"Spend your big bucks more wisely"
01/20/14 alan c New Haven, Connecticut
At first blush I was pretty impressed with our "cottage". Accommodations are composed of several theme cottages. Our's was the artists cottage. Architecturally, the property is very interesting because each cottage is designed by a different architect. Unfortunately, that is where the excellence ends. My wife and I found the food to be pretentious but mediocre...especially breakfast. The thing that really bothered me was the extra charge for delivering our dinner to the cottage because the dining room was closed for a wedding. For the huge bucks they charge, I thought it was pretty tacky to add a surcharge. There are other top of the line places for less, giving their guests more. Mayflower Inn and Twin Farms are two suggestions. We've stayed at both places and Twin Farms still get the gold star for excellence. I'm not saying that we didn't enjoy our stay. We did. It was just that for the incredibly expensive weekend I know we could have done a lot better.

My BF and I spent one night here (we wish we could had stayed two) in the middle of november 2013. We're from NYC and didn't think there would be enough to do to keep us entertained for two night three days but were totally wrong and wished we would have booked that additional night! When we first arrived to check in we were given general info about the property and then were led to our cottage. they even came inside to show us how things work ... (such as TV, Heated floors, Surround sound, etc) It was extremely helpful and made it easy for us to do basic things. We stayed at the Golf cottage... It was amazing. This is such a treat especially if you are a golfer. we really enjoyed the old fashion putters and golf balls in the room and the carpet was shaped like different putting greens so you could hit the balls around. The bathroom was my favorite.. it was huge with a jet tub and extremely well maintained (as was the entire cottage). My BF loved the TV that in fact raised from the foot of the bed.. haha. Spa was fantastic.. we did the couples hot stone massage and both felt great after. It was performed in what I think was the couples room.. It had a great fireplace but unfortunately towards the second half of our treatment the fire started making VERY loud crackling noises. I really know nothing about fires or how long they are supposed to last but we both agreed that it really took away from the "relaxation" aspect or our treatments.... but I guess that's nature? I highly recommend to request no fire during your treatment (ours was 80 minutes) because it was just so darn loud lol! I guess it's normal because our masseuses did not say anything. We did have about 20 minutes to enjoy some snacks and drinks at the end of our treatments which we did enjoy glancing at the fire for. BF was upset that were wasn't a steam room.. but there was a very small co-ed sauna. Restaurant was good. everyone was really nice. I did wish they had a few more options though... They didn't have a chicken or steak option the night we stayed there.. I believe from what I remember they only had animals like duck and possibly deer... not my thing. hopefully the menu has changed to accommodate . I did enjoy our dessert very very much!!! this was literally the quietest place in the world by the way. Overall great experience and plenty to do !!!
"Changed my mind about surprises"
11/14/13 cmh1113 New York City, New York
My daughers arranged for a car to pick me up at work for a very secretive surprise for my birthday. I had no idea where I was going or what I was in for - and I don't like surprises. A little tense, I chatted with my driver - and I am not a chatter or enjoy being in the back seat - except for NYC taxis... Well, as soon as we pulled into Winvian I started to unwind. The property is beautiful - and not in a formal or pretentious way! Checking in at reception rather than the Spa, they happily greeted me, and knowing about my special day, directed me along a beautiful walkway to the Spa. I had an incredible spa experience - with special attention given to my tight neck and back. I ordinarily don't like a lot of fuss - but I was caving in to the experience - and totally caved when they informed me my surprise included a spa lunch. In the beautiful, serene Spa space, I was served a farm-fresh green salad and cheese plate, along with a half-bottle of a wonderful Sancerre. The cheese selection was world-class. Totally relaxed from my treatments, I thoroughly enjoyed and lingered over my lunch. I felt like I was a million miles from work. Unfortunately, and cruelly, the driver was there to bring me back. A day later, I still feel the relaxative and therapeutic effects of my short time at Winvian. I will plan another visit soon, and bring my beautiful and thoughtful daughters with me! We hope to explore more Winvian. The apple tart with birthday candle was so delicious and special, too!
"Just didn't seem to flow well"

We have stayed at the sister property (Pitcher Inn, Vermont), and have always loved it. Unfortunately, Winvian just didn't seem to flow well. Reception was friendly, but the reception area is part of the bar which is part of the game room, and just not a comfortable area. The room we stayed in (Stable), was nice enough, but wasn't overly comfortable (3 flights of stairs made the room very disjointed). The restaurant is reviewed separately for dinner (good, but not great), however the breakfasts were excellent, different, and well prepared in a very comfortable little breakfast room. The grounds are well maintained and the location is very nice. I guess the hotel was just to "whimsical" for our tastes. The adherence to the theme distracted from the comfort and flow of the property. I think the focus on the property being an architectural art piece distracted as a first priority distracted from the comfort. We would have loved to tour all the rooms just to see them! I think this will all come down to what you are looking for. If staying in a treehouse or a room with a giant helicopter in it appeals, than I think you probably will find Winvian 5 stars. If you were looking for a cozy country inn, you might agree with the 4 rating. Cost is high, as you'd expect from R&C, but nothing outlandish.
"Still a special place but maybe a little deterioation in service levels"

