"Paradise in midst of mass chaos"
First and most important; make sure you set up a transfer with the riad -- run by a Frenchman who speaks perfect English -- from the airport or train station. You will NEVER find this place by yourself and you may find the experience a bit more harrowing than you'd like. The riad truly is an oasis in the midst of mass chaos. The place is absolutely […] beautiful and peaceful. You never hear much more than the birds chirping. Everything changes once you step outside. IF you want a real Marraskesh experience but a place to escape to for some R & R, this is your place. The staff is competent and efficient, but not warm and fuzzy. The hotel staffs are very helpful, breakfast was delicious and the riad is in the heart of Medina. People in the Medina are very friendly that make us feel safe and welcome.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hidden deep within the medina is this beautiful court yard hotel. Each of rooms is large and decorated with Moroccan details and French taste and large, spa-like bathrooms. The owner/manager is extremely helpful with everything from booking trips, ordering taxis, directions and even our need to puc\rchase a bottle of vodka.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A lovely hidden oasis down an unlikely alley way!"
Riad Karmela was exactly what we hoped. Very tastefully laid out, there are more sitting areas around every turn, so that although our room was rather dark on the ground floor we could sit just outside whenever we wanted. It is a very calm place with friendly and very helpful staff. We enjoyed coming back to the riad after days out and the tiny dipping […] pool on the roof terrace means that you can enjoy the sun and then cool off. Towels and loungers are provided. The fresh roses and lilies add to everything. A great place to investigate Marrakech from. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great ambience, helpful staff"
Our short stay in the hotel was pleasant and the helpful staff was ready to make an extra effort to make our stay as great an experience as possible.Genuine Expedia guest review
I did not care too much for the Medina in Marrakesh. Too many confusing streets filled with motorbikes that you have to avoid. However the riad definitely made up for it. Once you get inside, it was like a whole different world. The common areas were amazing and lovely to just sit in, and breakfast each morning was something great to look forward to. […] The staff were especially friendly, and were very helpful in giving us directions and arranging daytrips out to the Atlas mountains and to Essaouira (both of which were terrific). Very highly recommended. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice and peaceful hotel near the medina"
The hotel is very near to the medina and it would be wise to take the transfer option from airport which is the most stress free option to get to the hotel. We had a most wonderful stay though we had to change room after the first evening. Joel who runs the riad was wonderful in addressing our problems and was most helpful in providing us with a room […] to rest in on our last day after checkout as my daughter had an upset tummy. Would certainly stay again if visiting Marrakech. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Riad in the heart of the Medina"
A great comfortable riad right in the heart of the Medina. Don't be daunted by it's location...you'll soon get to know your way around...and the Riad staff are very helpful. "Excellent Riad style hotel, ideal location."
Excellent Riad style hotel, this hotel is located in the old Medina part of this city. You will have to walk through the alley ways to reach the hotel, however, the locals are very welcoming and helpful. It is a very good experience. Please you donot need to catch taxi if you stay in this hotel, everything is short walking distance. The alleys with […] narrow streets have shops on the way to the hotel, and a veg/fruit market, it is a great location, only 5 mins walk into the main square. The hotel staff are excellent very welcoming and extremely helpful, you will feel at home. This hotel and the location is highly recommended. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Look out for the two toytoises, there are also beautiful fruit trees, and excellent several comfortable seating lounges. The balcony is very comfortable, with several different seating areas again with excellent plants and shaded area. Don't forget to go on the opentop bus ride and the horse cart rides available from the square. Anything you buy, offer the the price at 50% less then the asking price, if they say no then walk away and they will follow you to accept your price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We stayed at this Riad after 7 days in the high Atlas so were very happy to be there in comfort after roughing it for a week. This is a very nice place, the photos are accurate and do it justice. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is good too. The location is excellent, hidden away as it is in the back alleys, and it is a short walk to […] the souks and only a slightly longer one to the Jamaa el Fna square. Be warned however that there is a venue next door that caters for local weddings and the Moroccans know how to party! We were kept up with loud music until 4am one Friday night which wasn't a great experience. The hotel moved us to another room and thankfully there wasn't a repeat on the next night. "Authentic Morrocan hotel"
The Riad Karmela is very authentic set right in the middle of the bustling Medina it is like an oasis of calm. We would advise taking the transfer from the airport as you really wouldn't find the Riad if it were your first visit to Marrakech. We were tickled with the two tortoise ambling round the central courtyard, which to us seemed more like a sitting […] room than an outside space, tempted also to pick oranges from the trees there. We were a little disappointed by our room, we had booked a superior room but it was very basic, dark and quite small, also as it was located on the ground floor we often found other guests would sit on the sofas right outside our windows meaning it didn't feel very private. Despite the hotel advertising the rooms as having complimentary wifi it didn't actually reach that far so we would usually have to go to the main courtyard to pick up messages. there was no music, radio or TV in the room and as we couldn't pick up radio via the internet it did make it very quiet in the room, it would have been nice to have had something to play music on. Our first night we ate dinner in the Riad - chicken tagine which was very good and it was nice to be able to relax without having to go straight out, having arrived late. Breakfast was very simple but lovely, served up on the roof terraces from where the views were spectacular. All the staff were friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English or French. We would definately stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect for all"
Situated in the heart of the Medina, you cannot go wrong with the Riad Karmela. The whole ambience of the riad is beautiful, and i have never felt so relaxed than while sitting in the courtyard drinking amazing mint tea! The rooms are simple but full of character, and i was very pleased to have a decent strong shower! The breakfast in the morning is […] a little basic, but it does come with the best orange juice i have ever tasted! The staff are extremely helpful and polite. Most importantly they know the area so well and make it very easy for you to enjoy yourself amongst the hustle and bustle of marrakech! I will definitely be returning to the Riad Karmela. "An oasis of peace in a mad city, great stay!!"
