"We stayed over after the 4th of July"
Everything was perfect including the wine tasting and parking. We were happy to hear more queen size beds are soon to replace the full sized beds.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Staff is excellent"
This is such a sweet little hotel. The rooms are SMALL but well set up and clean and comfortable. The pics are very accurate. The service was great; I was treated like I was in a 5 star resort. I arrived late in the evening to a wine tasting, which was very welcome after my long day. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is a bit questionable at night. […] It's within walking distance of the convention center. One of their staff was even waiting at the front door at my departure, ready to direct me to wherever I was trying to go. I would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We stayed here for a convention. Close to the convention center...easy 10 minute walk. Room was very small for two people but staff and owner Larry made up for any inconvenience. Offered to move us but we declined. Whole atmosphere is welcoming and safe. Don't be put off by size (35 rooms). You are a pampered guest. Boutique ambience is charming. Complimentary […] breakfast and evening wine. Impeccably clean!!!!! Great coffee shop around the corner...Birdcage Coffee is a great place to relax. Again owner very gracious; makes his shop available to non- profits...knows sign language and hosts classes for the deaf. This hotel is a real find and we look forward to a return visit! "The staff is amazing"
I stayed for a conference in LB and this was a quick walk to the conference (about 10 mins away). The staff was so accommodating and friendly, I'd recommend this hotel based solely on hospitality, hands down. The rooms are European style (also if you're used to living in big cities, you're used to small compact spaces). There aren't a lot of frills […] in the rooms but the beds are comfortable and the space was fine for me. I'm not one to spend a ton of time in my hotel room anyway. The only thing I would say is that the sink is a tiny one and washing your face and brushing your teeth might force you to learn a little grace while at the Varden. A thousand kudos to the staff! "Cute, clean boutique hotel with friendly staff."
This is a small hotel - it's 3 floors (the bottom is just the lobby and breakfast area), has no elevator, and has a total of 35 small rooms; the one I stayed in didn't even have a closet for my clothes, just a drawer under the bed and a bar with hooks mounted on one of the walls. The bathroom was tiny, with a tiled stall-style shower, and the sink was […] outside of the bathroom, by the bed. At first, I was a little put off by how small the room was - I'd describe it as a clean, well-lit dorm room for one - but I acclimated quickly and found it surprisingly cozy (unlike the darkish, too-big, musty hotel rooms I'm used to at larger chain hotels...although I do appreciate the closet space and big bathrooms with counter space). The staff was extremely courteous and helpful, and the room was very clean. The windows open, which I consider a must for ventilation, and the remote-controlled HVAC system in the room did a great job of warming my room up/cooling it down as needed. Overall, I had a great stay, and I'd definitely consider staying at The Varden again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great Service, Style and Location w/ Small Sink"
Service exceptional, even the owner was out greeting guests. The decor was great and wish I had more time - didn't get to take advantage of the breakfast or wine tasting. The bed was very comfortable and the room was modern, clean and well maintained. My only complaint was the teenie, tiny sink that I couldn't wash my face in because of the shelf right […] above it essentially blocked anyone from leaning over. Regardless of the sink, i'd still recommend the place! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good Option for Couples and Business Travelers"
Friendliest staff I've ever met at a hotel. This place has character and a funky feel. Conveniently location. Rooms are very small, but they make great use of the space. Continental breakfast is good.Genuine Expedia guest review

One of the nicest independent hotels i've ever stayed,no was the nicest! It was the cleanest, very friendly helpful staff, beatifuly remoldeld room.my daughter lives in Longbeach and i will definitly stay here again, and was priced right. I highly recomend this hotel !!!!!!!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect for a couple"
Great staff. Tiny rooms, but really clean and modern. Feels newly remodeled. Good for sleeping, not so much for hanging out. But why would you hang out in a hotel room when you are in Long Beach? Right on the border of gentrified downtown and sketchy neighborhood. Parking costs, but it's right there.Genuine Expedia guest review
"A great Boutique hotel - no more travel lodge!"
The Varden, although located in a listed building has been completely remodeled and is very modern and minimalist. I was immediately struck at the excellent service provided by the front desk, very warm and welcoming and able to accommodate me even though I was hours early for check-in. I booked the lowest rate room which although perhaps is a little […] on the small side for a couple is fine for just one. No bath but a shower and toiletries are provided. There is wine tasting every evening and a simple selection of pastries, yogurt, juice and coffee provided for breakfast. Parking is also available just adjacent to the building. While the surrounding neighborhood is a bit shaky, the hotel is quite nice.Rooms are very small, but it's fine when all you need is a place to sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice but tiny"
The hotel staff is outsanding. The building has a nice new feel to it, but the rooms are just so tiny. Travelers need to understand that before they decide to stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
I enjoyed staying there a lot. The photos of the rooms are accurate. The rooms are not large.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent value and service"
I stayed here while attending a meeting at the convention center. The hotel is nicely maintained, and it's about a 10 minute walk to the convention center. The front desk staff were exceptional! In addition to being friendly and courteous, they made sure guests felt welcome and were very helpful in recommending restaurants and attractions to visit in […] the area. Job well done! If you want the status quo this isn't the hotel for you. However if you're looking for great service, updated 1920's (I think) architecture, and a downtown Long Beach location close to all the wine bars & restaurants the Varden is for you.Genuine Expedia guest review
Loved the hotel, excellent, friendly service. The only drawback was the drive through the surrounding neighborhood was off putting..not the hotel's fault, of course! Great local Mexican food next door!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great little place!"
