The staff here is incredible. The hotel is incredible, the view is priceless. The only downside is the hotel is a bit removed from the tourist places so be prepared for long walks both up and downhill, but hey you get your daily exercise in this way.

"Beautiful Place - Great for Couple's Getaway"
My wife and I split our stay in Manuel Antonio between Makanda and Parador. Makanda was beautiful, quiet and perfect for a couple's retreat. We stayed in Villa 5. The room was great - the bed was extremely comfortable and we had a nice view of the ocean and the setting sun. Breakfast was brought to the room in the morning. We spent one of the days lounging around the infinity pool / outdoor bar area. The pool area also has a view of the ocean, and like the rest of the place, is peacefully nestled within the rainforest. We also took the path down to the beach, although if you are looking to wade into the ocean it's a little tough as this strip of beach has a rocky seafloor. Overall, the place was great and we would highly recommend it to other couples.

"Boutique facility in stunning location"
The rooms could use a little TLC, some things could have worked a little better, but don't forget you're in a rugged environment . . . all and all great rooms in an absolutely beautiful location with a staff who seem to care. With the view I had a sleeping bag would have sufficed. The beach is a plus though definitely a healthy and occasionally precarious hike down and up. Critters abound. The pool is perfect. The restaurant is the outdoor pool area, and while the menu is limited, the food is good.

The Hotel Makanda was absolutely beautiful! We loved our villa and the spectacular view. It was very peaceful and serene. Loved the fact that it had its own private, secluded beach. Each day we were able to see the white-faced monkeys playing and entertaining us! An added bonus was having our breakfast delivered to our room each morning; very tasty! We would highly recommend this hotel to Honeymooners.

"Beautiful Views; Responsive Staff"
Pros: Our room was private with a small porch giving a wonderful view of the ocean and sunsets. Staff was very attentive to all requests. Con: the private beach was not especially accessible (300+ steps, I believe). I would strongly advise having a car at the site, particularly if staying multiple days, as the hotel is some distance from the town and steep hills make walking a less attractive option than you might think—taxis are readily available, however.

"Makanda By The Sea Visit"
Makanda By The Sea is more than a hotel, these are private Villa's nestled in lush beautiful trees and flowers. Every Villa has a wonderful view of the ocean and the location gives you a morning view of many fishing boats going out. Your complimentary delicious breakfast is delivered each morning to your villa at your requested time. Meals prepared by their restaurant are equal to any five-star and can be delivered to your room or at the poolside/oceanview location. There are daily viewing of monkeys in the trees and an occasional sloth. There is also a panoramic view of the ocean from the pool. All staff go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Because of the privacy of the villa's, some do require several steps down the hillside. As the villa's are located high enough for ocean viewing, it is a hike to the beach. This is a very quiet, relaxing, great food, and wonderful service hotel.

"Excellent!"
We really enjoyed our stay at Makanda. We loved our outdoor patio, where we had breakfast each morning, relaxed in the hammock, and watched several monkeys eating in the trees. The pool was also nice and there is a very pretty view of the ocean. The staff members were great, very attentive. Would definitely recommend Makanda!

"10 Days in Mid-May. GREAT!"
We enjoyed every moment in Costa Rica. The locals were friendly, we never felt we were in an uncomfortable situation. The food was great. The Bavarian Dark was ok but the rest of the local beers were sub-par. On a a scale of zero to ten, based on value of the trip I would say it was easily an 8.5+. The hotel experience was a 10. I would recommend the MbtS to anyone who likes the ocean view, privacy, jungle setting, and excellant staff all in one package.

I highly recommend this hotel. The room was great. We stayed in a studio room. It had a small balcony with a beautiful view of the ocean. The pool was also very nice and relaxing. Every staff member was extremely nice and helpful. You can hike from the hotel to a private beach if you are in good shape. It was a short hike but there are a lot of steps going back up.

