it was a very good experience. Bob & Bonnie rented out their cottage, which sort of like airbnb style except we had the entire house for ourselves.

"Very nice cottage near Volcano Nat. Park"
The cottage is very cozy with everything you would ever need for breakfast or a quick lunch. You were so near an active volcano, you though you could feel the heat. Five minutes from the Park entrance. At night you are only ten minutes from watching the glow of the volcano.

"Nice folks"
Pleasant stay. I enjoyed listening to the rain on the cabin roof overnight. It was a great location near Volcano National Park. Good advice on our arrival - to go see the lava glow that we would've ohterwose missed. They were accommodating of our two children and even brought over homemade cookies! If you're looking for resort or business-class chain hotel, this is not for you. if you're looking to hike around the volcanoes, see some cool art, and stay in more comfortable accommodations than a national park with the rest of your family, this fits the bill nicely.

"Cute cottage in a good location"
We enjoyed our stay at the Artist Cottage. Good location - close to Hilo, VERY close to the Volcano Nat. Park, and 2 hours drive to Kona (with lots to see on the way!). If you are a clean freak, this is probably not the place for you. It's like staying in someone's house, which is different than a generic hotel room. It is neat and clean, as long as you don't look in all the nooks and crannies! All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here! Lovely location, extra amenities like slippers, bathrobes, refrigerator stocked with breakfast foods, and the gas fireplace was much appreciated too!

"Great Experience Near Volcano National Park"
After more than a week in hotels having an actual cottage with a fully stocked kitchen and spacious bathroom was such a relief. It's very convenient to Hawaii Volcano National Park and the town of Volcano. The owners, Bob and Bonnie, were extremely welcoming and warm. There's free WiFi and a washer dryer, which was a lifesaver. All toiletries that you either forgot to take or couldn't take. The kitchen has every type of breakfast imaginable, including cereals, eggs, fresh fruit, milk, coffee, tea, orange juice. This area of Hawaii can be cold and rainy. The Cottage has an assortment of sweaters and jackets to borrow. Don't buy any supplies before you see the place. It's probably already there.

"Very Pleasant Stay"
My Daughter and I thought we were staying in a hotel with a cute name ''Artist Cottage'' it turned out it's a very nice cottage, very clean, with everything you need(food, drinks, coffee, nice music, fire place etc). Very close to the Volcano National Park and very very peaceful. They also have a carport which it was very convenient . It felt like we were staying at a friend's home. We were very Happy! Perfect! Boni was very nice. Thank you!

"Charming cottage and hosts!"
We stayed for two night, would have enjoyed another week. Bonnie and Bob were perfect hosts, close enough to contact if we needed them but left us our privacy. The cottage is lovely with everything you could imagine to care for ourselves before and after our daily adventures. It's very close to Volcanos National Park and several good restaurants. Blissfully quiet and peaceful!

"Which "Artist Cottages? ""
Greeted by a friendly hostess who explained everything and pointed out the abundance of food stocked we knew immediately we could not stay there so left to find new accommodations. Volcano is not an easy place to navigate. Hard street locations, no lighting and a somewhat isolated housing pattern all contribute.

"A Little Paradise Near Volcanos National Park"
The Artist Cottage is a lovely oasis near Volcano National Park. True to it's name, it's artfully decorated, warm, clean, and comfortable, and grounds are nicely landscaped. Great front porch. Well stocked provisions for any sort of breakfast you desire. Hosts Bob and Bonnie were very attentive to our needs and provided great advise for activities, restaurants, and sites in the Park and elsewhere on the Big Island. Highly recommended!

"Quaint, Cozy, Well-appointed Cottage"
We arrived to lights lit, slippers waiting, and a lovely banana leaf welcome note. The bed was already made up for our two kids. Our hostess arrived shortly afterwards, and was delightfully friendly and welcoming, wanting to make sure we had everything we needed. The cottage had all kinds of drinks, breakfast & other food items there, which is great, since town is a short drive away. It also had lots of extras like beach blankets & a cooler. It was very close to the park, which made going back and forth convenient. The neighborhood was quiet, and the surroundings were lush plants and flowers. The place could have used a little extra thorough cleaning & TLC in and out, but was nice & comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay!

"Not what I expected"
The owners of the home were lovely people. It just wasn't what I expected. I booked the artist cottage thinking that I was staying at a Bed and Breakfast. I was getting a room and someone was making me breakfast. In reality I was staying in the adjacent property or rental home and I had to make my own breakfast and do my own dishes. For the price I would have preferred to stay in a hotel and have someone else clean up after me, not turn on/off the water heater before and after my shower etc.

