"Boutique facility in stunning location"
The rooms could use a little TLC, some things could have worked a little better, but don't forget you're in a rugged environment . . . all and all great rooms in an absolutely beautiful location with a staff who seem to care. With the view I had a sleeping bag would have sufficed. The beach is a plus though definitely a healthy and occasionally precarious […] hike down and up. Critters abound. The pool is perfect. Beautiful setting, excellent views of the ocean, nestled in a jungle setting. Saw more animals than at Manuel Antonio park.Genuine Expedia guest review
The Hotel Makanda was absolutely beautiful! We loved our villa and the spectacular view. It was very peaceful and serene. Loved the fact that it had its own private, secluded beach. "Beautiful Views; Responsive Staff"
Pros: Our room was private with a small porch giving a wonderful view of the ocean and sunsets. Staff was very attentive to all requests. Con: the private beach was not especially accessible (300+ steps, I believe). I would strongly advise having a car at the site, particularly if staying multiple days, as the hotel is some distance from the town and […] steep hills make walking a less attractive option than you might think—taxis are readily available, however. "Makanda By The Sea Visit"
Makanda By The Sea is more than a hotel, these are private Villa's nestled in lush beautiful trees and flowers. Every Villa has a wonderful view of the ocean and the location gives you a morning view of many fishing boats going out. Your complimentary delicious breakfast is delivered each morning to your villa at your requested time. Meals prepared […] by their restaurant are equal to any five-star and can be delivered to your room or at the poolside/oceanview location. There are daily viewing of monkeys in the trees and an occasional sloth. There is also a panoramic view of the ocean from the pool. All staff go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Because of the privacy of the villa's, some do require several steps down the hillside. As the villa's are located high enough for ocean viewing, it is a hike to the beach. This is a very quiet, relaxing, great food, and wonderful service hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very Unique Hotel with Amazing views!"
We had a wonderful time at Makinda. The staff, location and facility was all top notch. Please note that this is not a 5 star resort of your typical fancy hotel. These are small villas each set up with their own breathtaking views and all the amenities you will need and more!Genuine Expedia guest review
We really enjoyed our stay at Makanda. We loved our outdoor patio, where we had breakfast each morning, relaxed in the hammock, and watched several monkeys eating in the trees. The pool was also nice and there is a very pretty view of the ocean. The staff members were great, very attentive. Would definitely recommend Makanda!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"10 Days in Mid-May. GREAT!"
We enjoyed every moment in Costa Rica. The locals were friendly, we never felt we were in an uncomfortable situation. The food was great. The Bavarian Dark was ok but the rest of the local beers were sub-par. On a a scale of zero to ten, based on value of the trip I would say it was easily an 8.5+. The hotel experience was a 10. "Most romantic spot!"
Absolute beautiful, view amazing, bed very comfortable. We went during"rainy season" and didn't know it. We were the only couple there and had the resort to ourselves, and the rain didn't bother us at all. Breakfast in the room-delicious! Randal down by the pool was a wealth of information and a blessing to our trip!Genuine Expedia guest review
This spot has beautiful views is very private yet close to lots of restaurants and shops as well. "Beautiful accommodations but service lacking"
This could have been a dream vacation due to the luxury facilities, however, we stayed at this hotel during the low season and due to the low occupancy rate we had the unfortunate experience of lackadaisical service from the hotel staff. On the night of our arrival, the night reception employee was impatient with our basic questions about the facility […] and tours even though we had never been to the area before. The next day he forgot to order an early breakfast order for us that we had put in the night before, which made us late for our park visit that day. The kitchen prepared a "to go" breakfast for us to pick up at the front gate which consisted of fruit and fruit juice with no utensils and none of the other continental breakfast items we ordered. There was no apology even though we expressed our disappointment several times. The following day they closed the only hotel restaurant (poolside) with no advance notice. We were disappointed about that as we had come back to the hotel for drinks by the pool that afternoon, but the bar was closed. Since we only saw six additional guests at the hotel during our entire stay, and the night clerk playing solitaire on the computer, we expected much better service due to the highly touted "personal service" promises on this hotel's web site and marketing propaganda. A beautify and magical facility in the jungle, but lazy service. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Immersed in the Jungle"
