"Three days at Lavas del Arenal, pros & cons."
Location is unfortunate, price is good though. Lighting is terrible. There is no place to sit or read or place anything in the room. Table and two seats outside though. Pool is nice, chaise lounges are nice. Nice creek. Good view of La Arenal from the back yard. Was sort of difficult without a car but we enjoyed the silence and the natural surrounding; […] preferred it to the town, and we had some nice times in town just sitting at a cafe. Convenient enough to everything. Mario fixed us up with a cable day but it was an hour out of town, so we cancelled it and found a perfectly good one right on the road to town, over the Cataractas, the big falls. "The Real Costa Rica Adventure"
If you are coming to Costa Rica to enjoy a real adventure this is the place for sure. Next to a reserve you will have the opportunity to observe all kind of beautiful birds, including toucans which come to the hotel trees to eat as they are attracted by all of the different trees and beautiful gardens the owners maintain every day. The swimming pool […] is located next to trees and makes it the perfect place to relax. There is a small stream where you can swim. The breakfast is great, rice and beans, eggs, toasts, coffee, orange juice, fruits. This is a great value for the price and the best it is quit. The owner speak little English but they have Gabriela and Mario over the phone at any time who speak English and help with tours or anything else related to the hotel. The rooms are of a good size. About the hot water, you just need to learn how it works. The less pressure the hotter the water will come, but they do have hot water. According to Gabriel they are in the process of replacing their hot water system into a Solar Water Heater which will be a lot better. They offer free wireless internet. You have good space for parking also and it is free compared to some hotels in La Fortuna which will charge you to park in their property. Ligia and Gabriel will go the extra mile to make sure you feel home and I really appreciate the extra help and the great treatment I received from them. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Lavas Arenal: Comfortable"
Located a few kilometers outside La Fortuna; a short drive and not inconvenient. Lovely setting, comfortable, clean, decently sized rooms. Nice pool with babbling brook. Friendly host, Lijia, who also serves as breakfast cook. Included breakfast is basic and fine. We are North Americans and prefer a shower with hot water and water pressure, otherwise […] we recommend this as a good, affordable, basic place to stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Throughout Costa Rica the accommodation that you find will be far from the Ritz, but this place was lovely. The room was clean, had AC, and the woman that was running it was very helpful. She didn't speak much English but it wasn't too much of an issue. Breakfast is included and it's very tasty. For us it was cooked to order with the choice of eggs […] or an omelete. Very nice owner who is willing to go above and beyond to help us with our stay. There's a little stream running from the backyard of the area which is very pleasant. The location is a little bit far out from the town center, but close to all the water activities.Genuine Expedia guest review
"good value for the money"
clean and adequate. Friendly staff, but communication is difficult if you don't speak Spanish. Somewhat out of the way and can be hard to find initially, especially if you arrive after dark. Generally, a good value for the price.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced and over-rated"
Our "deluxe" room had no chairs, coat hangers, or bathroom counter. I had to climb up on a table to turn on the AC. The hotel is listed on-line as being in Fortuna, but is is 6 km out of town. There was no milk for coffee, just a chemical powder additive. The list price of the room was twice what much superior rooms were asking in town.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Once again I'm finding that it's the people that make your time somewhere enjoyable. So that's why I'm recommending the Hotel Lavas. Maurio will do his utmost to make your stay very nice. One of the hardest working guys I have seen, and very friendly and hospitable. Keep up the good work, and all the best with the expansion.Genuine Expedia guest review
Pro ' Staff was friendly and helpful. Great view of Arenal Volcano Con ' We chose this hotel based on previous favorable reviews and it was more of a ¨cabina¨. The rooms are mini cottages, cabins that were musky and damp. The toilet took a long time to flush and the fridge did not work. We are a family of 5 and my kids refused to take a shower because […] the fixtures were old and rusty.. The breakfast was the same every morning which consisted of fruits, coffee, fresh juice, scambled eggs and ham, plus french baget. It was good, but we got tired of the same thing after 3 days. "Lavas Del Arenal, La Fortuna"
We arrived to find the room neat and tidy with the towels made into a heart shape adorned by a flower. The room was well equiped with a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. The rooms are in a lovely garden that are frequented by lots of birds and butterflies. The breakfasts are great and if you just sit outside you can see lots of wildlife (keel billed […] toucan and chestnut mandibled toucan amongst others). We took a stroll up the road in the morning and saw lots of wildlife. There is a small shop a short distance away. If I have one comment it would be that it is a little awkward if you don't have a car we paid about 4,000 Colon ($8 approx) for a taxi from town, however in our case that slight inconvenience was outweighed by the owners helpfulness and it's lovely position. "Lavas Del Arenal - nature at your doorstep!!"
My husband, adult daughter and I stayed here together. We absolutely loved everything, especially the beautiful yard and wildlife that showed up there. Lots and lots of toucans, unusual frogs and many other beautiful birds and butterflies. A gardeners paradise, thats for sure. The owners were helpful in organizing tours and the breakfast they provided […] was not only delicious, but had a personal touch too. We would go back in a heartbeat. The Lavas Del Arenal, is a quiet country side Motel, just outside of Fortuna, that offers a very personal, friendly experience. Great for families traveling with children and/or on a buget. The hotel is a bit far away from Fortuna and the activities. We did not have a car so that was a bit of a problem although you could always use a taxi. In fact, it might anyway be best to rent a car anyway when you are in Arenal because the activities may be quite a distance away from each other. The room was fairly basic although we had a superior […] room. The superior here means that you have an extra bed for a third person. The room did not feel good for us. It was a bit run-down, smelled of cleaning liquids (which is good I suppose) and the shower was a bit dodgy (water+electrical wiring gives me creeps). However, the host took extra efforts to please the guests and make them feel welcome. Whatever you needed, he tried to provide it. He was always available. So, a bit mixed feelings: at best an average hotel but the host provided an exceptional service. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Feine Gastgeber, Romantik statt Rummel"
"the best service with beautiful surroundings."
If you have a car, this is the place to stay. We did not and still stayed for four days, booking one day at a time. The hotel is about 6-8 kilometers outside of la fortuna. It has a nice pool, beautiful nature, all kinds of fruit trees in the garden, birds of all kinds just next to where you have breakfast, wifi all around the property and nice clean […] rooms with bathroom and shower. A brekfast is included that is good and sufficient for the average guest. A good typical costa rican dinner is prepared if you ask for it, but there is no menu. Mario and Ever, the main guys working here, were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They helped us mostly with all kinds of information, and of course tourbooking etc. But other than that we had conversations about anything and we really felt at home when we came back from our tours. And one of the best parts was the nature experience, I think we saw as much smaller wildlife in the picturesque hotel garden as we did on any tour we were on around arenal. And almost no traffic on the tiny road outside the hotel, witch means no noise except from the birds. ONE DOWNSIDE: The distance from la Fortuna makes restaurant visits a bit tricky. With a car there is no problem, but otherwise a taxi is needed wich is pretty expensive, around 10 dollars in each direction when we write this.