"Very friendly service"
The owners are very nice and helpful, I spoke with Bob a couple times on the phone and he was very helpful in allowing us a late check-in and giving us directions to the cottage. We met Bonnie when we arrived and she showed us around the cottage and gave us some tips on things to do in the area. we were planning to go to see the volcano in the morning but she told us we needed to go at night to see it and she was right. The night view was amazing. The park is just a couple minutes down the road. The cottage was very cute and fully stocked with food, drinks, toiletries, etc. 3 slept comfortably with a queen bed in the bedroom and a full bed in the living room.

"A Wonderful Home Away from Home"
From the moment that we arrived we were warmly greeted by Bonnie, who took care to describe all of the amenities that were offered. The home was immaculate, with a variety of toiletries, medicines, and lots and lots of snacks and real food to prepare in the event that one decided to eat in (great Hawaiian coffee). No shoes are worn inside, which is how it is done in Hawaii. My wife just well in love with the place (it was so comfortable for her) and my daughter said she wanted to stay another day. On the last day when we returned from a day of touring we arrived to find lighted candles, lovely Hawaiian music playing, snacks on our pillows and a warm farewell note. A lovely, thoughtful touch to put a nice end to our stay. My whole family would highly recommend the Artist Cottage.

This is a great place to stay. A very quaint cottage that was exceptionally clean, nicely decorated and stocked with virtually anything we could have possilbly forgotton to bring with us, including unbrellas (which you really need on this side of the island!) and flashlights. Hosts were extemely warm and welcoming and the location is within 5 minutes of Volcano NP and the Volcano Village. "Beautiful, secluded."
We only stayed a night, but I think this place deserves at least a week. Bob was so welcoming, the cottage is homely and simply charming. Volcano Village is small, and the entire area is difficult to do without at least some mode of transport, but the cottage is easy cycling distance to the N.P. while feeling a hundred years away. The only negative is that the spa is a little close to Bob and Bonnie's place (down the back of the cottage), which, if you're a little self-conscious, might be a barrier to using it. Overall though, I have already been raving about this place to any and every person I think might go to Hawaii in the future!

"Bed and Breakfast...and lunch"

"Extremely friendly owners, very close to Volcano National Park"
04/28/15 Dave W Denmark, Wisconsin
Bob and Bonnie (the owners of The Artist Cottage) are two of the nicest people you will ever meet in Hawaii. We loved the location of the cottage. Only a short distance to the entrance of Volcano National Park. Volcano Village is even closer if you want a quick breakfast/lunch or supper. Highly recommend Volcano Cafe there. The Cottage is extremely well stocked. We stayed there in the rainy season. They had rain coats waiting, hats if needed, umbrellas which we used, etc. We arrived later at night from one of the other islands. Bonnie met us at the door and showed us around. We made the mistake of picking up some items for breakfast before getting there at night. You DON'T need to, they had everything there waiting, fresh orange juice, cereal, waffles, eggs, fresh fruit, etc. Was a complete surprise for us. They have so many extras you cannot mentioned them all. Maps, flashlights, computer, free wi-fi, Washer/Dryer out back, Hot Tub, etc...just to name a few. Did I mention Bob is a full blood Irishman? What a hoot, my wife also is Irish. Needless to say we had an awesome time sitting with Bob late one night, just socializing over a few drinks. Enjoyed his company as much as the Island. Bonnie is an amazing artist also. You will find lots of her work hanging in the cottage and across the street in her art studio. It is just amazing. In the process now of having one of her paintings mailed home to us. Would most definitely stay again. We rented the cottage for four nights and it just flew by. Before I finish, a couple extras to mention. The box of chocolates left on our bed when we first arrived was a very nice touch. We loved them, thank you. Also, being busy during the day at the National Park. We usually arrived at the cottage after dark. It was extremely pleasant having the front pouch lit up the way it was (Accent lighting)....very inviting and it truly did feel like home after a busy day hiking in the park.

"Loved It!"
01/31/14 Family875342 Sheboygan, Wisconsin
We found this bed and breakfast on the Internet when we searching for a place to stay for one day to see the lava at night. What a treat and a blessing! We wish we could have stayed much longer than just the one night. We checked-in as a late-arrival after dark, but since we had spoken to the owners, they had thought of everything for us... flashlights were waiting, along with maps to the park, etc. so we were able to head straight to the park and explore! The only advice I would give is to make sure you flip the switch near the bathroom for the hot water heater when you arrive, to ensure you have plenty of hot water for showers. The cottage is adorable and clean! The kitchen is fully stocked with anything and everything you could think of or want. Books, shampoo, medicine cabinet fully stocked... it felt like we were staying in a friend's home. The table was beautifully set and waiting for us when we arrived. There is a hot tub down a little path (not far) from the cottage. We didn't get to use it since we were there such a short time, but the owner showed us around in the morning and it looked wonderful! If you are going to see the park and want a beautiful place to stay that's close (only 2 miles or less from the park entrance), then definitely choose The Artist Cottage! We loved it!
