The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe - Truckee

The Ritz-Carlton at Northstar is a beautiful hotel. Our room was comfortable, if not very large, clean and well planned. There were a few things that were not perfect, like not having sleepers with the robes which we had to ask for, and the whining child next door that we could hear all night because of the connecting door, but what really bothered […] us was the quality of the matress which tended to be very lumpy and soft. Other than that service is worthy of the name Ritz Carlton and we appreciated the ski concierge that took care of our skis every day. Compared to other Ritz Carlton Hotels, this one is below average. The lobby wait staff was either overworked or simply unenthusiastic about being at work. The menu leaves much to be desired and the rooms are on par with an average business hotel. We've had much better experiences at other RC hotels and will not be going back to this one.

The hotel was very responsive when we checked in early. The staff was very kind and eager to accommodate me. It is located in an ideal location right on the slopes. You just grab your skis and get started, without having to wait in long lines for gondolas.The food at the restaurant is average, nothing to write home about.

This is truly a gem of a hotel in the north Tahoe area. It is a well maintained property that is staffed by friendly helpful people. Even if you don't ski, ere is still plenty to do at the resort. I am a hard grader but feel confident giving this hotel 5 stars.

Somehow the hotel charged an extra 1800 dollars to my debit card. They were unable to explain why there were 9 transactions put on my account. The Manzanita was a terrible experience. The food was sub par and the wait staff was not well trained. For example: our waiter did not know the portion size of the New York strip steak or the short ribs. On another […] note, the spa facilities are included in the price of the room. The spa has a gym, dry sauna, steam room, heated lap pool, hot tub, and 2 crazy showers where the water comes out of the walls and ceiling. Based on my experience at the hotel with the extra almost 2 grand in charges and the terrible meal at the Manzanita, I would not go back to this hotel nor would I recommend any one else go to this hotel. The two main areas where this hotel excels is customer service and location/views (proximity to the mountain, ski in/out). I have never had more attentive and friendly service at any hotel anywhere, including others in the chain. However, there are some weaknesses. The ski rental shop is too small, was overburdened and appeared unable to keep up with […] the demand for both days I was there. Some guests were visibly and audibly upset by the disorganization and lack of sufficient accommodation. The staff was always polite, however. Based on my experience, this hotel is not a suitable destination for couples or empty-nesters. This is really unfortunate because of the sophistication of the hotel itself. Virtually every guest was part of a large family with multiple young children. Note that the hotel is set up in such a way that the "lobby" is actually a restaurant with casual lounge seating spread around the area. For each of the days I was there, I was never able to find a seat anywhere, except once during the morning. More or less all of the seating was occupied by young children, and the entire floor was littered with food debris, french fries, children's sleds, etc. This situation may have to do with the excellent beginner skiing and ski-school opportunities here. However, it has undermined my assumption that the Ritz Carlton chain is a reliable destination for couples, relaxation, etc. The experience I had was much closer to a Disney resort. Read more

The facility and location are both great, but the quality of the service ranged from outstanding (servers at dinner in the Manzanita restaurant at the hotel) to awful (servers at other meals). Windows were so dirty in places that we couldn't see out. Music inside and outside the hotel was awful enough that we had to wear headphones.

This was the best get-away I have ever experienced! I was invited to sit by the fire with a glass of wine while the staff took my luggage to my room! I don't even remember checking in, that's how easy it all was! I relaxed by the fire, enjoyed the amazing scenery of snow covered hills and pine trees, then asked someone where to find my room. They know […] who I was and where I should go. The room was warm, had a beautiful fireplace and floor to ceiling views of the snowy mountains. The lobby bar was relaxed and easy - even for a woman traveling alone. I was free to be as involved or as "hermity" as I wanted. I want to go back! It even snowed overnight, "forcing" me to stay an extra day! I lounged the hotel, considered skiing, but then just took the gondola to Northstar Village for sushi instead. We stayed here over Thanksgiving to get out of the city and get some early season skiing in. The hotel is incredible, one of the better Ritz Carltons I have stayed at. Two things made the experience more enjoyable than a standard hotel stay: 1) The Ritz had ski and snowboard rental and ski-valet on-site, as well as lift ticket counters. We simply pulled […] up, got changed in our room, and one of us needed rental equipment so everything was incredibly convenient. The convenience of the parking, rental, lift tickets, equipment storage and of course, the ski-in / ski-out of the hotel made the price of the room that much more worth it. Anyone that has spent time at crowded ski resorts knows how frustrating that whole process can be and 2) the Thanksgiving buffet they offered (they apparently also do one on Christmas and New Years) was incredibly ornate and was as visually stunning as it was palatable. And as always, the service at the hotel was impeccable (almost to a fault - the ski-valets come out and greet you on the mountain and carry your equipment for you...I'm not THAT lazy) - the bartender even comped us a few drinks after a particularly tough college football rivalry game my team had lost, the rooms were very nice (the fireplaces in the room were a nice touch), and the main lobby/lounge area is a great way to spend a relaxing evening after a huge Thanksgiving dinner (they also serve food if you need a break from the slopes). The restaurant inside the hotel is also pretty good, as well, although we only ate their for breakfast. I only have one small gripe - our room had a lack of privacy because it faced directly onto the gondola, so there was a lot of time spent with shades drawn. May be worth upgrading to a "mountain view" if you can spare the expense. The price is the price, but I feel like you clearly get what you pay for. Read more

Our family just came back from a short ski trip to Northstar (3 days). We had previously stayed at the Village but this time we stay at the Ritz. We loved it !!! The staff was super attentive and I greatly enjoyed using the services of the Mountain Concierge. It's wonderful not having to carry all your equipment and ski in/out of the hotel. Stunning location and views the lodge is reminiscent of a retro Ski Chalet simimal to what you'd see in the movie the Shining. Great hotel and even better service. Their dining is good but pricey, but worth eating there at least one night. We told the front desk we were celebrating our sons birthday and they surprised us with a cookie treat. The hotel is off the beating path . Great family pool area. Unbelievable place! Supurb service. Accommodations were first class. The hotel was not full, so they had upgraded our room before we arrived. The beds were the most comfortable beds I'd ever slept in. We were there for a family wedding and the bride and groom were also given an upgrade to the nicest suite on the property. I had one complaint while I […] was there: the 'turndown' chocolate was stale the first night, and when I brought it to the front desk the next morning, they apologized. Later that day, I found a hand written note attached to a large gourmet chocolate bar, apologizing again, and hoping that I would enjoy the large bar. Now, that's service! This place just is not what I would consider Ritz quality. The beds are uncomfortable (and ours was broken). They nickle and dime you over everything. As though the room price isn't enough, they will tack on a resort fee, $35 for parking, etc etc etc. And the costly "upgrade" to a mountain view room will land you a room over the pool.

Great hotel, great service. Everyone treated us like royalty. We stayed on the Club level with a lounge area that provided buffet style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food was excellent. Ski lifts were right by the hotel which is an amazing convenience. We enjoyed the outdoor pool and hot tubs after skiing. It was like a winter paradise.

I've always enjoyed the Ritz Carlton hotel's, although, I usually stay on special occasions since the room rate is typically high. This property offers the best that the Ritz has to offer at about 1/2 the price (during off-season). Hotel is new, Staff is amazing and the beauty of the surrounding environment is breathtaking!
