Not bad for an all inclusive. LOTS of people so not the best choice for someone seeking a more intimate setting. Food at the theme restaurants DEFINATELY better than at the buffets. Travelers to Dominican Republic should also be aware of the 18% tax on ALL credit card purchases!!

Overall, the hotel was nice and the location and beach were gorgeous. I gave the lower ratings due to the details that were lacking. The food was absolutely terrible, except for Kyoto. We were lucky to eat there our last 2 nights at the resort, otherwise we would have gone home hungry. The buffets sat for long periods of time and the food was either […] old or cold or both. We realized that they charged for certain items after we got there. Certain drinks were unavailable unless you paid $5. A gray goose redbull would cost you $10. The shopping malls at the resort were terribly over priced as well. Your orientation appointment is at 8:30 the morning after you get in at 11pm from the states in an office that is nearly impossible to find after being at the resort for less than 10 hours and if you miss it like we did because we couldn't find it and no one could understand us enough to tell us where it was, they will do very little to help you afterwards. We went 4 times after finding the office and were always told to come back. The rooms were nice and they were clean, but the up keep is poor. We asked for an upgraded room after being originally placed in a family building about as far away from bars, food and nightlife as possible. In the new room light bulbs were out and the mini fridge didn't work. All in all, the beach made up for all of that! Stunning! Read more

The hotel, staff and amenities are spectacular!!! The food at the buffet and Sante Fe restaurant were fantastic. I was disappointed with the "Coral" restaurant and the Japanese restaurant. The seafood at the Coral restaurant was sad, and considering the abundance of fish in Santo Domingo you would think that this restaurant would have been one of the […] better. The Japanese restaurant was AWFUL!!!! The sushi tasted old, and the place smelled of old fish. My suggestion is that the Barcelo Bavarro close the Japanese restaurant and replace it with a Caribbean fare. If you're not sure how to cook something stay with what you know. We had a terrible first night at the hotel. When we arrived our room was already occupied. By the time we got a new room we found out that the sink leaked, the ceiling fan did not work, and the jacuzzi did not work. Trying to relay all of this to the staff was difficult with the language barrier. Finally, we ended up switching rooms to avoid the headache […] that had been caused all day by trying to get the repair men to our room. Once they switched us we had a very nice ocean view room. The staff at breakfast and lunch was not the best, they were slow to bring you drinks and even when we asked they would take their time and serve others before finally coming back to serve you. One day after we had asked for them to bring coffee they finally got around to it after we had finished breakfast. On the plus side: The wait staff at the restaurants at night and the bars were very nice and accommodating. The spa and grounds were very well kept. Go to Hole 19 at the golf course for lunch, much much better than the buffets! And the margaritas at the Carey Bar were delicious. The shows at night were very good. If you do go, spend the extra money and upgrade to Club Premium. We did not and I regret it. A friend of mind stayed at the same resort a few months before we did and upgraded and they had a completely different experience. Read more

This was our second time at this hotel. Checkin takes forever and the room are never ready. Usually you need to wait at least a couple hours. The rooms aren't that clean and the shampoo dispensers are always broke. The resturants serve preportioned frozen servings. The Buffet was very good though.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace was awesome. The facilities were excellent and massive. The beach was also very beautiful. We ate at the Italian restaurant (awesome), the Japanesse restaurant (very good) and the Steakhouse (good). Their was a large variety of food at the buffets and the service was ok. The biggest problem with the service is the language barrier […] as they try but they don't understand enough english. I enjoy my stay at Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe.My room was next to the main pool ,so I was close to everything. The golf course was in great condition,and the Japanese and Mexican restaurant was very good.The only negative issues were the French and Spanish restaurant cost you $15 to eat,and you could not eat or drink at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach.