Clean room, comfortable bed. Complimentary continental breakfast. Top tier service. Overall this was a fantastic little gem in downtown Long Beach!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great staff, free wine, tiny room"
The title of the review says it all. The staff was extremely friendly, and the hotel offers free wine tastings from 5-7 each night. The room is small (which I guess is what "boutique" means), and there is no closet. I was staying for an entire week on business, so the closet would have been nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect for business travel!"
I have never experienced such a friendly and conscientious staff at a hotel. Because it is a small, independent establishment, I expected that it might lack amenities...Not So! The hotel exceeded all of my expectations. Although the rooms are small, they are designed with perfect efficiency. I cannot say enough about the attentiveness and kindness of […] the staff. The bed was comfy. I enjoyed the continental breakfasts, delicious coffee, and afternoon snacks. I highly recommend this hotel for business travel or a couple traveling together. Very convenient to the Convention Center, shopping, public transit, and restaurants. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I usually stay at SPG hotels but with similar convention pricing to the local Westin, I decided to try the Varden, rated #1 on TripAdvisor. I was impressed by the service of the staff and free breakfast (mini muffins, yogurt, juice, etc.) The hotel and room was clean but small compared to most hotels I've been. The bathroom especially was standup shower […] only and felt awkward climbing into and out of with the toilet in the way. There was no closet and instead a protruding bracket with hangers was used. The desk is small but there is a chair and iPod clock radio dock. The bed is very soft! As for safety, this hotel is located in downtown Long Beach and for anyone who lives in a major city, the sight of homeless people is a normal part of life. There is no exception here but visitors should use common sense - don't flash cash, walk out very late at night, or loiter in unknown areas. Use the buddy system! There were several signs showing a 10 PM curfew for teens under 18 in the bar/restaurant areas. For the hotel itself, the entrance is locked late at night and requires you to swipe your hotel key card to gain entry. The parking lot is open (no gates) and the rooms do not have a security latch or private safe. Overall, if you're looking for a clean, minimalistic room in a renovated space, near public transportation, stay at the Varden! But if you value space, compartmentalized rooms, secure car parking and a fridge and microwave, look for a more traditional hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"would stay again/recommend"
It was a nice hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. We were there for one night for the formula drift competition, so it was great the hotel was only a little walk away. The room was very clean, good ac, nice set up, bathroom was nice and clean. The only thing was the shower was very small, I' m 5'10 and it was very tight. Plus the bottom lip was […] not raised high enough and the shower curtain didn't stick so after my shower the bathroom floor had about half an inch of water on it. But a quick wipe of our towels and it was good. I would definitely stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Superb customer service"
I enjoyed staying at The Varden. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff was super accommodating. At one point we needed to reschedule the shuttle and the front desk person arranged that for us, and helped us out of a jam we were in. This wasn't your typical hotel stay - at The Varden you feel like family.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great hotel, very clean, didn't like that I had to pay for parking that wasn't secure. Great location everything is 5 to 10 minutes away, walking distance. I don't suggest to stay in room 11 wich I was in I can hear everything in the lobby even the TV was loud. Otherwise it was a good stay but I would not stay here again just because I would like a […] better view out my window instead of an alley way. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small room great service"
Staff very courteous and helpful. It is a historic building converted to a hotel so the rooms are much smaller than usual. The price I paid was however as high as the Hyatt nearby. Will be good for a single traveler but for a family, the room size may be too constrained.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good hotel, with kinks to straighrten out"
Small hotel: needs a sign to point to Hotel Parking, I had to circle twice and took a chance, parked, walked into the lobby to ask if I had parked right, came back and so on....Surprised they do not realize this...also one window pane in the bathroom was not tinted, so a "free view" for someone in opposite building...weird.....no drinking water in the […] rooms or bar, tiniest water bottle I have ever seen given at reception if you ask (you just get one in your hand at check-in, go and ask for more, carry them in pockets)... very friendly staff though..fairly good breakfast included (baby muffins, orange juice and a Keurig machine).. "Fun stay and great value...don't overlook this one"
As most of the reviews state, this is a European style hotel. What does that mean? The rooms are compact - like an Ikea designed room with the most comfortable beds and pillows! (We actually checked out and went to Ikea to buy the same bedding for our home it was that good!) If you want a luxurious full service hotel with skyline views and spacious […] rooms, this isn't your place. If you want a small, quiet, efficient, quaint hotel with amazing and courteous staff - you got it. They serve wine in the evening, have bowls of fruit available, and continental breakfast in the AM (muffins, oatmeal, coffee, tea, juice). We were greeted every time we walked in as if we were staying with relatives. A 10 minute walk gives you access to dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops. We were impressed with the peace and convenience compared to the cost of staying in a luxury hotel for 3x the cost. Again, don't expect a big room with space to spread out! These rooms are small and cozy - only one person can fit in the shower at a time. The single sink is as small as a salad bowl, and the view out the old paned windows is a brick wall. But it is CLEAN and well maintained! We appreciated their efforts to save water and detergent by requesting you reuse your towels and sheets. We loved it for something different than a chain hotel that is like all the rest. We are DEFINITELY going back within the next few months for a stay-cation. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel but the surrounding area is not so nice"
This place is a small little boutique hotel room...with free complimentary wine hour and continental breakfast. The rooms are small, clean and just enough for the night. I would only recommend this room for just a place to stay for the night. Unfortunately, the surrounding area where the hotel is, is not so great and very close to the homeless bum resort […] (Lincoln Park). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Boutique is another word for small."
