My wife and I split our stay in Manuel Antonio between Makanda and Parador. Makanda was beautiful, quiet and perfect for a couple's retreat. We stayed in Villa 5. The room was great - the bed was extremely comfortable and we had a nice view of the ocean and the setting sun. Breakfast was brought to the room in the morning. We spent one of the days lounging around the infinity pool / outdoor bar area. The pool area also has a view of the ocean, and like the rest of the place, is peacefully nestled within the rainforest. We also took the path down to the beach, although if you are looking to wade into the ocean it's a little tough as this strip of beach has a rocky seafloor. Overall, the place was great and we would highly recommend it to other couples.

The rooms could use a little TLC, some things could have worked a little better, but don't forget you're in a rugged environment . . . all and all great rooms in an absolutely beautiful location with a staff who seem to care. With the view I had a sleeping bag would have sufficed. The beach is a plus though definitely a healthy and occasionally precarious hike down and up. Critters abound. The pool is perfect. The restaurant is the outdoor pool area, and while the menu is limited, the food is good.

The Hotel Makanda was absolutely beautiful! We loved our villa and the spectacular view. It was very peaceful and serene. Loved the fact that it had its own private, secluded beach. Each day we were able to see the white-faced monkeys playing and entertaining us! An added bonus was having our breakfast delivered to our room each morning; very tasty! We would highly recommend this hotel to Honeymooners.

Pros: Our room was private with a small porch giving a wonderful view of the ocean and sunsets. Staff was very attentive to all requests. Con: the private beach was not especially accessible (300+ steps, I believe). I would strongly advise having a car at the site, particularly if staying multiple days, as the hotel is some distance from the town and steep hills make walking a less attractive option than you might think—taxis are readily available, however.

Makanda By The Sea is more than a hotel, these are private Villa's nestled in lush beautiful trees and flowers. Every Villa has a wonderful view of the ocean and the location gives you a morning view of many fishing boats going out. Your complimentary delicious breakfast is delivered each morning to your villa at your requested time. Meals prepared by their restaurant are equal to any five-star and can be delivered to your room or at the poolside/oceanview location. There are daily viewing of monkeys in the trees and an occasional sloth. There is also a panoramic view of the ocean from the pool. All staff go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Because of the privacy of the villa's, some do require several steps down the hillside. As the villa's are located high enough for ocean viewing, it is a hike to the beach. This is a very quiet, relaxing, great food, and wonderful service hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay at Makanda. We loved our outdoor patio, where we had breakfast each morning, relaxed in the hammock, and watched several monkeys eating in the trees. The pool was also nice and there is a very pretty view of the ocean. The staff members were great, very attentive. Would definitely recommend Makanda!

We enjoyed every moment in Costa Rica. The locals were friendly, we never felt we were in an uncomfortable situation. The food was great. The Bavarian Dark was ok but the rest of the local beers were sub-par. On a a scale of zero to ten, based on value of the trip I would say it was easily an 8.5+. The hotel experience was a 10. I would recommend the MbtS to anyone who likes the ocean view, privacy, jungle setting, and excellant staff all in one package.

Absolute beautiful, view amazing, bed very comfortable. We went during"rainy season" and didn't know it. We were the only couple there and had the resort to ourselves, and the rain didn't bother us at all. Breakfast in the room-delicious! This spot has beautiful views is very private yet close to lots of restaurants and shops as well. It has its own path to the beach but beware it is a bit of a workout I felt like I finished a Bikram class when I walked back up. Very helpful staff and yes the bartender is talented as advertised. Loved the room we did have to use a usb cable to use the intent in our room.

