Dar al Bahar - Essaouira

At first we were quite pleased about the hotel compared to what we had originally booked. However, the sheets were quite damp and it was a bit uncomfortable. Besides that, everything was fine. But, what really changed our mind about the hotel and about the country in general was that the hotel ripped us off badly. We had asked them to help us book a […] car from Essaouira to Marrakech and the woman told us it would cost 70 dirham, a rate which was quoted as standard in our guidebook. At our previous hostel in Marrakech we had been scammed badly by our hostel (were charged 1200 dirham for the 70 dirham trip, not knowing it cost so little and stupidly trusting our hostel). We told this to the woman who quoted the 70 dirham. The next day the woman said we would directly pay for the cab to the hotel in our bill. When we went to leave we were in a hurry and we had the numbers owed to the hotel scratched roughly on a piece of paper. It was more than we were expecting but being in a hurry and being too trusting we paid it. Later when we looked the numbers over we were shocked and angry to find the woman had changed the price to 70 EUROS and converted it at an unfavourable rate, at that. Don't trust this hotel. Although seemingly nice, they will rip you off when presented with an opportunity. HOW RUDE. Would never go back. Read more

We really enjoyed our one night stay here. The riad is beautiful and the staff are everything you could ask for. Do try to have a room with a sea view and to enjoy your breakfast, or at least a drink, on the wonderful terrace. The breakfast was perfect.

Lovely, private riad close to the medina and ocean. Its views are fantastic from the terrace and some rooms also have ocean views. It was very well furnished, with lots of charm throughout. Venons d'y séjourner 2 nuits, en famille. Très bon accueil, personnel très sympathique et au petit soin. La décoration du riad et des chambres est typique et soignée, la propreté irréprochable, et la qualité des petits déjeuners est très correcte ! Le top, c'est de le prendre en terrasse, au 4ème étage du riad (très jolie déco blanche et bleue) avec […] vue sur la citadelle et ses remparts, où l'on domine l'océan et où les mouettes et cigognes viennent nous voir de plus près... Wir wohnten im 4-Raum-Appartement über 2 Etagen mit direktem Meerblick. Auf einer Etage lagen Küche und Salon, auf der anderen Etage Schlafzimmer und Bad. Beide Etagen waren über (sehr enge) Treppen verbunden. Alle Räume waren sehr klein und/oder sehr niedrig: absolut nix für Familien oder Menschen über 1.78 Körpergröße!!! Aber so ist das halt eben […] in einem authentisch renovierten alten Haus - gerade das macht ja auch den Charme aus! Alle Räume (auch Flure und Gemeinschaftsräume des Hauses) waren liebevoll dekoriert mit ausgewählten marokkanischen aber auch holländischen Objekten (Besitzerin ist Holländerin). Die Küche war relativ spartanisch eingerichtet, enthielt aber alles Nötige (Gläser, Wasserkocher, Besteck...) incl. eines großen Kühlschranks. Der Salon war gemütlich mit schönen marokkanischen Möbeln, mit schönen Lampen, die angenehmes Licht spendeten, mit TV und DVD-Player. Das Schlafzimmer war sehr niedrig und beengt enthielt aber außer einem großen Bett eine Kommode, ein Einbauregal, Musikanlage sowie eine kleine Auswahl an Büchern und Dekorationsobjekten. Das Frühstück war ausreichend und gut und wurde auf Wunsch auch auf der Dachterrasse mit traumhaftem Ausblick auf Meer und Ort serviert. Freundliches Personal, alles war in 1a Zustand und tippeditoppe sauber. Alle touristisch wichtigen Örtlichkeiten des schönen Städtchens (Hafen, Souks, Restos...) in Lauflage. Read more
