"Good value for money"

The accommodation is very well situated for seeing the old city. Everything is in very good proximity. Accommodation is neat and reception professional. Only negative was the pillows but that is not the most serious issue.

It has all the basics you need. Well priced. Located near all the attractions and transport, trams, tour busses, city busses and underground. Easy to find. Have to ask for extra pillow, as they are very soft

The location is good - while there is little directly outside your door, the Pension is strategically located within walking distance of many attractions and you can easily hop on and off trams and subways. The rooms are basic and feel a little like staying in a friend's apartment. Not quite a college friend but not quite an adult either. Furniture, decorations and fixtures have some style but are cheap and after a string of guests they are in need of repair or replacement. The sheets were threadbare with small holes in places and the bathroom countertop is starting to separate from the wall. Our phone didn't work. The room and building are beautiful with huge (2.5m?) ceilings and the rooms have full-sized old doors that open to the street. We visited in winter but this would be a great feature in the summer. The shower is superb - plenty of hot water and all the flow and pressure you could want. But there is a very loud pump that kicks in and out to move the used shower, sink and toilet water. It turns on and off for minutes (10? 15?) after you use any water, so going to the washroom in the middle of the night will haunt you with intermittent mechanical noises for way too long as you are getting back to sleep. The two staff that we interacted with at the front seemed bored. Upon checking in we weren't told about breakfast (bread, meat, cheese, cereal, coffee, €8), wifi access (which is free but hit or miss), or the fact that there is nobody at reception and nobody to call after 8pm. There is also no cleaning service, which surprised us (maybe this is on their website?) but it's not such a big deal, we only stayed two nights so didn't need new towels or anything like that. While this all sounds very negative, the Pension Riedl was fine. But I'm sure there are better places. We will search a little harder next time.

We booked for two nights and left in a hurry after the first night. We moved to a far better hotel in the middle of the city and even paid less! Even if you are only looking for a bed for the night, please just look elsewhere. If this was a 50-euro-per-night hotel in Vienna, I'd say, you get what you pay for, but with breakfast, we paid 109 euros for one night! The room is very small and unattractive in comparison with what was in the pictures. The toilet which was very cramped, gave out a bad stench and weird sounds. For lack of a proper door, the owner solved it with a plastic accordion door which does not give anyone privacy. There's a skull drawing above the toilet pot to warn you that you should not throw anything but a toilet paper in there. To the far right of the skull is an open socket. When you take a shower, the water almost does not subside. The water basin is in the bedroom and not in the bathroom. All over the room (we had room 3 by the way), you'd find cheap stuff that need to be changed, like a towel bar that's falling apart, but obviously is not of importance to the owner. The bed looked comfortable but when you lie on it, it sinks. This is not a place that is committed to make guests feel welcome. The only commitment that this place has is to make money. So if you want to enjoy your trip to Vienna which is a very beautiful city, please, please, stay elsewhere.

I stayed here twice in 2011 and found it very good value for a decent room in such a central location. The electronic access system worked fine and staff were helpful. This is a small pension in a historical building, so do not expect too much luxury. Nevertheless, I enjoyed both stays here.
"A Gorgeous Pension"

This pension was not only gorgeous, but in a perfect location with a wonderful staff, especially Dushaun. The price was exceptional for the location in Vienna. From the front door and foyer, to the grand building and room, we were not disappointed. I would recommend this property to everyone and definetely use it again when I return to Vienna. We had the Schoennbrunn room which was huge with a balcony. The bathroom was a good size for a pension and the bedroom was massive...plenty of room for 3 women. I see the Callaghans also had the same room as we did and described it at massive.
"Staff Good; Accommodation Lousy"

We were booked into Room 9 by our travel agent. On the plus side, the bathroom was modern and efficient. The bed was reasonably comfortable, and we didn't note any bed bugs. Also, we didn't have to climb over each other to get into the bed (as they room 3 occupants did). On the down side, we barely fit in the room -- there was space only for the bed and a wardrobe. From looking at pic of the outside of the building, we figured this couldn't be bad. Surprise Surprise. The building is an office building with Pension Riedl occupying part of the 4th floor. While we were there, we saw Room 10 -- which the folks from Scotland enjoyed very much -- and it was very spacious and inviting. If you want to stay here, that's the room I'd recommend. Breakfast was just OK. Not much variety and basic grocery store fare. The lobby is tired, dingy, and frankly ugly. No place to hang out if your room is as small as ours was. They did provide us with free internet -- which worked fine. Location is so-so. We could walk to the main streets and attractions, but it was a good hike. I guess it all depends on what you are willing to pay. We were willing to spend a little more, and our travel agent didn't do a good job with this booking.

When my husband and I booked this we were a little anxious as they gave us instructions how to get in to the hotel like something out a spy movie!!! We were in room 10 and when we opened the door from the outside we were both amazed at the size of the room - it was massive - it was like an apartment. The room and bathroom were very clean and the hugh rain shower we had in the bathroom was brill. We can not fault this hotel at all and through our travel around Europe last month we both agreed this was the best hotel room we stayed in over 9 cities.....
"What you see isn't on the website isn't really what you get."

We stayed in room 3, just like Sue'n'Pete and when we arrived, we were shocked when we saw our room. It was nothing like what we saw on their official website. The room is very small. This room isn't suitable for 2 travellers. We had 2 luggages and there was hardly and space to put them. The condition or the room and the furnishing was poor. It definately doesn't deserve a 3 star rating. The best part was the bathroom. Due to poor piping, every time you flush the toilet, some water would splash up the shower drain from the toilet bowl, we found that very disgusting. One side of the double bed is against the wall so one person has to climb over another person as mentioned by sue'n'pete, pretty inconvenient. We find their photos on their official very misleading compare to what we got. I would not recommend this pension, just incase you get something like us. However, Vienna is a beautiful city. We definitely didn't let our accommodation ruin our trip. We had a great time out in the city.
"Booked 4 nights - Stayed only one!"

Having read their website - this pension looked quite promising (albeit some tripadvisor reviewer comments did make me wonder). My initial email was responded to quite quickly & was informative. On arrival, all looked quite good - a beautiful building in a quite area. Then after arrival in the actual pension, we began to have some doubts. 'Mine host' took us to our room (No 3) which had an external door that you would be unable to open if your neighbour had opened their door! He gave me 3 keys & left without a word. On looking at this room it was no wonder: Very small (so cases on top of the wardrobe - led me to find a few months worth of dust), Very cheap furniture & with the wiring around the room & under the bed = Dodgy is an understatement! The en-suite shower / loo was at best from a caravan & just as noisy & also Very small. There was no air-con - not even a fan! On asking, Mine Host said no other rooms were available & as we were very tired after a long train journey, we decided after a meal out that we would only stay the one night (albeit we'd paid for 4), in a bed that one had to climb over each other. We left the next day very disappointed (However we did get some money back via the travel agents in due course). I cannot comment on the renovated rooms but would NOT recommend these 'cheaper' rooms to anyone. Had we known this was what we were getting (rather than the pictured website rooms), there is no way we would have even considered this pension. 3 stars - Not with this room & Not in our book! We cannot recommend this pension .. However, Vienna is well worth the visit & we would definitely go to this city again.
