My daughter and I had planned on staying one night at the Margarta Inn. However, after experiencing the warmth and charm of the Inn we decided to stay another night, Why? Because It felt like we were staying with family, the people who ran the Inn were so warm and welcoming. Everyone spoke softly, all of the Inn was so quiet, the lighting was warm and […] relaxing. They had a lovely parlor with a grand piano that my daughter was able to play. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful, the cofee was great. we ate breakfast in the parlor which was furnished with antique chairs, sofa, table, etc. the door to the balcony were kept open which added the ambiance. The room was cozy as well, with the same feel as the rest of the inn. If you are looking for a modern high tech hotel experience this will not be the place for you. But on the other hand, if you want a unique experience where you are taken back in time, then this Inn is for you. I will definetly stay at the Margarita Inn the next time I am in Chicago. And I plan on going more often since I have a place to stay that feels like home :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Charming but room musty"
This is a charming old place. The service was excellent. We were on the first floor and the room had quite a musty smell. Perhaps a room on another floor would be better Nonetheless it is a pretty cool place, well located and good value. A major renovation is planned. I think this will helpGenuine Expedia guest review
"Peaceful and friendly place to stay"
I enjoyed my stay at the Margarita very much. My room was clean, mattress comfortable, and the room was very quiet. It is in a great neighborhood with a variety of restaurants. The breakfast was simple but good - excellent coffee, the breads and rolls were fresh, hardboiled eggs and oatmeal were available, and fresh fruit was there for the taking also. […] Bathroom facilities were down the hall, and were very clean. Try it - you'll like it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We stayed for a weekend so the small room (really, really small....!!!) worked for us and a non-working tv was hardly missed but it would have been nice to have a little more space and a working tv for night. That said, the room was very clean, the a/c unit worked well and the place was quiet at night. We were not aware that it was communual bathrooms […] at the time of purchase, so we were definitely surprised to find out that we would be sharing a co-ed bathroom with the rest of the floor which made showers and a "quick run" to the bathroom a little less than desired or convenient. This place isn't for everyone, but it served the purpose we needed -- a bed, a roof, good price and close to the train station. The staff were all very helpful and friendly! If you like a hotel with antiques and a long history then this hotel is for you! The breakfast room and library have loads of ambiance. If you are looking for a comfortable room then I suggest you stay at Garden Inn by Hilton, the Hilton Orrington or the Best Western - in that order. I have stayed at all four hotels and Garden Inn is the most comfortable. […] The Maragarita just was not comfortable starting with A/C, beds and room in general. The staff was helpful over and above the usual. They provided more than information, they provided other things, like an umbrella when it was raining. A note to people dependent on technology. "Convenient to Evanston, Northwestern, and the L"
Older hotel. Was there in the spring and able to open the window for fresh cool air. Good water pressure in the shower. Continental breakfast. VERY small tv but I was hardly in my room. Staff is VERY friendly. Overall, I enjoyed my stay there very much over the hotel chains in the area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I consider my stay at this property a life experience! The historical significance of the building added value to my stay. "I'll be back!"
What a terrific experience -- like stepping back 100 years into a bygone era. Lovely "drawing room" with fireplace where we enjoyed shortbread cookies and hot chocolate one evening before a roaring fire. Beautiful vintage furniture...very European feeling. Loved the music from the era of the 30's- 40's which played in the background of the parlor. "Lovely stay in Evanston"
Looking for a hotel in Evanston - close to everything. My recent stay in this hotel was delightful. It was quaint, cozy and very nice. Our stay at the Margarita European Inn was wonderful! It's a quaint and unique place to stay. The receptionist at the desk was very helpful with giving us information about parking, wireless, etc. Parking is offered on-site a very reasonable price and the hotel is minutes away from the train station. The room was clean and cozy. Breakfast was offered […] in the morning. Evanston also seemed like a very fun place and we wished we had more time to explore the surrounding business district. "a historic gem"
We got the last available hotel room close to our destination. We felt like we hit the jackpot. We loved the authentic decor that reflected turn-of-the-century design. "Charming Marguerita Inn takes you back in time."
Charming European style hotel, circa 1920's in a lovely part of Evanston. It was like stepping back in time. The building was originally built to rent rooms to single women who came to the city to work. Some of the rooms share a dormetory-style bathroom. Now that it's a hotel, men's and women's bathrooms are on separate floors--very private--even the […] sinks are in private stalls. Highlights: friendly and helpful staff, bountiful breakfast in the parlor, beds very comfortable, bathrobes provided, emaculate! We booked the last room available, which happened to be a shared bath. Didn't mind--it just added to the whole experience! We highly recommend the Marguerita European Inn! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good experience, but......"
