The smell in the hotel room was awful. I think it smelled like mold. There were ants in the room too. Beds were good as well as breakfast.

It takes about 10 minutes to drive from La Fortuna (and a taxi costs around 4.000 Colones). Quite small rooms but a lovely little garden. Clean. Very nice staff!

"wunderbare Lodge"

"Rural accomodation"
The hotel is a bit far away from Fortuna and the activities. We did not have a car so that was a bit of a problem although you could always use a taxi. In fact, it might anyway be best to rent a car anyway when you are in Arenal because the activities may be quite a distance away from each other. The room was fairly basic although we had a superior room. The superior here means that you have an extra bed for a third person. The room did not feel good for us. It was a bit run-down, smelled of cleaning liquids (which is good I suppose) and the shower was a bit dodgy (water+electrical wiring gives me creeps). However, the host took extra efforts to please the guests and make them feel welcome. Whatever you needed, he tried to provide it. He was always available. So, a bit mixed feelings: at best an average hotel but the host provided an exceptional service.

"Feine Gastgeber, Romantik statt Rummel"

"the best service with beautiful surroundings."
If you have a car, this is the place to stay. We did not and still stayed for four days, booking one day at a time. The hotel is about 6-8 kilometers outside of la fortuna. It has a nice pool, beautiful nature, all kinds of fruit trees in the garden, birds of all kinds just next to where you have breakfast, wifi all around the property and nice clean rooms with bathroom and shower. A brekfast is included that is good and sufficient for the average guest. A good typical costa rican dinner is prepared if you ask for it, but there is no menu. Mario and Ever, the main guys working here, were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They helped us mostly with all kinds of information, and of course tourbooking etc. But other than that we had conversations about anything and we really felt at home when we came back from our tours. And one of the best parts was the nature experience, I think we saw as much smaller wildlife in the picturesque hotel garden as we did on any tour we were on around arenal. And almost no traffic on the tiny road outside the hotel, witch means no noise except from the birds. ONE DOWNSIDE: The distance from la Fortuna makes restaurant visits a bit tricky. With a car there is no problem, but otherwise a taxi is needed wich is pretty expensive, around 10 dollars in each direction when we write this.

"Great Experience"
07/26/15 YAlejos Houston, Texas
I found this hotel through a groupon that offered activities, breakfast, and the staying in the hotel. Mario which is the person i spoke with to book everything was wonderful and available at at anytime when needed. Once at the hotel the staff members were great they were very friendly, the room were clear and the package was what we got. My husband and i had a great time in Costa Rica and the roads were good it didnt take long to get from the airport to the hotel. Y. Alejos

"A cozy spot to unwind after the many adventures in the area!"
07/22/15 evan29 Baltimore, Maryland
I found this hotel through the groupon that was offered in the spring and bought it for a belated honeymoon. The hotel is what it is and if you arrive with those expectations, I don't think you will be disappointed. As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel staff speaks only Spanish but are extremely friendly, hardworking, and welcoming. We were able to get by fine with our very basic knowledge of Spanish and a translator app on our phone. The room we stayed in was simple but clean. Fresh towels sculptured into animals and shapes greeted us every evening when we returned. The grounds around the hotel were beautiful with a few iguana sightings. There is even a river at the back of the property you can sit by and enjoy. I recommend eating at the hotel for dinner at least once as it is delicious but the same type of food is served every evening. Breakfast was always fresh with fruit, juice, coffee, rice and beans, egg, and bread. Mario wasn't there during our visit but he was easily accessible by phone (for free) and email to answer any questions we had. He went above and beyond in helping us with our requests, even rescheduling a tour we accidentally canceled. At night, the hotel is quiet and there isn't a lot to do. We did find the stores (there are 3 of them) a few minutes walk down the road and a small restaurant that was cheap and delicious. The road was still out during our stay making the taxi ride into La Fortuna around $20 one way. They were working hard on it and hopefully it will be finished soon. One way we got around this was staying in town after some of our tours as most of the tours leave from La Fortuna. It still meant paying for a taxi on the way back if we did this but it saved us $20. Briefly, for the groupon package, it was a great experience. All of the tours were top rate and very professional. The guides were amazing and everyone went out of there way to make sure we had the best time possible. I highly recommend!

I stayed here as part of package deal, where all my activities were planned for me. Mario had everything planned perfectly for me and kept in touch with me throughout, even though I never met him. The staff at the hotel were very accommodating even though they don't speak English, they try real hard to communicate. The hotel is out of town, so if your looking for the whole walking thing, not gonna work. There is transportation available into town though, Louis took me in and was there to pick me up at the time I requested. The trip for me was great, I will be back! The river behind the hotel is an added bonus, dont leave without hanging out there!