We stayed at Winvian 5 years ago for a birthday weekend and it was fantastic. We were in the CT Yankee cottage and food, accommodation and service were all excellent. We were back with a group this weekend and CT Yankee, Helicopter and Charter Oak cottages. Accomodation continues to be excellent and Helicopter is a lot of fun. Food was outstanding as well with both dinner and breakfast very high quality. The only deterioration from last visit was service level. Breakfast on Saturday was a little chaotic. When you have to ask for stuff (coffee, juice, more bread, etc) it felt like they weren't paying attention to you. Also in Charter Oak we were using a pull out bed. On the Friday night they pulled it out and made it up but not on the Saturday night. We got back to the cottage late, so one of our party just curled up on the sofa without pulling it out. On the upside concierge service was excellent as was the Spa. Still a great weekend but spoiled a little by a few small service issues

It was nothing short of AMAZING! We stayed in the Secret Society room. It was very much like it's name. The bedroom was up stairs and the roof was all glass, so your greeted each morning with birds and beautiful greenery. The bathroom was all marble with a rainfall/amazon feel. We didn't eat on premises. We ventured out for food and always bought something back. I went jogging on the grounds to check out the surrounding houses which left me in awe, due to the complexities of the architecture. The pond was a serene atmosphere where I chose to read and skip rocks. My next stop is either the treehouse, music, or artist. It was worth every penny and I cannot WAIT to return.

This is a really unusual place with quirky delightful cottages each on a different theme. The cottages are very well appointed with great attention to detail. I would have rated this as excellent but for a couple of points. It was a hot weekend but we did not find any comfortable outside seating areas. Fresh produce was limited to either what the hotel grew or sourced from local farms and this meant that there was very little fresh fruit other than plums at the time of our visit.

WOrth every cent, and it cost many cents. The service and the food are the best best best we have ever encountered. It's like a trip to Europe, high end and very worth it. We loved it... We stayed in the Music Cottage, very bright and fun, and loved the fireplace that opens to LR and BR. We read by the fire and even brought our dog, cuz he's small and doesn't shed and is very well trained. They charged $70 or so for our dog. WOrth it. We loved the bikes with big comfy seats and we enjoyed going to two wineries in the area to do a wine tasting. What an amazing retreat, the table foods all had elements from their farm and meat was so fresh, wines were amazing, and the smiling happy waiters and waitresses who knew how to impart top level service made it all a dream come true. "Pure, Serene Bliss"

This is a spectacular property, and the team working here makes sure you perfectly taken care of! I have had the pleasure of staying here twice in the past month. On both trips, we stayed in The Stable, which is one of the private cottages on the property. With the exception of one suite in the main house, all of the "rooms" are private cottages, each designed by a different architect. The property itself is a sleepy, quiet country haven. There is a beautiful garden in the center of the property in which you can watch the chefs gathering fresh picked offerings for meals. Our cottage, The Stable had a horse theme. It was a three story structure with soaring ceilings and an open air feeling. The main entrance leads down a hall, and on the right is a three story wall of windows with a view to a lush forest. There is a fireplace and small kitchen set-up and some couches. The next level down is the bed, which is piled with sumptuous pillows and sheets. The bed looks out the two-story wall of windows and three glass doors which lead to a small slate patio. The shades go up and down automatically. It is heaven to sit in bed in the morning with a cup of perfect coffee (from the deluxe coffee maker in the room), lift the shades at the touch of a button and watch the sun on the trees. We even watched a family of wild turkeys march across one morning! The lower level is all about the bathroom. There is deep bathtub with jets that is surrounded by glass walls. There is also a steam shower (also all glass). Again, it is such a treat to soak in the tub with a glass of champagne and watch the beauty of the trees and meadow all around! Each of the cottages come with sweet touring bicycles and we meandered around the property on our bikes. We also had massages at the spa. I can not rave enough about the spa space (serene and architecturally stunning). I also had one of the best massages of my life with Jaylynn (not sure of the spelling of her name, but she is amazing!). I did the massage where she actually uses her feet as part of the massage! It was truly perfect and she is great. Dinner was delicious. On our most recent visit we had a tasting menu. Simple dishes with lots of obvious farm to table touches made for a delightful meal. Breakfast is included and is not to be missed. The scrambled eggs are pure, fluffy perfection. One visit we ate in the dining room, on our second stay, we requested room service. Both are wonderful, albeit different, experiences. On our last visit we got to see a few of the other cottages and The Library was among my top choices for a return visit. It seems like it would be incredibly cozy for the colder months with a large fireplace you can see from the bed! This is a special, special property, made all the more special by the incredible staff. Every person we met went out of his or her way to accommodate any request and did so with a smile. I am not usually to quiet, country inn type, but Winvian is so much more than that. It is truly an incredible spot to go and re-charge, relax and indulge. I highly, highly recommend it!
