I did not notice that this place had shared bathrooms until I had reserved the room. That information should be up front, and there should be a way to filter out places that do not have private bath facilities on the Hotels.com website. Obviously, after a long day of traveling, I would prefer to have a private bath. Other issues were satisfactory.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Beware "2 single beds""
For us this meant bunk beds! Super creaky & unstable bunk beds. Other than the bunk beds the room itself (desk, tv, sink, closet, fridge, etc) was very nice. the mattresses themselves were comfortable, but the creaky bed frames were awful. Hotel was very clean, breakfast was fine, hot drink machine convenient--especially free hot water throughout the […] day. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
It was a perfect budget hotel, except for three (unfortunately important) issues. First, I guess this isn't objectively bad, but they do NOT speak English, so if you don't speak French, you might be uncomfortable in the event of a problem. I read other reviews and thought "they must not know THAT little English", well, they do - they didn't know the […] word for "deposit" even though they ask for a $50 one on arrival. Like I said, not a personal failing, but an inconvenience for non-French-speakers. Second, they don't answer the buzzer. I buzzed for like 15 minutes before having to use my (roaming) phone to call the place to be let in. Third, the beds were not listed as bunk beds, but they were. And they were obviously made for children - the bottom bunk occupant can't sit up, and the top bunk sways so bad we had to move the mattress to the floor to keep from waking the lower occupant up. But it was clean, the rooms were a nice size, include sinks and fridges, and it is in a great location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best location, great price"
We had a great time at this unassuming hotel in the Francophone heart of Montreal. Small, clean, air-conditioned rooms, a friendly staff (it helps if you speak French or Spanish, as they speak limited English), free breakfast, and comfortable facilities all made for a nice stay. The bathrooms and showers are shared, but clean, with plenty of hot water, […] and we never had to wait to use one. But it is the location that truly sets this hotel apart. Literally next door to the Mont-Royal subway station, on a bustling corner of Saint-Denis and Mont-Royal streets, the neighborhood is full of interesting cafes, restaurants, bookstores, boutiques, chocolatiers, and much more. The amazing access to everything made this our favorite part of Montreal. We would definitely recommend staying here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Place - Old but with character - in center"
I was completely comfortable, except room smelled like it wasn't aired for months - and probably wasn't since there was no fresh air access. Window AC is loud but does keep room nicely cool.Manager was friendly and tried to help. Had nice bathrobes, useful when commuting to rest/bathrooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrific location; clean; bathroom/shwr down hall"
Inexpensive and terrific location adjacent to Metro. Number 11 bus stops across the street if you want to go to the top of Mont Royal. Excellent breakfast of fresh croissants and very good coffee. Very helpful staff. Toilet and shower are in separate little rooms off hall, and separate for men/women. Shower room is just a bit bigger than the shower, […] so there's very little room, but you can manage. Both toilet and shower very clean. So, with this in mind, and considering the price and location, I would highly recommend Hotel Stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
They didn't bother to tell me about th $15. parking fee, and it's not like this is in the middle of Montreal where they're trying to get away with NYC parking rates. The parking area was so icy, the car went into ruts, and you had to be extra careful to keep from falling. The back door to the lot had to be propped open with a piece of wood. "BEST place to stay in Montreal!!"
Great place. Cute, but nothing fancy-more like a hostel so if this is not your style, I would move along. Comfortable beds, clean room, shared bathroom not an issue at all. Location is perfect-right next to the Metro and the Mont Royal neighborhood is full of great restaurants and bars with live music-avoid Amir restaurant, however. Possible food poisoning […] from there! I read a review that the hotel can be noisy which is true-it is located right on a busy corner, but I brought a fan with me to block the noise (and earplugs!) and it was fine. The woman working the desk does not speak english or french particularly well, but easily got another owner on the phone to facilitate the transactions. They give you an outside key as well as a key to your room-I don't know what another reviewer was talking about having to stand outside and ring the buzzer for 20 minutes! It was convenient to come and go as we wished. Parking was kind of a pain-we ended up leaving the car in the garage the entire time and just taking the Metro which was very easy to navigate and fast! If you do park in the garage and decide to stay longer in Montreal (like we did!), make sure you tell the guys in the garage-they almost called the police because we hadn't come back for it when we thought we were going to and thought it was a stolen car? haha! If you can leave the car at home, even better. My only complaint about this place was how hot the room got-we were there in winter and I ended up having to open the window in order to sleep! Hope they have ac in the summer, but somehow I doubt it. All in all, loved this place, and you will too!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"This is a HOSTEL, not a hotel."