Absolute beautiful, view amazing, bed very comfortable. We went during"rainy season" and didn't know it. We were the only couple there and had the resort to ourselves, and the rain didn't bother us at all. Breakfast in the room-delicious! It has its own path to the beach but beware it is a bit of a workout I felt like I finished a Bikram class when I walked back up. Very helpful staff and yes the bartender is talented as advertised. "Gorgeous room and view"
The suites had such an amazing view of the ocean to wake up to. I thought the rooms were also very well maintained. The location was nice and secluded and close enough to very nice dining options. The staff were extremely friendly and the infinity pool had an amazing view at night. My only qualms were the menu seemed quite limited and a bit expensive for the area. Drinks also were overprice for the area, but I can say the service was extremely good and was never really wanting for anything from the hotel staff.

"Monkeys outside our room"
Stayed 2 nights. Room was beautiful, view was outstanding, location was convenient, pool was refreshing, food was delicious and staff were exceptional. We were visited on both days by monkeys who came by our balcony and curiously observed us. The pool area was lovely with staff providing great poolside service. We thought we would have used the kitchen facilities to cook a few meals, but we ended up having both dinners from the restaurant and they were superb. Breakfast options were excellent and beautifully presented to our room each morning to enjoy in the comforts of our own space and privacy. There is a private beach but we did not feel energetic enough to have to walk back up the steep hill, so we didnt go there. Staff were extremely helpful. They organised a parasailing trip for us which was amazing.

"Great Views"
The hotel is located very conveniently to different restaurants and bars if you have at least a scooter. It's quite a walk and an uphill ride on a bicycle to town. Otherwise, everything you need is on the grounds: pool, in suite kitchenette, small restaurant, room service. It is gated and has access to a private beach, though the walk to the beach is down the hill about 400 meters. The staff is extremely helpful! Wish we were able to stay longer.

"Great service by the pool and fantastic setting!"
Makanda by the sea grew on me and we had a really nice stay and I would definitly go back. Upon arrival I thought it to be a bit tired and worn but the tropical garden setting (almost like beeing in a rainforest) and the good service provided by the guys at the pool bar made up for the minor issues I had with the property. We stayed in Villa 7 which lies directly beneeth the pool deck but to get to the pool you have to walk up several stairs and then down to the pool again. The view over the ocean and planted rain forest was spectacular and we saw howler monkeys, slooths and several tucans from our room and from the pool. The villa itself was a bit tired and could in my opinon use a makeover - make the kitchen area smaller, change the tiles in the bathroom, get a nicer sofa and put in sliding doors towards the deck so you can enjoy the view while eating breakfast. The decor is a bit dated but the room was spotlessly clean and the bed was good. The breakfast is served in your room which makes it a bit cold upon delivery. I would have preferred to eat it by the pool where it probably would have been a bit hotter and we could have eaten it outside since our villa did not have any chairs and table outside.

"A nightmare if your room is connected to another room!!otherwise nice"
08/27/15 Lucy A
Pros: - very clean, spacious and private rooms - good breakfast - great views - nice private beach - close to a small supermarket - close to manual antonio park (which however I dont recommend, super touristy, its better to visit other national parks, such as Corcavado) Cons: - If you have dinner in your room, they wont come get your plates onces you are done until the day after, so your rooms stinks the next day. - Dinner is pretty bad (we didn't have lunch so I cant say), there are loads of great restaurants close by, so I wouldn't recommend eating at the hotel other than breakfast - Our room was connected to another room above us with a door, I dont know if this is the same for other rooms. The problem was that we could basically hear the people sneeze above us...We had super loud people for 2 nights, which ruined our stay there...So if you are a light sleeper, this is not the place for you!

Great hotel, great views, amazing secluded beach! Nothing bad to say about the hotel at all. Really gives you a sense that you're not at a big, crowded resort. We've been several times over the years and really enjoy the walk down to the beach. It is kinda steep though, but we typically need the exercise after eating all their great food!

What a place for a couple to stay! We got the no. 5 villa with a view of the rain forest canopy and ocean. Woke up to monkeys outside our balcony. Very friendly staff. Breakfast in your room. (can't understand how people are complaining about this) Infinity pool. Massive super comfortable bed. Wake up to the rain forest. Cant say enough good things about this place.