Our stay in this riad was brilliant from beginning to end. The taxi (booked in the UK through Expedia) could not get within 400m of the Riad as it is situate in the heart of the Medina. The owner organises for a young man to meet the taxi and then guide us and carry our luggage to the riad. We arrived at 8.30pm and were greeted with mint tea and we […] decided to accept the set meal which was on offer and was very welcome. The approach to the riad must be off putting to timid guests but we loved the contrast of the tranquility of the riad with the hustle and bustle of the surrounding passageways and the souk. Some of the decor and fittings in the bathroom were a little tired but it certainly didn't detract from the holiday particularly as the stay was competitively priced. Breakfast was buffet style with fresh orange juice, fresh fruit, pancakes, cereal, cold omelette, breads, jams and my favourites, fresh doughnuts. The owners were really helpful and the staff attentive. When our final invoice are arrived we discovered that our regular mint teas were complimentary. The attitude of the staff and owners was in complete contrast to the majority of the street traders who can make the customers feel uncomfortable. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"An oasis of calm."
An Oasis of calm in the heart of the Old Town of Medina within Marrackech. A variety of rooms and suites situated around courtyards, benefitting from natural light but also sheltered from the heat of the sun. Joel leads an excellent team of staff who do all they can to make your stay memorable. Breakfast to suit Continental Europeans and Brits alike. The […] roof terraces offer the opportunity to sunbathe even in the winter. Top tip is to accept the offer of an airport transfer, Medina/ Marrakech is a rabbit warren of lanes and alleyways and taxis/ cars cannot access the last 75 metres to the Riad. I would recommend to friends and stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very traditional, good quiet location"
Good quiet location, beautiful setting, very traditional. Tortoises very cute! Only downside would be the restaurant they recommended we try - it wasn't great. Staff helpful though, and we would definitely stay there again if we return to MarrakechGenuine Expedia guest review
Made reservation here with my wife and kids and father in law. Both wife and Father in law are Moroccan. Was a sketchy part of town and both were afraid for us to stay there with kids given we seemed to need a security escort in and out. I asked for a refund for my 5 days and was given half back. To add insult to injury the "security" guys who walked […] us back to our car wanted tips for doing so despite our having paid the hotel hundreds of euro for not staying there. "AVOID, much nicer less expensive riads around"
Terrible hotel expensive, glad we only booked 3 nights. Very stressful and not enjoyable! The manager was very rude and dismissive when we had an issue with one of the guides and when we complained about the overall quality of the room. He screamed at my friend, a young lady, something we have never experianced after travelling to many world wide desinations. […] The room itself wasn't very clean, there was alot of dust and the previous guest's rubbish still left in the room. After notifying the staff a couple of times about the cold shower nothing was done and we were never updated just ignored. The registration process was not very useful or in depth enough, the person who did this was not very warm or friendly, this was the case with most of the staff there who spoke about us and other guests behind their backs and were constanly laughing or making fun of us because they thought we did not understand the language. Not professional at all! For the price we paid, this was very expensive for a bad experience. The staff and manager did not introduce themselves to us and the whole time we were there we feeling like an inconvienance and were given little attention. The riad itself although nicely furnished inside, was not in a safe area, lots of beggars and traffic ouside, busy street with mopeds whizzing around. However the riad didn't feel that much calmer or safer inside! Food also very basic and dinner extremely expensive for what it was. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely riad and good value"
Delightful riad that is conveniently located near the medina. It's a peaceful oasis with beautifully presented communal areas and rooms. Nice roof terrace. Great staff who are very helpful. The Karmela is in a great central position 5 mins walk from the souks and 10 mins to the Djeema el Fna (main square). It totally lived up to the reviews on expedia which made us choose it. A welcoming oasis in the hub of the medina. Our room was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Good breakfast with lots of choice taken in the courtyard amongst the […] orange trees, tortoises and sparrows. Joel and his team made us feel very welcome and were a great source of local knowledge. The riad was well maintained with lovely interior decor and the view of the snow-capped Atlas mountains from the roof terrace made it a very memorable stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Riad karmela is a perfect oasis in the heart of the medina. Situated just a 2 minute walk from the souks and 7 mins from Jamaa el Fna it is perfect for sightseeing. However at night make sure you plan your route as it can be easy to get lost if you don't stick to the main routes. All of the staff are very helpful and on arrival Joel gave us a map of […] the medina recommending the best routes to walk and the best restaurants to eat at. We also had a hammam at the riad which I would thorougly recommend - followed by a massage. If you want to spend a day out of the city the riad provide excursions and if enough guests arent interested in going then they will book you in through an agency to make it cheaper. This is what we did and we spent a fantastic day at the ourika valley. Marrakesh is a crazy and overwhelming place that has to be seen to be believed but at the end of a dusty and tiring day bartering in the souks this riad is the perfect place to come back to. This was our first Marrakech trip and we chose well with Riad Karmela. It was an oasis of calm and tranquility from the madness of the medina. "Raid Karmella - Larger than I expected"
Compared to most, this is a very large riad. It's design is nice and the rooms are impressive. The hotel staff are helpful and speak English however the map of Marrakech they provide is pretty poor so you are better of getting a good one elsewhere. And believe me you will need a map for this city. The breakfast was good enough to fill your stomach […] but was too continental. I have had Moroccon breakfasts elsewhere which are more filling. Request a room that is not on the bottom floor as these get noisy from chatter inside the hotel.
