The smell in the hotel room was awful. I think it smelled like mold. There were ants in the room too. Beds were good as well as breakfast.

Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is a bit far away from Fortuna and the activities. We did not have a car so that was a bit of a problem although you could always use a taxi. In fact, it might anyway be best to rent a car anyway when you are in Arenal because the activities may be quite a distance away from each other. The room was fairly basic although we had a superior […] room. The superior here means that you have an extra bed for a third person. The room did not feel good for us. It was a bit run-down, smelled of cleaning liquids (which is good I suppose) and the shower was a bit dodgy (water+electrical wiring gives me creeps). However, the host took extra efforts to please the guests and make them feel welcome. Whatever you needed, he tried to provide it. He was always available. So, a bit mixed feelings: at best an average hotel but the host provided an exceptional service. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Feine Gastgeber, Romantik statt Rummel"
"the best service with beautiful surroundings."
If you have a car, this is the place to stay. We did not and still stayed for four days, booking one day at a time. The hotel is about 6-8 kilometers outside of la fortuna. It has a nice pool, beautiful nature, all kinds of fruit trees in the garden, birds of all kinds just next to where you have breakfast, wifi all around the property and nice clean […] rooms with bathroom and shower. A brekfast is included that is good and sufficient for the average guest. A good typical costa rican dinner is prepared if you ask for it, but there is no menu. Mario and Ever, the main guys working here, were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They helped us mostly with all kinds of information, and of course tourbooking etc. But other than that we had conversations about anything and we really felt at home when we came back from our tours. And one of the best parts was the nature experience, I think we saw as much smaller wildlife in the picturesque hotel garden as we did on any tour we were on around arenal. And almost no traffic on the tiny road outside the hotel, witch means no noise except from the birds. ONE DOWNSIDE: The distance from la Fortuna makes restaurant visits a bit tricky. With a car there is no problem, but otherwise a taxi is needed wich is pretty expensive, around 10 dollars in each direction when we write this. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"SUPER friendly and accommodating!"

Hotel Lavas is a great place to go if you are looking for a friendly place to stay! Mario was EXTREMELY helpful, friendly and accommodating. So was Carlos (our driver, who made it an educational drive from the airport to the hotel :D)! The hotel serves your typical Costa Rican breakfast (rice, beans, fruit)! Super fresh and delicious. Mario was willing to help my brother and I book our expeditions and check up on us to make sure we were safe, having fun, and excited for our next trip out into La Fortuna. The rooms are clean, and included a mini fridge which was perfect for us! The rooms also included a small microwave. I hope one day to return to Lavas and enjoy the other great expeditions Mario told us about! :) The area itself is super safe, and everyone is friendly! I felt like I knew the people they were so helpful, sweet and accommodating!

I booked this hotel through a Groupon, as I think most people did, and let me tell you when they set put to help you, they help you!! We spent 5 days in fortuna, breakfast was awesome and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Thumbs up to natural fresh juice and fruits every morning!! Yummm Everything we needed they helped us with. Transportation to the town was always provided for us. And no the town is not walking distance but the place is super safe. We were out and about till 10pm although you'll probably be too tired after all the actives to be out that late. Carlos was awesome! Mario and Carlos helped us out tremendously always keeping in touch. Last 2 days in Costa Rica was spent in Jaco beach and Carlos drove us there. We had a problem with our hotel location but they helped us out big time. Seriously going the extra mile Miss it too much now =(
"What an amazing place!..."

We were treated exceptionally well at this hotel. Mario (Owner) made certain all the details from airport pick up, tours, meals, any needs were met. He even set up a beautiful birthday dinner with a cake and wine for my husband! He did that without me asking and really provided such an amazing experience. The hotel is beautiful, clean, peaceful and the sounds of nature and the surrounding gardens were so relaxing. Our room was clean and bed very comfortable, the tv was a flat screen with Spanish and a few English stations which we hardly watched since we were so busy on our tours or enjoying the pools/grounds. The meals were delicious especially the dinners...well worth eating there just about every night. The tours...just when you think you had such an amazing time and the tour is ending, you are presented with more! You get way more than expected! Again, Mario, set them up with the various tour companies. The ziplining, rappeling is out of this world-Marco and I think ? Meera were so great (blonde-haired, blue-eyed-sorry for forgetting her name because she was phenomenal); whitewater rafting with Alberto was phenomenal; Eric and Oscar from Red Lava took us on the Cerro Chato hike (extreme but well worth every minute. Mario and staff (Carlos, Kathia, the other girls) were so attentive and treated us like Family. You will do well staying here. We did not get a rental due to having the tours which provide pick ups and drop offs, store was about 5minute walk down the road and since we were there to relax, we didn't feel the need for a rental. We did grab a taxi to town one day and considering the distance and hills was worth the money. IF you are looking to enjoy the feel of Costa Rica and relax, this is the place for you. We will be back with our kids for sure! Pura Vida!
"Okay for a bed-would not stay again"

