Nice old fashioned hotel in the town center. Good bar and food excellent. I would stay again.

How very friendly and welcoming all the hotel staff were. Food was very good and having stayed in to many hotels and guest houses to count I can say this venue is well worth the time to visit. The owners were going on Holiday but still found time to make sure everything was OK.

The beds were not very comfortable - the mattresses seemed to be very old spring mattresses that were lumpy and dug into you when you were lying down. We did have a reasonable sleep but it was not the most comfortable. The hotel was the most expensive we stayed in so should have been better. The toilet seat was not attached to the seat on both sides […] so sitting on it was a bit precarious to sit on. The toilet flush was a bit temperamental. These things took the shine off the visit. On arrival we were greeted by a charming Gentleman by the name of Ben very courteous who booked us in and showed us to our room which was no 6. The room was traditional if somewhat worn with paint coming off the toilet wall and a grubby carpet but for one night we could live with that. We decided to eat in so went down to the bar which was great very […] friendly local’s and again Ben was a good host, the Guinness was good, not the best I have had but ok, my wife enjoyed her Stella. The Bar has pictures and jokes printed on all the walls and the ceiling which was fun to read. We had informed the Hotel we will be eating in so asked for the menu were we given both the Bar snacks and the restaurant menu and decided on my part for the Roast Beef and my Wife the Steak. Sadly the meal was poor my Beef was of the processed kind you buy in a cash and carry it was cut so thin and was tasteless the roast potatoes were deep fried and burnt. The veg was good however a very small portion. My wife’s Steak was burnt even though she requested Medium to well and the plate was so over filled with chips peas mushroom rings my wife was turned off before she had even started, too much on one plate. The steak again tasteless. The afters were again not homemade but cash and carry fare and jazzed up with squirty cream and the red wine was so cold we took it back to our room. Now I know the comment is why customers don’t inform the owners of any problems so it can be put right. Why should we! in service things should be right and when you pay £55 for a meal which in my experience was in the 2 for £20 mark you expect quality. In this case just wasn’t there. Back to the Room my single bed you could feel the springs of the mattress and all night there was a droning sound coming from outside, plus at just after 1am persons leaving the bar were shouting in the car park so not a good night’s sleep. Castle Hotel is an historic Inn in the centre of Downham Market. The staff are friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a bar meal in the evening and a superb cooked breakfast. The room was oddly shaped but the bed was comfortable enough. It is what it is - old and interesting (just like us).

Hotel was very well presented and clean all though the bathroom basin had dirty marks down the pedestal . The staff were very frindly and helpful. Overall a very nice hotel.
