While the room was exceedingly small it was more than enough. There were no clothes hangers only hooks. A person who has spent time on a vessel will find themself right at home. It is not for a person with walking problems. It is eight or ten blocks from the subway, numerous steps up from the street. But it has much to recommend it to a traveler and the cleanliness was outstanding. Grat staff too.

Perfect little hotel in great area! The rooms are small but perfect for a single person who just needs the room to sleep. It was a little different with the community bathroom, but everyone was very respectful. The rooms were clean and so were the bathrooms. The hand run elevators are very neat and old fashion to go along with the style of the hotel. However they were not operating at all times. So prepare to use the stairs. The area was pretty quite at night. The hotel had awesome parties in their new bar/lounge area. There were a lot of people trying to get into the hotel for the "club" scene there, which made it a little hard to get into the hotel. But once i was in, i went straight to the bar and enjoyed my night. Overall for the price, the Hotel is very convenient and right in the hotspots of the meatpacking district.

The value of the hotel was very good. Location a bit of a hike to get to the L,but a short cab ride away. WHile the hotel may be inexpensive, restaurants are jsut the opposite. We thought Mexican would be a reasonably priced food choice til we saw $25 quesadillas on the menu - ouch. We went to a Thai place for dinner called SEA where prices were reasonable. I found the beds to be quite comfortable as were the pillow and the sheets just as nice as anything you would find at the Hilton. Im pretty lean so I don't require a lot of space and found the beds to be ample size for one. 2 would be a stretch and not as comfortable but doable. I was disappointed to see a cockroach but I may have contributed to its appearance by leaving a half eaten burger (though it was in the styrofoam container) in the room that night. It was real quiet on the floor I stayed on and you'd think it was a Monday night, but this was a Friday night. Bathrooms were very clean also. Rooms, while warm upon entering did cool off quickly when you inserted the electricity key, which I think is a great idea. I also liked the toilet conservation mechanism, with 2 flush options. While the hotel rates are very reasonable, don't expect the lounge to be reasonable. For a rum and coke and a glass of champagne (we didn't even request a brand) it was $31!!! That's high even for NY standards. Also, that didn't even get you a seat anywhere as all the seating spots were reserved which I thought was very uncool, especially with what they charge for drink prices. We decided to go to a venue where there was a better atmosphere & better drink prices(The Park).

I was very pleasantly surprised that the room actually seemed larger in person than in the pictures and it had a great utilization of space with both under and over bed storage as well as hooks on three of four walls to hang things on, not to mention the shelving at the foot of the bed. Designed like a ships cabin I certainly wouldn't have minded heading to to sea in this room for a couple of weeks. The TV and AC(discreetly hidden behind a grill)both were controlled via remote so you didn't have to move to change the channel or temperature in the room. The bathrooms were very clean and you can't beat rainfall showers. The bathrobe in the room is a nice/practical touch for your trips to the bathroom. One big surprise during my stay, coming back to the hotel late Friday night and seeing a long line outside. Turns out the bar/nightclub in the old two-story ballroom is quite popular...and no waiting in line for hotel guests. With all the nightlife downstairs, upstairs was still very quiet. I look forward to staying here again, soon.

I wanted an affordable hotel since I only planned to stay overnight in NYC and I doubted I would spend much time at the hotel. The Jane Hotel fit the bill because it was not only affordable, but the staff was very accommodating. Since, I arrived at The Jane several hours before check in, I was able to observe the courteous manner in which the staff checked out guests and delt with problems that arose in a few rooms. Upon my request, the staff stored my baggage so I could travel around the city unburdened. Although I initially arrived at 11 a.m., I did not check in until 11 p.m. and the staff was fine with my late arrival. I had the smallest room available which was just fine, since I spent a total of 4 hours there anyway. The room was very comfortable except for being a little warm since energy saving methods require you to stay in the room in order for the air conditioner to work. One of the showers in the 4th floor bathroom drained slower that I would have liked, but I worked around that. Overall, my stay was excellent and I would happily stay at the Jane Hotel again.

On the plus side: staff is attentive and helpful; some nice, charming little details in the decoration and equipment of the rooms; free wireless internet. Some reviewers complained that there were construction works going on and that this was a turnoff; as of August 2009, construction is still going on but this wasn't a problem for me, at most I would bump into the odd construction worker in the lobby or the stairs, but this wasn't a problem fo my confort.