This could have been a dream vacation due to the luxury facilities, however, we stayed at this hotel during the low season and due to the low occupancy rate we had the unfortunate experience of lackadaisical service from the hotel staff. On the night of our arrival, the night reception employee was impatient with our basic questions about the facility and tours even though we had never been to the area before. The next day he forgot to order an early breakfast order for us that we had put in the night before, which made us late for our park visit that day. The kitchen prepared a "to go" breakfast for us to pick up at the front gate which consisted of fruit and fruit juice with no utensils and none of the other continental breakfast items we ordered. There was no apology even though we expressed our disappointment several times. The following day they closed the only hotel restaurant (poolside) with no advance notice. We were disappointed about that as we had come back to the hotel for drinks by the pool that afternoon, but the bar was closed. Since we only saw six additional guests at the hotel during our entire stay, and the night clerk playing solitaire on the computer, we expected much better service due to the highly touted "personal service" promises on this hotel's web site and marketing propaganda. A beautify and magical facility in the jungle, but lazy service.

Its not fair that I came here after being completely wowed by Arenal Nayara. Overall the property was nice. Our room had a rustic charm and was complete with kitchenette. I would suggest a little updating. Definitely not luxurious. If you want privacy and seclusion, these free standing villas filfill that need. Room 9 had a beautiful ocean view. There is nothing separating you from the wildlife. Definitely for the young and fit, expect a lot of walking up and down stairs and across gravel to get anywhere. The pool is beautiful, even though we never actually used it. The food was good, and the staff was attentive. Breakfast brought to our room every morning. We ventured down the harrowing steep trail to the private beach. The trail is not well maintained, and takes at least 15 minutes. Halfway down we were greeted by a family of monkeys! The private beach was small and serene and completely natural. Hermit crabs crawled everywhere. The gentleman at guest services arranged our excursions and was extremely helpful and accommodating. Overall pretty good. Honestly, I will be staying somewhere else the next time I am in the area mostly because I would prefer to be closer to the beach, less hiking, and a little more luxury.

The suites had such an amazing view of the ocean to wake up to. I thought the rooms were also very well maintained. The location was nice and secluded and close enough to very nice dining options. The staff were extremely friendly and the infinity pool had an amazing view at night. My only qualms were the menu seemed quite limited and a bit expensive for the area. Drinks also were overprice for the area, but I can say the service was extremely good and was never really wanting for anything from the hotel staff.

Stayed 2 nights. Room was beautiful, view was outstanding, location was convenient, pool was refreshing, food was delicious and staff were exceptional. We were visited on both days by monkeys who came by our balcony and curiously observed us. The pool area was lovely with staff providing great poolside service. We thought we would have used the kitchen facilities to cook a few meals, but we ended up having both dinners from the restaurant and they were superb. Breakfast options were excellent and beautifully presented to our room each morning to enjoy in the comforts of our own space and privacy. There is a private beach but we did not feel energetic enough to have to walk back up the steep hill, so we didnt go there. Staff were extremely helpful. They organised a parasailing trip for us which was amazing.

The hotel is located very conveniently to different restaurants and bars if you have at least a scooter. It's quite a walk and an uphill ride on a bicycle to town. Otherwise, everything you need is on the grounds: pool, in suite kitchenette, small restaurant, room service. It is gated and has access to a private beach, though the walk to the beach is down the hill about 400 meters. The staff is extremely helpful! Wish we were able to stay longer.

Makanda by the sea grew on me and we had a really nice stay and I would definitly go back. Upon arrival I thought it to be a bit tired and worn but the tropical garden setting (almost like beeing in a rainforest) and the good service provided by the guys at the pool bar made up for the minor issues I had with the property. We stayed in Villa 7 which lies directly beneeth the pool deck but to get to the pool you have to walk up several stairs and then down to the pool again. The view over the ocean and planted rain forest was spectacular and we saw howler monkeys, slooths and several tucans from our room and from the pool. The villa itself was a bit tired and could in my opinon use a makeover - make the kitchen area smaller, change the tiles in the bathroom, get a nicer sofa and put in sliding doors towards the deck so you can enjoy the view while eating breakfast. The decor is a bit dated but the room was spotlessly clean and the bed was good. The breakfast is served in your room which makes it a bit cold upon delivery. I would have preferred to eat it by the pool where it probably would have been a bit hotter and we could have eaten it outside since our villa did not have any chairs and table outside.