The only thing I didn't care for is sharing a bathroom with the rest of the floor. As a woman traveling alone, I was not comfortable with that arrangement at all. Everything else was wonderful and very pleasant, and very courteous service.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great bargain, if no special needs"
This hotel is a quaint bed-and-breakfast type facility, old-worldly, comfortably clean, great location near downtown evanston, easy access to public transportation to chicago and surrounding suburbs, and reasonably priced given the local alternatives. My only complaint occurred as a result of booking during an unusually windy period: my room was directly […] over a set of 3 or 4 huge flags posted out front. These flags made such a howling racket that it made sleeping impossible. I received little sympathy from the staff who seemed powerless to change my room without imposing an additional charge. My sense was that the staff had little authority to address such situations on their own. As long as you are able to 'roll with things as you find them', you will probably enjoy this place and the extra dollars you save. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Stay at Margarita Inn"
I stayed one night at this hotel. it was surprisingly nice hotel for the price. Relatively small and old, but beautifully decorated in European style, and has a elegant italian restaurant in it. "Evanston's best kept secret"
This hotel is a wonderful little gem in the heart of Evanston. It's definitely a classic, European style hotel modeled after old world charm and gives a very warm feeling. I felt very good with the attitude of the people that work in the hotel. If you can accept the shared bathroom there shouldn't be any reason why you would not like this hotel. It has personality. "Utterly charming and perfect for a single visitor"
This is a charming B&B very reminiscent of a student dorm on the sleeping floors, combined with an old English club/parlor on the main floor. They have deliberately kept the setting and decor in the 1920s style it originally was, as a business women's residence. Think of being back in a dorm room and padding down the hall in the terry cloth robe they […] give you, when you want to visit the gentlemen's bathroom/toilet/shower down the hall. Continental breakfast is good pastries, coffee, orange juice, etc. Many very good restaurants a few blocks' walk. The location is ideal for using Chicago area public transportation (bus, commuter train, or bus) making a car unnecessary for getting to the main tourist spots. The only things missing that I wanted, and had to find elsewhere, were a computer guests could use (the public library is 4 blocks' walk) and a coin laundromat, if you're staying long enough to need to do a load of wash. The closest of those I found was two el stops north, a few doors east of the Noyes stop on the Purple line. All in all, a fine spot for a visit to Chicago as long as you don't want or need a mega-luxury-hotel, and really, folks, who really does!? Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Taste of the Old World"
I stayed here for the first time on Sept 4th, 1999 staying for a week before I got my first US apartment. So as I plan to leave the country 12 years later, I thought I would take my wife on a walk down memory lane. I was not disappointed! The Margarita is aged, and has few rooms with en-suite bathrooms, but the staff are super-friendly and the dining […] room exquisiste, as is the restaurant. The rooms are also sweet, old style and yet not lacking in anything. "Evanston's best kept secret"
Built in the 1920s as the Margarita Club, a place for single career women to reside, the Margarita European Inn offers a charming residential setting just a few blocks from the core of Evanston's great downtown. A wonderful Italian restaurant in the English basement with the delightful reception area above, it's a blast back in time: a cozy library, […] vintage furnishings, French door pairs opening onto balconettes which line the 2nd story from the lounge, marble bathrooms, rooftop terrace and more. This building is amazing in structure!! It however lacks convenience... I took two days of cold showers because it takes 15 minutes for the water to heat. Also the parking is around the block. "Great Vintage Inn"
I liked it a lot because it is cheap, close to subway and train station. The hotel feels like you are in a old Europian movie. It is very historical. We booked a room with shared bathrom. The bathroom is clean, never full. It has each toillete, each sink, each shower and each bath in separate areas with it own individual door. If you smoke there are […] plenty of area to do it, including the top level terrace. The breakfast is good, it has the best croissant ever. There was hair in the sinks in the bathrooms. I found spiders in the tub. The space in the bedroom was small-- very tight conditions. I think the price was too expensive for the type of hotel. "Affordable and Convenient to Chicago B&B"
We arrived after 11 p.m. after seeing Lollapalooza in Grant Park and the lobby was closed, but clear instructions were left for after hours check-ins - management provided a clear map with the keys in a keysafe. After we figured out where to park in the alley to avoid moving the car at 9 a.m. or have it towed (just $8 a night to park), we unloaded our […] things using the building key and got to our room using the old school metal grate elevator. My daughter commented that the neighborhood was nice, and the hotel was like we were in a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery. It was vacant and a little dark at night first time in a new place. That night, I explored the amenities, which included a large shared bath down the hall on the 5th floor, a roof garden, shared dormitory-style shower facilities on the 4th (women) and 3rd floors (men), and my favorite place I discovered that night, Doolee's Library, where I sat in their leather chair and was able to write and calm down after a long day. Saturday morning we planned to go into the city to see the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Water Tower Mall. We took it easy in the morning, took advantage of the nice continental breakfast and wifi in the common room, which was now unlocked, and then scooted into town using surface streets not highway, very fast route into downtown to north Chicago. The Margerita was perfectly located for this trip. My daughter was liking the place much better in the daylight, she could be alone in the room while I was in the common room or Dooley's. There was a nice room air conditioner on the floor, which was up and running when we arrived first night. It had a wastebasket to catch the water. When we called down to have it emptied when it filled, so it would not spill, staff quickly did that for us. Our room, booked at the last minute, was small and sparsely appointed, but nice and very tidy with comfortable feather beds - two twins - and feather pillows, a favorite of mine. "A distinctive place to stay"
I found it a very characterful hotel, with historic building fabric and quality furnishings, and the staff were friendly.
