To all looking to stay in Evanston this is a wonderful property. I was there looking at Northwestern with my daughter and came across this gem. Quaint, clean, comfortable, and very warm. They have two common areas, one is a library and the other where breakfast is served looks like your english grandmothers living room. Breakfast is included and fantastic chocolate croissants! If you're in town give this gem a try!

This is about the 8th time I've stayed at the Margarita Inn and love it every time we are there. The location is great for an Evanston stay and the rooms are lovely. We stayed in a newly decorated room and all I can say about that bed is WOW! It was beautiful. The bathrooms are updated and very nice as well. I love the vintage elevator and the 1920's feel of the building. The staff is terrific and helpful. I'm already booked for my next trip! Thanks for everything.

Another lovely stay (possibly in the very same room) as we came to Evanston to visit Northwestern again. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms quaint and comfortable, and the breakfast delicious (freshly baked pastries, greek yogurt & STEEL CUT oats!!) Again, somewhat concerning was the fact that the old metal-framed bathroom window seemed not to seal up completely (leading out to the fire escape). Definitely a unique experience not like your typical cookie-cutter hotels. We loved it.

The room was nice, I really liked the overall feel of the hotel, lots of history and charm. Breakfast was really nice, not a huge spread, but everything was delicious. Most of the hotel staff was very friendly, with one exception. I was in town for a memorial service and needed late check out to get ready, which they allowed, but the lady at the front desk acted like it was a major inconvenience, which rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

Absolutely excellent. Older building with an iffy elevator, but not only was the room old-world-charm wonderful. The people were exceptionally friendly. Lots of great places to eat/walk just blocks away. Only drawback is that its a long way from a freeway and takes a while to get to either airport.

I would not recommend this for a business trip. The room was small and lovely but did not have a desk. I had to sit on the bed to work on my laptop. The only outlets near the bed were the lamp and the clock radio. I had to disconnect the clock in order to have an outlet. Getting a wifi signal was difficult and had to sit close to the window. The hotel definitely needs a facelift and it seems like they are going through some renovations now. Beautiful area and quaint old hotel but not set up for modern business conveniences.

Definitely planning to return when we're back around Evanston. The Margarita is a lovely hotel with old-fashioned elegance that my teen son and I really enjoyed. The beds were very comfortable with multiple pillows of varied softness, so we both got a good night's sleep. The room was somewhat small, but had an amply-sized bathroom and closet and it was very clean. The staff was eager to offer assistance and the morning continental breakfast spread in the sitting room was delicious (if carb-centric). A better tea than Lipton, would be icing on the top, but we'll consider it a treat to return!

I was there for five days for business an pleasure. The front desk staff would do anything for you to have a wonderful stay. From recommendations for food how to get around , trains to the city and buses and places for coffee for the theater. My friend wanted to rent a car had his wallet stolen in another state trip and had a temp licence. The car rental could not rent a car with a temp licence and the woman at the frond deck worked on finding a way for him to travel to kenosha for a meeting the next day. It was a challenge for finding some one to take him but she found someone. She went out of her way for my friend. The sweet rolls and coffee and breakfast was nice and very fresh. And Hot Coffee all times of the day nice to have when you cannot sleep and come down and have a nice cup of coffee at 2 am. Just the most wonderful stay and such a beautiful place so historic. I just love the Designer hotels as they call them. Here in the Chicago area, talking old hotels and redoing them so much more character and wonder. I am a person that does not need a pool and work out room and just want something different, I reminded me of being in Italy or Spain or any other European country. So nice to find a Diamond in the Ruiff.

I absolutely loved this hotel. I read the reviews, good and bad, and decided to just go for it. As an ex-flight attendant that sometimes misses the European scene, this was the perfect escape. The building was historic, and the decor was European with a fresh finish. Great change from the high-rise sparkling hotels of downtown chicago. This hotel was nestled in a beautiful neighborhood, easy to miss if your weren't looking for it. The continental breakfast was above and beyond. I enjoyed trying to find the coffee cup for me, as each cup was different, which appealed that that green/recycle part of my personality. The old elevator was just funny. I kept waiting for the door to open on it's own. I fell in love with the sink in my bathroom. The train to Downtown Chicago was easy enough to walk to, but there was enough in Evanston to keep me busy for half a day, boutique shopping. Oh and there was this Bakery, Bennington or some name like that, on the way to the train that was amazing. I don't think I will stay anywhere else for sometime.