"Beautiful views and fantastic bed, but a few rough edges"
08/18/15 keviconn San Jose, California
I chose this hotel for the views and the seclusion, and I wasn't disappointed in that. We enjoyed gorgeous sunsets over the ocean from our room each evening. We stayed in studio 3, which is one of the less expensive rooms, but it felt spacious and well laid-out, and the bed was FANTASTIC. Seriously, it was a comfortable, king-sized mattress with luxurious linens, so it was a pleasure to sink into it every evening. The room had recently been remodeled, but it felt like they cut corners in some places. For example, the light fixture in the bathroom looked like a cheaper version of one I had bought myself in Ikea for less than $100. Things like that detracted from the experience a bit. Based on the pictures, I suspect that their more expensive suites are more luxurious from top to bottom. As for breakfast, the fact that it must be enjoyed in the room would probably be considered a plus by some people, but it was a minus for us. We would have preferred to have it at the restaurant, but that's not an option. We did eat one dinner and one lunch at their restaurant by the pool, and both offered good food and good service. We found all of the staff to be very helpful and friendly. We walked down to their "private" beach on the evening we arrived, and indeed it's a long trek that can leave you a bit sweaty, and the beach, though decent, doesn't compare to some of the other beaches in the area. Ultimately, we chose to go elsewhere when we really wanted to go in the ocean.

"Nearly paradise"

Splurged on this gorgeous looking resort. The grounds were beautiful and gardens stunning. Our room was a bit dated but partly renovated and had an amazing view. We were only paying for the basic room, so it was to be expected. We found out that the restaurant/bar was not open, due to renovations so we had to take breakfast in our room. Oh well, no problem, that's quite relaxing, we thought. Went for a walk down the treacherous path to the beach, saw and heard Howler monkeys..... Very cool. Beach was okay but the next little beach looked gorgeous so we tried to walk there using the hotel manager's directions only to get a bit lost and end up on someone's private property. Found the beach eventually and it was stunning. Back at the resort for an evening drink only to be greeted by power tools and various other building works. We asked about this and were told it would be finished by tomorrow. Makanda is far from the village where restaurants and bars are and the walk pretty steep, so lucky we had a hire car as there is no shuttle or taxi service. More power tools the next day!!! We complained again and were offered a bottle of wine and a promise there would be no more. It's not very relaxing by the pool listening to power tools. Of course there was more work going on the next day so once again we asked the manager to compensate us. He upgraded us to a palatial suite away from the noise, with its own pool and jacuzzi and gave us a free night. It was stunning. We felt very blessed and glad we whinged! They were very generous and apologetic so it made up for noise. We loved our last 2 nights. Also, Bogart the sloth that hung out near reception was a real treat. Once the renovations are complete Makanda will be amazing!

"Poor, poor service quality"
08/06/15 poncher26 Mexico
Went to Makanda with my family. Starting with the good stuff, there is only 1 remodeled room, and the pool area is also modern. Staff is friendly and the concept of the hotel is nice. They have huge opportunities to improve. You can only have breakfast if other room hasn't reserved the time you want or need your breakfast to be served. With only 11 rooms it is not much to ask. The price is really really high for the quality you receive. Old rooms with no curtains mean you have to get up at 5 am in the morning. Food in the restaurant is average to bad, and on Sunday they limit the menu to a couple of items (probably leftovers from the week), so don't count on having a regular menu on Sundays. Other than that, Manuel Antonio has a lot to offer, and definitely other hotels.

Both units show a "private pool"--but it's the exact same photo. When I called they said that the 2 units are one on top of the other and share the same pool and deck. Quite different if you're looking for privacy! I hope they update their website!