Its not fair that I came here after being completely wowed by Arenal Nayara. Overall the property was nice. Our room had a rustic charm and was complete with kitchenette. I would suggest a little updating. Definitely not luxurious. If you want privacy and seclusion, these free standing villas filfill that need. Room 9 had a beautiful ocean view. There […] is nothing separating you from the wildlife. Definitely for the young and fit, expect a lot of walking up and down stairs and across gravel to get anywhere. The pool is beautiful, even though we never actually used it. The food was good, and the staff was attentive. Breakfast brought to our room every morning. We ventured down the harrowing steep trail to the private beach. The trail is not well maintained, and takes at least 15 minutes. Halfway down we were greeted by a family of monkeys! The private beach was small and serene and completely natural. Hermit crabs crawled everywhere. The gentleman at guest services arranged our excursions and was extremely helpful and accommodating. Overall pretty good. Honestly, I will be staying somewhere else the next time I am in the area mostly because I would prefer to be closer to the beach, less hiking, and a little more luxury. "Gorgeous room and view"
The suites had such an amazing view of the ocean to wake up to. I thought the rooms were also very well maintained. The location was nice and secluded and close enough to very nice dining options. The staff were extremely friendly and the infinity pool had an amazing view at night. My only qualms were the menu seemed quite limited and a bit expensive […] for the area. Stayed 2 nights. Room was beautiful, view was outstanding, location was convenient, pool was refreshing, food was delicious and staff were exceptional. We were visited on both days by monkeys who came by our balcony and curiously observed us. The pool area was lovely with staff providing great poolside service. We thought we would have used the kitchen […] facilities to cook a few meals, but we ended up having both dinners from the restaurant and they were superb. Breakfast options were excellent and beautifully presented to our room each morning to enjoy in the comforts of our own space and privacy. The hotel is located very conveniently to different restaurants and bars if you have at least a scooter. It's quite a walk and an uphill ride on a bicycle to town. "Great service by the pool and fantastic setting!"
Makanda by the sea grew on me and we had a really nice stay and I would definitly go back. Upon arrival I thought it to be a bit tired and worn but the tropical garden setting (almost like beeing in a rainforest) and the good service provided by the guys at the pool bar made up for the minor issues I had with the property. We stayed in Villa 7 which […] lies directly beneeth the pool deck but to get to the pool you have to walk up several stairs and then down to the pool again. The view over the ocean and planted rain forest was spectacular and we saw howler monkeys, slooths and several tucans from our room and from the pool. The villa itself was a bit tired and could in my opinon use a makeover - make the kitchen area smaller, change the tiles in the bathroom, get a nicer sofa and put in sliding doors towards the deck so you can enjoy the view while eating breakfast. The decor is a bit dated but the room was spotlessly clean and the bed was good. The breakfast is served in your room which makes it a bit cold upon delivery. I would have preferred to eat it by the pool where it probably would have been a bit hotter and we could have eaten it outside since our villa did not have any chairs and table outside. "Great for a romantic vacation!"
02/15/15 Maritza E Austin, TX
We only stayed here one night, but wow was this place spectacular! We were in room 3 and the room was extraordinary. We had a porch with a view of the ocean and the entire front wall were windows to the same view. It reminded me of a modern bungalow in the jungle. I just wish they invested in the beach property and provided chairs and umbrellas. It's a long steep walk, so a little more comfort at the beach would have been lovely. Also, I would recommend booking here if you intend to have a car, as you will otherwise need to walk up a very steep and windy road to get to the main road to try different restaurants and such. Taxis are very expensive (one charged us the equivalent of $8 to take us about 1/2 mile). Overall a wonderful place!
"3rd time and still loving it!"