This is a small hostel owned by a son and mother, who do the cleaning themselves. It's quaint, quiet, and has only 12 or so rooms across two floors. The rooms are around 10'x10', and are furnished with a full sized bed, a side table, an armoir, a fairly large mini-fridge, a desk, chair, mini 17" or so HD tv with ~40 channels, a small sink, towel rack, […] and coat hooks. There's a small common area, about 8'x8' which contains two small round tables that each seat two people. There's a coffee machine, a public computer which is totally free (but slow), and a small counter and shelf where the free morning breakfast is placed. The breakfast consists of Costco croissants, peanut butter, jelly, bananas, apples, chocolate rugelach, various mini yogurts, and occasional cheap chocolate chip cookies. For drinks, there are mini fruit punch or grape juice boxes and coffee/espresso from the coffee machine with milk and sugar available. The place was pretty clean with no sign of bed bugs. The bathrooms are shared on each floor, with small toilet rooms and separate small standing shower rooms. The toilets have a sanitizer available so you can wipe the seat, which is nice. The showers were probably the worst part about the hostel. Tiny, cramped, and usually clogging up with hair, the hot water runs out in about 3-4 minutes if you even get any hot water at all. There is a shampoo/soap container available for everyone's use. In my friend's room, the main overhead light was broken/burnt out and they didn't fix it for our 4 night stay. The best thing about Hotel Stay Mont Royal is definitely the location. It is literally right outside the train station 'Mont Royal' making commuting anywhere easy. The surrounding area is also great for shopping, there's a drugstore across the street, and the entire street of Mont Royal has a bunch of shops. There's a huge supermarket about 10 minutes walk down, the famous Fairmount Bagels is about 15 minutes away, the super-famous smoked meat place Schwart Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect for me..."
My first visit to Montreal, by myself and this place was wonderful. The rooms are tastefully done and comfortable, the staff is great, and the location is prime- I could see the mont royal station from my window, and could get anywhere in the city from there. The only downside: the wireless wouldn't work for me, and the bathrooms(which are shared) were […] a little worn. But for that price? It's definately not a bad stay. This is more like a hostel than a hotel, small but very clean rooms. The room had its on sink but toilet and shower were shared with the other rooms. It is a great little Hotel. Shared bathrooms in the hall will be a turn off for some, but that small inconvenience was more than made up for by the great staff, perfect location, and the low price. "Hotel Stay Mont Royal"
My daughter and I found ourselves needing to make a week long trip to Montreal for a sudden appointment. We found the Hotel Stay on Hotels.com and decided to book there based on price and location. When we first entered the hotel and up the 2 steep flights of stairs, we didn't really know what we got ourselves into. Then we were given our room keys […] and the room was smaller than what we were expecting. This is the only thing that could be contrived as the least bit negative. By the end of our stay, our quaint quarters really felt like home. The family owned staff, despite a less than prolific understanding of English, were fantastic! We were treated very well and this was the best staff of any hotel that I had ever stayed at. The location is top notched being located at a corner that faces a major Metro station with very easy access to all parts of the city. There are several fantastic eateries within a quick walk from Hotel Stay. Our favorite was Mont Royal Hot Dog that has a huge menu including serving up a delicious smoked meat pizza. A drug store, open air produce market and most anything you could possibly want, is right there. We are planning on a more relaxed return to Montreal next summer and we will be staying once again at Hotel Stay. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to experience the flavor of Montreal. "Hotel Stay--Cute hotel in a fantastic area!!!"
With the low price of this hotel, it is a great deal! The workers at the hotel are more than willing to help you out. The rooms were cute and cozy, decorated with classic french style. The only downside was the shower and bathroom were outside the room, but no worries because there was never a line an definitely not a far walk from the bedroom. I couldn't […] get over the location. From little boutiques, tapas bars, a cupcake shop as well as other cute cafes, this was the perfect location (which wasn't too touristy either. Absolutely no souvenir or tourist shops on Mont Royal Avenue, which was refreshing to see). It was nice to wake up in the morning, grab a croissant, fruit, and juice box and head out for a busy day in the city. I felt completely safe. As a resident at Hotel Stay, I was given a key for my room, as well as one to enter the hotel, very secure! It was also nice to have a 24 hour cafe under the hotel--you never no when you'll need a caffeine boost!! Overall, great hotel for someone who is just looking for the basics in a friendly and safe hotel. Definitely recommend (especially for those on a tight budget, like me and my friend, college students, who took this road trip to Montreal). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Stay Mont Royal - Lively Neighborhood"
The hotel is really a hostel. The overall stay was really great - the room was small, but comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. The only two complaints are that when you first enter the place, there is a long staircase to the "lobby," so if you have a big bag, it may be difficult to get it up. Also, the shower and toilet rooms are absolutely tiny. […] But they were clean and you never had to wait for it. Breakfast was included - fruit, brownie bites, yogurt, tea, coffee, croissants, cinnamon rolls, etc. You should know a little French because the person working at the desk did not speak any English. The location was really great. Mont Royal is a very lively street with many cafes, shops, and lots of people around. The hotel was directly across from the Metro, which was really convenient. And there was an information booth right outside of the Metro if you needed information. Very conveniently located and nice if you don't mind a simple, but comfortable stay. This is a good hotel if one doesn't expect more than a place to sleep. The room was basic but adequate. The shared bathroom was a bit inconvenient. "Good location but not the best deal"