The hotel has potential. I you're looking for American standards this is not your place. But if you need a bed it's okay. Location: not great you're a $10 taxi ride there and a $10 taxi ride back from downtown. If you have a rental car you're fine. Staff: their current staff is really good, but they seem to be short staffed. We had to continually hunt down people for assistance. Also they had no staff members on site that spoke English which made it hard to communicate especially when it came for paying for things. Rooms: come with a mini fridge and microwave, rooms were clean and the cleaning service even made animals and such with the towels. However, we did hear rats in the wall and it even made an appearance in our room the last night. We were frustrated and received no compensation from the hotel. The owner remarked "oh that's bad." We went because of a groupon that included adventure tours. That made the trip. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Our room was very clean and well kept, and the hosts (Kathy, Carlos and all others) were extremely helpful and very nice. I would really recommend this to anyone traveling to La Fortuna especially in the forests !!!
"Very Helpful Service and Great Activities"
03/24/15 Sarahbul New York City, New York
We stayed at Hotel Lavas del Arenal through the Adrenaline Groupon as well. Overall we had an excellent trip and this hotel was great. It's a little far from La Fortuna, but we were able to make it work without a rental car by planning out our days in advance. As others have mentioned, Mario is great and very accommodating - he is always available by phone or email if you have any questions or need help setting up activities. It was a little difficult at first with the staff due to our limited Spanish skills, but the everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. We ate breakfast there everyday, which was great. We never ate dinner at the hotel so I can't speak to that, but I'm sure it would have been yummy as well. I would recommend staying at this hotel if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place outside of the hustle and bustle. Overall it was clean and accommodating!
"Clean but over priced and maintenance safety needs help"
03/17/15 Arbonnelady Fort Smith
Our room was clean and dinner after arriving the first night was delicious..... Breakfast was also very good especially the fresh juice. There was no real milk or cream for coffee. We were however thankful to find the little store down the street so we could buy some affordable snacks and juice..... Katia was always helpful and we managed even though we did not speak much Spanish. We were on the Adrenaline Groupon and Mario went above and beyond to help us change schedules etc. The second night I took a shower and as the night before we had only luke warm water.... Suddenly sparks started shooting out and the shower was smoking! Terrifying experience! There is no one there at night so we told Katia about the shower the next day. It was fixed with duck tape. There was also the smell of sewer gases the first day. My husband told me to put a wash cloth over the drain in the shower and that solved it. The fridge, air con and microwave were all plugged into a power strip....I'm sure this was not safe. The website states the hotel is a few minutes from La Fortuna....... It was about a 13 minute drive on a narrow road. It would certainly not be at all safe to walk that road. My friend and I could have put up with all of this with out any complaints until we received the bill for our 3 night's stay.... Our dinner was $20 for two which was fine. Our 2 bottles water were $12 which was ridiculous. Then the suppossed taxes for our room was $143 for 3 NIGHTS! What? Those rooms were not worth more than $60 a night at best that were included in the price of the groupon. So we checked out feeling burned! Adrenaline tour company/Mario needs to find a different hotel to partner with.
"I wouldn't chosen a better place with a wonderful and helpful team. Felt like part of the family!"
Having a customer service back ground is sometimes a blessing and a curse. Chosing this hotel was a blessing in this case! The team went above and beyond to make sure all my needs were met even with the language barrier. Make sure you book activities with Adrenaline for their combo package. Great guides and very knowledgeable! Pura Vida!
"Mario was just amazing!"