"A great way to visit Costa Rica!"
07/13/15 Maya J
This trip was truly amazing, and it would not have been if it weren't for the staff and the owner. Everything was planned and organized, which made it easy for my boyfriend and I to just relax, explore, and enjoy. The staff was so nice, and accommodating that even when my boyfriend and I missed dinner, they made us dinner anyway and left it in our room. I would definitely recommend this place. The hotel is a little bit far from the town so I would think about renting a car if you want to get around because getting a taxi to come to the hotel was near impossible. Other than that, I wouldn't change anything about my stay at Lavas del Arenal.

"Friendly people, quiet stay"
07/12/15 shnara
I stayed here as a part of deal I bought on Groupon. Mario, though not there in person, was helpful with the arrangements and also helped us plan our trips around La Fortuna. The people who actually work there are very friendly but they don't speak English. With little help from apps that translate to Spanish, you can get along easily. They provide very good food for vegetarians too. Just inform them (no carne, ni pescado, ni huevos) and you are good to go. It's a bit away from town (when we stayed, there a was a land slide on the main road that forced us to take longer routes to reach the town). If you are visiting with friends, this a good option.

"Great stay!"
07/09/15 Vanessa W Auburn, Washington
The rooms are pretty basic, but were clean, comfortable and perfect for a good nights sleep after exploring the area. I read reviews about how the rooms smelled, and they did not smell funny at all. The water is a little tricky, but you can get hot water. The people working at the hotel are wonderful! They speak very little English, which was frustrating for some other patrons we encountered but was fun for us to learn a little Spanish. The hotel is short taxi ride into town, which is pretty inexpensive. Overall I was very pleased. It was an inexpensive stay, and Mario helped us set up all our excursions; Costa Rica is AMAZING!! I would definitely recommend this hotel for the thrify traveler. If you are looking for something fancy then look for a spa. I was very pleased with my trip and stay here.

"Groupon deal"
07/02/15 lilolme00 California
We bought the groupon for 7 day package. The hotel itself is lacking but not sure how it compares to other hotels in the area. The room is very basic. Only has soap and body wash. Bring the rest of your toiletries like shampoo, lotion, toothpaste. There is no iron in the rooms or anywhere in the hotel. And no blow dryer! The bathroom is very basic. Bring some flip flops to wear while standing in the shower as the water stands and it isn't the cleanest hotel but it's not moldy/dirty either. It's probably 2.5/3star hotel by American standards. Electricity was out the first day and the 2nd night. The rooms get hot. So I'd recommend leaving the AC running so if electricity does shut off, ur room is somewhat decent. The food (breakfast and lunch) that are included in the groupon package are good. I enjoy it so far. As for the package, we got picked up by a local guy from San Jose who brought us to the hotel. I don't recommend coming in late night. We came in around 1am and it was a very scary drive. Lots of fog and sharp turns in the hills! I wish someone told us this. The groupon package is convenient. You don't have to plan everything - it's taken care of. La fortuna is $20 taxi ride from the hotel. There is a mudslide in the area so it's becoming a longer ride than in the past. Hence, double the original fare. We have not met Mario yet.

"Affordable, inclusive and very accommodating"
06/22/15 Nataliya L
My fiancee and I purchased a Group On for a 5-day stay in the hotel, which also included 3 days worth of activities. The deal was very well priced for everything it included. The hotel is located about 10 minutes away from La Fortuna, which is a bigger tourist city. It IS a smaller hotel and the rooms are good for sleep and storage, for a traveler who cares more about the activities than a luxurious resort to sit in all day. The people that work there are very helpful with calling you a taxi or shuttle for the activities, and breakfast was delicious! It is located less than 10 minutes from all of the activities, which with the Group On included hiking the Arenal Volcano, Ziplining, and Wildlife Tour. If you needed anything else, they were happy to book it for you. One thing you do need is at least the basics of Spanish language, or a Translation App because they did not speak English.

"Hotel Lavas del arenal"
06/12/15 Nicole K
Mario and his staff at hotel lavas del arenal were excellent. They were friendly and accommodating and put a lot of care into everything. The cost of hotel was very reasonable and included a scrumptious breakfast every morning. This is a locals kind of place out of easy walking distance of La Fortuna, there is a bus that you can catch but it only comes by about 6 times a day and of course there are always taxis available to you. Make sure to brush up on your Spanish as no one there speaks English. Then sit back and enjoy the peace and quite and easy pace in this beautiful setting.

"Good hotel, clean, friendly employees, good food"
06/10/15 Derek L
My wife and I stayed at Hotel Lavas del Arenal from May 18-21 on our honeymoon. Our room was clean, and had air conditioning and had a cute towel arrangement on our bed every morning. Our stay included breakfast every morning which included fresh fruit, coffee, fresh juice and a freshly cooked meal, we really enjoyed it! There isn't much to do close by the hotel, but the town is a few minutes away, and the staff will assist in arranging a pick up from the hotel if you want to do any tours and don't have a vehicle. There is also a bus stop at the corner you can take into town. It is not a resort by any means, but it is a perfect, clean, affordable, friendly home base for exploring the area and doing activities. We would definitely recommend it to others!
