak to a manger but he/she never showed up. Make sure you always use your do not disturb sign. We were walked in on several times and a couple of those time we were not dressed. We heard one faint knock and by the time we realized someone was walking in our room. Bring a pillow! Seem their idea of a pillow is 4 small throw pillows for a king size bed. Bring sun block. Resort cost $37.00. You can get things much cheaper by taking a water taxi to Coco Beach. They have a local grocery store and sell the same items at a reasonable price. The excursion such as zip line, horseback riding and tours were all rushed as if we were cattle. Did get the take many pictures on the zip line because you were rushed through too quickly. We were there two weeks in November 2012. I will definitely visit Costa Rica the people were amazing, but will look for another hotel. Read more

Smoking: all public areas incl. restaurants & bars, lobbies etc. were all non smoking. Numerous signs. Enforced very well in the dining areas, but not so much by the bars. Lots of work being done due to aftermath of earthquake, so understandably dusty. Overall they tried to maintain & keep everything clean. Did a very good job, except elevators, were very dirty. Saw the same pieces of paper & bottle tops for 4 days (on purpose did not pick it up just to see if housekeeping would as they used the same elevators as guests( should have a separate service elevator). Beach: nice but although it is a public beach I would have the hotel keep it cleaner, raking & picking up. Saw Playeros (beach cleaners) only a couple of times during our 7 day stay. Internet: at the sports bar the internet connection kept going down, lost about 40 minutes of my paid for time, but front desk was gracious to give us credits to use. Read more

The hotel is beautiful and yes the sand is black, it is volcanic in origin, but the water is still crystal clear and warm. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Our original room was on the side of the hotel that has construction going on next door, which was loud. The hotel has a photography staff but $13 for a 5x7 photo is a bit extreme and for the price of $400 you can get 10 pictures and a disc, again, just a crazy price. Also book your excursions on the beach. They will do whatever combination you want and the prices are much cheaper than in the hotel. We went on Quads to Ziplining one day and another day included a trip to a volcano in Costa RIca, where you ended your tour with a volcanic mud bath and lunch. If you book through Expedia, with transportation to the hotel, you are taken to the hotel in a private cab, not a tour bus. It was a nice, unexpected change. I would definetly go back. Read more

Riu Ganacaste exceeded our expectations for an all inclusive. All inclusives are what you make of it, and this place was great for us an active couple, but is also perfect for families with kids of all ages, young partiers, and the dozens of couples ages 70+ seemed to be enjoying themselves too. What you will find at this resort: Lovely open air lounge […] areas, some with Wifi connectivity. Bountiful and delicious coffee. A beach in a perfectly sheltered cove that is lovely to run or walk on& is a great beach for swimming. In the morning the ocean temperature is about 80 F degrees! FYI for ladies there was no conditioner, and the store on site was understandably pricey, so pack wisely. The food was fine and the hours were generous. I wouldn't bother making reservations at the restaruants, the buffet had table service for basic drinks. Focus mostly on local fare, fruit, and fish and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The cerviche on the weekend was supurb & the juices they have a breakfast were fantastic. I wish we would have brought more bug spray so we could have slept with the door open every night to wake up to the sun and the calls of howler monkeys. There is enterainment staff that make the pool a bit loud in the afternoon, but there are fun water sports that are a nice afternoon diversion. We stayed 7/30/12 to 8/3/12 after 2 nights at the Nayara in Arenal (romantic and amazing! 5-Star Paradise on Earth). This was meant to be our "beach" part of the week to get a tan and relax. The hotel is pretty far from everything. I guess some other areas are close to a town with restaurants and shops. We thought the hotel was impressive in it's size […] and quality. There are a few shops on the entrance road for souvenirs, etc. and there was a disco and small casino. The room was pretty basic (ocean view 2nd floor), but were not it it much. Since everything is tile here, it gets very loud at night in the halls when the drunken revelers come back from the disco that closes at 3am (oh, I remember the days!, oh well). The grounds were pretty and the pool and beach area were great. This was our first "all-inclusive" vacation stay and was just the two of us (no kids) and we are very health conscious/athletic, so didn't really take advantage of the endless alcohol and food available. The staff was friendly and helpful and even came out to the beach to ask if we wanted a drink. Even though it is a public beach, there are still tons of beach chairs, volleyball net, bottled water station staffed by hotel workers and third-party water sport rental people/massage staff available. I think that this is an excellent all-inclusive hotel and if you are into staying at the hotel and enjoying the pool/beach most of the time and like to drink and eat alot, then this is a great choice. I arrived at the our room.after check in and looked in the refrigerator, which is suppose to be stocked at this all inclusive hotel. It was empty. I called down to the front desk and was told that the people that stock the refrigerators are gone for the day and I would have to wait until the next day. I asked the person whyy they would check me into […] a room that is not ready and I told the person I payed for all inclusive but I guess they do not consider that the first day should be all-inclusive. She told me that this was not her problem and I would have to wait until tomorrow to have items in my refrigerator. Wi-Fi is not all inclusive at the RIU, you have to pay $15 a day. I payed it and throughout the day the Wi-Fi went down. I called down to the front desk who transferred me to 'their technical person". This person answered the phone and than put me on hold. If you are looking for a hotel to have a great pool party with lots of fun, don't look further than this one. If you are looking for a hotel with a tranquil scene, and incredible food, RIU isn't for you. Overall we found this hotel right up what we were looking for. We wanted to have fun, meet other people and hang out in a pool all week. That's exactly […] what this hotel provided. The quality of alcohol was on par for other all-inclusives. The food, I would say would be slightly below par, but we didn't pick the RIU for quality of eats. The hotel staff were incredible, and the grounds were very well manicured, with iguanas and lizards running around on the grounds. The hotel itself is set on the coast, in the jungle, where monkeys can actually be heard and seen from your room. There are no other hotels in the area so the beach is for RIU guests only. The multi level pool layout was very well done, and offered plenty of room for you to roam around if you didn't want to be close to the bar, which could get loud at times. If you are planning to do a tour, DO NOT go through the hotel. Instead go to the beach, and look for Vic from Vic Tours. Don't be fooled by impostors, Vic and his employees all have shirts that say "Vic Tours" on them. His tours are better priced than the ones offered by the hotel, and many times better and private. Instead of getting on a bus with 20 other people, you get in a small van that holds no more than 6 guests, for a private tour. Read more