Although this is not my first trip to DR, I found that this resort was a disappointment. I found the restaurant service to be very sub-par especially in the buffet restaurant. I found it more like a chore to eat than a fun and relaxing experience. I had better service in Diners. Just finding an empty table that contained the proper utensils, glasses […] and cups was difficult. And if something was missing, it was faster to take it from another table than asking the staff to replace it as they were slow to perform the smallest of tasks, As of Nov 1, the resort changed it's policies and some restaurants are not included in the "all-inclusive" package. The french restaurant now has a cost of $50 per person per meal. If you are an adult and booked a room at the Palace side of the resort, you cannot dine at the adult side of the resort (Barcelo Beach) without a $15 per person fee per day. But Barcelo Beach guests can dine and utilize the Palace amenities even though you payed more for the Palace accommodations. I'm still trying to make sense of that one. Also, no beach grass umbrellas (they were there in 2011) and no beach drink service (also there in 2011). So if you're a person that likes to sit on the beach in the shade, you will be moving your chair every 15 min to follow the sun. So even though the resort was clean, I would not return here. The only thing that needs to be improved(A LOT) is the service in the restaurants, they need lots of training, pay better attention to the customers, ask if they need something and act faster. We checked in at 3:30 pm and it took another hour until our room was ready. Luckily reception area staff stays with your luggage until you are ready to go to your room....and we had our wristbands, so we were able to relax in one of the bars until our room was ready. The resort is EXTREMELY clean, especially all the outdoor areas and walkways (you could […] safely walk around barefoot). There are a variety of pools to choose from depending on how much you want to be around kids. The beach is just beyond the pool area; and there are outdoor shower areas to wash off from the sand. Many outdoor bars (one partially in the pool) and an activity area with a variet of outdoor activities. We didn't go on any excursions, but there were many to choose from. Definitely make your dinner reservations when you check-in, so you don't have to eat dinner at the buffets every night. The buffet food is pretty decent, but a lot of repetitive items from meal to meal. I would definitely recommend the Mexican restaurant, Mexico Lindo, and the Spanish restaurant, La Fuente, to dine in. The Italian place and the Steakhouse were all right. We loved that Strikers, the sports bar, was open 24 hours. Makes for a great hangout on a rainy day.....you can watch a number of games, enjoy the snack bar, or play a game of pool. The staff throughout the resort is pretty unintrusive. Some of the front desk staff and casino window staff are not super friendly, but are willing to help. Read more

I booked a Premium Jr Suite to attend a destination wedding. This hotel is listed as a VIP Access hotel, but the hotel didn't honor the Expedia Elite status & let us know that we needed to pay extra for the VIP upgrade package. The staff was not willing to help when we asked for simple amenities to our room. We called for toiletries and towels on 4 […] different occasions, they never came. Our safe was broken, and it took 4 hours & 3 people to drill it open (because they did not know how else to fix it). One day, the towel area would be out of towels and they would ask us to come back every 15 minutes- except by the time I had a towel it was 2 hours later. These experiences really put a cloud on my 5 night vacation. The beach that the resort is on- beautiful. The grounds are well-kept. The gym is clean. The food left a lot to be desired. If you live in a major city such as Los Angeles, you are spoiled by GOOD food. Don't expect this at the resort. If you don't pay for a premium upgrade, you will be limited to the restaurants where you can eat. Breakfast was my favorite meal of the day, but after 6 days at the breakfast buffet I was ready to go home. The Cigar, Coffee, and Rum bar was the best place to get a cup of espresso. This is a great place to relax, lay on the beach, enjoy light water activities, and lounge at the pool. I would recommend it to couples that are comfortable w/each other as the bathroom is designed like a glass stall- open at the top and no private door. Read more

Disliked having to make reservations for restaurants. Since being in DR should have had more latin/carribean music and entertainment, like it was years before. We go there to feel the Dominican warmth; otherwise we would rather go somewhere else in the world. Why do I want to go to DR and feel like I am in Las Vegas, Paris, Spain, etc.? OK, there is […] a beautiful disco. But why they don't have a second choice with more Caribbean/Latin flavor, like they had before ~2005-2008? Dominicans are naturally prompted to dancing and singing. Use those attributes to entertain people. I am sure people from all over the world would love to learn from them and have a good time too. Please let me know if there are any other resorts in Punta Cana which still keeps the DR flavor, we would rather stay there.