We used an all inclusive groupon for the Hotel Lavas Del Arenal, before our trip we were emailing back and forth with the owner Mario who is simply awesome. He was very attentive to our needs and responsive to all our questions. He took very good care of us from before our trip until we actually got back home. About the hotel itself : Room: It's pretty spacious, very clean, bed was comfortable, bed sheet were clean, very white, and good quality, there's 2 English channels on the TV, there's space to hang and put your stuff with a good amount of hangers. Bathroom: Very clean, hot water, the only thing we were missing is hooks or hangers for your clothes inside. AC : it was working perfectly, Fridge: we put some sodas inside the first day, I realized the next day that it was a freezer because the cans broke inside (or maybe the temperature was just set really low) - it was not a big deal at all. Towels : What I loved everyday, was coming back to those towels origamis style folded with fresh flowers petals on them to decorate, everyday it was something different (rose, heart, swan, turtle, ...) Food: For me it was the best part, we had told Mario before coming what we don't eat or really don't like, every morning we had a fresh Costa Rican breakfast, usually fresh fruits, then the meal with fresh juice, every day what we are going to eat would be a surprise and we would always love it. The restaurant is very small with a home type open kitchen, the cook would start getting ready our plates when we would come and sit, everyday and every meal she would take time to decorate them restaurant style. Every day we would have a different fresh juice, the food itself is most of the time rice a beans but in every different way possible with different meat and vegetables, we actually had pastas too. Overall I had made a list of restaurant we would go to in La Fortuna but the food was so authentic and good at the hotel that we ended up just eating there. The staff : They were all adorable and very helpful to us, only thing is they are only Spanish speaking so make sure you have your google translate app ready, for us it worked out great, and for any bigger request or complicated to translate we would just text or email Mario (we never got a chance to meet him because he was out of town) All the rides we had booked through Mario were always already there waiting for us 5 minutes before the time said. The activities : Groupon was the Robuste Adrenaline Package: we were looking for intense adventurous activities and we exactly got what we were looking for, the first day was zip lining and rappelling, our ride picked us up from the hotel very pontual - we had an amazing day rappelling was crazy! in the afternoon that day we decided to go visit La Fortuna - Katia found us a nice reliable taxi guy and negotiated the price for us! The next day we went to Venado Caves they give you boots and helmet and adapt the tour to how far you want to go which was pretty amazing - In the afternoon we decided to add Baldi hot Springs to our package wich Mario helped us doing by getting us a discounted price for the entry + dinner there. Baldi is amazing at night but dinner there is a complete rip off worst than cafeteria food, we regreted hotel food which was way way better. The third day we were scheduled to go to Rio Celeste but weather was bad, Mario called us in the morning explained us the situation and managed to schedule our Cero Chatto hike that day (which was originally planned the next day). We felt really lucky to have him, any regular travel agent would have washed his hands from the situation and he could have just sent us regardless. But he called us and explained us how it wouldn't be enjoyable and how we wouldn't be able to see the blue famous Color of the rio Celeste if it rains. We did Cero Chatto that day which is an amazing memory, it's pretty intense though I feel like we weren't aware of how intense it would be, it was hard and tiring and muddy, def not for people in not good physical shape, we are a mid 20s couple we are not athlete but we are def pretty sporty and that was HARD! Once you're done you feel so proud about yourself though and it makes if an amazing memory! After that you see the waterfall and they take you to a natural HotSprings place - memorable experience. The next day weather at the Rio Celeste Park got worst so again Mario called us in the morning and emailed us all the other activities he could book for us instead of that one, we picked a chocolate tour in the morning and the hanging bridges little hike in the afternoon, I'm still a bit sad about rio Celeste but those activities were still really nice specially the chocolate tour, what I'm really happy about is that Mario rescheduled everything at no extra fee and really took care of us even though he wasn't in town. The package was 5 days and we decided to spend 2 days at the beach by ourselves (not groupon included) - groupon included airport - hotel - airport transfers, again Mario was awesome because he helped us scheduling a ride to go to the Jaco playa at a reasonable price and then scheduled us for free the ride Jaco playa to Airport as included in the groupon which we really appreciated! Overall we came back to US with amazing memories and love for Costa Rica and Costa Ricans, Mario was the best travel agent we could have wished for. We are very grateful to him. He even emailed us after we got back to US to make sure our return trip went well!
"Escape the crowds of the town and enjoy the culture and nature that surrounds!"

My husband and I bought the package through Adrenaline In Costa Rica. it came with this beautiful hotel and three included tours! We loved our experience! Although the hotel was a little out of town it was still easy to get around with the bus and taxis. And it allowed you to really see some of the beauty of the rain forest without all the hustle and bustle of la fortuna. Our tours were great and we bought a couple of other tours while we were there. If you go through the hotel they can give you better deals on the excursions. However, make sure to talk to them in advance. We got one excursion through the hotel and it was discounted just like they said they would. Then we got another one, but it was really last minute and we got no discount. So just make sure you have a little more time to talk with the hotel owner about other excursions available. He is such a great man and really wants his customers to have the best time! Which we did! He was very helpful and gave lots of great tips while we were there. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and even to a family! it was so fantastic!
