The Diplomat Hotel - London

Staff was extremely friendly and hospitable. Breakfast was amazing!!! Don't leave for the day without trying the British breakfast! The elevator was very old, but it adds to the charm of the hotel. I would definitely stay here again. It is a 10 minute walk to both tube stations.

I booked this hotel believing it to be a 3 star hotel, and on arrival seeing that it was well worn but with old charm, I thought it lived up to 3 stars. However, I have to say that my entire stay (4 nights only) felt more like more than a 3 star experience - a strong 3.5 and actually a little better than an (over-rated?) 4 star in London I recently […] stayed at. There is a graciousness about this place. From the double mesh door on the lift, to the sweeping staircase, to the personal service at breakfast in the well-stocked breakfast room, to the easy and helpful assistance from ALL staff, I was very impressed! BTW: I don't think I would like to return to find the Diplomat 'all polished up', as it would lose it's charm and it would then be outside my budget. I booked the last room at this hotel the day before I was due to stay there on the basis that the pictures looked good and the location in the middle of Knightsbridge surely meant the hotel would be at least reasonable quality (for the above-average rate I paid I certainly hoped so). I arrived to be told that my room was in the basement, which would […] have been fine had there not been 4 "velux" style windows, 2 of which leaked. Rain ensued and sure enough the water started dribbling down the wall. Clearly the window had been like this for some time as evidenced by the stains on the wall, peeling wallpaper/blown plaster and general build-up of mould. The room itself looked like it hadn't been updated since the early nineties and the same was true of the bathroom. On a more positive note the bathroom was clean, as was the room (apart from the state of the walls), and there was a nice welcome box of 6 chocolates in the room when I arrived. Breakfast was also very pleasant and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I can't comment on the rest of the hotel, but based on my experience of the basement room I certainly won't be staying at The Diplomat again, and I most certainly wouldn't recommend it to others. We paid full rate for the hotel room and still they tried to force us taking a room in the basement which was dark, moist and had clear signs of mold on the walls behind the wall paper. At the reception we were told that it was the only room available, but after some pushing, we got another room. This is not accaptable behaviour, why we must recommend […] that you choose another hotel. When check out we mentioned this (it was another person who checked us out) and he confirmed that normally people complain and the room is not a nice room. Paying full price per night is a not fair and we can only recommend that you try another hotel avoiding having your holiday destroyed by their way of treating the customers. Read more
