Do not be mistaken: this is not a hotel, it is a dorm building for students that rents out empty rooms as apartments and claims to be a hotel. The bed is hard as a rock, the TV is in a common room on the first floor, the furniture is of the lowest quality and not comfortable, no A/C (but a ceiling fan). I stayed there for a music festival and a lot of others abandoned their room for more expensive rooms at other locations. If you are looking for a room that has a door that locks, this place may do. This is a perfectly good choice for the price. The location is very good, the convenience is good, there's even a spot to bring coffee and sit outside in the morning as well as a little convenience store right next door. The stopper in the sink didn't fit the sink drain. but the real problem is that there's no wifi. If I'd had a laptop, I'd have been able to plug in. But I had an iPhone and an iPad, so I couldn't use the internet at all. My favorite place to stay was booked, so I tried this and wasn't disappointed. With wifi, a stopper that stopped water and a kettle to boil water, it would be - all things considered - very near my first choice... Read more

I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to budget accommodations. However, my stay here was so uncomfortable I didn't sleep a wink the whole night! The building and room itself was fine, but there was NO A/C in the entire building! It was the middle of the summer and no warning that they had no a/c - just a ceiling fan. We opened the window and although […] this helped allow a warm breeze to come in, it was so loud outside (we were on the 2nd floor facing a large street) we eventually had to close it. Also, the mattress was covered in a hard plastic that made a loud noise every time you moved as if you were sleeping on a rectangle-shaped plastic beach ball. The sheets were clean but very thin so it provided no cushion from the mattress and could not mute the plastic rubbing noise either. (I slept on top of both sheets and didn't use the blanket but it didn't help.) The mattress was extremely firm so if you are sensitive to hard surfaces, don't sleep here - you feel like you're sleeping on top of a cardboard box. The fridge felt like it was barely working so it was pointless to keep food or beverages in it. Also, the shower "stall" was small, and the bath towels were miniscule and had a funny smell. No free coffee or tea or even vending machines, much less a light breakfast like at most hostels. When we checked out, no one asked us if everything was OK. Only good thing was the proximity to central bus station and metro stations. Not worth the rather steep price charged for 1 night! Read more

The 'hotel' is actually a college dorm, and there is nothing wrong with that. Our small room had its own bathroom with a tiny shower (some of the others were shared), a kitchen area, a double bed and a desk. However, the bed was really, really really hard, making it difficult to fall asleep. So if you have back problems, this isn't the place for you. […] Also, there wasn't a tv in the room which is fine by me since I was there to enjoy the city and the F1 races, but some people like having one. A lot of construction was going on during our stay (early June '11), plus our room was facing the street, so there was some noise from that. And even with the windows closed you couldn't drown the noise out complete. Not the 'hotel's' fault, but it's worth a mention. The staff is 'work-study' type students. However, they were really kind and tried their hardest to help you with whatever you needed- an iron, extra sheets, directions, towels etc. But, the towels are really thin, so if that bothers you, bring your own. It was a great location: about 2 blocks from the metro, china town, St. Catherine Street, and walking distance (20 mins) from downtown, the waterfront, and almost everything else. Despite the graffiti tagging many parts of the city, I never for a moment felt that my safety was in jeopardy. The police (who look really young btw) was everywhere that weekend, and the people were generally quite welcoming. For the price (again F1 weekend) it was definitely worth it! Read more

The mattress in my room was encased in a rubber bag. With only one fitted sheet it felt like sleeping on tarpaulin. It's also not fun when that one sheet comes loose in the middle of the night and you wake up with your face on the rubber mattress. I don't want to think about why there was a rubber mattress.

The staff is lovely. It is a university residence so don't expect mints on your pillow or anything fancy. We had a kitchenette but there were no pots, plates, cutlery etc etc so except for the fridge that we had to prop the door closed, it wasn't much use. We didn't bring pots or plates, who takes those to hotels? We were there for a weekend music festival […] at Jean Drapeau Parc so we were situated perfectly. Close to all the downtown fun spots and the metro. We had a wonderful time and the UQAM residence was perfect for our needs. We were there during a wicked heat wave so we did miss a/c and the ceiling fan did not cut it, but that is Mother Nature's doing. Read more

I was not satisfied at all with my stay since the temperature was around 32C and the room had no air conditioning. The thermometer in the room read over 35C so it was totally unbearable. The 4 days I stayed in the room there was no room service at all. There was numerous dust bunnies under the bed and the room was very small.

Now when I travel, a hotel room is essentially just a place to play my head at night, so as long as I'm relatively comfortable, This place had all the benefits of a hostel, namely the price, with all the benefits of a hotel, if not the refinement. I basically found it quite adequate, and I wouldn't really see myself justifying a stay anwhere else. Both […] the rooms and common areas were nicely designed and impeccably well kept. Some hostels you go to are rather grimey, but you could eat off the floor here. I've seen other reviews complain that it was institutional, but I can tell you, it was hardly a hospital ward. Unlike most hostels, you have your own good sized bedroom with wired internet, fridge, stove, closet space, and full bathroom, complete with complimentary towels. The bed might be a little hard for some people, but it was fine for me, I had no trouble sleeping in it. There is also no A/C on the premises, but once you are in your room, open the window, and turn on the ceiling fan, and you should be fine. I would say the weirdest thing about the room was the shower setup. The small shower stall only has two walls, so the shower nozzle points outward, stopped only by a heavyish magnetized curtain. This pretty much means you have a decent sized puddle of water on the floor after a shower. I found that this usually dried up within a couple hours. I enjoyed, my stay and I would recommend this place to everyone! Just make sure to take proof of reservation with you. Read more

The check-in process took a very long time, it took more than 30 minutes in a line-up. The residence is not air conditoned but there was a ceiling fan in my room. The entire building was clean and well taken care of. The staff were helpful. They seemed to be university kids working summer jobs. My floor was absolutely silent.