When I got to the hotel their were a few other people complaining about their rooms saying that their was trash on the floor or it hadn't been dusted... I think people expected a stale chain hotel.. I think with the character or a older hotel such as this you have some quirks about it..Their was a gorgeous bed in the room, the bathroom was nice. The room was tighter but just fine for just me. They had a complimentary breakfast of croissants, breads, oatmeal, coffee in their sitting room. Parking is cheap and it isn't far from anything but not right in the middle of places to eat . shop

This lovely little hotel is a nostalgic treat -- the lovely antique furniture in the parlor and library coupled with the charming cage elevator set the stage for,a Victorian manor house but the room was large and comfortable and the bathroom and fixtures seemed very new. The staff was charming and helpful. Parking was inexpensive and it was possible to walk to to a variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

The cheery staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Fabulous european breakfast complete with homemade croissants. I probably ate 6-7 over 3 days in the comfy sitting room. Parking was reasonable and a block a way. Worth to me as this location is walking distance to Metra which leaves endless possibilities for travel. My LA Fitness was walking distance too. Within minutes you can be walking along Lake Michigan. There are fancier places to stay but I would pick this hotel again due to staff, location, etc.

The 'old world' architecture of this hotel has been preserved as a recent remodeling has provided some very nice upgrades to the rooms. The Margarita European Inn's website makes you think victorian charm but the first thing you notice as you walk in the front door is old, run down and musty. The first thing our grand-daughter said upon entering was "creepy" and that it is...old, run down and creepy. My husband called it the Bates Hotel. The front desk room was shabby and looked dirty. The staff was very helpful, I will not fault them but this place is decrepit and needs major renovation or at the very least deep cleaning and ventilating. The room was clean enough and the bathroom was renovated. The shower water temperature was very hard to regulate. So much so that we had to call on staff to try and get it to work for us but you have to go all the way down to the front desk for help because they wouldn't answer when we called on our room phone. The bed mattress was hard and uncomfortable and linens smelled slightly of bleach. The rooms have air conditioning but the rest of the facility is not so it was hot and muggy in the rest of the building. The Coke machine in the hallway did not work. The only ice machine was in the lobby. Complimentary breakfast was cold hard boiled eggs with green yolks, toast, english muffins, fresh fruit, pastries, granola bars, coffee and orange juice. Tiny elevator barely big enough for 2 adults 1 child and luggage. If you have claustrophobia you might want to take the steps. We won't be staying there again.

There are so few places to stay around Chicago that are not the same sterile hotel chains. This was a wonderful surprise - an historic building with old-fashioned elegance, grand ballroom with pastries for breakfast, manual elevator, great pedestal sinks and antique furniture my kids could actually lounge on. With luck we'll come back again, as family is nearby.

This was a good place for me to stay as I set my daughter up in a sublet for the summer. Charming decor, good location, friendly staff, and continental breakfast in old-fashion parlor included. Unfortunately there were some issues with the room, particularly the bathroom. There were hairs, the toilet was running until I fixed it, and the temperature setting mechanism in the shower wasn't working - it was either a bit cool or scalding.

The majority of this beautiful Inn has been updated with new beds, carpets, paint and bathrooms. It now has all the conveniences of a modern hotel with the old word charm still intact. It was so nice to be in a comfortable hotel without the sameness of other places. The Grand Parlor, Library and courtyard are particulally beautiful.

My fiancee and I stayed two nights at this beautiful, affordable hotel and we were delighted with our experience. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We couldn't have asked for more. Clean, classy, elegant all the way. The building has all the ambience it should for one built in 1927 and the recent renovations are lovely. You're missing out by not staying here. Clean.

