We stayed one night at the Fairmont to give our BC student a night away from campus. It was fabulously comfortable and perfectly located for easy access to North End dining and snacking. "Hotel in the North End"
Overall this hotel is lovely. The location on Boston Harbor, adjacent to the North End was great. Had the opportunity to explore the North End which was a lot of fun. The hotel staff was very accommodating and friendly, made us feel valued as guests. Overall the hotel was beautifully designed, had a nice modern feel, rooms were comfortable and attractive. […] Would give 5 stars, except a door handle in the bathroom was loose, would almost disengage and bang against the glass when opening it. The hotel restaurant was very good as well, our dinner was very nice. Would also give it 5 stars, except that I found the lighting in the restaurant to be distracting. The color rendition of the decorative cove lighting did not enhance the food at all. Was eating a caesar salad w/lobster, the lobster looked almost grey…was a strange experience. Arrived at 4:00pm on New Year's Eve and was told - after going through the entire check-in process - that our room was not ready. Staff estimated 30-45 minutes. Lobby was full of very unhappy families and holiday travelers without rooms. The bar was full of suitcases and bored kids. I then proceeded to watch the entire New York Islanders hockey team […] check into the hotel and get rooms. Not cool. I asked the desk to call me when my room was ready. 90 minutes later, and no call from the desk, I called and was rudely told that "a large party checked-out at 4:30pm" and that "they were doing their best." Well, who's fault is that? Certainly not mine. At this point, we were getting close to jeopardizing our NYE dinner reservation. We finally got into our room at 5:45pm. Staff did nothing to even acknowledge our wait of almost two hours, without our bags, a room, or any useful information. I expect more from Fairmont. The room was fine, but the hot water was spotty and the shower drain backed-up immediately. The next morning, it took the valet 30 minutes to get our car from the garage. Not the end of the world, but again no-one seemed to care about the 10 families piled into the lobby waiting to go home. Great location, decent property, poor regard for customer service. Beautiful rooms, service and location but hotel restaurant is so-so. You must take advantage of the many great Italian eateries within a short walk. Our location at the Wharf (rather than downtown) was arranged due to activities planned In the area. We enjoyed being close to the Italian area for morning coffee and evening meals. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant; my continental breakfast was surprisingly ample but dinner at the hotel was average, I ordered pasta (hearty with beef but lacked […] flavor) and a salad. Our friend ordered duck which he said was average but his wife ordered fish which was fine. The hotel itself was nice, not luxurious. When we first arrived at the hotel by town car, the valet kept texting on his phone and basically ignored us. Not his job to greet guests? One odd thing was when we went to look for ice in the hall, we were told we had to order it from front desk which then compelled us to give a tip. Would have preferred self service for that task. "The Very Best Hotel Staff!!!"
Overall, my family of four with two small children had a very pleasant stay at the Fairmont Battery Wharf. The staff at this hotel was far and away the best staff I have ever encountered. I asked the valet for umbrellas so that we did not have to walk in the rain to dinner, he instead offered to drive us in a luxury BMW to dinner. When I asked for directions […] to the business center to print boarding passes, the front desk personnel instead offered to print out the passes for me. When I requested information about taking the water taxi to the airport, the front desk again exceeded my expectations, taking care of all of my transportation needs. Best of all, everyone treated my children like they were the most important people in the world. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone as a result of the exceptional service my family and I received. The cleaning staff also did an exceptional job with an over-the-top turndown service. The only issues that I had with the stay is that the room was not completely clean and the carpet needed to be replaced. There were some crumbs and dust in the bed frame near the box spring. The carpet had several unsightly stains, was severely worn, and was coming up at a seam. The room had an exceptionally luxurious bathroom with a great shower and separate tub. Got in late after making the reservation on Expedia. Had a good discount (505 --> 372) on a traditional king. Got to the front desk of the hotel and was told, "So sorry, we're booked up ! .................That's why we're upgrading you to the PRESIDENTIAL SUITE !!" Wow. What great luck! Because the room was booked on Expedia, the hotel was compelled […] to hand me the last room they had, worth $2,500 + per night, and at no further cost -- other than incidentals -- to me. I'm NOT kidding ! The Prez Suite has three rooms and about 50 sq m. of space. The main room has a lovely couch, two chairs and two ottomans, a secretarial desk, a 48" HD TV and stereo system, lovely decor, a guest half bath, a private patio directly above the water, all on the ground floor, and even a small telescope for looking out over Boston Harbor. Next to the main room is a sizeable conference room with 8 fine leather chairs, full bar, frig, etc. The separate bedroom has a very comfortable, plush, KS bed, hard-wood veneered furniture, another 48" HD TV/Stereo, walk-in closet/safe/iron/board. The bathroom is large and complete with French-perfurmed soaps, very nice walk-in shower and separate enclosed head. In-room service was great. The only thing missing is a microwave in the conference room -- no one's room service is hot -- and movable struts for angling the TV monitors. Very quiet room. Very pleasant staff.