"I would stay here again without question!"
08/15/14 Holly H San Jose, Costa Rica
Lavas del Arenal is a fantastic little hotel just before the town of La Fortuna. There is a river on the property as well as a swimming pool and beautiful Costa Rican landscaping with heliciconias and palms. From the road you can see Volcan Arenal, and in a 5 minute drive you can access La Fortuna city center. The hotel offers many great connections to tours, and at fantastic prices. You don't need a car- most of the tours will pick you up. We did ziplining and it was incredible!! We passed over La Fortuna waterfall as well as White Pine waterfall. The hotel also includes a typical breakfast and it was the perfect way to start the day. The staff was friendly and the owner was very helpful as well. If I were to come back to Arenal I would definitely stay here again.
This is a quaint little hotel that is 10 min outside La Fortuna. Our stay was tranquil and relaxed, as the owner and manager of the hotel greeted and treated us fantastically. The river running through the property is a pleasant way to fall asleep. He was very informative and attentive to our needs. He also gives the best way to experience Arenal cheaply while seeing all it has to offer.

This resort is privately owned by a local named Mario. He is an amazing host who will do almost anything to accommodate you as he did for us. It's not a 5 star hotel, but you're not paying for one. We got way beyond our money's worth. The location is good: Just minutes from town but tucked away far enough that its safe and quiet. I stayed there with my wife, but you can bring kids too. And the scenery is beautiful. the garden, the restaurant (free breakfast), the view of the volcano, etc. I would definitely go there again.

I have stayed at Lavas 5 or 6 times and have always enjoyed my stay. Nice clean rooms, good food, and good service. Wi Fi everywhere on the property. Cable TV is very good too. I like the fact that the hotel is not downtown but rather remote, quiet and peaceful. The babbling brook at the back of the property, with a bottle of wine and a good company make for outstanding evenings. I'll be back.

The worse part: we had a tour included in our reservation (already paid) and we presumed somebody would pick us up at the hostel, as usual, but no. We were suposed to go by ourselves to the place and nobody told us about it, so we missed the tour! And friendly he gave us the option of going walking (15km). The hotel was far way from La Fortuna town, we spent about 10 dollars (one way) in taxi (you have great and cheap options in town). The room was small but good enough, there were a microwave and a small frigde and a cable tv. But the microwave didin't work properly and the shower was very bad, it turned itself off and got cold. The swimingpool was SO DURTY. The only good think was the meals, we had lunch and breakfast included and I was very tasty.