We stayed with our family over Christmas and had a delightful time. It was our second stay and so much more enjoyable than the big corporate hotels. The fresh French breakfast would be a reason to return over and over again. We even had a conversation with the creator of the delicious pastries. Loved the Inn!

My husband and I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Margarita European Inn. What a refreshing change from the sterile, cold and uninteresting large chains we've stayed at in the past. This hotel is simply charming & unique; it has been recently renovated but staying true to its original self. The rooms are lovely; the beds wonderful for a good nights sleep & the bathrooms are fabulous. The staff (with a special thanks to Katharine) will do everything they can to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. They are always on hand to help with any queries you may have; from restaurants to ordering taxis. The Continental breakfast is delicious; including fresh pastries, croissants, fruits, yogurt and muesli. Our son lives in Evanston so we shall be regular visitors. The Margarita is the hotel we will always choose above any others; it is literally like 'home from home'....

"Not for Business Travel"

This very quaint hotel is located in a lovely neighborhood. The photos looked beautiful but upon arrival I couldn't help but notice all the peeling paint and cracked wood. Definitely needs a facelift. The bathroom of the tiny room was recently remodeled. But please tell me where would they suggest I put "my stuff" since there is absolutely no counter space. Pedestal sink and they had hotel items on the back of the toilet. No place to put any items. After working all day, I returned to the hotel to send emails and write a report. Surprise! I realized there isn't even a small desk. I had to sit on the bed with my laptop on top of several pillows. The only outlet close to the bed was for the lamp and the clock radio. I had no choice but to unplug the clock radio in order to plug in my computer. I could barely get a wifi signal in the room unless I was leaning towards the window with the laptop. If this hotel was remodeled, painted and updated, it would be a charming place to stay but NOT if you intend on using it for business.

"Excellent Hotel!!!"

I stayed at this hotel for a weekend getaway with my husband, and I have to say it was the most comfortable hotel that I have ever been to. The room was clean and very elegant, and the staff was very pleasant. I actually felt like I was in Europe. I will be going back for my birthday this year.

"European experience! Very warm memory..."

I stayed at the Margarita Euro Inn with my soon to be husband in July. I expected an Americanized fake European hotel ambiance, yet was pleasantly surprised... It felt really like I'm back home! The hotel is obviously renovated but they kept the essence of the old continent which reminded me of back home :). The elevator's sliding gate for example, or the warm croissants served in the morning - it all brought warm memories of my childhood. Not to mention the friendliness of all the personnel. The only issue I had was the appearance of small ants on the bathroom floor...That was only for the first night, so we informed the staff about the problem and it was remedied the next day. Bottom line - if you are looking for a generic hotel, then Margarita Inn is not for you! But if you are a sophisticated traveler seeking an authentic boutique hotel, this is the one!

"actually, beyond terrible"

My sister and I arrived just after dark on a Thursday evening, and we struggled to even find the hotel. No lights outside or signage, I recognized it from the flags. No curb cut in or even dedicated parking for arrivals. Entrance not marked, over to the left of the building. We brought our roller cases up a step, then inside, up two more steps, then three more, and then I balked at the long flight up. I left my bag where it was and ascended. The only person in the place was a woman behind glass and on the phone. I needed a restroom and the woman called out to point me to it. I opened a door into a kind of storage room. The door to the actual bathroom was to the left but once I saw the dirty bucket and mop resting just outside it, I took a pass. Back in the lobby, I approached the glass. The woman was still on the phone and I asked her to get off. She did in a another minute or so. We were going to at least look at the room, but when the woman pulled open the old time grate to allow us into the elevator, I just said no. The whole picture just was dismal and depressing. (And yes, like others who have reviewed, I should have noticed the red flag of not being able to get a phone call through a few days earlier.) My mind made up, I said I wasn't going to stay there, my sister had no problem with that and we left. Fortunately, the Hilton Garden Inn was able to accommodate us and we were relieved not to be searching in the dark for a room any longer. I have no idea how anyone could write a positive review of this place. And it did not feel clean, at all. It's hard to believe something this bad can stay in business. We did ask the woman at the desk if she was there alone - and she said she was. It was like a joke hotel, though not funny at the time.
