An excelent place....going slightly off the beaten paths permits a rare down home Beijing experience. I stayed here for two nights and enjoyed it very much. It's great value for your money. The staff is incredibly friendly, and many speak excellent English. The rooms are not only clean but charming. It's romantic and quaint. We've already come back. A quaint little hotel offering very good service at a very reasonable room rate. The Emperor's Suite was worth the extra money and a lot of fun. The breakfasts were fine and the staff were able to organise tours for us that were good value. The bed was comfortable and the room had good amenities including a computer and wireless internet. There is a bit of travel required to get to the main tourist areas as Michael's House is in the north of a very large city. I liked the description of this place and it proved to be just as nice - clean, quiet and tastefully decorated ... with most helpful staff! It is down an alley in a real Beijing neighbourhood - children going to school, senior citizens sitting around chatting, shops doing business ... and in the evening the air is fragrant with cooking smells and people […] sit on little benches and eat delicious street food. Michael's House is just that - a private house with a large courtyard (covered on top with cloth to stop dust etc getting in and ensuring privacy from the high rise buildings that have come up around). The rooms all open up on to the courtyard and mine was a bit dark inside since it had no other windows - but this was fine in the summer heat. The staff are most friendly and charming and perhaps the best part of staying here was chatting with them (in English) and getting help with doing whatever I wanted to do (including a haircut at the local barber). The breakfast is substantial - mainly western but with occasional chinese touches, and there are cheap restaurants down the street (with English menu). I have stayed in Beijing before - in 4- and 5-star bland and antiseptic hotels surrounded by shopping malls which gave me no flavour at all of the city. This is an unusual place, being a converted house. The central courtyard has a glass ceiling, and is where reception, and a communal lounge is located. It is also where breakfast is served. All the rooms are off that courtyard, but you do not hear any noise. The service in the hotel was excellent, with all the staff being able to speak English. A very nice little hotel. It has a really nice feel to it, the beds are realy comfortable and big. The staff are friendly and speak good english and help you when needed. We did find that the hotel was not the easiest to find and the taxis took a little to find it . Make sure you have the address in Chinese. What a wonderful hotel in a wonderful location! The care and consideration of staff is outstanding. This delightful courtyard hotel is an experience I am glad to have had, I thought I might feel stifled but this was not the case. The only thing I missed was being able to make a hot drink whenever I wished, the room did not have an electric jug/kettle. I think I need to have a mug and a mini water […] heater the next time I go to China. I will certainly return to Michael's Place Beijing. One suggestion, please could they put the name and address in Chinese characters for people who book in. It is very hard to find an address in Beijing without the Chinese characters. 我們住的是標準房,房間不大,設備還算齊全,也很乾淨,飯店是四合院改建,但是飯店內裝比較偏西洋風,服務還OK,室內比較不通風,暖氣也不夠暖,距離地鐵約10分鐘路程,尚可接受,巷子一出來就是小吃街,不怕餓肚子,推薦巷口的麻辣燙,老闆人超好的,不過跟前幾天住的四合賓館比較起來,沒有提供腳踏車租借跟免費機場接送,是我覺得比較可惜的地方,住宿的人以外國人居多,華人較少.整體來說價格偏高,CP值較低.