While they try to charm you with the words "boutique" and "historical" they are actually just words for "small" and "old". The room is clean but very small. There is no closet, just a wall rack in which you hang your clothes. However once you do it blocks the view of your TV. The bathroom is also very small, so small in fact my feet were sticking into […] the bedroom, which actually put me one step closer to the sink which is actually located in the room. The once good thing about having a sink at the foot of the bed is that is you scrunch down in the bed, you can actually wash your feet in the sink. The only plus to this hotel is that the bed was very comfy, which was great as I was very tired from having to walk up three flights of stairs since there is no elevator. The rooms toward the front of the lobby are to be avoided, as the noise coming from guest congregating in the adjacent breakfast area awoke me at 6:30 AM duing my stay. Otherwise, staff, room, were great.Genuine Expedia guest review
Nice place, clean modern rooms, close to downtown Long Bch. Great staff. Rooms are a little small but the bed was very comfortable. "Not your typical hotel"
I was traveling for business by myself and stayed for one night. The hotel was built in 1929. Dont be thrown off by the sign that says "Dolly Varden bath in every room" or something like that. Rooms are small, but have been repainted and all the fixtures are very modern...but small. The shower is very small. Clean. easy to control room temperature with […] A/C unit in the room, or just open the window. No smells. No problem with noise. Bed was comfortable. The parking lot is just next door so that is very easy to use. Good standard continental breakfast, however GREAT breakfast at the Omelette Inn that is one block away. I had the breakfast quesadilla, fresh made salsa, guacamole, sour cream, hash browns and forced myself to eat 2/3 of it. Staff is friendly and helpful. easy short walk to the convention center. Highly recommended for single traveller. Easy to get to, easy parking, easy check in, clean. All the basic covered well, just small. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Very Clean unique Hotel. The Staff is Awesome and they make you feel at Home. Treats everyone like Family. This is our Second time and whenever we go to Long Beach we will stay there.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great location, easy with parking right next to hotel; excellent customer service, and itty bitty teeny tiny rooms but they maximized the space well and made the rooms very comfortable. "European-style boutique with great service"
This place is a quaint boutique within walking distance to the convention center, and most of the restaurants and attractions. The decor is clean and modern with a European feel. Wine tasting and morning coffee makes for easy conversation with the hotels's other guests. The service here is the hotel's best asset, and the employees will help you with […] anything you can imagine. They are very personal and polite. The rooms make efficient use of space, and this could be seen as the biggest drawback. If you enjoy a lot of room to stretch and move, be warned this is not the place for you. If you don't mind a small European / Japanese style living quarters, you'll absolutely love this place. Everything is in working order and as clean as can be. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cool Hotel for a weekend trip."
Very cool hotel located within walking distance of the convention center and downtown. previous reviews stated that the area was a little dicey, but I didn't feel that way at all. Small room was very clean and comfortable, but the location of the sink made shaving and brushing teeth a little akward. The street noise took some getting used to and the […] guy next door snored like a chainsaw. The management offered to provide earplugs the next evening, but the white noise app on my phone solved the problem. The breakfast consisted of tasty mini muffins and yogurt and the coffee was very nice. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Quirky little hotel within easy walking distance of convention center and lots of restaurants. I couldn't figure out how to use the tiny sink directly under a glass shelf for shaving and there was no manner of holding water in the sink. "Cute hotel, very friendly staff"
I really enjoyed staying in the Varden. It had much more personality and was much more reasonably priced that the large chain hotels closer to the convention center.