After 20 years big changes at Makanda. This is our third year in a row at Makanda and we’ve found it our home away from home. It simply keeps getting better as we know more about Manuel Antonio and coming each year it seems we do less and relax more which is really the purpose of our year-end trip. It’s interesting reading other perspectives on Trip Advisor, we all have different likes and dislikes. One of the main attractions we have to Makanda from the very first trip is that you are in a very bustling tourist spot but smack in the middle of it you have an 11 acre property with 11 villas. If you want a lot of interaction with other guests you likely will not find it here. Perhaps a bit at the pool or restaurant. The beauty of Makanda is the “oh so relaxed vibe”, no lobbies with big groups going out on tours for the day. Makanda is definitely for the discerning traveler who likes a place where the beauty of nature is abundant. Nature abound at Makanda, you will see and hear monkeys, woodpeckers, lemurs and other wildlife on the property. On our first trip we went to Manuel Antonio Park (crowded, hustlers, not our style) to see all the animals, we saw nothing notable and everything was right on our property. Just sit on the hammock on your deck at Makanda and you are bound to see cool animals (no worries they keep their distance). The big news on this trip and word around town is that Makanda is doing a complete remodel including putting in private pools for the villas. The reception office is COMPLETELY remodeled and looks so cool, the old office was very dated and the new reception really hits the mark, lots of local materials mixed with a hip vibe. We had a chance to peek into one of the first villas that has been remodeled. It’s a very modern and slick look. The materials are top notch; carved wood doors lead you in with nice light marble floors. Pleasing wall finishes. The pool was not complete nor was the lower unit. We stayed in this unit (#8) on our first trip and it has been expanded to include 2 bedrooms. The lower unit will have the pool and the upper unit will have access via a staircase. Great for a group who wants to share the two villas, perhaps a bit awkward if you are the upper unit and there are strangers below you since you will be using the pool outside their windows. The original owners that built it 20 years ago did such a marvelous job. While staying in the villa you had a connection to the jungle and it was really the jungle that was the star and the accommodations melded very well with the environment. I will miss the old Makanda, ahead of it’s time 20 years ago and in need of an eventual refresh (in spite of excellent care and maintenance over the years). We’ve booked one of the new villas for end of 2015 and look forward to experiencing the new Makanda. I should note that I found the outdoor chairs an odd choice, we already had them in our villa this trip which was updated a bit with new AC, lighting and kitchen amenities to match the newly updated villas. The chairs belong inside; while comfortable they are a velour fabric. In hot climates the last thing you want to sit on outside is this type of fabric. IMO the only fabric that belongs outside is 100% solution dyed acrylic (namely Sunbrella fabric and the likes). It can get wet and stand up to the humidity and ocean elements. These are the same chairs in the office reception which are very appropriate in that application. Lastly, since making three trips I wanted to comment on all the stairs. YES, there are lots of stairs. If you are unable to climb stairs you are fairly limited at Makanda since it is built on a hillside and goes all the way down to the ocean (about ¼ mile down). We love Makanda because we get a lot of exercise going up and down the stairs. We tend to eat more on vacation and it keeps it balanced. The stairs down to the private beach have been vastly improved and it is much easier now. Going back up will get you huffing and puffing. If you are not quite in shape to do it take it in smaller increments. Go ¼ of the way up and rest, ½ rest, ¾ rest. This trip we did it each day and a few times walked non stop up and a few times rested in quarters. My heart rate was way high jamming all the way up. Doing it in increments keeps your heart rate more steady and probably better for most unless you are an athlete! As far as being remote, it really is not. We always have a car but you don’t need one. The road goes right up to the main road in Manuel Antonio and is a 10 minute walk. Right at the top is Emilio’s restaurant, The Falafel Bar and Café Milagro (these three are some of the best in MA and there are others very close). The restaurant at Makanda is also very good and the staff, Christopher, Melanie and Juan Carlos all a gem, sweet genuine Ticos! Leo in the office is always there to make sure everything is running right and goes out of his way to help you with any of your needs. I learned that Leo has been with Makanda for 10 years and he really “gets” the property, he was proud of it before and beaming now that changes are a foot! Great ambassador for Makanda. Note on safety since I read other posts. I feel 100% safe at Makanda. As soon as the sun goes down guards are posted in strategic places. There are motion sensor lights and cameras as well. They monitor which guests are on or off property and I believe when you are not in your villa the guards are keeping a watchful eye. The property seems fairly insulated to me but I am sure they keep up with aggressive security initiatives to assure safety to the exclusive clientele that visit this special property. Oh, and I do have to admit . . . I was taking a shower one day and a monkey popped his head up and was watching me through a high window. I think he was amused at what I was doing. He did not stay long, wish he stayed longer, way cute those monkeys!

I left Makanda hotel 2 weeks ago. It was a great trip. Maybe, it was the best one! I enjoyed myself, excellent location, the breakfast was great and the scenery was amazing. Staff were incredibly helpful, nice and efficient; especially in a place where customer service seems not to be a primary concern of the service industry, they really stood out. Superb views from our private pool, interior in hotel fresh and qualitative, tide up ideally.I would definitely stay again if I'm fortunate enough to pay a return visit to the city.Rest in this hotel was remembered as something very comfortable, fresh, cozy. Thanks a lot to the hotel staff!