The owners do not speak much english so it was hard to communicate. They were very nice and accommodating but this hotel said it has free wifi and yet we could NOT get connected at all to it. Rooms were very clean you do have to share a bathroom with all other guests as well as a shower. They were very clean and to be honest all was okay other than […] the fact that it was SO HOT in our room we could not sleep at all. There is a very small fan and the windows do not open hardly at all. "Superb Location for No-Frills Travelers"
Took me back to my days backpacking through Europe-- a very small and basic room (though with flatscreen TV), clean WC and shower down the hall, and super-convenient location 25 meters from the Mont Royal Metro stop. Innkeeper did not speak English (and only a little French... good Spanish though, so we got by just fine), but was extremely kind to us […] when we arrived without warning at 1:30 am (thanks, Delta, for the delay) and was happy to store our bags for a few hours after we checked out but before we headed back to the airport. "Cute, Genial, Convenient"
My friend and I stayed here, when we visited Montreal for a conference. We reserved a double for 4 days. The hotel is cozy, located above a cafe right next to a Metro stop. In the surrounding neighborhood there are diverse eateries (e.g., Thai, MiddleEastern, Crepes, etc.), wine bars, a yoga studio, and a couple of theaters. The hotel itself is very […] well maintained. The staff is very accommodating and multilingual. They were very warm and super-considerate to my travel companion who is currently very pregnant. "Great location, basic amenities"
Hotel Stay Mont Royal is really more of a glorified hostel residing on top of a cafe. The bathroom was a single, shared, room with one shower. The toilet was in a separate room so we never had to wait to use either. The shared bathroom wasn't really a problem at all during our stay. The room was clean with a small television and a sink. There wasn't […] a hair dryer or an alarm clock, however, so be prepared to bring these items if you need them. The hotel manager did not speak any English (or French for that matter; I think he spoke Italian) but was friendly. The continental breakfast was really more of a spread of coffee, yogurt, and store bought pastries. However, the hotel location was phenomenal -- right across the street from the metro station and walking distance from many delicious restaurants and several vintage clothing stores. It's not really a so-called "hotel" but rather somewhat like an affordable B&B. Just across the street of the metro station (Station Mont-Royal). Superb service, staff is very friendly and helpful. Room is small but has a sink and cooler, which is nice. Wireless Internet is fast (same speed as what I have at home, 3 Mbps I guess) and stable. I didn't […] encounter any problem with the Internet. Shared bathroom is small, but shower gel and shampoo is provided. "Good on a budget, but nothing fancy."
The hotel is right near the Mont Royal metro train station. However, I didn't realize I walked by the hotel. There is a door right next to Cafe Noir, that is the hotel. If you are checking in for the first time, the door is locked. I pressed the doorbell and no one answered. Once you get up stairs you have to knock on the desk to have someone check […] you in. Once I got in my hotel room, I saw that it had a nice sized bed, a sink, and a great view of the city. However, I noticed that the sliding lock on my door was not attached. I talked to the front desk and they took care of it. Plus, you have to push the doorknob in to the right to lock it. I'm used to pushing a button in the door knob to lock it. Their breakfast is okay. They had cinnamon rolls, fruit, coffee, yogurt, and crossiants. But there are plenty of good places to eat breakfast around town. Their phone service is free, but it doesn't do long distance to the U.S. The hotel changed my sheets everyday, but I don't think they changed my towels. The sucky part is that you do have to share a bathroom and a shower. However, they do a good job cleaning it. Plus at times, you can hear people in the other rooms. Overall, I wasn't at the hotel often because I was out at the casino and watching my Bruins lose to the Habs. However, for the time I was in the hotel, I was comfy, relaxed and it was easy to get used to. If you are on a budget, you should think about here. If you're expecting 4 stars, try elsewhere. Totally adequate for the price - it had a sleepable bed with clean sheets, a door that locked, and a shared bathroom down the hall. Plumbing is a little loud if someone is showering late at night. "The Hostel which tried to sell itself as a hotel"
Wow, what a dissapointment this so called hotel was! To start with the positive, its in a very good location with many shops and restaurants around the area. Now onto the details: The 'hotel' was difficult to locate. Its not the typical north american hotel frontage one would expect. Its simply a doorway squeezed between two small businesses on either […] side and the name above the doorway. If your searching for it......look hard! The stairs leading up to the reception are narrow and steep #yes, expect stairs. if your carrying heavy luggage you better bring some muscle#. I had booked in advance a room with two beds. Enter the room....one bed. Speak with the owner/reception and he says there is a problem with Expedia and his hotel not being able to effectively communicate the bookings. He refused a discount because all rooms cost the same, regardless of number of beds. Instead, they brought a $20 special foam bed to the room to make up for the second bed. Be aware, the one toilet and shower per gendre are shared with the other occupants on your floor. Be prepared for a lineup in the morning!!! We did! The place was not super clean and in need of maintenance. Literally, the last time I stayed in a similar accommodation was in Europe. They called it a hostel not a hotel, AND I paid half the price!