I recently visited Costa Rica and stayed at your hotel (May 16-18). The purpose of my message is to commend you for the staff at the hotel. First of all, the place is so cute, comfortable and attractive, and it's in a good location. The rooms are clean and provide basic comforts. It was helpful to rent a car so we could drive to La Fortuna in order to eat and shop. I was glad I didn't stay in a hotel in town. The hotel offered a visit to the nearby waterfalls which is a breathtaking site you don't want to miss. I would like to thank the staff: Bernie, Monica, Yerlie, and Virgilio for being so nice and making us feel so welcome. I told Yerlie I wish I could take her home with me! Fort Worth, TX

Mario, the owner was extremely helpful in setting up our itinerary.I went on line first and picked out what I wanted to do and he scheduled it with discounts. We did rent a car, which I highly recommend, since you are somewhat remote at this hotel. Everything was clean and simple. Pool was cute. At night, you share the pool with the local frogs. We stayed 6 nights and breakfast was the same every morning. The only unfortunate thing was that the owner, Mario, was in the States at the time of our stay and Monica and Benny were running the show. They speak little English so bring your Smartphone translator. THis is definitely not a resort but the Groupon price was right.
"Are you kidding me?!"
04/09/14 SnowySanDiego San Diego
Upon arrival there was no one at reception. The office was dark and locked. We had to search for someone and a found a very young gal who's English was extremely limited. Thank God for google translate. The owner, Mario, was living it up in Florida riding on the wind of a Trip Advisor Award and naive travelers who bought a Groupon. We did speak to him by phone. The room reeked of mold. I tried to make the best of it by spraying Fabreeze all over the place, but it could not compete with that and the smell of sewage. The window in the bathroom was left open so we got several interesting species of insects covering the walls and floors. Mario must have been in a hurry to leave because he didn't attach the sink to the wall. He's probably awaiting the sink counter, which was substituted with a painted piece of plywood. The counter is probably coming with a proper size front door and maybe a hanger or two. Woke up with a tremendous headache and nausea due to the smell of mold. That was probably a good thing because the breakfast consisted of stale bread, some sort of salad dressing and eggs. Mario told us to be at reception at 8am for a rafting tour. 45min later we were still waiting. He never booked the tour! Luckily the tour company still had availability and rushed over to come get us and the day was saved. There are so many lovely resorts in La Fortuna pay the $15 more and go there.
"No service, out of the way"
03/31/14 Liz B Los Angeles, California
We stayed here with a Groupon, so we were stuck for three days. The upside is that the garden is very pretty, and it was amusing to see the toads and frogs enjoying the pool at night. The downsize - you are really isolated and there is no one there who can help you. We originally were not renting a car, but after the first night, we went into Fortuna and did and things got better from there. You absolutely need a car at this place. The rooms were very basic, without some of the simple things you might expect like drinking glasses, a TV remote control and pillows on all the beds. Bare light bulbs, no bedside table. They have no right to call this a resort. The person with whom we had emailed never showed up in person despite promising to be there and help us organize some sightseeing. The "waterfall tour" that was part of the package was never offered. I brought it up and again got no details or assistance so we just dropped it. Breakfast was good on one day when an older woman who knew what she was doing showed up. Otherwise, it was like the kids are in charge, and they don't speak English or know how to run a "resort." I realize that Spanish is the language here, but if you are focusing on an American audience, someone should be present at the place who can actually help you out in at least basic English, as has been the case everywhere else we have been in Costa Rica. If you have a Groupon, consider using their cancellation policy and take the credit toward something else.
"Great place! Would do it again!"

We read the reviews on tripadvisor before we came here, so we had mixed feelings when arriving. We stayed here 3 days, visiting from Florida. It's off the main road and you have to take an unpaved road, easy to miss if you don't have a gps. I highly recommend you have your own rental car, preferably a SUV. It's about a 10 minute drive from town center. We stayed in room 5 which is a family room (there was only 2 of us and 4 beds). Check in was very easy, Benny is a young man, spoke little English but he knew exactly who we were, big smile, very courteous. I showed my passport, he gave me a room key, didn't need my credit card or any security deposit and I didn't have to sign for anything. The room is clean, seems to have been remodeled recently including the bathrooms, no bugs (woohoo, I read about cockroaches in the previous posts & almost canceled my reservation) a microwave, cable flat screen tv, mini fridge, wifi, and a/c. The grounds are pristine, very beautiful, kept super neat, next to a running river behind the pool. The pool is small, not very deep, but kept clean for visitors. Just use the pool before night or else the local frogs will come claim is as their own. La Fortuna waterfall is close by and you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't go there while staying here. Breakfast was good. We started with watermelon juice with fruit (watermelon, banana, pineapple). It was a bit chaotic since it was just Benny & another young lady running the whole show. There were other guests who were picky eaters & making it difficult. This isn't the Hilton or Sheraton, it's a budget motel/hotel that is well worth the price, I booked through Expedia and paid about $60 per night. The hot meal includes a piece of toast, egg omelet with cheese & ham, unlimited coffee, and assorted cookies. If I had to say anything negative: only 2 towels, only 2 pillows, no daily housekeeping, no dinner service, I didn't see the BBQ grill I thought we read about online, no trash can near the pool area, no one to assist with tour bookings (can easily be done all over town center), and the dirt road to get to the hotel. Overall, amazing place, would definitely stay again and recommend to others!