Everything about this hotel is amazing and I highly recommend going if you haven't been already! We had a great week stay here last weekend. Now the hotel after the renovation and looks incredibly cool! We choose the hotel for guest reviews and photos, but were not sure that by the time of our arrival, the hotel will restore. And, when we arrived we could not believe their eyes! Renovated hotel looks enchanting! All repairs careful attention to detail. The comfort starts upon arrival. Helpful polite reception and all staff are so friendly. The rooms are spacious with very comfortable beds and have lovely décor. You are greeted every day with a different towel critter on you bed that always makes us grin. There are fridges and safes in the rooms. We had a fabulous private pool. It was a pleasant surprise. I would like to note that the Wi-Fi works great anywhere They have a great delicious cuisine and the service was excellent. Variety of dishes is impressive. The hotel is on a hill and have a gorgeous view of the ocean and real jungle around you. I've never seen so close to monkeys, sloths and other exotic animals. Feel like a hero of advertising "Bounty", because it is a tropical paradise! This place was magical! From the spectacular ambiance… It was an unforgettable vacation, full relax, good mood and happiness. Never tire of saying thanks to the excellent staff Makanda Hotel and definitely will be back soon!

A beautiful hotel on a hill overlooking the ocean, surrounded by jungle. We had luxury renovated villa, well-designed, with comfortable bed and a private pool. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Also there is a very nice private beach, with not many people. The restaurant serves excellent food and drinks, in large portions. The food, which was offered in the hotel was way better than in most of restaurants in town. Number of animals is higher than in National Park, there are several species of monkeys, sloths, toucans and colibri. We have also seen whales swimming in our bay. We felt very comfortable as there was very professional, attentive and friendly staff in the hotel. Most importantly, we felt really safe here. This is a great place for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. We will definitely come here again!

First of all I need yo say that this opinion is only representative of the time when we visited(Dec 2014). Hopefully, what appears to be a complete makeover has now been terminated and the enthusiasm that most visitors express about this hotel is, once again, justified. It is badly signposted, in fact we had to ask three separate people the way before we found it. On getting there, Reception was in a portacabin-type Site Office, and even though it was 3.00pm and the hotel appeared to have few other guests, our accommodation was not ready so we went down to the bar to have a drink and a snack while we waited. The bar( which also turns out to be the restaurant,) consisted of a few metal tables and chairs round a swimming pool. As it was still raining it was inhospitable to say the least. When the waiter came to take our order, they did not have the ingredients for a Mojito, nor a Margarita, and I could only have a Gin and Tonic because I was prepared to have it without lemon. We found our suite and then the rain began in earnest, so much so that we had to order our evening meal from room service. Two tenderloin steaks and a bottle of house red arrived, my husband couldn´t eat any of his, and the cost was 164 US dollars! Next morning we went to pay our bill because we could not stay another night of the four that we had booked,, and I had to wait 20 minutes outside the Site Office before someone came to prepare the bill !

What an amazing hotel. The rooms were luxury, the food was amazing and the staff very friendly ( especially the bar/restaurant staff who were first class, friendly and personal. Reading some of the reviews before we arrived I was a little worried that we would feel isolated. That's not that case, we stayed in studio 4 and it was private for sure with amazing views, but other guests accommodation near by making yes feel safe at all times. The main plus of this hotel is the wildlife, we saw more on our balcony than at the national park. Three different types of money's playing in the trees and x2 sloths in a tree outside our room. Plus free in room wifi......If your looking for a romantic getaway and you love good food and wildlife...this is your place.
"Hotel is under construction"
01/07/15 Ping1965 Chicago, Illinois
This hotel was our first encounter with Costa Rica. A truly beautiful setting on the hill overlooking the ocean, in the middle of the rainforest. Come in good shape and bring walking shoes because everything (the villas, the beach, the pool, bar, restaurant, office) is a hike (15 minutes to the beach) or a minimum of 40 stair steps away; we enjoyed that very much, but it is not for everyone. The villas are private, spacious and the view from the balcony is breathtaking. The forest and wild life is all around .The pool area is stunning and the food is really good. It is probably going to be a wonderful place to vacation, but at this moment it is under construction. We were the only guest together with another couple. Having Christmas dinner in the restaurant all by ourselves felt a little weird. When we arrived, the room of our 3 kids was under construction so they put them in a 2 person room with one 6.2 foot boy on the couch. After 2 days the kids room was ready and without our consent they packed their stuff in plastic bags and moved it to their new villa. The villa was stunning, but not finished. The private pool (!) was empty and the was no railing along the balcony. Our villa had not been upgraded yet, is was situated under the pool which meant that we woke up every morning by the noises of the cleaning crew above. My advice is: wait a little until they are done with the construction. When the construction is finished, and the service is up to par, I would probably give it a 5.