The Jane presented exactly what I was expecting. The phots of the rooms set the right expections as the rooms are tiny, but are exactly as shown. The complimentary bottle of water was a nice touch as well. The bathrooms were exteremly clean even in the middle of the day. However, there was no place to hang one's towel while showering and the floor got quite wet after a couple uses. The room walls are a bit thin as well, but I did not encounter an issue with noise. Also, elevator did not seem to be available 24hrs a day which could be a bit annoying for some guests. I had, also, been expecting some sort of hotel fee/tax on top of my rate, but those fees came to about $132 extra for two nights which seemed to be a bit much. Yet for the traveler on a budget or someone who is traveling alone, the Jane is a fantastic choice.

If you're looking for a twist in your hotel stay, book a night at the Jane Hotel. The decor was "old school"; from the chandeliers to the bellhop uniforms, the hotel is something to appreciate for it's attempt at authenticity (I saw 'attempt' because I never lived during the age when hotels had these fixtures). Pros: This hotel was cozy, quiet, out of the way, inexpensive, and had a different (yet interesting) room decor. Although the bathrooms were shared in a common area, the toilets and showers were private (with a door with lock to ensure that privacy). Another plus is the availability of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash from dispensers located in the shower area (this was perfect for me, since I forgot my shampoo). Cons: The room is small (the one I booked was the standard room, which is good enough for ONE person... no more, unless you want to sleep on top of each other). The shared bathroom was something I was aware of going in, but the shower slippers they provide are flimsy (I highly suggest bringing your own). Also, the Jane Hotel is blocks away from a subway station. The easiest way to get there would be a cab, or taking a bus to Jane Street and walking west. In addition, the hotel uses an energy-saving system that requires you to plug in a metal rod in order to use the electricity in your room. This can be a pro and con, as you're saving energy... but you're stuck carrying around the only thing that allows you to turn on the lights and AC. Be aware that this rod is attached to the keyring of your room key (i.e. you're be carrying around a HUGE room key if you plan on going out). All around, the experience was a nice one. If you're a local looking for an inexpensive place to crash after a night out, I recommend this hotel.

The Jane is great. I enjoyed my stay there, the shared bathrooms were not a problem (I never waited to use and they are clean). I was a little worried about that in the beginning. The rooms are very small but cute I nicknamed them Cabin Fever. The neighborhood is the best in NYC. The only thing is the hotel used to be SRO housing so you have pervious tenants who still live there. They are nice but one or two are a little smelly, just an FYI. That did not stop me from the enjoying the place. Also, the room is only space for one person. Two people is 1.5 to many. Enjoy and I hope you love it!

They make up for this with great service. The rooms have flat screen T.V.'S, a fan and air conditioner, and comfortabe bed (twin..again small). At night there is a very hip dance club/ lounge on the second floor which attracts alot of NY hipsters. If you're into that, it's a great place to be. If not, you don't hear it at all from your room. They are currently doing construction on the hotel, which can make the wait for elevator long at times. I would definitely stay here again.

I got this hotel in a last minute rush and failed to notice the communal bathrooms! Obviously if I was more familiar with the area I would have realized the low price had to come with some caveats. The rooms are based on sailor cabins, replete with wood accents and pleasant trimmings. They feature an ipod dock, flat screen tv and a bottle of saratoga spring water and glassware. Also an energy saving brass rod "key" which slides into a hole in the wall to turn on all of the rooms electric. The bathroom was spotless, with solid wood doors to the oversized shower and toilet. I saw very few people when I used the bathroom, mostly travelling families and business man as well as a couple of people who seemed down on their luck. Excellent location. They are adding a swimming pool and "captains rooms" which will have private bathrooms.

This hotel is one of the eccentricities that makes New York great. You feel like you've stepped back in time 100 years, but still have the comfort of comfy beds and hot showers. From the stuffed monkey wearing a fez behind the reception desk to the ship cabin style bedrooms, it is the perfect antidote to the uniform drabness of many hotels. Along with this, you're just across the road from the Hudson River, about a mile and a half north of Battery Park. It makes for a fantastic morning run. That, and the neighbourhood feels safeafter dark, with plenty of folks around. Yes, the rooms are small, they're still renovating and you share the bathroom, but it's well worth any inconvenience these things cause. All they need is en-suite rooms and an end to the building work to make it perfect. But I think not trying to be perfect is part of the charm.
