"a long way from anything"
Nice clean hotel, great staff/owners, good food, basic room, but it was clean. This hotel is a long long way from anything. Free wifi in the lobby, could not get it in room on laptop or our 2 phones. Room 312.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

We made a last minute decision to visit the area for two nights and booked through Booking.com!! The hotel didn't seem to have notification of our arrival. Luckily there was a room available. Don't bother with Booking.com. Contact the hotel itself or use their own website. Lovely location, friendly staff and excellent food both in the bar and the restaurant. The breakfast was really faultless and caters for all tastes. My full Irish was excellent. The waiting staff always ready to top you up with excellent coffee. Same with the dinner in the bar or restaurant. Really outstanding and served by lovely people. If we get chance we will stay for longer next time.
"Perfect family reunion"
We stayed at carna bay hotel from 5th -8th of August There was 11 adults & 2 children in our party. My husband & I shared an interconnecting room with our 2 children it was an ideal set up. From the minute we arrived staff were so welcoming & informative of where to go for local beaches. We ate in the bar every night huge portions great variety on menu & food was perfect & even catered for my mum who is gluten free. We couldn't recommend hotel enough & we look forward to returning again. Carna is a beautiful part of Connemara & is unspoilt.

Let's start with the positives. The hotel staff are friendly and welcoming. We had notified reception that we would be late arriving, 8.30 and would need dinner, as the restaurant closed at 9. However, when we did arrive we weren't hungry enough for dinner! That was no problem, and we had bar food instead. The Thai stir fry was good. The feta salad tried too hard, with a mixture of fruit and salad and cubes of not crumbly feta. In the bar I read a newspaper article from 1970 announcing the opening of the hotel. In some respects I think the hotel is stuck in a time warp, pine furniture, bar style, carpets everywhere, including the dining room, scuffed paint. I was worried when I read conflicting reports of uncomfortable beds, but took the chance anyway. Unfortunately, I have to report that our bed was very uncomfortable, quite lumpy! The toiletries were in sachets, which didn't appeal to me, paying top price for my hotel room. Breakfast was only average. We were in the dining room half an hour before finish, but it seemed the cooking had been done for the morning. The rashers were hard and other cooked meats were nearly cold. One of the reasons we chose this hotel, over Clifden was that the website mentioned locals coming in every evening with music singing and dancing. Admittedy it was a Monday night, but there was no such atmosphere. Pity. On checkout I wasn't asked if I enjoyed my stay. If I had been I would have let them know my opinion. We stayed here as part of a 5 night tour of Ireland. This was the most expensive night and certainly not worth the price.

We recently had a confirmation party in the Carna Bay. The staff were lovely, the food was great, plenty of it and excellent value. A wonderful experience. Thank you, Michael, Mary and staff. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. We did'nt sleep at the hotel so cannot rate the sleep quality..but 5 stars for service and value.

If you wish to get away from the mad world then Carna will be the place for you to stay. The hotel is well located on the beautiful coast of Connemara. There are white sandy beaches within easy access and in most cases they will be deserted. A great place to unwind, do some bird watching, photography and generally chill out. This hotel with its friendly staff provides the perfect base to eat well, sleep well and relax in convivial surroundings. If you wish to travel to other lovely villages, then there will be plenty of choice, following a very scenic coastal route. I will certainly be back next year for another visit.

Stayed at the hotel while visiting family in the area. Second time for me -last time was 10 years ago. I was delighted to discover that the hotel was just as convenient, just as tidy, and still serves delicious meals! The staff is also just a friendly and helpful. I just love this hotel!
"Tired, dated and expensive"

Stayed here as part of a package with Stena. The hotel is situated about 14 miles off the main n59 road, down a very narrow road. There is little to do in the area and walking is a bit hit and miss as foot path indicators are non existent! The room was clean if a bit sparsely furnished. It was very hot and stuffy in the bedroom at night with no air circulating. Care is needed because of the midges! The shower was cold to luke warm. The food was tasty but very expensive at 66 euros for a 3 course meal in the dining room and the wine prices for an Australian Cabernet Shiraz was 23 euros but then there is a 10% service charge on top making the total cost for a simple basic 3 course meal with wine and coffee around 93 euros. We were the only people in the restaurant on two nights! Steaks were an extra 7 euros + service charge! Although the staff were friendly they were busy running between the dining room and the bar. We were alone in the dining room for most of the night! The breakfast was sort of self service by approaching the hot plate and the sausages and black pudding was carefully counted out on the plate by the waitress! It was tasty and there was a choice of scrambled or fried eggs. We ordered a packed lunch of ham and salad sandwiches on brown to take away. We got a slice of ham on white wrapped in tin foil in a carrier bag and our flask was filled with tea. No salad and costing 16 euros! When we queried this there was an apology but no discount for getting the order wrong! There is a bar which serves food but this is usually crowded by locals. There was a wake in the hotel on one of the days and being British we felt very unwelcome.

On a recent trip to Ireland I stayed at the Carna Bay Hotel and enjoyed all that Connemara had to offer. What a beautiful place! If you are traveling to Ireland, put Connemara on your list, and then add the hotel too! Food was delicious, the beer cold, staff more than accommodating and the atmosphere was extremely friendly and welcoming! The rooms were well kept and clean, and fresh towels were made available each day. I would highly reccommend the Carna Bay Hotel to anyone staying in the area! Fantastic stay!! Katie Boston,Ma
""Food, Glorious Food""

I very much enjoyed my stay at the Carna Bay Hotel while on a Hillwalking Weekend with a group of 18 people. We couldn't have had a better location to see the beauty of Connemara, the heart of Ireland. It did surprise us all that Carna, was nearly the same distance again from Dublin to Galway. The Hotel served it purpose in every respect. Yes, it is a bit old fashioned but the rooms were comfortable and clean with TV and tea making facilities. The beds were very comfortable and tastefully dressed. The hotel has a small bar which opens out into a function room. We were fortunate to have entertainment on the Saturday night where we danced ceili, jive and old time waltz with the locals. It was great to see 17 - 70 plus up dancing together. No generation gap in Connemara! The best thing about the Hotel is definitely the food. Plentiful, wholesome, fresh, beautifully cooked and presented. Loved the fish dishes. I like the fact that the owner would come to the table to ensure that everything was alright. The staff were friendly and helpful. The only complaint I have with the hotel was the tea, but that can be easily remedied with a change of brand. I would most definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Connemara.
"Would not Stay Again"

While only a 3 star property, we weren't expecting a luxury hotel; however, the Carna Bay was well below what I would consider acceptable standards. The hotel has a musty odor to it once you walk in. During our stay, I think we may have been the only ones there. The rooms were very basic and after settling in we found hairs on the bath towels, a partially used shampoo in the shower, unwrapped bar of soap that may have been used before. The walls were grimy and when I opened the curtains to get some light in I noticed a brown substance caked on the window curtains. If I had not booked and pre-paid for this room, I would have left and found another location. We had booked two nights so we did our best to minimize the time we would be at the motel. The people were nice at the desk and in the restaurant; however, this does not overcome the lack of cleanliness in the room. The beds were also VERY uncomfortable, to a point where it was difficult to sleep.