We had bungalow 6 with our own swimming pool and it was just great. From the magnificent view to the delivered breakfast and the nice people that work there. I felt at home and did not want to leave. It's very quiet and you feel like you are alone in this place. You can see the sunset from your own private terrace, it's beautiful! There were some minor start-up problems because the villa was just renovated, but they were all solved quick and highly professional. I would definitely visit again.

This series of units is located on a steep hillside with stunning views and a small beach below. Very private rooms. Almost never saw another guest, even at the pool. "Impressive hotel by the sea"

We stayed at the Makanda for 4 nights at the end of our holiday to Costa Rica. Having spent 1.5weeks travelling all around the country we wanted some time to relax before coming home and Makanda was the perfect choice. We stayed in Villa 2 which was beautiful and had the most incredible views of the Pacific. Sitting outside with a glass wine watching the sunset was bliss. The pool is stunning, as is the restaurant and bar which served delicious (though expensive) food. Breakfast was a bit of a novelty experience, though it didn't quite live up to the qualty of dinner and you have to get in quick to order it the night before if you're keen to have it at a certain time. The walk down to both the private beach and main beach wasn't the easiest and all uphill on the way back, though the monkeys in the trees overhead did help keep us going and it's totally worth it when you get there.

"Secluded villa, beautiful views"
04/07/15 sheila m San Francisco, California
This is a small resort, high up on a hill outside Manuel Antonio. There are 11 rooms. Ours was a villa (#1) and it was beautiful, clean with an amazing view, and a hammock by the window to enjoy it. Manuel Antonio is expensive, so be prepared to pay. We paid 4x the cost over a comparable hotel in Arenal; bit of sticker shock. Breakfast is included; delivered to your villa. It all feels very secluded. Tip: Make sure you get your breakfast order in early, and try to get the 'regular/full' breakfast. Only one room per 15 min time slot, and you may get skunked if you are trying to plan around a tour start time. The full breakfast is fantastic, the 'early' breakfast (before 7:30a) is a piece of crumbly toast and a bit of sliced fruit -- not enough to get you through a strenuous tour. Coffee maker & tea pot in the room help get your morning started nicely. Full kitchen w/fridge, toaster, plates, utensils, etc.. No microwave in ours. Wifi included. My biggest issue with the room: It was really hot and humid when we visited in early April. Had to run A/C all the time, and it's pretty loud. I would have LOVED to open a window at night, but there are no screens on the few windows that open. Way too many bugs. It would have been so nice to listen to the ocean, turn off the noisy A/C, and take advantage of a nice breeze, esp at night. There is a lot of wildlife and you really feel like you're in the jungle, so maybe there is a good reason for not putting screens in the window (animals eat through? IDK). We saw monkeys in the trees early one morning. That was very cool. You're pretty secluded and maybe a 15 minute drive down to the beach. Everything is hilly and a relatively strenuous walk in the heat of the day. There is a supermercado about 1/2 mile away (lots of hills to climb). I was wishing they had a golf cart or something to take you short distances. The roads are narrow w/no sidewalks. Public bus stops along the main road, 1/2 mile from the resort. There is a nice infinity-edge pool with a covered area for drinks & snacks. This area doubles as the restaurant and is open until 8:30p. One additional note: I saw no sign of crime, but the hotel obviously takes your security seriously. First, it's gated and no vehicles (tour buses, taxis, etc..) are allowed through. We had 2 locked doors to get through to get into our villa. There is a safe, bolted down, in the room for passports, jewelry, valuables.

"Beautiful 4 day stay at the Makanda"

Finished off our CR trip in Manuel Antonio at the Makanda by the Sea resort. This hotel was perfect for our needs (huge room, great food, helpful staff), close to all attractions and great luxury. Despite a small mixup at check in, Makanda was highly professional in all aspects and extremely helpful. Tip: if hiking to the beach below the property, take water shoes bc beach is very rocky, and prepare for a 20 minute hike in rugged terrain

This is an adult only hotel with rooms which feel isolated (even though they're not), with an intimate atmosphere and beautiful views to the ocean. The standard of housekeeping was excellent and unobtrusive. Breakfast was served to your room which was a bit quirky and different but much appreciated - personal preference would be to go to a dining room though as our balcony was very small and so we ate in our room. The slight downside for us was the menu selection at the dining area around the pool, it was restricted and consequently we chose to eat out for our two out of three evening meals. An absolute plus were the reception staff, Darwin and Natalia, they were friendly, extremely helpful and very professional, a real asset to the hotel.

