"Not bad for price"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jan 20, 2013
For similar price to the George and The Riverside, this is a better bet although it is out of town. Main positive was one of the receptionists who was very helpful (gave me a heater as I was cold, found my welcome rewards number for me and linked 2 separate bookings so I didn't have to move room). However the other receptionist would only do the minimum she could get away with! 2 negatives for me: 1) the shower was a mixer tap so it was difficult to get a reasonable temperature. It was either boiling or freezing. 2) The restaurant was very cold despite all radiators being on.

The owners were very helpful and accommodating. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Good Breakfast. We weren't there long enough to really explore the neighborhood, but I didn't see any attractions nearby. According to the information in our room there were a few restaurants and stores nearby but I didn't see them.
"Olde world charm and comfort"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Dec 4, 2012
The Old Rectory is a gem. A beautiful house standing in pretty and well maintanined gardens. The weather during our stay (November) was not very nice but it made the open fires and warm bedrooms evenmore welcoming.Certainly worthy of another visit or two.
"A must for antique freaks..."Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 9, 2012
Small cosy guest house set in the middle of what is now an antiques centre. Set halfway between Chelmsford and Southend at the head of navigation on the River Crouch it is a quiet location in easy walking distance of one pub with excellent food and another even closer which I did not visit but used to be a favorite pub 30yrs ago. Good accommodation at the house with the option of full English breakfast, tea/coffee and biscuits in room and free parking. Good friendly service with the owner often dropping in for a chat at breakfast prior to opening up his antiques business in the village. Many if not all of the local buildings now contain antiques shops including the tall imposing mill building on the river bank which is home to many small businesses.

"Lovely setting and peaceful and very comfy bed!!"
We checked in and was greeted by a very friendly welcome and the breakfast was lovely and the setting was nice and quiet. We had a lovely weekend and would recommend our friends to stay there if they wanted a nice quiet weekend away from it all and wanted a nice authentic stay on a farm. The owners were friendly and breakfast was cooked to order and […] nothing was too much trouble, would stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fantastic Friendly Service"
We will definitely stay again when we need refuge in Essex! Why wouldn't we when the beds are very comfortable, the breakfast is delicious and there's no rush to check out because the room was required the following night. Thanks so much for a great stay, please say hello to all of the animals!Genuine Expedia guest review
