I stayed here one night for a business trip to Rome, NY. Overall, it was a pretty standard hotel experience. I slept well and felt rested and ready for my meeting in the morning. The bed itself was a bit thin and bowed in the middle, so I was definitely happy to be back in my own bed when I got home. I need to talk a bit about the shower. I don't know […] how it was in most rooms, but my shower head had two settings. I could either have a useless wide spray that was basically a ring of water too wide and spread out to be useful, or I could have a high-pressure single-stream exfoliating blast that sent water droplets ricocheting off of me and everything it touched and bouncing in every direction, including up my nose. I opted for the latter because at least then there was pressure. Okay, now I'll talk about the fitness room. It got the job done. My legs were stiff from four hours of driving, and twenty minutes on the stationary bike helped me limber up again. The seat on the bike slid down a peg or two every couple of minutes. I'm not sure if it was supposed to do that. I'm guessing not. Aside from that, the equipment was clean and in working order. Finally, there was breakfast. They had eggs, potatoes, and all the bacon you can eat, along with yogurt, coffee, fruit, bread, juice, and probably other things I'm forgetting. The grand lobby, high ceilings, and old bar room are from another era. the place is still in reasonable showing acceptable signs of age. My room had a modern hotel bathroom and was clean and quiet.

Hotel looks ordinary on the outside but inside a huge beautiful lobby greets you......gorgeous Victorian style, marble, high ceiling with elegant crystal chandeliers from days gone by. Staff was very pleasant. My room was unusually large, recently remodeled and clean. My husband and I were very happy with our stay. The room was small but excellent. The AC was on and the room was cool and pleasant...reminded me of a room we had in San Fransisco years ago. I had stayed at the Hotel Utica several years ago and it was a truly beautiful place. The lobby had a marvelous collection of Tiffany lamps, two colorful parrots and a wonderful historical display about the hotel's storied past. Now most of the Tiffany is gone, parrots have died (sad!) and the history display has much less in it and is hard to find. […] In addition, the restaurant was great in the past but now is closed except for a very poor quality breakfast buffet. Room itself was nice. As with all hotels, shower water pressure stunk. There was no internet access and the remote for the TV didn't work. I couldn't check in until 4:30pm and there was a long line of angry people that couldn't check in as well. My family and i really enjoyed the "Look" of the hotel. Unfortunately, we did not get to spend alot of time there. We arrived late and check out was at 11 am. Our room was large and clean. We were dissapointed with the continental breakfast with the only protein being mediocre eggs. They did not seem prepared for a full hotel of guests. Our main problem was with the cleaning of the room. Our first day the room was cleaned while we were out. Probably one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed in and I stay in at least one a week every week. This hotel is nice from the outside and even in the lobby BUT my god was my room gross. The chair to the desk fell apart the desk had wobbly legs, the bed was hard and I got two old thin pillows and hard sheets. The Hotel was beautiful, however, the rooms could use a serious makeover. The furnishings were old and not in a good sense. There was no microwave and no refrigerator in the room. The bedspread and drapes need to be replaced. They look as if they were purchased from a second hand shop. The breakfast was not good. The rooms were actually exceptional - lovely, roomy, clean,quiet, no complaints. The complimentary breakfast had a small selection, but was very good, The staff was helpful, able to recommend places to eat and give pre-printed directions to places their customers may want to go. As for other amenities, however, […] the hotel failed, in that the treadmill in the gym did not work and the vending machines on ALL floors were either sold out or not working, but no signs indicated this (I thusly lost two dollars in one machine that claimed to be "vending"), The plastic cups supplied in the room were so flimsy that a normal effort to just get them out of their plastic wrap easily caused them to crack!. If the vending situation and gym equipment had worked and the glasses in the room adequate, I would be able to say it was a 5-star stay, but unfortunately, the little things that frustrate really took away from an otherwise wonderful hotel. We went to Hotel Utica for a quick, convenient one night getaway and it was perfect for us. It is a very historical hotel and the lobby is wonderful! The room was small, but clean and the bed was fairly comfortable - could have used a comfortable chair and another light. The Hotel Utica was restored a few years ago to its original grandeur. The lobby and dining areas are gorgeous, the rooms are large and each one is unique. Breakfast is more than just a plate of donuts. Everyone is very friendly and informative.

Utica is my hometown, and it is a sad place. Hotel Utica tries to recapture some of Utica's lost grandeur, but it is an uphill battle. The room was fine, and the staff was very helpful. One thing I didn't like was the plastic cups for juice/water at breakfast and the styrofoam cups for coffee in the room - not environmentally friendly and not befitting […] what is supposed to be a classy hotel. We drive through NY state a great deal and have stayed at dozens of boring roadside inns and motels over the years. We decided, for a change, to try the Hotel Utica and are glad we did. It may not be the most fancy, new or trendy place, but it has something no Courtyard or Fairfield or Days Inn has: Charm and character. Built in 1912, the original […] hotel must have been a happening place. I can imagine travelers from NYC or Boston driving across the state to Niagara Falls for a holiday, and stopping in at the Hotel Utica in their Model T Fords for the night. The hotel has done a great job preserving the original lobby, bar and restaurant complete with mosaic tile floors and gorgeous chandeliers. When you walk into the hotel you feel like you are stepping back in time and can imagine hearing a jazz band playing and someone serving up gin and tonics at the bar. Those days are gone, though, so I am sure there isn't the money to keep up the rooms anymore. Ours was comfortable enough, with a newly redone bathroom, but the bed, rugs and furniture could use a refresh. The included breakfast was decent (eggs, sausages, cereal) but there were no staff members around to welcome us to the dining room or clear dishes--surely a symptom of a tight budget. The Hotel Utica is unique and an important part of American history. I hope travelers will continue to stay at this hotel (we will) to keep supporting it, so that one day it can be restored to its former glory. Read more