"Relaxing end to our holiday"
03/18/15 Mike R Highworth, United Kingdom
We had 6 nights here at the end of a busy holiday itinerary and we loved it. Our studio (number 4) had lovely sea views and had pretty much everything we needed. The balcony was a little small, but plenty big enough for us to sit our and enjoy the view. The resort is spread amongst the trees and we found it difficult to judge how big it actually was - a plus point as far as we were concerned. We spend most afternoons lazing by the infinity pool which has good sea views and is pretty good for wildlife too - we spotted Sloth, Toucan, Frigate, Kite, Turkey Vulture and loads of smaller birds we didn't have on our list. There is constant lounge style chill out music piped around the pool area which we actually quite liked, but there are those who might not appreciate it. I think the hotel could consider whether to play the music from 7:00AM till well into the evening - perhaps just doing it during the afternoon might be more appropriate. The staff we all very helpful from the guy at the gate, the bar and restaurant staff, the cleaners, reception - all exemplified the Costa Rican service culture. We didn't eat in the restaurant, preferring to try out the local restaurants. Breakfast is served in your room which we really enjoyed above the normal buffet breakfasts at other hotels. There is a small beach about 10 minutes walk down through the woods - great for an early morning dip or you can walk to the beach that runs into Manuel Antonio National Park in 20 mins or so (taxi back because it's quite steep and can be very warm later in the day!!) This is an adult only hotel, we loved it.

"Very mixed feelings"

This was our last stop, three weeks in to exploring Costa Rica. Admittedly, we had just travelled from a simple, beautiful and tranquil Eco lodge, but we felt that we were in a different country. Makanda by the Sea is very smart and chic and not our taste at all, though taste is subjective. Any sounds of nature are cancelled out by the "lounge music" played all day and all evening. It drifted up to our room, which was sadly one of the closest to the pool area. The staff by the pool and restaurant were charming, helpful and smiling. Our check in however was not so good. Only by reading other reviews on this site now we are back in England(!) do I learn that there is a private beach! No one told us and there was nothing in the room information to tell us. We did try to go for a wander, but steps seemed to lead to other people's rooms and other people's privacy. There were no signs or any indication that there was a beach, which is tragic and really maddening as we are not really "pool people" and would have loved to have spent time there. On the positive side, the rooms are lovely and the view is wonderful, but altogether, too glittery, brightly lit and at odds with the surrounding nature

"Disappointed"

We saw Makanda under construction some 20 years ago and ever since, have stayed there in different villas. Makanda, nestled into the jungle, has been a wonderfully designed small hotel situated for appreciation of nature. Guest comfort has always been paramount, as has been serenity. A new owner is intent on making Makanda something it was not; a trendy, music filled hotel with increased numbers of guests filling newly constructed facilities. Some will like the changes. We did not, finding the new decor at reception and the restaurant to be gaudy and not unlike 1970s beauty salon atmosphere. Music at the pool masks the sounds of nature. A word about service. Staff members were courteous, friendly and helpful, for the most part. Drinks at the pool ought to be served with napkins. They were not. Music at the pool, a major distraction, ought to be optional at turned off at guest request. It was turned off, but then inched back on... Nothing stays the same. We will have the former Makanda to look back to, but not the new one.

"Oasis by the Sea"

Makanda by the Sea is a hidden gem among the crowds and traffic of Manuel Antonio. A separate comfortable and lovely cabin with a terrace overlooking jungle green and the ocean provides tranquility and beauty and easy to call home while there. A luscious breakfast to order is included and brought to the cabin and set up to eat while overlooking the sea. A gorgeous 10 minute walk down a lovely path and the beach awaits. Darwin, the concierge, is responsive and charming and helps with any needs. A tropical paradise.