"Management in the "Dark""
07/11/15 Francine R
We visited Makanda in June, 2015 as one of four hotels we stayed in during our tour of Costa Rica. I had read mostly very positive reviews and were excited to stay at the Makanda during our time in the Manuel Antonio area. Beginning on a positive note, the hotel sits on a hillside with a lovely view of the sea. All of the villas and studios have stunning views. The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable with luxurious linens. Since we visited during the low season, staff was sparse but appeared to work hard to satisfy guests' needs. There was significant construction occurring during our visit, including associated noise, and staff indicated that rooms are currently being updated. Unfortunately, the renovations of rooms appear to be poorly planned and many design choices lack forethought. Management could seriously benefit from consultation with a good interior designer. We were offered an upgrade to villa 4 and were pleased until we went to the villa and noticed that the bathroom has a glass wall and thus there is absolutely no privacy. This might work for some couples, however, we prefer not to share the toileting experience with each other. While sitting at the breakfast table, the view to the right is a lovely sea view; the view to the left is the toilet. This is just one example of poor design. The deck of #4 has a hot tub, however, there is absolutely no railing around the deck! A slip and one would fall to their death; again, poor planning. After explaining our concerns to staff, we were offered our original studio; number 3. This villa is attached to number 2 with a connecting door that is locked. However, the patios of the two villas are divided by only a couple of potted plants so privacy is limited. I expressed my concerns about lack of privacy and was assured that #2 was not occupied. Unfortunately this was a lie as we heard the television playing later in the evening. The next morning I saw the other couple sitting on their patio smoking cigarettes which, unfortunately, we had to smell any time we sat on our patio to enjoy the sea view. After calling the office to express our concern about the smoke, we were given the option to move to another studio although when it was shown to me it involved walking down about 60 steps without a rail and then up another dozen or so. It was also positioned beneath the pool area so you listened to the music from the pool. We opted to stay in the smoking zone and they promised to move us to villa 10 the following day. Villa 10 was positioned far from the pool but was, by far, the most acceptable. Again, some poor design as the bath is done in black and the lighting is so poor it is impossible to apply make up at the vanity. All of the rooms we saw had four, low hanging pendent lights positioned over a very large coffee table(limiting floor space) so that your view of the sea while laying in bed or sitting on the sofa is impeded by the light fixtures. Yet another example of poor design choices. Many of the rooms have odd, concrete sofas with granite arm rests at the foot of the bed. They are not at all suited to cuddling or reclining and relaxing for that matter. Now, lets get to the "in the dark" problem. On our second day there was a heavy rain and the electricity went out at about 6:30 in the evening. Shortly afterwards, the electricity resumed and we received a phone call from the office informing us that the Makanda has their own generator which had been turned on as the rest of the street had electricity and it was strictly a problem at the hotel. Unfortunately, we were then informed that the generator would be turned off at 9:00. We were assured that it should be repaired by the morning. This was not the case and there was no electricity at 11:00 a.m. so I phoned the office to inquire about the problem. I was told that management did not permit use of the generator as it was too expensive and only for " emergencies". We were told to either spend the entire day at the pool or do an activity away from the hotel. Our question was, exactly what does the Makanda management consider an "emergency". Your guests have paid premium prices and are unable to stay in their room in 90 plus degree heat with no air conditioning. To make a long disaster short, the electricity was not restored that day or night and we spent the rest of our stay without electricity except for the three hours that management permitted use of the generator in the evenings. There was a clear lack of concern for guests' comfort from management and at no point were we offered any type of compensation for our discomfort. This hotel has the potential to be a wonderful destination for couples. However, a car is a necessity for anyone considering this hotel as it is far from town and the walk is straight up hill and not safe after dark. In addition, the hotel has no options for persons with even minor mobility limitations. You are expected to walk from the front gate uphill to the office. Other hotels in this price range would office a shuttle to guests. In addition, all of the studios and villas involve traversing either a moderate or massive number of steps. Most of the steps have no handrail and in the morning after the mist, surfaces are slick. Management would do well to use the services of an interior designer to help them better meet the needs of all couples.

We were upgraded to villa 1 upon arrival. It was amazing! There are truly not words to describe the wonderful times we had. From the catamaran, the in room massage (all booked by the staff), it was truly the perfect end to our trip. We were there off season, and we only saw another couple on the grounds once. It was perfect.
